Hunters are a special breed, dedicated to tracking down treasures, magical beasts, and even other men. But such pursuits require a license, and less than one in a hundred thousand can pass the grueling qualification exam. Those who do pass gain access to restricted areas, amazing stores of information, and the right to call themselves Hunters.
SEPTEMBER 4: PART 2 The Spiders unravel the clues that will bring them ever closer to Kurapika's identity. Meanwhile, Kurapika's desire for revenge is rekindled when he learns that the Spiders are still alive. And though the bounty on the Spiders has been withdrawn, Gon persuades Killua to help Kurapika awhile longer, if only to bring the cycle of killing to an end. Then, during a mad chase through the crowded streets of Yorknew, the Spiders capture Gon and Killua again! Will Kurapika and Leorio be able to set them free? And will Kurapika finally get his revenge?
Yoshihiro Togashi (冨樫義博) is a manga artist. Credited in Chinese translations as Fu Jian Yi Bo.
He began drawing manga at an early age; while he attended college, the publisher Shueisha recognized his talent. Togashi has authored numerous manga series in different genres during the past three decades. He is perhaps best known for writing and illustrating the YuYu Hakusho and Hunter × Hunter series, both of which have been published in the popular Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine. Togashi is married to Naoko Takeuchi, the author of Sailor Moon.
Hisoka is tenacious. That's definitely a very accurate description. Because Chrollo got a hold of Neon's prediction ability, they learned that almost half of the group would get killed by the Scarlet Eyes the following week and Chrollo decided to stay out of the enemy's way for awhile and go back to Meteor City to avoid that. And because Hisoka wanted to fight Chrollo so much, it would not be good for him. His reason of letting Kurapika knows that the corpses were fake and deceiving the Phantom Troupe with his slightly fake prediction result was entirely for his own benefit. By letting the Spiders know about the half truth of his own predicted fate, which was about having a communication with the chain user, it obviously put him in the spot. But Hisoka smoothly manipulated the situation. He let them think that the chain user used a law of sword against him, but the truth was the law of sword that was mentioned in the prediction was fabricated, along with the statement that if they would go back to their hometown, they would still lose half of the group. By telling Kurapika the truth that the Spiders were still alive, Hisoka knew that Kurapika would strike again. It was all Hisoka's plan to prevent the Spiders from leaving and for him to finally have a chance to fight the leader. And because the Spiders believed that they would still lose half of them either by staying or leaving, they decided to stay and continue tracking the chain user down. Smooth move from Hisoka, I may say.
This mission of both sides, fighting their way towards each other, was so unnerving. Our gang and the Spiders are now making they move. Reading this part was no different tham watching the anime. It was making me anxious the whole time. Killua and Gon let themselves get captured so that Kurapika can make his move, but because risking his friends' lives to take revenge wasn't what Kurapika wanted, it makes the whole situation more complicated. But not only for him but also for the Spiders. Both sides need to make a very difficult decisions.
This whole situation was very smart. Because their moves positioned themselves on the edge of the cliff, you can't possibly know what will happen next, who will fall or who will manage to stay on their feet. It was so unnerving!
Pakunoda's Nen ability of reading minds was also so interesting. That's why she was one of the most important member of the Phantom Troupe. The members with physical and combat ability were easy to replaced but not Pakunoda. You think it will be difficult to handle a mind reader like Paku, but our gang, especially Kurapika, was able used Paku's ability against her. It was already a long time ago that I realized how I loved the Phantom Troupe despite being so messed up because of how interestingly complicated they all are, but now I'm liking them more right now.
And the part where Hisoka called for a little help from a friend. We're going to get a glimpse of Illumi once more. His silhouette was enough to make me excited for the next volume.
PS: I am so in love with Kurapika disguised as a female! He was so pretty!!!
Major Dope Trope Alert (A recurring segment in my reviews where I highlight narrative tropes that should receive more attention)
Well Thought-Out Superpowers
I was watching CW's The Flash last week and a character with run-of-the-mill mind-reading powers showed up (a few episodes after yet another mind reader appeared). To the show's credit, they tackled this mind-reading power slightly differently, reacting to the vulnerability of having your thoughts exposed at all times and how it can abuse a relationship.
However, this is still a very basic trope for comic book story lines and a power that has very little innovation attached to it. From a show where every major villain thus far has super speed and little else, I wonder why I even bother.
This is why I always use Hunter x Hunter as a measuring stick for "super powers," though that stick is often too long.
Case in point: The Phantom Troupe features Pakunoda, a character with mind-reading Nen, but she has to come in contact with the person for it to work. On top of that, she creates memory bullets based off of what she read and can shoot them into others, sharing those memories. Alternately, she can shoot the memory back into the person from whom she read, erasing that memory.
When you're planning a precise kidnapping sequence, you can see how this could be a very problematic ability. The end of this volume and the beginning of the next is exactly how you handle a mind reader in a refreshing way.
And in the hierarchy of HxH Nen abilities, Pakunoda's ability may not crack the top 50, if that tells you the level of creativity that goes into these powers.
But to the issue at hand, this volume is prime HxH: Crafty counter tactics, high drama and an even better story revealed underneath. Nobody we've seen can stand up to the Spiders, so Kurapika, Gon, Killua, Leorio and Melody design a clever trap that soon goes off the rails. But alas! Fighting is not the only way to beat an opponent.
Bonus Dope Trope
Misinformation
Sidenote: I love when characters are misinformed, such as the Phantom Troupe has been for much of this arc, and take logical actions based on that misinformation. More writers need to embrace that tactic as it creates an organic uncertainty.
The bad guys don't have to be omnipotent to be scary and the heroes don't have to be one discovery away from success.
Closer to 4.5 stars. I felt certain parts were drawn out too much in this volume. Yet there is also some quick on-your-feet thinking that is so well played! Who would have thought that 1 tiny second would be so important! The fortunes given are interesting, but a bit confusing. This one really brings into play some of the other spiders and their personalities a bit more. Yet not enough to sate me! Kurapika is playing a dangerous game and I hope it works out!
This volume seems to be mostly build-up, towards another battle between Kurapika and a Spider (and there's also hints at potential Hisoka vs. Chrollo too). I really loved the plan that was enacted by Kurapika and co. in order to get to the Spiders, and they were pretty good at coming up with a new plan on the fly when the initial one didn't work out as planned.
I'm curious how this will continue in the next volume... will the Spiders be one down ? Or still just as strong?
ain't no arc like the phantom troupe arc because the phantom troupe arc is insane!!!!! this is why i became fully obsessed with this series, and it is so fun to revisit the complete madness that goes on here. the hotel lobby scene is so good, but improved in the anime only by the meta inclusion of the theme song (me vs. rewatching season three lmao)
unfortunately, i am once again at the mercy of my library's collection and am out of volumes to consume in one sitting. i will return for my chaos king chrollo eventually *salute*
also of note: the hxh character poll results on the last page have the top five as killua, kurapika, gon, chrollo, and hisoka. i would only edit to switch chrollo and kurapika, but otherwise solid lol

Kurapika had me almost crying in this one aaaaaah, also I just can't say it enough: I LOVE the gon killua kurapika leorio friendgroup, they're so wholesome:')
This has to be one of the best if not THE best volume yet. From start to finish, I was hooked in and it was quite a ride. Togashi-Sensei is so clever. The plans and plot twists are always amazing and I never know what to expect. I loveeeee anything with the Spiders...I love how they aren't just stock villains, they have background and heart...I love that they struggle with internal demons...I love Chrollo and his whole cool, calm demeanor...ugh...this run on sentence could keep going. This whole arc is gold. Kurapika is one of my least favorite characters, but somehow his backstory and reasoning pulls me in. Also we got a lot of Hisoka in this volume. He's just so suave and smart that it's hard not to love him and root for him. Texture Surprise fucking rules. And him showing up is always a huge plus...especially since he Schwing-ed (if you will) for Chrollo. You get yours Hisoka. As we come to the end, I am re-realizing why this arc was my favorite to begin with. The Chimera Ant Arc is perfection, but this arc has the Spiders.
P.S. Bonus points because Togashi-Sensei put a Naruto reference in this volume and I actually LOLed at work.
"It's not fair. The pressure of letting down a friend... is worse than risking my life."
The Yorkshin Arc is better now that a lot of the hullabaloo is out of the way, and the gang are reunited. By which I mean Kurapika, Gon, Killua, and Leorio. The "thriller" aspect is more complex, indicative of the route the manga will take in the Chairman Election and Succession War arcs, as well as kind of the Chimera Ants after a point. Basically, Uvo's dumb ass needed to die so the manga could evolve; get the r*tarded Enhancer out of the way so we can focus on things other than ungabunga fisticuffs. (I say this as someone who likes Dragon Ball more than this series...)
As I re-read this manga, I keep finding Phalcnothdk hotter, in spite of her nose. I mean, I probably still think Matiy and Chzzok are better-looking, but still...!
I love prophesies, predictions, and all those kind of things, so I certainly adore the predictions presented in this manga. The "Lovely Ghostwriter" ability is surely amazing, and its predictions are smooth and easy to understand, yet they still manage to maintain a sense of beauty. The translators did a good job with this. One of my favourite parts is when Hisoka changes his prediction, he is such a quick thinker to modify it in such a short amount of time to fit the criteria of a prediction. Here, we see a lot of the Phantom Troupe, and how much they truly care about each other. Another thing that I loved was Killua's evident concern for Gon, they are so loyal to each other.

And we're right back into another thrilling heist. The way each side schemes and adapts on the fly is a delight to witness. There's a cycle of building up tension until an explosive confrontation, only to start building to the next intense burst of action. And it's such an exciting roller coaster to be on. Especially since our heroes are incredibly underpowered and we're consistently reminded just how quick and brutal death can be in this world. This is bolstered by the fact that Togashi's art has hit a high point during the past couple of volumes.
Okay but was really slow and not as action packed as the other volumes before it was and it kind of makes you want to give up on it but at the end it leaves on a cliffhanger and means you need to read the next volume to get the cliffhanger to go somewhere o not to be left disappointed 😓😓😕😐🥱😴
Chapter 104. September 4th: Part 3 -- Chrollo, having stolen Neon's fortune telling ability, brings a real turn to this arc and I was quite hooked from the beginning to see if knowing certain things about possible future events would give our villainous Phantom Troupe any more of an edge.
At the end of this chapter, Hisoka texts Kurapika, bursting his poor happy bubble and revealing that the dead bodies were in fact fakes and the Troupe leader and other members aren't actually dead. So, this volume picks up at a high note.
Chapter 105. September 4th: Part 4 -- Kurapika and gang talk about Meteor City and the Phantom Troupe, plotting their next moves. Not very interesting. Hisoka's fortune, as told by Chrollo, leaving Pakunoda stunned? Very very interesting.
Chapter 106. September 4th: Part 5 -- Hisoka's deception of not really being loyal to Chrollo and the other spiders ALMOST came to be disclosed but not quite. That was disappointing. I wanted to see how Hisoka would fair against a group of such trained assassins. Oh well. It will happen someday. Patience.
Chapter 107. September 4th: Part 6 -- More planning and boring stuff with Kurapika and gang.
Chapter 108. September 4th: Part 7 -- We learn more about Kurapika's nen abilities and what makes him so strong. Slightly more interesting.
Chapter 109. September 4th: Part 8 -- Killua goes to stake out the Phantom Troupe's hideout and senses something is wrong. Of course, he does. Our boy, Killua, is sharp as an arrow. And so cute. The rest of the events in the chapter are only mildly interesting. Why is there so much build-up? AAGHHH
Chapter 110. September 4th: Part 9 -- Chrollo and the other Spiders are trailing the fake Scarlet eyes while Kurapika and gang trail them. More build up.
Chapter 111. September 4th: Part 10 -- Chrollo senses that they are being followed and Killua and Gon are forced to give themselves up to save Kurapika getting captured instead. Killua and Gon try to talk their way out of it but they are bad at acting. It was hilarious to see them try for a while there though.
Chapter 112. September 4th: Part 11 -- Poor Squala is captured with the fake Scarlet eyes. Pakunoda interrogates what he knows about the Chain User, threatening Squala's girlfriend Eliza's wellbeing if he doesn't answer honestly. This chapter was just sad but it drove home the ruthlessness of the Spiders which I had momentarily forgotten in all their plotting and talking.
Chapter 113. September 4th: Part 12 -- All the Phantom troupe members reunite in the hotel lobby and Nobunaga is so cute (even if he is a super villain spider) about running into Gon and Killua again. That man really wants to befriend our two little Hunters. Anyway. . . This chapter is finally when something substantial happens. Pakunoda uses her ability on the captives, Gon and Killua. But right when she finds out everything, Kurapika's plan to rescue Gon and Killua is put in action as well. Some impressive moves by everyone but Gon and Killua are unable to make a run for it. And yet, the plan is a success. How? When Kurapika couldn't get Killua and Gon out, he kidnapped Chrollo instead. Dun du dun dun.
Chapter 114. September 4th: Part 13 -- Pakunoda is told that if she tells anyone what she found out through Gon and Killua's memories, then Kurapika would kill Chrollo. This forces her hand and now the Troupe members have to negotiate to save their leader.
Chapter 115. September 4th: Part 14 -- Kurapika acts like a total boss during the hostage negotiations and his initial interactions with Phinks are so fun. There is some dispute and in-fighting in the Troupe members but eventually Pakunoda agrees to do everything Kurapika demanded. The closing of the volume shows a mysterious exchange between Hisoka and Illumi (Killua's jerk of an older brother), laying foundation to the upcoming volume's events.
Honestly, there were fun times with this but there was too much planning and little actual action and even though I call myself an intellectual, I still like some action in my mangas. The hilarity that came up every few chapters and my love for Killua kept me going though. Let's hope the next volume is better.

Gon/Killua - I had fun with their arc. It was nice to see them hanging out in Gon's home, starting the wheels turning on Greed Island, being able to explore Yorknew City, and the run-ins with the spiders demonstrating that yes, there is still a lot of distance for them to go.
Kurapika - While Kurapika's anger and emotional range is well-fleshed out in this arc (indicating the extent he's willing to go to avenge his people), I feel like there's only so much more distance his character could be pushed. In a JRPG I think right after this would be the tragic narration of the events of his village being destroyed or plundered, followed by the "Traumatized One"'s reintegration into regular character society. His master negotiation skills are neat but I'm not a fan of that sort of mystery/thriller kind of logic puzzle stuff that much.
Spiders - A deeply unsympathetic group that I think - slightly cheaply - attempts to be redeemed by depicting them as a ragtag group of orphan friends who grew up in a lawless city. This kind of "Orphan turned Murderer" trope in anime/manga to me... feels kind of tired? While the existence of orphans is an indication of societal failure, there's something about the trope that feels cheap to me - too easily sweeping away actions done as full-grown, thinking adults, simply from the 'cause' of having a rough childhood (where in reality that mapping isn't so 1-to-1 or straightforward). Why don't any of them quit being spiders and do something about Meteor City? Etc, etc.
