Jack Ripcord is a traditional pulp fiction hero. He is a private investigator who gets called in on weird cases the government needs help with. Although this is the first Jack Ripcord book, he and his partners remember at certain times past adventures where they worked together to save the world. But will they be able to accomplish that task this time?

It is 1939, the Nazis are in control of Germany and are about to invade Poland. So what are they doing in Chicago and why do they need lots and lots of gold? Where did The Dragon (the boss bad guy) get that wonderful toy? (Okay, it is not a toy, it is a rifle that shoots some sort of electric charge, but somehow just now I flashed on Jack Nicholson as The Joker in the first Batman movie. Sorry.)

Jack Ripcord has a wonderful toy of his own, by the way: a knife known as the Stonehenge Blade, with powers that Jack seems not to really know about, other than it glows and gets hot when he uses it. There is a story behind this knife and how Ripcord became its owner, but Jack didn't have a chance to share it in these pages. Someday, I hope?!

Our hero has two friends who help him on every case. There is Trinity St. John the sexy beautiful witch. Good witch! Her magic powers scare Jack more than a little bit but I think he is more than a little bit in love with her too. Then there is my personal favorite of the three, Walter Kozak. He is a mechanic with a talent for boxing (Jack is one of the few who knows that Walter has given private training sessions to some of the biggest names in the ring) and what else....oh, yeah. He is a werewolf who can change form whenever he wants or needs to, not just at night like your standard werewolf.

So The Dragon is on a mission for Hitler, and Jack and his friends need to stop him. They start this adventure in Chicago but then follow The Dragon to Peru and his secret bunkers in the jungle. There is evil magic floating around; not to mention zombies and beast-men and giant spiders to fight. Will any of our team see Chicago again?!

This book is fast-paced, exciting, and not too terribly gruesome, although there are naturally some bloody scenes. (That tends to happen with black magic, insane Nazis, zombies and giant spiders, you know.)

I would certainly agree with the front cover of my print edition, which calls this book "Thrilling Pulp Fiction"! I hope there are more titles someday featuring this trio, I would be first in line to add them to my bookcase!

Note: Thomas McNulty is a GR friend of mine, but I paid full price for my copy of Jack Ripcord, and the opinions in this review are entirely unsolicited and completely my own.
