Louis Marie-Anne Couperus (June 10, 1863 – July 16, 1923) was a Dutch novelist and poet of the late 19th and early 20th century. He is usually considered one of the foremost figures in Dutch literature.

De eerste twee verhalen vond ik het minst boeiend. Je kunt ze lezen voor Couperus’ taal, maar verder mis je er weinig aan. De dood van Vesta, over de laatste Vestaalse maagd in een christelijk Rome, is niet alleen mooi geschreven maar ook echt ontroerend.
Dan volgen drie lezenswaardige verhalen over het levenseinde van drie keizers: Hadrianus, Commodus en Caligula. Het verhaal Van twee gestolen liefdesgodjes is wel grappig maar ik vond het toch ook wat flauw en een morgen vol anekdotes is een aardige schets van decadent Rome.
De balling te Tomi, over Ovidius, is weer een hoogtepunt en na het scatologische niemendalletje Tusschen de Ionische zuiltjes rondt Couperus de bundel af met een uiterst vermakelijke bewerking van een stuk van Petronius’ Satyricon: Van vagebonden en schelmen.
Ik ben blij dat ik het niet na de eerste twee verhalen voor gezien heb gehouden.
