A Kindred Christmas

Rate this book
After 35 years, Kim has reason to believe that her husband has been cheating on her. She decides she needs some time away so she can get through this devastating news. After being prompted by her friends, she agrees to go to a bed and breakfast quilting weekend, where she hopes she can get some perspective on her life and what is to become of her now. The Kindred Spirit Bed and Breakfast is a beautiful historic inn and the attentive hosts are just what Kim needs. While quilting with her friends, Beth and Andy, over hot chocolate and lots of laughs, her low spirits slowly begin to take a turn for the better. The inn seems to bring her some peace, and the slow pace allows her time to reflect on her marriage and family. As the heavy snow begins to fall, Kim's memories are turned toward the past -- days with her children and her loving husband. Can she learn to forgive? And does she want to? What does God expect of her? As she continues to pray for herself and her family, a Christmas miracle affects all who are present and brings Kim's dilemma into focus

About the author

Jane O'Brien

Jane O'Brien discovered her love of writing at the age of ten when she wrote her first ten-chapter book in pencil on notebook paper. She passed it around to all of her friends at school and told them she wanted to be an author. And that planted the seed.
O'Brien's career life has been varied. She was a piano teacher for over 50 years, a librarian, and a professional proofreader. She is also interested in genealogy, having worked on her own family tree, as well as her husband's, for over 40 years, which helps to color most of her novels.
Today, as a grandmother, Jane is finally fulfilling her lifelong dream, after successfully having her thirty-fifth book published, which includes two trilogies, one six-book series, three Christmas novellas, and two Amazon best-selling time slip series. She lives in West Michigan and writes romance with a little history, mystery, and family entanglements, all set in her part of the state.
The stories she weaves are about family and the intricate connections of relatives, past and present.

For many of us, Christmas is our favorite season and no matter what the calendar says, we are always delighted to have Christmas thoughts. Books and novellas that bring the Christmas spirit to life are my favorite reads. I am delighted to immerse myself in a world of evergreens, lights, pretty packages and tantalizing bakery aromas. Pair that with a variety of vibrant and well-developed characters, who may be facing a few challenges that only the hope and joy of Christmas can resolve, and you have…

A BRAND-NEW CHRISTMAS NOVELLA BY AUTHOR JANE O’BRIEN!

Kindred Christmas allows us to return to the charming and comforting Kindred Spirit Bed and Breakfast featured in an earlier book by the author. But before we get to the B&B, we must read Chapter One of this novella, a chapter that is what one of the most impactful first chapters I have ever read.

In Chapter One, we learn about Kim and Neil. They have been married for over 30 years and have a comfortable life and two grown sons. It’s almost Christmas when Neil jolt’s Kim’s world. “Kim had turned 53 but she didn’t think of herself as old. But apparently her husband thought she was.”

Is her marriage over? Kim is devastated and decides to leave her home and her husband and retreat to the Kindred Spirit Bed and Breakfast to join her friends. Beth and Andy (Andrea) stay at the Kindred B&B each year before Christmas to relax at the lovely place and also attend a quilting workshop. Can her friends, as well as the understanding proprietors, Nora and Chase help her through this terrible time, or will it take a Christmas miracle?

As her fans know, Author Jane O’Brien is a splendid storyteller, and with her simple but comfortable writing style she is able to transport us to the lovely Lake Michigan area. Ms. O’Brien gifts us with heart-warming descriptions of people, their feelings, thoughts and dreams. She gives us beautiful word pictures of the food, decorations, and activities. Add to all that a splash of humor and wit and you will feel like you are staying at the Kindred B & B with Kim and her friends- and I wish I could! And as usual, the cover of this book is enchanting!

“Kim had always had a strong sense of right and wrong, a moral compass for the family. But at times that also made her rigid and unforgiving.”

Near the end of the story we see that Kim is changing.

“Kim bowed her head in prayer and asked God, ‘Was it really the end? Is that what her Creator wanted?’”

And her husband was also bowing his head in prayer, asking God for forgiveness.

Does a happy ending await? You will be delighted, charmed and in awe of the Christmas Miracle that transforms the Kindred Spirit Bed and Breakfast. I highly recommend Jane O’Brien’s latest lovely book, and her second Christmas novella. No matter what day it is, it’s always Christmas in our hearts.

Many thanks to the author for a review copy. This is my honest review.
And if you haven’t read Jane O’Brien’s The Kindred Spirit Bed & Breakfast (White Pine Trilogy Book 3), please do! You do not need to have read it to enjoy the Christmas novella, but this is one of my favorites by Jane and I know you will enjoy it. Here is the blub.

“Nora is curious about the portraits of the original owners from the 1850s, which are hanging on the walls. The hair stands up on her arms whenever she passes one of them. Something is going on in this house, and Nora needs to find out what. She reaches out to a guest at the inn to help her discover the secrets of the past, which may resolve the problems of the present.”

magic of Christmas

Since I’m trying to go back and read all the past books of this author, I keep pleasantly being surprised how fantastic they all are . This story showed the magic that happens when soulmates go through troubling times and have faith that it will work out.

I have been given an Advanced Review Copy from the author and this is my honest review.
This novella is written for Christmas but Author O’Brien has written a piece with real meaning for any time of year. Created with real life issues, as a reader I found many bits of wisdom and benefit in The Kindred Christmas.
O’Brien takes the reader back to a prior setting in Taylor Ridge and a visit to her previous creation of the Kindred Spirit Bed and Breakfast. She enhances the previous characters and introduces new persons with real life issues and emotional struggles. Kim comes for a respite weekend with girlfriends to retreat from sorrow and lighten her Christmas spirits and is met with an experience more personally moving.
O’Brien skillfully weaves a storyline with natural twists but surprising turns to create a novella worth reading more than once. The characters are realistic and their circumstances engaging. The author again shares interesting facts in such an unobtrusive manner for those of us who grew up in Western Michigan.
I am impressed with how the author betters the development of story characters and improves her plots with each new book. This novella may be short but its effect is long lasting. Very well done for young adults to those of us who have lived long enough to relate.

Uplifting

A great story and a reminder that life does have ups and downs. With prayer and trust in God and an open heart things will work out. Very uplifting. Jane has a way of drawing you into the story and making you feel like the characters are real and they are your personal friends.

Loved this book. The way she tied in the characters of the white pine trilogies to this was incredible. Plus there could be more story lines that could be written.
