From the hit film director Kevin Smith comes a how-not-to guide to superheroics. Meet Bluntman and Chronic, the bumbling crimefighting aliases of Jay & Silent Bob.
Kevin Patrick Smith is an American screenwriter, director, as well as a comic book writer, author, and actor. He is also the co-founder, with Scott Mosier, of View Askew Productions and owner of Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash comic and novelty store in Red Bank, New Jersey. He also hosts a weekly podcast with Scott Mosier known as SModcast. He is also known for participating in long, humorous Q&A Sessions that are often filmed for DVD release, beginning with An Evening with Kevin Smith.
His films are often set in his home state of New Jersey, and while not strictly sequential, they do frequently feature crossover plot elements, character references, and a shared canon in what is known by fans as the "View Askewniverse", named after his production company View Askew Productions. He has produced numerous films and television projects, including Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Clerks II.
no? what? no no no... wait what? nooooo why kevin smith you ruined my childhood I f'in love jay and silent bob I loved all of your jay and silent bob universe movies and I loved clerks the animated series how did you f this up this is your thing, this is what you do, you eat sleep and shit these characters. how?! I wanted this to be good so bad I give this comic a three but it's more like a 2 and it only gets that because I love jay and silent bob and some parts were funny but that's it and most of it is dick and fart jokes anyways that's it I'm too mad to even punctuate
p.s. I can't believe you made an animated movie out of this comic that was somehow even more shit I hate what you have become I want the 90s back
Being a massive fan of Kevin Smith films and comicbooks, I can't not love this. Its daft, yet with characters from his films written in, it gives me all the nostalgia I was hoping for
While I know that saying "you have to have seen & liked the other Kevin Smith stuff" seems like a no brainer, there's very much the possibility that someone could pick up this comic & not have been aware of the universe this is a part of. So if you are new to the Kevin Smith world, you'll want to pass over this until you have at least seen Chasing Amy, Mallrats, & Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Those three movies (especially the last one) will give you a good background on the characters, the comic & the overall tone of Smith's work. If you didn't like those movies, well... you aren't going to like this book.
Bluntman & Chronic is the comic book that Holden McNeil & Banky Edwards were working on in Chasing Amy. Now Smith fans can read the comic book that the two were working on, the comic book that sets up the premise for Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back.
Overall, I liked the comic well enough. It's got decent artwork that I've come to expect from the View Askew people & I feel that the playful feeling of the art really does help to establish the tongue in cheek ribbing that is aimed at the comic book world in general. The only problem is that this comic really doesn't do anything to make it stand on it's own & much of the humor in it is pretty repetitive. Luckily the comic is pretty short, so the repetitive jokes aren't really repeated for all that long. It's just that after having read some of the other comics put out by Kevin Smith, this really isn't one of the better ones.
Basically, this is something that collectors & die-hards might want to get, but everyone else might want to just borrow their friend's copy instead.
Well, this is a pretty short collection of Bluntman and Chronic who are alter egos of Jay and Silent Bob who are alter egos of Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes, and it is pretty much what you'd expect it to be, if you expect it to be a parody on almost every popular superhero comic. If you have watched Jay & Silent Bob's Super Groovy Cartoon Movie you are forgiven if you skip this because there is little to no content in this collection that was not in the cartoon movie. The art is great, as you would expect from Michael Avon Oeming, and kind of reminds me of the Clerks animated series. Bottom line: a fun read for Bluntman and Chronic, Jay and Silent Bob, and Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes fans.
This is by far the most amazing comic I have ever read. One needs to be familiar with almost the entire works of Kevin Smith (Namely, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back...having a knowledge of Clerks helps as well).
For die-hard Smith fans, this comic will rock your world. It is everything we have come to expect from his genious and hilarious mind.
Hilarious. I love Jay and his absolute genius stupidity! They're too filthy for hookers, there's a character called dickhead shaped as a dick and lesbians fucking everywhere. What more can u want from a comic!! It's as amazing when silent bob says his one word at the end of the story as when it happens in the film.
First half is much better than the cover/subject matter would lead you to believe second half lets itself down. Well drawn, some excellent parody at the start which was very reminiscent of the TV show but falls apart halfway through I don't know if it was creative differences or they just got distracted btu over all it's worth a look.
