A Forest in the Desert: The Life of Saint John the Short

Rate this book
“A Forest in the Desert” is a graphic novel that tells the story of John the Short, a humble disciple turned monastic father.Saint John the Short is a 4th century Christian who, inspired by the great desert fathers Macarius and Antony, travelled to the desert of Scetis to become a monk. When the harsh teacher Amoi accepted him as a disciple, John learned humility, faith and obedience and grew from an unwitting novice to the father of many monks and a great saint of his generation. “A Forest in the desert” brings the world of early Christian fathers to life in expressive pen and ink. The fluid lines read close to ancient icons with the familiarity of a graphic novel. Christians seeking truth in desert wisdom will find a virtuous example in the ever-relevant life of Saint John the short.Creative Orthodox is a Canadian Egyptian writer and illustrator. The style of writing and layout of this book reveals an extremely insightful author. He includes theological teachings and spiritual sayings of the fathers while also including corny jokes and lighthearted commentary :) so cute and moving at the same time

It's for all ages. It brought tears to my eyes as it portrays really well Saint John's love for God, humility, and simplicity, as well as kindness to all people, whether Christians or not. Loved it, such a beautiful read and amazing drawings.

Another book I probably wouldn’t have picked up on my own, but since I’m on the summer reading committee at school, I had to read it to see if it met the criteria for the students. The graphic novel seems very well researched and had some interesting stories in it. I’m just not sure that St. John the Short is my Saint. I was fine up until the part where he abandoned everyone to the barbarians so he wouldn’t be the cause for his murderer to have his soul be damned. He did a lot of good after that point, but I didn’t feel super inspired by him. Otherwise, I enjoyed the format and thought that definitely added to the story.

Wonderful to read the life of this amazing saint. And in an engaging, artistic and memorable presentation. Thoroughly and faithfully Orthodox. Well-researched with an artist’s eye to every detail. I hope many more books like this are forthcoming from this author-artist!
