"It’s a powerful memoir of a mother’s undying love, faith, family, challenges, and the profound human spirit.” —Joan Marineau, Licensed Mental Health Counselor
One phone call shatters Marcie’s life—her son Hunter had suffered a psychotic episode that landed him in a mental hospital thousands of miles away. But even after he’s home and seemingly on the road to recovery, the voices in his head direct him to kill his parents and throw himself in front of a moving vehicle. It seems more than Marcie can bear, but by the grace of God, she and her family usher Hunter, and each other, through his psychotic breaks and the dire aftermath. But every day is a balancing act, one in which they never know which side they’ll land.
Written from her mother’s heart, Marcie doesn’t sugarcoat the effects of drug abuse and mental illness, tackling head on the shame and seclusion that accompanies the life-changing diagnoses. Infused with grace and mercy, Shattering offers hope to those who face challenges that seem insurmountable.
As a parent of a child who suffers with mental illness, it is a comfort to read others stories to know we are not alone. This is a foreign world to us and the more we can read and learn what can be done and how others have handled similar situations is helpful. Thank you for sharing your story Marcie, and may God continue to help Hunter and your family heal❤️
A Clear Glimpse into A Family's Journey Dealing with Mental Illness
A topic not often at the forefront of many peoples' minds and/or conversations, challenges in mental health can impact us all. When the ongoing real-life story is personal, like in the book "Shattering", and told from the first-person account of a loving, resilient mother, that journey is at our fingertips.
I am thankful to have had such a clear glimpse into what it means to live with the impact of severe mental illness. The day to day, the progress, the set-backs, the tough tough times and the victories reveal much. It's that "brass tack" sharing of one's experience that allows others to have a truer understanding of what mental illness encompasses. This has greatly influenced me personally, to grow and understand. That will, I am sure, influence my ability to communicate and respond.
Beautifully written, and compelling from start to finish, "Shattering" is a must read for all.
Though this book is a fast read, it's not an easy one. Marcie does an amazing job of painting the emotions and sometimes absurd thoughts that one goes through when dealing with mental illness in a loved one. (Beginning of chapter 5 being a perfect example!) Her words will resonate with those that have experienced traumatic situations, even if they differ from the ones she experienced. Her faith in God throughout offers a true testament to a close relationship with Christ. Though we often wish to be spared the hard things we go through, it's through those experiences we can comfort others that go through them, and Marcie has done that in this book and in multiple speaking engagements. There is hope when we struggle, and it's found in Christ. Marcie testifies to that.
Wonderful book! Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. This is an eye opening book as far as families that struggle with mental illness. Even though it was difficult to read about some of the hard things this family went through, I did find this book inspirational.
I understand the title of this book, as the reader feels the emotions of the author and members of her family acutely while reading. Hunter's story - his family's story - will resonate for a long time to come. I offer my highest recommendation of this book to anyone who loves someone living with mental illness. God's heart shines in Mrs. Jones' writing.
An incredible juxtaposition of heartbreak and beauty. Words fail to describe how impactful this memoir is. If you read one book in your life, let it be this one.
