Valentines From Bath: A Bluestocking Belles collection

Rate this book
In five original stories, Jessica Cale, Sherry Ewing, Jude Knight, Amy Quinton, and Caroline Warfield bring you Valentines From Bath

The Master of Ceremonies announces a great ball to be held on Valentine’s Day in the Upper Assembly Rooms of Bath.

Ladies of the highest rank—and some who wish they were—scheme, prepare, and compete to make best use of the opportunity.

Dukes, earls, tradesmen, and the occasional charlatan are alert to the possibilities as the event draws nigh.

But anything can happen in the magic of music and candlelight as couples dance, flirt, and open themselves to romantic possibilities. Problems and conflict may just fade away at a Valentine’s Day Ball.

Beauty and the Bounder by Jessica Cale

He's a liar and a fortune-hunter... and exactly what she needs.

The moment Lady Emilia sets eyes on the Chevalier d'Aubusson, she knows their fates are tied together. For good or ill, she cannot say. A mysterious aristocrat with a tragic past, the chevalier makes waves with his considerable charm.

But the chevalier is not as he seems. There are cracks in his story, and Emilia never could resist a mystery. Whether he's a gentleman or a bounder, he might just be the man for her.

The Earl Takes a Wife by Sherry Ewing

It began with a memory, etched in the heart.

Lady Celia Lacey is too young for a husband, especially man-about-town Lord Adrian de Courtenay. But when she meets him at a house party, she falls in love.

Adrian finds the appealing innocent impossible to forget, though she is barely out of the schoolroom and a relative by marriage.

His sister's deception brings them together but destroys their happiness. Can they reach past the hurt to the love that still burns?

The Beast Next Door by Jude Knight

In all the assemblies and parties of Bath, no one Charis met could ever match the beast next door.

Charis Fishingham has always felt more at home at Eastwood— Beastwood, as the neighbours called it, after the flawed child who once lived there. In the Eastwood gardens, Charis can escape her mother's expectations, her sisters' chatter, and her own worries about her future. There, she reads and remembers her secret friend, long gone into exile to have his birthmarks removed at his family's command.

Now, the Beast has returned. Eric Lord Wayford would rather face the surgeons of Naples and Napoleon's armies than the tongues of the ton. He joyfully greets Charis, and their future looks to be full of hope.

But someone does not wish Charis to wed the Beast of Eastwood and will stop at nothing to keep them apart.

The Umbrella Chronicles: John and Emma’s Story by Amy Quinton

A serious-minded, scientific man of learning seeks a complex and chaotic practitioner of all things superstitious who will upend his well-ordered life.

The Umbrella Strikes Again! Another Bachelor Has Fallen!

Dr. John Edward Hartwell needs assistance, though not quite the kind of help he might think. True, he is well-organized, tidy, and pathologically set in his ways—a more serious-minded man one might never find. But in his ways, I have determined, lies misery.

Enter Miss Emma Merryweather—a woman who is as lovely as she is chaotic. She is the perfect candidate to compliment our man of numbers and logical focus, bringing sunshine and superstition to redirect him away from a future of certain wretchedness.

And now that she has been categorically convinced that they are destined to be together—the signs, you see—no one can stand in her way, for she is as tenacious and optimistic as she is beautiful.

Candles in the Dark by Caroline Warfield

Doug Marsh and his candles bring light to many, none more than Esther. They may light the Assembly Rooms even as his love lights her life.

Doug Marsh knew what the army expected of him. Invalided out, he struggles to run his uncle's candle-works and look after those dependent on it. A contract with the Bath Assembly Rooms would go a long way toward succeeding at both of those things. The plight of a young woman is a distraction he doesn't need.

Esther Hopkins, formerly 'the Honorable', has no time to mourn the life denied her by a single mistake. A woman alone with a newborn son to raise needs work, and she is determined to make it on her own. If only she could stop yearning for the sturdy arms and kind blue eyes of the man who rescued her from starvation and enlisted the entire Marsh Candle Works to her support. But Sergeant Marsh shows nothing but benevolent interest in her welfare. Why should he care for a fallen woman?

In the normal course of things, Esther is far above Doug's touch. Can he find the courage to court her and still take care of business at the same time?

Clearly romance is not dead. I don’t care how you spell it out, love always wins. And falling in love is one of the most special things to happen to a couple. I enjoyed all 5 of these stories but loved the first and the last ones the most! If you love regency then you’ll love these. Happy Reading!

Beauty and the Bounder
4.5stars. I loved this one and thought it very romantic. Lots of laugh out loud moments and loved the ending.

The Earl takes a Wife
3.5stars. This was good and I wanted to throw my kindle across the room TWICE! Lots of angst and finally I got the HEA I was looking for.

The Beast Next Door
3.5stars. This was a sweet retelling of sorts about Beauty and the Beast.

The Umbrella Chronicles
3 stars. Funny, silly superstitious romance.

Candles in the Dark
4.5stars. This one was my favorite and I loved it! Wonderful writing and loved Doug! ❤️

I received this ARC for free and all opinions are my own and I’ve left an honest review.

These novellas all center around Valentines Day in Bath. I’m not normally a fan of Anthologies, but I thought this would give me a chance to try some new authors plus read something by an author that I love.

Beauty and the Bounder by Jessica Cale: 2.5 Stars

This was a nice, well-written story, but it holds no resemblance to life in Regency times. So, if you aren’t into period accuracy, then you would like this story.

The Earl Takes A Wife by Sherry Ewing: 3 Stars

Lady Celia Lacey – age 17 – meets Adrian de Courtenay at a house party and she’s completely smitten. When she softly asks him to ‘wait for her’, he is intrigued by the young lady who he considers too young for himself. Over the course of the next couple of years, she remains smitten and he is more and more intrigued. When he begins to understand that he wants to marry her – they are caught in a compromising position. He believes she engineered it and is very, very bitter and unforgiving.

I understand his anger – except – he knows how manipulative and deceitful Miranda (his sister) is, so why would he automatically believe her rather than the woman he loves? She tries to explain, but he won’t listen. Also – the ‘magical’ reappearance of the mistress at the end gave me a ‘say what’ moment. She couldn’t have known where Celia was going to be, nor would she have had the time to arrive there – especially with so much money. Just struck me as very unnecessary and contrived drama.

The Beast Next Door by Jude Knight: 5 Stars

It is a sure sign of a well-told tale when you read a novella and feel you have the complete story. The characters are fully developed, likable and relatable. The story is fast-paced, well written and well plotted.

Childhood friends Charis and Eric were torn apart when Eric’s mother tore from the only home he’d ever known and sent him to Italy for some horrible surgery on a disfiguring birthmark on his face. Eric had been locked away at a country estate near Bath all of his life. He was called Beast, Wreck and many worse things. It is ten years later and Eric has returned to England with every intention of reconnecting with Charis.

Eric’s mother is a real low life and she intends for Eric to marry the woman of her choice. A woman that she can control and Eric will just have to learn to live with it. Eric plans to fully thwart his mother, reconnect with Charis – and marry her.

It is a lovely read!

The Umbrella Chronicles by Amy Quinton: 4 Stars

I loved this very amusing tale of romance. Take a staid, uptight, OCD mathematician named Dr. John Edward Hartwell, and pair him with a zany heroine, Miss Emma Merryweather, who believes in all of the ‘signs’ fate sends her and you have a delightful tale. I loved both of the characters and the author did an excellent job or conveying the quirky personalities of each

Candles In The Dark by Caroline Warfield: 5 Stars

My favorite of all – well maybe tied with The Beast Next Door.

Sergeant Douglas Marsh was wounded in the fight with Napoleon and had to leave his career in the military and at about the same time, his uncle passed away and Douglas inherited the Marsh Candle Works. Luckily his aunt had worked alongside his uncle in running the candle works, so she could help him in the transition. Marsh does his best to rescue as many of the returned wounded as he can – hiring them even though he doesn’t need them at the factory and can’t really afford the wages.

Esther Hopkins made a mistake and has paid dearly for it. She’s been cast out by her family and has been existing as best she can in Bath. She’s starving and her baby is almost due. As she loses consciousness in front of a bakery while waiting for the bread the baker would normally throw away, she’s rescued by the kindest man.

The romance Esther and Doug is so very sweet. You will quickly come to love – but more – respect both of these characters for the strong people they are. BTW – I loved how they dealt with the villain who arched across several of the books.

Definitely a good read!

Five unique voices come together with one common goal. Valentines From Bath is an ode to romance. From a rogue in need to an impetuous damsel, this anthology gives hearts something to swoon over. Jude Knight proves how tempting, temperamental can be. Jessica Cale reminds our hearts how it feels to be set free. Warfield shows the beauty of true love's kiss. While Ewing and Quinton enlighten on why love is worth the risk. Fashionably fabulous fun. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Funny, witty, enchanting. These stories are somewhat interconnected and all involve couples who had help making their love story come true. Sometimes a little deception is needed until everything can be explained. And all of these couples attend the Valentine’s Ball. I love this book! It's not often that you get an anthology of a collection of stories where you enjoy every story, but this is one you will. At least I did! If I had to choose my 3 favorites, they would be Jude Knight's tender and touching story, Sherry Ewing's wonderfully romantic story, and most of all Caroline Warfield's Candles in the Dark, which is my top favorite. But I love them all! What I particularly liked was the way the stories interweave with one another to all fit in with the setting of the Valentine's at Bath. Check this book our for a wonderfully sweet, romantic, charming, and at times humorous read!

Valentine's from Bath
A Bluestocking Belles Collection

Beauty and the Bounder
By Jessica Cale

This is Sebastian's last chance to find a rich wife. With high hopes he portrays himself as the Chevalier d'Aubusson. This is the performance of his life and he has to pull it off so he sets off to bath where he meets quite a number of rich young women, but there is only one who has caught his eye.
Lady Emilia knows from the moment she sets eyes on Seb he is not what he seems and weather he's a gentleman or a bounder, he might just be the man for her.

Jessica Cale writes a sweet tale of love and innocence. I so enjoy Ms. Cale's stories they always give me a warm fuzzy feeling in the pit of my stomach.

The Earl Takes a Wife
A de Courtenay Novella
By Sherry Ewing

Lord Adrian de Courtenay is finding Lady Ceclia Lacey hard to forget, but is she too young for marriage? She is also a relative by marriage. Then his sister's Miranda's deception brings them together, but at what cost?
Lady Cecila Lacey is in love with Adrian. It seems like she always has been although that is not the case. This is no fleeting love. This is real love and she knows it. Now all she has to do is hope Adrian will wait for her becuase he thinks she's too young, but Miranda has set them up on a course for disaster. Or has she?

Sherry Ewing is one of my favorite authors and this novella does not disappoint. I was hooked after the first few lines. I couldn't put it down. The main characters were perfect and their love was pure. Congratulations Ms. Ewing on another perfect story.

The Beast Next Door
By Jude Knight

Charis Fishingham has always felt more at home at Eastwoode or as people have called it Beastwood, after the flawed child who once lived there.
Eric Lord Wayford would rather face the surgeons of Naples and Napoleon's armies then the tongues of the ton. They once called him The Beast. Now all the Mothers of the ton have thrown their daughter's at him trying to get him to wed them. He's finally in the country and joyfully greets Charis, and their future looks to be full of hope however there is someone who does not wish Charis to wed the Beast of Eastwood, and will stop at nothing to keep them apart.
Will they be able to find love this Valentine's Day and have that future they both so badly want or will they be kept apart for good?

Jude Knight writes a fascinating story that had me from the get go. This was such a wonderful story filled with innocence and love.

The Umbrella Chronicles
John and Emma's Story
By Amy Quinton

The Umbrella Strikes Again!
Another Bachelor Has Fallen!
Lady Harriett Ross is the Self- proclaimed Motley Meddler • Mistress of Destiny • Weilder of the Infamous Umbrella
Dr. John Edward Hartwell is well organized tidy, pathologically set in his ways - a more serious minded man one might never find.
Miss Emma Merryweather is a woman who is as lovely as she is chaotic. No one can resist her beautiful smile especially when her one dimple shows. The signs have all been there and she knows she is about to meet her future husband so when she opens the door and runs right into John she is more then sure that will be her man. All I can say is poor John he never knew what hit him.

Amy Quinton is fantastic. I really enjoy the stories she writes about the Umbrella Chronicles. The two main characters were destined to be together. Aunt Harriet is amazing and any man who gets whacked with her umbrella is done his bachelor days.

Candles In The Dark
By Caroline Warfield

Douglas Marsh knew what the army
expected from him. He has been discharged as an invalid and has come home to take over his late Uncles candle works and look after to those dependent on it. He knows a contract with the Bath Assembly Rooms would go a long way toward succeeding at both of those things. The problems of a young woman is something he doesn't need.
Esther Hopkins, has no time to mourn her old life or who she used to be. A woman alone with a new born son to raise needs work, and she is determined to make it on her own without owing anyone anything. If only she could stop thinking about Douglas. His sturdy arms and kind blue eyes. He is the man who rescued her from starvation and enlisted the entire Marsh Candle Works to her support. But Sergeant Marsh shows nothing but a genuine intrest in her welfare. Why would he care for a fallen woman?
You see Esther is far above Doug's touch. Can he find the courage to court her and still care for business at the same time?

Caroline Warfeild takes us on one man and woman's journey through a strained friendship, to a quick courtship, then onto love. This beautifully written story made my heart feel so light. I was fair bursting with joy and giddiness by the end of it.

All in all this was a coming together of five master storytellers and it was so enjoyable. I was utterly engrossed from page one until the end. I found so many things in this story that made it flow perfectly from the first story where an old woman just happened to smack our hero out of the blue with an umbrella. To the second story where Eric first made an appearance. Then to the third story where some of the the previous characters came together. And on to the very last story where Mr. Fowler attacked our heroine. The flow of the stories from one into the next was magnificent. Ms. Cale, Ms. Ewing, Ms. Knight, Ms. Quinton, and Ms. Warfeild you have definitely earned my appreciation for your storytelling skills. Thank you for such a lovely book ladies.

I love the Belles stories.
The Bluestocking Belles have done it again giving the read five wonderful stories to enjoy. What I really like about the Belles is that write using language that would have been heard during the time setting. That is not always the case with some writers. I also like how well-written they are with characters that stand out. There is also humor in the tales with romance front and center oh I cannot forget a bit of drama too. You will not go wrong with this collection in your library these are stories you will re-visit time and time again. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.

“Dukes, earls, tradesmen, and a charlatan” are just a few of the characters that are promised a possible HEA for Valentine’s Day. All they have to do is show up for the assembly in Bath. Well, show up and have their stories written by the talented Bluestocking Belles. These five talented ladies work their magic in weaving stories full of love, laughter, and more than a couple of heroes balking at the idea of love. Preface the story with staff of the assembly hall getting ready for the big event and ending with the staff and clean up and you just might find a little extra bonus love thrown in.

Five stories that center around an assembly ball in Bath. Each story was heartwarming, wonderful, sweet reads. The novellas in this book hooked me from the first page. I liked how some characters from one story was mentioned in other stories. These five authors are ones I love to read and this book is no exception. Thank you all for writing a heartwarming collection of stories for Valentine's Day.

A phenomenal collection of stories from some of the best authors of historical romance. When this group come together I always know once I turn the first page I am lost until the last page is turned!! The collection is centered around a Valentine's Day ball held in the assembly rooms in Bath, England. Wow I would have loved to see that actually happening! Can you imagine? A cornucopia of characters who each try to find their happy ever after when least expected!

Beauty and the Bounder by Jessica Cale
A case of a man desperate to find a wife with money has Sebastian posing as someone he is not. But with all the women he meets, there is one that he cannot keep his eyes from and that is Lady Emilia. Her instincts tell her he is not as he appears but at times, that does not matter in love. Such a sweet story that warmed my heart and made me smile!

The Earl Takes A Wife by Sherry Ewing
Be still my heart. Meeting at a house party, Lady Celia falls completely in love with Lord Adrian. Looking into her eyes, he sees her innocence and beauty shining through but she is very young and they will soon be related by marriage! Letting her know that, as he begins to leave she tells him "Yes, well.. I suppose such may be the case. Time will tell. Time.. yes..time is all we need. Will you wait for me Lord de Courtenay..Adrian?" Wow I was so mesmerized and I could almost see her and hear the words. But things seem to go awry when his sister Miranda gets involved giving Celia advice. This is a journey to find an incomparable love that hopefully will bring the too together. Sherry's stories always grip my heart and I am left in awe.

The Beast Next Door by Jude Knight
My favorite trope comes alive in the words of one of the best storytellers I have read. Charis is one of the Fishingham sisters who know that one needs to marry for money in order for the rest to have a season and find a husband. She is the quiet sister who has never gotten over her neighbor Eric. She always was his friend and his terrible scars never bothered her. In a twist, he has feelings for her also but has gained the title of Earl but wants to make sure it is not his title that draws her. Can his omission hurt her to the point of pushing her away. Can these two find true love? I could have strangled his mother who was his greatest detractor and always belittle's him. What a wonderful story of love and redemption that made my heart smile.

The Umbrella Chronicles: John and Emma's Story by Amy Quinton
If you have not read any of the stories involving Lady Harriett, who is a matchmaker extraordinaire with her famous umbrella, you have missed some delightful tales!! Dr John Edward is a man with a compulsive nature toward order and is ruled by specific routines (yes a lot of OCD). But when he literally runs into Emma, the niece of Lady Harriet, his life is about to change!! Emma has her own foibles a little opposite of John. Well they are opposites and they do attract don't they? As fun love story filled with humor and witty banter that will entertain you until the end! Aunt Harriett strikes again!! Another marvelous story by this talented author.

Candles In the Dark by Caroline Warfield
An almost fairy tale story that won my heart from the beginning. A hero who is trying to find his place after coming home from the war with a leg injury and inheriting his Uncle's candle making business. Douglas has so much compassion with helping others who are experiencing hardships and need help. But he is trying his best to obtain a contract to supply the candles to the Assembly rooms for the Valentine dance. He meets a pregnant Esther, who has been used badly by a man of means and disowned by her father. Doug helps her and learns her secret, but will he also defend her when needed? Can these two find a happy ending? This was such an engaging story of two people trying to survive, who really needed each other. Caroline always pulls me into her world of exceptional characters who deal with life and come out the victor.

A collection of five romances set in Regency England, centred around a Valentine’s Day ball at the Upper Assembly Rooms in Bath.

I greatly enjoyed four of these stories. Unfortunately, the second tale was so much not to my taste that I strongly disliked it. The female lead’s “friend” is a manipulative, selfish, horrible person, who got her friend sexually assaulted and almost raped (which in that society ruins her character) to suit her own ends. This condemns the lead characters to a miserable sham of a marriage for months before everything is finally worked out at the end of the story. I also felt like there were far too many dramatic occurrences for such a short tale, but I am glad it wasn’t longer, as the characters are deeply unhappy for almost the whole story. The word conscious is also used instead of conscience. I’m sure there are many readers who would enjoy this story, but it’s not for me.

The third story made up for the second, it was really, really lovely. The first, fourth and fifth stories were also great.

I liked the fact that not all of the stories were entirely about the upper class. I also enjoyed the snippets at the beginning and end about the members of staff.

The way the fifth story (set at the ball) managed to relatively subtly mention characters from the other stories was a nice touch, which along with the snippets about the staff, brings the volume together as a whole. This is something you don’t often get with collections.

In summary, four excellent regency romances, and one that I personally really disliked, but may be to others tastes. Definitely worth a read for the third story alone.

Wonderfully fun collection of Regency Romance stories. Some were more authentically Regency than others, but all were an enjoyable read with an all-important HEA.

I particularly enjoyed Candles in the Dark, which was very moving in parts and appeared to be very well-researched, and The Umbrella Chronicles which was a different take on the usual Regency story, in terms of its hero in particular. But it felt authentic nonetheless and the characters were very engaging.

All the stories weave into the same setting and climax of a Valentine's Ball in Bath. I highly recommend Valentines from Bath to fans of Regency Romance.

True💘Love Runs Through It

What a wonderful box set of unusual Regency Romances💕 between true gentlemen and strong willed, educated young women!
Each novella is connected to the city of Bath, but the characters are quite different. Some are nobility, others just hardworking men. The leading men each have a common thread of being former soldiers, and each has some sort of permanent injury from war, either physical, mental, or both.
The young women💃💋 that love💕 them are smart and strong willed, and able to look past the scars and see the men for their true selves. Great reads!

ARC Received from Book Siren📚💃
I also got this ebook for $.99 from Amazon.

Jessica Cale Beauty and the Bounder:
Sebastian Virtue needs a wife, a rich wife. The plan, meet, charm and compromise a lovely rich young lady. Seb has a few secrets and one is he is a talented actor. It should be no problem. Unless the problem of falling for the beautiful women comes into play. He meets Emilia and falls head over heel. The problem she is not easily compromised. She is smart, savvy and knows what she wants. She has two loving parents who don’t give a fig about what the ton thinks, which I might add was extremely refreshing to read. Usually the father or mother sometimes both think only of themselves and what looks right. They only care what about their daughter’s happiness…Results are humor, love and most definitely a HEA! Fun read!

Sherry Ewing The Earl Takes a Wife:
Celia is an old 16-year-old when she asks a man of 25 to wait for her. She knows Adrian is the one for her. He is attracted but with her being that age is fighting it. His sister Grace has married her Uncle and now he feels that since they are family, they should just be friends. His other Sister Miranda behaves indecently at a house party (she is trying to claim a “titled gentlemen”) and Adrian lays into her. Now She is angry and decides to “Help” Celia snag her brother. She tricks Celia into believing that if Celia makes Adrian jealous so that he will marry her. Well things don’t go as planned and Celia soon realizes Miranda is no friend. Something horrible happens and Adrian comes to the rescue but again Miranda’s lies soon get both Celia and Adrian to the alter. Celia has to convince and a very bitter Adrian she has not lied, or she is going to live unhappily ever after.

Jude Knight The Beast Next Door:
The Fishingham girls know that at least one sister must make a wonderful match this season. Money is running low and if one were to marry a rich man then the rest can afford to continue their seasons to find their match. They all know what is expected and do their best to remake their dresses to look new. Only one sister does not feel the urgent need to land a husband. Charis is willing to marry but she is quiet, smart and loves to read. Plus, she has never gotten over her neighbor Eric. The two were best of friends. It never bothered her that he has horrific scars on his face or that his mother is actually the Beast of Beastwood. Eric was born with a birthmark on his face, his mother hated it so much her hatred turned to him. She sent Eric away to have it removed and the surgeon botched it up leaving Eric with horrible scars. All his life he has lived with the name calling, stares and hatred from his mother (who calls him Wretch). There is only one person that has never been bothered, Charis. She is the one he wants to marry. Only she doesn’t know he is an Earl. Will it bother that he has lied (so he can be sure she loves him not the title) or that his mother is a beast that needs to be dealt with. Truly a happy love story!!

Amy Quinton~ The Umbrella Chronicles, John and Emma’s Story:
Dr John Hartwell is set in his ways. Quirks you might actually say. Even numbers, science and math in everything, nothing left to chance. He has his routine, five pairs of the exact same slippers even how he cleans his glasses. He wants to become a professor at Oxford, which requires you to be unmarried, so no love for him. Enters Aunt Harriet and her infamous umbrella. She has her next victim, I mean match all set. Her darling niece Emma Merryweather and Dr John. Emma though is the complete opposite of Dr. John. She believes in sign, magic, and everything odd. She gives new meaning to the word superstitious. Mix the two together and BAM you have a wonderful, humorous love story. Emma is just the person to convince Dr. John he truly doesn’t want that ole Oxford Professorship. Why Aunt Harriet, you’ve done it again!!

Caroline Warfield ~ Candles in the Dark:

I love anthologies. The stories are short enough to allow you to read in one sitting while still allowing you to dream of the handsome suitor.

Wouldn't it be nice if anyone could have been a part of English Society?
In the first story, "Beauty and the Bounder," the Chevalier d'Aubusson sets out to do just that. He is a man of mystery, but is somehow accepted by the society in Bath.
Lady Amelia knows that she must have him. She is also determined to find out who the real person is. The one behind the mask.

In the second story, "The Earl Takes a Wife,"
Lady Celia sets her cap for Lord Adrian de Courtenay. She insists that he waits for her. He insists that she is way too young. With the help of Adrian's scheming younger sister, their lives get turned upside down.

In story number three, "The Beast Next Door," we meet Charis Fishingham. She is more of a blue stocking than a society miss. thmarks that covered his face. His family never approved. Her family insists on being a part of society, but she longs to find her secret friend who she played with as a child. This secret friend had birth marks on his face that his family did not approve of. Due to this, he was removed into exile to have them removed.
Now, Eric, Lord Wayford, has returned. He has unexpectedly become a peer of society at his brother's death. He does not wish to be a part of society but he must.
When Charis and Eric meet again, they must decide what is important. Is it a title, is it each other, is it their families wishes?

In story number four, "The Umbrella Chronicles, John and Emma's story," Dr. John Hartwell is summoned to Bath. He finds out unexpectedly that he is supposed to present his scientific findings at a house party. A house party that he never said he would attend. His appearance is extremely neat, he is always extremely organized, and he would not have it any other way.
Miss Emma Merryweather is chaotic. She does not have a care for her appearance, she looks nice, but that is enough. She brings happiness wherever she goes, and she is very superstitious.
When Emma and John get thrown together at this house party, their is definitely an attraction. However, Emma must convince John that it is there.
Do two opposites attract? Who knows, but you should read this story to find out.

In the fifth and final story, "Candles in the Dark," we meet Doug Marsh.
He is an invalid who served in the Army, where he was wounded. He is now in charge of his Uncle's candle-works. He is looking forward to obtaining a contract with the Bath Assembly Rooms. This would help his struggling business immensely.
Esther Hopkins, was once an honorable lady. Unfortunately she has fallen from grace. When she faints at the feet of Doug marsh, he decides that he must help this pregnant homeless woman. He gets her back to her lodgings and he contracts with a boy who can bring her milk and cheese. That is not all he does. He cannot stand to see a mother and her child starve, or go without necessity's.
As Esther gets to know Doug, she is intrigued, and she starts yearning to have a man like Dough. She would love that man to be Doug.
Doug needs to focus on the candle-works and not the lovely distraction of Esther and her new baby.
As they grow together an attraction grows. Only one problem, they can't act upon it.

These stories were wonderful. I loved the way each author chose to tell their own little Valentines story. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This collection of five short stories takes place in and around Bath, England. The only author I'm familiar with is Caroline Warfield, and she's a favorite. From what I can tell, all of these stories were new for this publication in 2019. After reading these stories, I'm disappointed with this purchase. Ratings are offered after each title. The individual scores round up to 3.5 stars.

Beauty and the Bounder (Jessica Cale) -- VG
This is an unusual and quirky story about a stage actor, Sebastian Virtue, who realizes he must find a rich wife. So he sets out with a French accent, title, and fine clothing to assault the ton. His idea is to compromise a wealthy woman and quickly marry her (before she overthinks). However, all his plans come to naught when he meets Lady Emilia. This is a cute and clever story.

The Earl Takes a Wife (Sherry Ewing) -- 2 STARS
I couldn't get past the third chapter of this drivel. I don't find a sixteen-year-old lady chasing after a man about ten years older an exciting way to spend my reading time. Lady Celia is too conniving and worldly. Miranda will marry when she catches someone with a title. These characters are relatively loathsome and not attractive.

The Beast Next Door (Jude Knight) -- G
Charis Fishingham is the eldest of three sisters. Someone must marry well this season, or things will get dicey for the family. The girls already remake their dresses, so they look new. Charis is still enthralled with her neighbor, Eric. However, she hasn't seen him in ten years since he got horrible scars on his face (trying to remove a birthmark from his face surgically). This is a terrible story of how his mother, Lady Mayford, calls him Wretch. Now that her two older sons have died, Eric has become the earl (unbeknownst to Charis). Eric's mother thinks that if she controls whom Eric marries, she can continue to hold the money in the estate. Eric's mother has a lot to learn. Other than H and h, most of the characters are odious.

The Umbrella Chronicles (Amy Quinton) -- 2.5 stars
This is another dud. I searched this author and found that she specializes in a Lady Harriet, a matchmaker, with an umbrella (I suppose to clobber recalcitrant bridegroom from avoiding the altar). I tried to stick with precise Dr. John Hartwell and airhead Emma Merryweather. But by Chapter 7, I gave up. Perhaps this author thinks her writing style is amusing; I don't.

Candles in the Dark (Caroline Warfield) -- E
Sergeant Douglas Marsh left the army after a leg injury. Luckier than most, Doug has inherited his uncle's candle-making factory. He lives with his aunt and shares his trials with her. She has always been a partner with her husband in the business and has many intelligent points to add. Doug is trying to get the Assembly Rooms to try his less-expensive but better candles.

Esther is pregnant when she sees Doug Marsh at the bakery. She has been abandoned by the baby's father and her own family. She is nearly destitute but understands the bakery sells day-old bread cheaply at the end of the day. While waiting for the bread, Esther faints, and Dou helps her.

Because Doug considers himself fortunate to have a job, he tries to help others in trouble. He helps unemployed ex-soldiers find employment and a job for Esther after she has her baby. However, Mr. Fowler, her direct boss, recognizes Esther and attacks Esther in a cloakroom. Esther is desperate for this job. What should she do?

The Master of Ceremonies announces a great ball to be held on Valentine's Day in the Upper Assembly Rooms of Bath.
But anything can happen in the magic of music and candlelight as couples dance, flirt, and open themselves to romantic possibilities. Problems and conflict may just fade away at a Valentine's Day Ball.

Beauty and the Bounder, by Jessica Cale. He's a liar and a fortune-hunter... and exactly what she needs.
This is Sebastian's last chance to find a rich wife so he portrays himself as the Chevalier d'Aubusson & sets off to bath where he meets quite a number of rich young women, but there is only one who has caught his eye, Lady Emilia
The Earl Takes a Wife, by Sherry Ewing. It began with a memory, etched in the heart.
Lord Adrian de Courtenay is finding Lady Ceclia Lacey hard to forget, but is she too young for marriage & she’s also a relative by marriage. Then his sister's Miranda's deception brings them together
The Beast Next Door, by Jude Knight. In all the assemblies and parties of Bath, no-one Charis met could ever match the beast next door.
The Umbrella Chronicles: John and Emma's Story, by Amy Quinton. A serious-minded, scientific man of learning seeks a complex and chaotic practitioner of all things superstitious who will upend his well-ordered life.
Lady Harriett Ross is the Self- proclaimed Motley Meddler & Wielder of the Infamous Umbrella
Dr. John Edward Hartwell is well organized tidy, pathologically set in his ways - a more serious minded man one might never find. Miss Emma Merryweather is a woman who is as lovely as she is chaotic. No one can resist her beautiful smile especially when her one dimple shows
Candles in the Dark, by Caroline Warfield. Doug Marsh and his candles bring light to many, none more than Esther. They may light the Assembly Rooms even as his love lights her life.
Douglas Marsh knew what the army expected from him. He has been discharged as an invalid and has come home to take over his late Uncles candle works and look after to those dependent on it. He knows a contract with the Bath Assembly Rooms would go a long way toward succeeding at both of those things. Esther Hopkins, has no time to mourn her old life or who she used to be. A woman alone with a new born son to raise needs work,
I love the Bluestocking Belles anthologies it’s like getting your favourite box of chocolates, you know they are indulgent, you are going to thoroughly enjoy them & you won’t be content with devouring only one. I'm always in awe of authors who band together to produce an anthology of books that whilst each novella stands on its own there are characters that overlap. Each novella is very well written & the characters are well portrayed. The pace of each is good & I read each one in a sitting. Yet again the Bluestocking Belles have produced a lovely set of short stories
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

This book is a compilation of Regency novellas revolving around (or ending up at) a Valentine's Day ball in Bath. As is to be expected, some of these novellas were much better than others. Wish they had all been that way. Usually, I average the individual ratings, but felt like the better novellas deserved higher visibility than they would get with a 3-star rating.

Beauty and the Bounder by Jessica Cale. 4.5 stars. This novella was quirky and had real tongue in cheek humor. Some of our heroine's thoughts were over the top, but she's new to being crazy attracted to someone, so it can be forgiven. I loved the tie in with the meanings attributed to various flowers. I wonder how many of them we can easily purchase at the florist's nowadays.

The Earl Takes a Wife by Sherry Ewing. 1 star. This novella had an unlikable main male character, a surprisingly awful backup character, and two silly female characters. Tough to enjoy a book when you don't like anyone in it.

The Beast Next Door by Jude Knight. 5 stars. This novella was sweet, well-paced, and unpredictable. The characters both appear true to life and likable. The story doesn't get too wrapped up in the villainess or Charis' sisters. Enable from beginning to end. Very easy to fall in love with Ugo.

The Umbrella Chronicles: John and Emma's Story by Amy Quinton. 1 star. The superstitions in this book were interesting, as I had never heard of many of them and don't believe much in "signs". The main female character was led more by these signs than by rationale decisions, which was very frustrating. The main male character appears to be autistic with some degree of OCD. I couldn't look past his "eccentricities" and think both Emma and John are going to have a difficult time living in reality. While differences can enhance a relationship, sometimes they just hurt too much and make things too tough, especially when they impact the kind of person you are and how much potential you find in the world. Near the end, the characters overlap with those from other stories in this compilation but it is done so loosely and didn't add anything significant -- more of an unnecessary throwaway. Not an enjoyable story.

Candles in the Dark by Caroline Warfield. 4.5 stars. This novella was interesting and sweet and redemptive. The two main male characters just seemed to be "good people" seeking to help others. Our main female character was also likable, despite her unfortunate circumstances. The details about the candles and the society subscriptions were interesting. I would have given this five stars were it not for the over-the-top villany of the subscriptions boss. Definitely worth the read.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions above are my own.

This is the first book I’ve read by the Bluestocking Belles and it won’t be my last. It is no secret that I am a huge fan of regency romance. This collection of regency tales all center on a ball that is taking place on Valentine’s Day in the Upper Assembly rooms in Bath. I loved that different characters and circumstances appeared in various stories to create different threads that wove together to create a great overall story of the ball.

Beauty and the Bounder by Jessica Cale. Lady Emilia is at an age where people are starting to talk about why she is still single even thought she is a beauty with a large fortune. Emilia wants adventure in her life and someone that loves her for herself. When she meets Seb, she realizes he is a man with secrets who is looking to marry wealth. He may just be just what she needs.

The Earl Takes a Wife by Sherry Ewing - Celia loves Adrian, but how will she convince him that she is more than a school girl?

The Beast Next Door by Jude Knight – Charis has always taken refuge at the estate next door with her friend Eric, who others have nicknamed “the beast”. She is happy that Eric has finally returned from a long trip abroad. When her mother tries to force her into an unwanted marriage, will Charis be able to convince others that the “Beast” is really the man for her?

The Umbrella Chronicles by Amy Quinton – Miss Emma Merryweather is a messy young woman, but for whatever reason, when the buttoned-up professor Dr. John Hartwell comes for a visit, he can’t stop himself from wanting to be near her at all times. Will these two different souls find a way to be together?

Candles in the Dark by Caroline Warfield – Doug Marsh is a veteran of the Napoleonic wars and is trying to get a contract for making candles for the Assembly Rooms. Doug also tries to help out others in need, especially veterans. When he meets the mysterious Esther, he tries to help her as he can, but he also finds himself drawn to her. What is Esther’s secret and can she and Doug find happiness?

Overall, I enjoyed all of the tales in Valentine’s from Bath. Just when I would decide that one story was my favorite, I would read another and find a new favorite. I love short stories and I just loved that this collection brought together a great assortment of people attending or providing supplies for a regency ball in Bath. It was a delightful romance collection.

I received an ARC of this book for an honest review

Beauty and the Bounder by Jessica Cale.
I loved this story; the characters were so much fun to read about. Lady Emilia was a rare female who spoke her mind and didn’t suffer fools, no matter the result. She wasn’t willing to settle for a marriage of convenience and refused anyone unless they loved her completely and weren’t looking for a wife to look the other way while they went off with a mistress. The minute Lady Emilia sets eyes on the Chevalier d’Aubusson the fun begins. We learn early on that the Chevalier isn’t what he seems and that his original plan is to catch a rich wife, any female. His plans change as soon as he sees and talks to Lady Emilia. It’s a good thing they both have supporters in their corner to help push these 2 along. Does Emilia find what she’s looking for? Does the Chevalier? Read and find out.

The Earl Takes a Wife by Sherry Ewing
I was enjoying this story until about 3/4 of the way through the story. The hero of the story turned into a huge douchebag who really didn’t deserve the heroine. In the end I had so little respect for either character that I just didn’t care. The hero should have been begging for forgiveness and the the heroine should have had more respect for herself and not just accepted the hero’s words as truth, after all actions say much more than words.

The Beast Next Door by Jude Knight
I liked this story of 2 friends who hadn’t seen each other for 10 years. Both have thought of each other over the years that they have been apart and now as adults have discovered that they love each other, but there are others who don’t like the idea of these 2 together. A flighty mother, a wench of a mother, twins who are typical of females of that time, a young man who had been mistreated by his family since birth, a strong female lead and a wonderful big dog... this one has it all.

4th story is The Umbrella Chronicles by Amy Quinton

What a sweet story with such an interesting couple of characters. Loved it and I think chapter 13 just finishes it off perfectly.

5th story is Candles in the Dark by Caroline Warfield
A wonderful story to close this book off. Again I enjoyed the characters in this story but there is a certain unscrupulous character mentioned a few times throughout this book that I would have loved to see get his comeuppance. Oh well, not every tale can have a perfect ending.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical romance.

This marvelous collection has five different stories that will make you smile, nash your teeth, and then smile some more. All have a villian who ends up thwarted and a couple who find their way to bliss in each other’s arms. They are short, well written, easy to read and lots and lots of fun!
Beauty and the Bounder - Jessica Cale
What a delicious story! Emelia is a talented fiesty nonconventional lady, and Sebastian is every girl’s fantasy. The society ladys are scheming and coniving and the twists and surprises are wonderful. This is such a fun story!
The Earl Takes a Wife - Sherry Ewing
Celia fell in love with Adrian when she was too young to marry. A few years later she was courted by a Marquess, at her father’s behest, even though her heart still belonged to Adrian. Multiple events and the manipulations of a certain young lady caused a major change in Adrian and her relationship. However, things were not as she had hoped. This is a wonderful novella with lots of emotional conflict and charming characters. A quick fun read.
The Beast Next Door - Jude Knight
Charis and Eric hadn’t seen each other for ten years, not since they lived next door to each other as children. Once reunited, they courted in secret, even though her mother wanted her to marry a certain earl. This is a delightful story about being true to yourself and overcoming certain obstacles to find your happy ending.
The Umbrella Chronicles - Amy Quinton
This is a quirky tale about carefree young lady who believes in magic and signs, and a very regimented mathmatician. The characters in this story are a hoot. They are vividly depicted, easily imaginable and fun.
Candles in the Dark - Carolyn Warfield
A disgraced lady, an invalid army sergeant, a slimy house manager, an earl and a baby make for a lovely little story with a heartwarming ending. It is a well written tale that will remind you that good guys still exist and sometimes even triumph.

What do I love most about a Bluestocking Belle anthology? It is hard to name just one thing. First, there are the stories themselves, each one uniquely belonging to its author. Second there are the great characters, not always of the quality ton, but always quality people. Third, the locations, not always London, but often take place in Bath. Most of all, I love the way the characters are intertwined through an event and appear in another author's story. In this case, the events surround the Bath Valentine's Ball. Occasionally, we will spy a character from a preceding collection. Anthologies allow a reader to enjoy tales from their favorite authors in one place. Although I enjoyed all of the offerings in this anthology, I particularly liked the last three offerings. Jude Knight gave a new twist to the age old story of the Beauty and the Beast, leaving me cheering all the way for the beast. I just can not get enough of Amy Quinton's Umbrella Chronicles and Lady Harriet. Well, Lady Harriet's umbrella is on the prowl once again and has Dr. John Hartwell and Miss Emma Merryweather in its sites. Two very different people, how will they ever come together? The last story by Caroline Warfield just restores your faith in humanity. Whether in 1814 or today, the world could use more people like Doug Marsh. I have read several of the Bluestocking Belle anthologies and have enjoyed beach and every one. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
