Blissfully Blindsided

Rate this book
Blaze Sonnier has had a bad year. In the spring she made national news while dressed as the Easter Bunny in a brawl where she was trying to defend herself, and earned the moniker Bitch Slap Bunny. In the fall the mother who abandoned Blaze for an acting career showed up on her doorstep, not only injured from an accident but broke and in need of a place to stay. While on a bike ride to purge her stress Blaze encounters one small (in physical stature only) silver lining with a flat tire. The job Caleigh Breaux took after graduating college required her to live as a nomad into her late thirties. Weary of traveling, hotels and being unable to have a real relationship, she made a career change. Though she hoped the change would lead her to meet the woman of her dreams she’s stunned when it happens the night she rolls into the town of Falcon, Louisiana. In her latest romantic comedy, Robin Alexander has woven another tale with her trademark humor about small-town life, family, forgiveness, and falling in love.

Born in 1965, Robin Alexander grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where she still resides. An avid reader of Lesbian fiction, Robin decided to take the leap and try her hand at writing. It didn't take long for her favorite hobby to become a full-time author.
Since her heritage is Scottish and Irish and she’s allergic to seafood, she’s considered an honorary Cajun. When she’s not writing, she’s exploring her state with the top off her Jeep in search of the small towns on the water that inspire her.
Robin is awkward, sometimes shy, loaded with anxieties, accident prone, dangerous with power tools, and has been known to make idiotic decisions. She has been fortunate enough to turn her shortcomings into the hilarious characters you’ll find in her novels and short stories. Her passion is writing funny tales about falling in love, being imperfect and reveling in friendship.
Robin is convinced she has the best job in the world, and she’s extremely grateful for her fans who support her and enable her to do what she loves.

I never read the blurb when the new Robin Alexander comes out because I buy it and put everything else I’m reading at that moment on hold and enjoy myself.

What I’ve come to know and love about her stories, her main characters fall into a drama-free relationship pretty early in the book. They have tons of fun together, they are lovers and best buddies and most importantly they communicate. Refreshing, right? Also Alexander is one of the only authors who brings a nice dose of hilarity to the bedroom and I love that. Sex is about having fun after all.

So prepare yourself for a fun romance amidst crazy family antics in a small Southern town.

f/f

Themes: crazy bunny, sisters, mommy issues, wacky hormones due to menopause (I never had it this bad), I’ve got some notes & highlights to give you a sample of the silliness, I would have loved to read this to book club buddie D.

I read this while ill - how ill? Well, let's just say that when I laughed, I also gasped in pain. So, obviously, this is a book I'll have to reread some day as I was very much both in the mood for the book but not physically capable of reading the book. mmphs.

3.9 stars. Some of the best comedy in this newest addition to the Alexander lineup but I didn't enjoy the romance as much. It started up too fast, almost as a foregone conclusion. They're both lesbians and single so they get together and it works out. I like me some more buildup which is pretty much nonexistent here.

That cover though... It's taunting me! Why did she stretch the image to fit the cover? Argh! At this point, the covers must be an intentional joke. Surely she can afford a proper graphic designer by now.

Otherwise, another solid from Alexander. I'll always be a fan.

Caleigh dropped an armload of boxes onto the road. “I am that woman. Oh, my God! I am! I can’t change a tire! I have a ton of shoes! I don’t know how to work in an office, and this is proof!”
Roughly four months after my first read of this book, I’ve returned. I’d always planned on returning – it felt wrong that I’d rated the book so lowly, especially as I’d read it (and admitted to having read it) while ill. The kind of ill that caused pain when I laughed – and this is a rather humorous book – which I’ve found out again with my reread.

I’ve stated it before, but there’s just something about Alexander’s main characters that cause me to rather like them. There are exceptions here or there (I didn’t particularly like the main characters in, I think it was, ‘Pitifully Ugly’), but I, for the most part, rather enjoy my time spent with both of the main characters in Alexander books. The side characters tend to have personalities of their own – as in they tend to not be filters/ciphers, but I do not always particularly like them. The minor characters who had major level page time, in this specific book, tended to be fun to be with as well.

Right so – this is a humorous lesbian romance book with graphic depictions of a sexual nature (though many of their interactions tended to also include intrusions of a humorous nature) involving two women, at the main character level, in their mid to late thirties (37 and 39 – with ‘the short one’ (my words, not words used in the book, no this isn’t filled with that type of fanfiction wordage) being the older of the two – that being Caleigh).

Caleigh is new in the small town, though her grandparents live across the street from her house. She’s moved to this small town to finally ‘settle down’ – her old job consisted of a lot of traveling. The book opens with her on the side of the road attempting to deal with a flat tire – whereupon the other main character of the book, Blaze, rode up on her bike and helped. Even though one was suffering the pain of improper biking clothing*, and the other is suffering a kind of panic-attack kaboom – they have a good meeting.

‘*’ -
”Why do you look like you’ve been riding a horse non-stop for twenty-four hours?”

Before Caleigh can even express anything about the meeting with Blaze (not that she was going to – she doesn’t want to add to her grandparents desire to see her as ‘the baby’), Caleigh learns that her grandmother doesn’t like Blaze – and her grandmother has a tendency to like everyone.

Somehow or another, despite certain roadblocks (like the disliking grandmother), the two begin dating – though it keeps getting interrupted by family members (like the estranged mother, and the menopausing sister) and other stuff.

Great humorous book. Enjoyable. Even the minor characters are occasionally fun to spend time with.

[grandpa Dean to coworker] “You said a word we’re not allowed to say in mixed company, so I thought we could talk about local lesbians. Young ones, from the ages of around thirty to forty.”

Carey frowned. “You have never weirded me out till now.”

It was silly and funny in that Robin Alexander unique way. It was “normal” and I liked that a lot. Nothing super angsty and dramatic, no big obstacle in the relationship, nothing but stupid funny stuff and family interactions.

The MCs do start dating pretty fast, but for me it look organic and nice, not rushed. Blaze and Ronnie sibling interactions made me laugh. I felt the lack of Frank and Clint, they were important to the lives of those women but they were just a side note.

I would have liked to see more of Caleigh’s family members, just because, not that it would have bring something to the story. Also, knowing how things turned out at her work would have been nice.

I’m a fan of Robin Alexander, and it was a easy angst free romance so it’s a 5 stars rating from me.

Great narration by Lori Prince, especially since there were so many different characters to give voices to. Her male voices were quite unique in this audiobook in my opinion.
As often with Robin Alexander books this one was hilarious and funny. Particularly the second characters were lovely. The “mono pausing” sister will forever hold a special place in my heart. She was written so over the top by Alexander with her problems that one feels with her.
So when you’re in need of a feel good romance with no angst here’s the book/audiobook for you.

And as always, most of her books always crack me up. I always like how most of her books are funny and made me laugh, and have family involves that make the story more fun.

This book is the same. Both main characters and Ronnie are hilarious. They’re kind of crazy in good and funny way.

Robin Alexander truly earns her crown as the queen of sapphic comedies! Every single one of her books has made me laugh out loud, and Blissfully Blindsided is no exception. Blaze and Caleigh are such charming leads—their romance is incredibly sweet, lighthearted, and full of sharp, witty banter. And it’s not just the main characters that shine; the secondary characters are so well-developed that I found myself almost as invested in them as in Blaze and Caleigh. It's a delightful, feel-good read that's sure to lift your spirits!

Review of Blissfully Blindsided by Robin Alexander, narrated by Lori Prince

Robin Alexander is releasing all her back catalogue in audio format, most of them with Lori Prince as narrator. Ms. Alexander’s quirky sense of humour and Lori Prince’s awesome comedic timing is a perfect match. So if you are looking for a few hours of entertainment with a funny story, this is a good choice.

Blaze Sonnier is having a bad year, after being dragged into a fight that she didn’t cause, she’s been accused of being a bully. To top it all, her estranged mother, who abandoned her for an acting career, appears on her doorstep injured and broke looking for a place to stay. But her luck seems to be changing when she helps a stranger to change her car tire. Caleigh Breaux is moving to Blaze’s small town of Falcon, Louisianna in search of a career change and a quieter life. The least she was expecting was to meet the woman of her dreams there…

This is another sweet romance, with no angst, ridiculously funny situations, and comic dialogues. The background is a Louisianna small town in which everyone minds their neighbours business, a setting typical of this author. If you’ve read one of Robin Alexander’s books, you know what to expect, her style is very distinctive, so much so, that if you read a chapter without being told who’s the writer, you’ll recognise it straight away. Ms. Alexander’s eccentric characters, absurd situations and hilarious take on menopause are a trademark:

“We’re looking for something for menopause.”
“Alcohol is in aisle two, fans in aisle six, stress squeeze balls are in aisle eight, and snacks are in aisles three and four,” the clerk replied. “Before you ask, we don’t sell weapons of any kind, not even pepper spray.”

Blissfully Blindsided is partly a romance and party a family life novel. It’s about reconciliation, redemption, and coming together as a family. Blaze and her family embark on a journey of transformation that changes them by letting the past go and looking forward to a brighter future. The romance is sweet, quirky, and without angst. Romance fans might find that it’s mostly in the background compared to other parts of the story which carry more weight. So if you are looking for tension, push-pull dynamic, pining, or angst, this is definitely not your kind of romance. However, there’s something to be said about small-town, family-centered comedies like this one.

Lori Prince shows off all her comedy talent in this audiobook. The story features one hilarious situation after the other which Ms. Prince delivers like the absolute pro that she is. She is perfect for the fast-paced dialogues and the overall humorous tone. There are a few emotional moments, all very short, that Ms. Prince delivers skilfully. If you are looking for a few hours of good laughs intertwined with brief touching moments, then this audiobook is for you. 4.5 stars.

4.25 - Another hilariously sweet Alexander offering

If there is one thing I can count on with Robin Alexander, it is that her novels will be populated by zany and interesting characters. One of the things I always love about Alexander’s novels is the way she crafts such unique people. And it’s not just her main characters, but each and every secondary character gets the same treatment.

I enjoyed the fact that there was zero angst in this novel. It was light, hilarious, and delivered that happy ending I like in a romance novel. One slight negative for me was that this totally fell into the lesbian U-Haul trope. But their relative speed of 0-60 in the dating aspect was overshadowed by the fun and funny story itself.

Never disappointing. I now own a dozen novels by Robin Alexander and every single one has been a joy. Any fan of Robin Alexander will know they’re getting a great read. And anyone who is new to Robin Alexander will become a fan.

This ARC was given to me in exchange for an honest review.

This was really the sweetest romance…

Blaze hasn’t always had the easiest time in the dating pool and she’s not the most liked person in her community after a few failed social engagements. When she rescues new to town, Caleigh after a flat tyre, it’s obvious they have a deep attraction. As they get to know one another, they can’t seem to get enough of each other and they fall fast but fall deep. When you look up soul mates in the dictionary it should have a picture of these two. They have the same interests and the same warped sense of humour.

This was a lovely story with little relationship build up which actually suited the mood I was in when I started reading it. I love the comedy that Robin writes into her books and at times it’s almost a slapstick show.

Blaze and Caleigh are fantastic and the story itself of them falling in love is just adorable but there is a second story running alongside them about Caleigh’s mum, who has just came back to town after apparently abandoning Caleigh and her sister when they were little. She is currently staying with Blaze while she recovers from her injury but it’s clear she’s there for other reasons. I reckon her story was one of my favourite parts of the book.

Caleigh was without a doubt my favourite character. She really stood out from the rest and the moments with her grandparents, especially her grandad, were hilarious. I was almost falling off my seat laughing.

Another engaging, fun and sweet romance from the pen of Robin Alexander.

Well, this was just another funny and delightful read by Robin Alexander!

Caleigh Breaux has just relocated to her grandparent’s town in Southern Louisiana after taking a job at a local company. After her previous job required constant travel and made a relationship impossible, she is ready to grow some roots and meet someone special. She meets Blaze Sonnier literally on her way to town as her car gets a flat tire and Blaze stops to help. There is some immediate chemistry but they part ways with no plans to see each other. What follows is a funny story about love, family, the town and making amends...with some romance in there too.

Blaze’s character is by far my favorite. She is, how can I say this, misunderstood. Her life seems to be a constant stream of hilarious events that have been twisted and blown out of proportion by the townspeople. Caleigh is also a likable character with her own silly situations. Likewise, Blaze’s sister going through menopause was both comical and scary.

The story does not have much serious conflict other than Blaze’s estranged mother returning to town after abandoning her daughters when they were very young. Even that topic is managed with the usual Alexander humor. I have to say, it was well done and made me even like that character, when otherwise I would be quick to dismiss it. Otherwise the relationship part was very straightforward, not that I find that to be a problem as they were a sweet couple.

Overall a relaxing and funny read that will entertain every lesfic fan out there. 4 stars

I like the Robin Alexander and Lori Prince combination, it’s always funny.

This one just didn’t really work for me. Prince’s narrating is top notch again, but the book is just a bit too much for me. It’s just a little too over the top. And the couple moves incredibly fast, I don’t necessarily like that. I don’t mind it much either, but it’s all just a bit too much in this book.

This book was like Gilmore Girls on speed. I found the humour charming at first, but it quickly became overwhelming because everyone.....EVERYONE.....is a wise-ass. Even some random guy from the factory who comes into play once couldn't have lines without a wise-crack in it. My head was reeling trying to take in all the dialogue and I had to start skimming parts. Maybe it's because I'm sick, I dunno, but it was not a hard one to put down.

I did like how assertive Caleigh was when she met and pursued Blaze, being open about her feelings, and they did mesh together well. Their relationship was different than in other lesfics, and was all based on humour really, as Blaze couldn't seem to talk about her emotions at all. There's somewhat of an intimate scene, but it's unlike anything you will ever read in a lesfic. I give it a 2.5 stars.

It's my first book from Robin Alexander and I'm definetely going to check on her other works.

It was soooo funny ^^. The dialog are as screwed as the characters and they go on flawlessly (the dialog, not the characters).
Probably too fluid to be realistic but it's just the way the story is, burlesque and endearing.

The cast is composed of the two main and some of their own screwy but loving family-members, mostly : doting gramp and gram, crazy-menopausal or more like menopausal-crazied sister, long-estranged-actress-mom, and cute bad-ass-preteen.

It was really fun and made me smile all day long so I rounded it up to 4 stars, even if the love/relationship is kinda of insta, the end conventionnal and some drama a bit easy.

My days needed a bit of laugh and here it was, served on my Kindle ^^

Alrighty, let's get this out there right away. I enjoyed this book but it definitely felt different from other Robin Alexander stories that I've read. I've come to expect alot of laughter on my part while reading. That was not the case until about the 80% mark and then there were quite a few sections of dialogue that made me laugh out loud. Oddly enough, that wasn't a bad thing. The story itself moved along at a good pace and the characters were interesting. I enjoyed the dynamics between Blaze and her sister and how they coped with the return of their mom. I'll also say that my usual reaction to the instant "you rock my world" trope between Blaze and Caleigh would annoy the crap out of me. Somehow I was completely unphased. I attribute it to all the other interactions between the main and supporting characters.
Overall, a nice easy read.

I cannot tell you how many times I've cackled along with the characters in this book. Took me no time to finish this, it was so enjoyable. I always love the craziness that Alexander brings to her stories, endearing kind of craziness. There's an ease I get reading her work, the humour seems effortless, not those try too hard, the kind of intimate humour you share with someone you know well. I think this is the first of hers i've read that doesn't involve an older senile character that butts in and creates chaos at all time, but yet still have that fun and crazy vibe to it. And I love it.
I will never see menopause the same way again! Oh the shenanigans the sisters get into!
Another great read and I'm a happy reader :)

Simply another great story from Ms Alexander. I could go on and on about the main characters, Blaze Sonnier and Caleigh Breaux and I could also go on and on about the supporting cast but for anyone who has ever read any of the works offered by Ms Alexander you can rest assured each and every character is uniquely entertaining. Having read all of Ms Alexanders works (and there are more than a few) I would have to rate this book in her top five. Laugh out loud, touching story. Wonderful read.

Read the “ About This Book” for the premise.

This isn’t my favorite Alexander book but it was Ok. I love all the rest of her books, and I’ve read many two and three times. This seemed a little forced, but I’ll buy the next one without looking because I’m a true fan. If you only read one of her books read “Summer of Our Discontent”, it’s funny and heart warming.
