Memorial day is a different holiday - it's not necessarily fun and exciting, but serious. It started after the civil war when people looked for ways to remember soldiers who died. More Americans died in the civil war than any other war. Memorial day was originally called decoration day, and civil war soldiers' graves were decorated with flowers, wreaths, or flags. The day was also known as "A Day of Remembrance." Thousands of people celebrated but it didn't become an official holiday until 1971.

The chapter about the history of memorial day includes a painting of people decorating soldiers' graves in the 1800s and a photo of a memorial day cemetery in France after WWI in 1929 honoring American soldiers. Since WWI, people have set aside Memorial day to honor those who died in all American wars.

A spread on page 16-17 tells about the wearing of poppies in honor of Americans who died in war.
The author erroneously writes that Moina Michael decided to wear a red poppy in 1915. Actually, Moina's idea to wear a red poppy came in 1918. Poppies began to grow after the winter of 1914-1915 when the weather turned warm.

The next chapter briefly discusses the various American wars and the purpose for fighting wars. A short discussion of communism is included and a photo of the Vietnam Women's Memorial in Washington DC. Next, the Iraq war is mentioned and the terrorist attacks of 2001.

The next chapter talks about the purpose of military servicemen to protect and serve and the different roles exist within their organizations.

Next is a page about the tomb of the unknowns - soldiers who died but can't be identified, but still deserve to be honored for their bravery and sacrifice.

Lastly is a chapter about memorial day and what kinds of things we do to remember the one million plus soldiers who were killed in battle. Visiting war memorials and monuments, special memorial service at Arlington National Cemetery, listening to a speech from the president of the United States, attending prayer services, flying flags at half-mast, visiting cemeteries to decorate soldiers graves, etc.

This is a helpful and informational book about Memorial day that will inspire the reader to honor the true purpose for Memorial Day.
