Lovin' the Coven #5

Fifth Essence

Rate this book
Want to know my secret? Probably not as much as I do.

It seems like everybody knows what the hell I am but me.

Apparently, I'm only half the witch I thought I was. Literally. I'd spent my entire life thinking my father was a witch like my mother. I should have known better. Nobody could be that big of a witch. Now, to figure out who and what he is, I get to travel the known realms in search of answers. Unfortunately, sometimes ignorance truly is bliss.

Answers are never easy, especially when the entire universe is working against you. The angels want to stop me, my mother loves to play stupid (it's a natural talent in this family), and the ones who do want to help me end up passing out whenever they try to clue me in. It's driving me insane. Insane to the point of becoming a jealous, sarcastic, obnoxious pain in the ass. Okay, maybe that's just normal me, but the secrets aren't helping any, either.

But now I have goals, and goals are good. Find my elf and find my father. A witch has to start somewhere, and maybe if I find them, I'll find me.

Fifth Essence is an adult novel intended for mature audiences only. It contains graphic language and sexual situations. 18+ readers only! This is a medium burn reverse harem where the girl gets all the guys. Why Choose?

****3.5****

This was, I think, my least favorite of the series. Couple reasons.

First, Dot had some moments of real bitchery in this book. She's become jealous (to the point where she immediately leaps forward with shitty reactions and actions, without a moment of thought), hypocritcal, condescending, and she's trending towards Anita Blake territory in several ways, including the Magic Vagina that draws all men. I'm hoping, though, that these new shitty flaws aren't going to continue on - she seemed to have some growth on this too. So fingers crossed.

Second, it feels like each book climaxes with a fight wherein Dot leaves her coven behind and/or sends them to safety. They honestly seem like non-characters in the series now, getting so little page time because she only ever goes into bad situations with her familiars and maybe Shea.

But I liked the development of backstory in this book (though I'm worried about Mary Sue-ism, particularly since she already has tendencies because of the Magic Vagina), and I can't wait to meet her dad. So I enjoyed it. Just not as much as some of the previous books.

Bit slow and must we cliffhanger?

This one was a bit slow. I thought we were ramping things up and they slowed dramatically. Everything seemed to take longer and everyone was talking in circles. Things turned out fine. Except at the end, like this honestly seems stupid. This ending leading into the next book.

But there is something to be said about this cast of characters that keeps me coming back despite my issues with the books.

This is why most of the books have received three stars from me. Because of things like why Jimmy was let go. He just says he was let go, but no reason why. I don't understand. Things like this happen in most of the series. Hanging issues. But I still like it, so I may continue listing if I can get the last two audiobooks from my library or Scribd.

Eagerly awaiting more... I’m an addict now

This series is one of the best I’ve read in a very long time. There are not disappointing “place-holder” books within this series. The characters are flawed but fabulous, witty, funny and still manage to get you in the feels.

These books contain some f/f content, m/m content and very very hot reverse harem steamy scenes.

The series is incredible and you never know where it is going. Cannot wait for the next one.

I really love this series! In this book we learn about Dot’s father, who and what he is, and what that means for Dot. There’s another trip to Faerie and a battle with celestial beings. Can’t wait to read what happens next!

Just like in previous book of this series I was unhappy with the balance between the members of the harem. It felt like she had meaningful conversations only with 'candidates' to her harem, whereas actual members where used only for sex, if that. Also the only requirement to be a member is a nice ass. Character does not really come into play. This was prominent not only inthis book but I suppose I got fed up. Do not get me wrong, this is a great series and I love the humor in it but relationship wise it lacks quite a lot.

I've been loving this series so far. It was totally different from what I thought it would be.

Pros: LOVE the storyline so far. Dot is great. Her men are loving and her harem is growing! Love the different 'familiars' type thing.

Cons: I miss characters from the beginning of the book. They don't travel together as a group so we don't get as much of the main crew as before. Kind of sucks since I miss Chief and Jimmy but it's also good since we get to meet the new members. I just wish we had more time with the OG crew.

Overall: 4/5

Fifth Essence was alright. For a book that's revealing about Dot's powers, the information was thrown out in a haphazard manner with everyone being tightlipped until they weren't.

The book starts off right away establishing what's the agenda for the plot but the build up towards that agenda is wobbly and not taken so seriously. It's obviously getting lost in the whole mystery about Dot's powers. The way it's told is also abrupt. The dark elves weren't really utilised as much as I was expecting with them being focal players in this book. Obviously towards the end, there is interaction with the dark elves but just like the previous one visiting the Faerie realm, this one gives the same unattached feeling.

The romance part of the relationship has majorly moved towards ensuring the sex scenes gets priority. There is plenty of humping action with the guys but I kinda wished there were more interactive scenes, the author can give smooth flowing dialogues without any cringe unlike some of the other RH books out there so I really wanted to see more of that. Dot has become uber special snowflake character with all of the various powers that's cropped up with each book so it was nice to see her be imperfect messing up in her relationships at least.

If by the end, nothing of substance was revealed I would have been annoyed but the things revealed do put a nice twist on Dot's story and creates opportunity for more content. Despite the rating, this series is very consistent in giving a pleasant reading session.

This book was kind of my least favorite of the series so far.

Did it still have the banter and funny and pervy moments? Yes.

Do I still love the harem, familiars, Josie and Candace? Yes.

Did we have more batty family moments? Yes.

Did I finally learned WHO SHE IS?! YESSSS!!! HALELUYA!!!!

Did it have a plot and villain? Sort of.....? And that's the main problem.

The book started even more abruptly than how the previous one ended. I even had to stop reading and go back to the last page of the previous book to see if I somehow missed something cause I honestly was totally lost and by the end I still didn't know how exactly it was that Jaerden was kidnapped (which is the incident the plot revolved around). I mean the books on this series always end in a sort of cliffhanger but the next book always starts where the other ended! That is not what happened here.

At the end of the previous book, Dot and the gang return from Fairie and it ends with her explaining what happened with her and how she got the necklace the goddess told her she needed. And when she is telling her story, it is to her WHOLE gang, including Jaerden! So how is it that THIS book begins with Dot DEMANDING that Delron bring back Jaerden from the Dark Fae court?! How could he have gotten kidnapped while Dot was in Fairie?! She once sort of says it happened because when he got back home with Shae, Candance and Yuki, he supposedly decided to go look for Dot in Fairie on his own but at the end of book 4, Jaerden was in the house with ALL OF THEM! I mean, Dot even tells him that she killed his brother but that his sister was fine. SO HOW DID HE GET KIDNAPPED?!

Also, Dot mentioned Glabrielle to several people through the book but no one thought anything of it until Ellelyn questioned it? Seriously?! Add to that, the whole Delron bussiness, that it was never really specified why Jimmy got fired (it was just because Dot healed his back?!), the weird fight with the queen, and that apparently having a hot and heavy make out session with Ellelyn supposedly fixed the Dark Fae realm. (Uh?!). It was all too inconsistent and sort of confusing.

I was also disappointed with the stupid fights that Dot had with Dar and Jimmy and then Josie and Candace, its just that to me they didn't really add to the story and instead, I would have actually like to have read even a small interaction with the other coven members that have barely even been mentioned in previous books.

I am happy that they explained a bit more about ceratin lores and myths and that we have some answers like about Dot's dad and a bit more of her powers and what exactly was the Fourth Rite that Dar performed in the 4th book and why the gods are helping Dot and what not, but I honestly felt like this book never found it's footing and seriously, WHAT WAS WITH THAT ENDING?!

‘Fifth Essence’ is the latest installment of an amazing tale of adventure in the life of Dot, the heroine, and the people she loves. Right from the first book, you are immersed in her world. There is a considerable amount of action, accompanied by great character building, particularly with those people Dot chooses to call her own—be they human, witch, or a great many other species’. Each book adds on and builds up the ever expanding number of characters, as they go through an amazing array of wholly unexpected obstacles.

This series truly is an epic saga. What starts out as a light adventure in the first book, rapidly evolves to something much more intense and dramatic. Many, many other series’ that I’ve read become too intense at this point, and are no longer a pleasure to read. What makes Jacquelyn Faye’s books so different is her masterful ability to bring together an action packed story with filled with life-threatening and often mind boggling events, while keeping the tone light with snarky humor and sexy interludes. Her books have so many unpredictable twists and turns, and with each event, her character building brings them and the story to life. As the storyline progresses, and new characters are brought into Dot’s sphere of influence, they interact with each other in unexpected ways, adding to the complexity of the developing storyline.

The latest book, Fifth Essence, while answering many of the questions about who Dot is and what makes her special, each answer brings more mysteries and tasks yet unsolved. There are so many plots and subplots going on with a wide array of characters—many of whom have hidden agendas or mutable objectives. However, Dot takes everything head on, with the help of friends, family, and admirers, insisting throughout that she is simply Dot, no matter how much she achieves or discovers about her family secrets. The tone of the book still remains light, even though the characters are greatly taxed with the never ending and seemingly insurmountable obstacles. However, there is always time for snarky humor, especially when things look bleak. Dot is always up for any task and protects the ever-expanding group that she calls hers. Of course, she is also always up for the increasingly exploratory sexy interludes.

Who is Dot?

We are delving back into the Fae world once again, and things are never what they seem. This book also has a similar feel to the last one, with the whole going on a mission to Fae to get more answers.
So first things first I will address how things are going with the guys. I like all the relationships so far, and I especially like Dar, I’m sorry but he is quickly becoming my favorite, also I like Shea as well, and I get the feeling Dar and Shea are going to be liking each other a whole lot in the future. My main complaint here is that it seems like all the guy characters, and even some of the girl seem to be spending a lot of time crying, like a lot. Every time something happens its always made a point that this and that character are holding each other while crying, it’s getting a little old and repetitive and honestly these people need to buck up.
In terms of storyline, I like that Dot went back into the Fae realm to seek out Jaeron, I mean she feels an obligation to him and went back for him like she would for anyone else. This new court was interesting, there was a lot going on that’s for sure, and the Queen who rules over there, well creepy would be a good descriptor. I think the best thing that came out of this trip is that Dot is finally given a much more clear view of who and what her dad is, and because she has taken up her fathers power, what she is going to become. It’s definitely going to make things more interesting for Dot as time goes on, and probably for the citizens of Cedar Falls too.
Speaking of Cedar Falls, things do get awfully interesting, and like always Chief steps in it all over again, and honestly this time it felt a whole lot more like betrayal than any of the other times before. I am very interested to see how this all turns out especially since it seems like someone has it out for Dot in Cedar Falls.

Good
Steady world-building continues; the various planes and races' origins are fleshed out further.
Best explanation I have read differentiating between angels and demons
Descriptions continue to be well-done without overpowering the story.
Characters continue to be entertaining. Especially love Jimmy and Nana!
Love the main female character. Sex positive, doesn't take shit from anyone and is a great blend of earth mother, warrior and very human screw-up.
Love that she used her brain and came up with ways to apply new powers to escape or vanquish enemies.
A strong independent female character is introduced. (And it was hilarious!)
Interesting plot twists.
Smut continues to rock!
Humor continues to rock!

Neutral
Cannot read as a stand alone.

Bad
Later male character additions are not being fleshed out. At all.
Use of the words 'adorable' and 'blush' have now reached critical levels and the word 'shy' is moving up the charts behind them.
The Josie/Candace/Yuki drama came off as forced and lacked a point.
Not happy at how the female non-heteronormative characters continue to be infantilized.
Really not liking the forced love thru magical bonds thing. Makes it all fake.
Really not happy with the addition of another witch to the harem as he brought nothing new to the table nor was he fleshed out enough to be unique or entertaining (or even memorable) in of himself.
Small pick: Really? All that magic and no one can glamour Dar's ears? Or find him an sexually attractive human rapist to eat?

Not as fun as the first four but still enjoyable.

Another action packed addition to Dot’s story!

I absolutely love this series. Each book has been a rollercoaster ride of drama! Just like all the other books, we meet new characters, explore another realm, added a member to Dot’s harem, but we finally have more information about what exactly Dot is, which is not just a simple witch.

I am so happy Dar has finally been included into the mix. I loved him from the beginning! So we now have Chief, Jimmy, Jason, Shea, and Dar in the harem with a few potentials still left with the dark elf prince, the other elf prince, and Dennis. That MM scene with Shea was hot!!! I have read books before where it seemed as if the MM relationships were separated from the female lead character or didn’t revolve around the female which is kind of a let down for me. The author has done this perfectly for me since Dot has been involved in all the MM scenes and still ultimately revolves around her.

Dot kind of irritated me a few times in this book. She seemed to develop a spoiled attitude at times where it appeared as if she was only concerned about herself rather than the big picture. Those moments led to some hiccups with her relationships with certain people until she realized her mistakes. I’m glad she was able to recognize her errors and make it up them.

Only 2 books left and I cannot wait to see what ultimately happens with Dot and her ever growing coven of witches and her harem of delicious men!

Oh my twinkly stars! I love this book. I love the whole series. This fifth installment in the Lovin' the Coven series is amazingly funny, wonderfully faced-paced, and tantalizingly sexy. I love the banter between Dot and her friends. There are so many HILARIOUS exchanges and one-liners.

This time, Dot deals with an existential crisis. Some people know who she really is, but they can’t tell her. Then there’s the remote control toy, an arrest, angels, the dark elves, and another road trip to the faerie realm. There’s still plenty of fun times to break up the serious stuff, but things are getting more intense.

I also enjoy the cast of supporting characters and the town of Cedar Falls. Herb and Marge are funny and kind. Jimmy is a little pervy, but he helps Dot with so many things. Bill is surprisingly funny and unexpectedly romantic. Candace is adorable, of course, but she's also an important person. (Never underestimate somebody just because they're short!) Josie is the best friend who makes Dot laugh. New characters are added, like Elleslyn, and I want to know more about them.

There are a lot of typos. It's a little distracting at times. I hope Lady Faye has this proof-read before making a box set.

Just when you think it can’t get better...

Or freakier (spider butts and vibrating butt stuffs), the author vaults the book to the next level. Five solid books in, I thought I’d be getting sick of the characters and the storyline going drab. Nope. We have new princes and handcuffs and admission into the heart of darkness. More men than you can shake a big stick at, and gloriously quirky Dot. She was annoying me early on in this book, but realized the error of her ways. She’s still unapologetically Dot, but when managing 4, no 7? (Mathing is hard) love interests, she’s bound to make a few mistakes. Cant wait for the next book in the series!

Okay. How do I unpack all of that????

Let me start by saying that I really enjoyed this book as I have all of the books so far in the series.

That being said: a lot happened. I think her harem has doubled if I'm keeping correct track and the drama and struggles she faces multiply every page it seems.

My biggest complaint would have to be the consistent 'left wanting' feeling I get at the end of each book. Like, she already has a laundry list of things to accomplish and complete before the end of the series yet at the end of the book additional drama ensues that will no doubt tie her up for half of the next book.

Wow, I loved this instalment, for those of us who've been following the series finally the answer we've all been waiting for,'who is Dot's father?' The whole series has been building to this, and what a surprise, sorry no spoilers, you just have to dive in to find out, just hold on tight its a wild ride! I was hanging on every word and loving every minute, Melissa's wonderful narration just added to the enjoyment, I can't wait to start the next book. I received this book in exchange for my honest review.

Good Read

Fifth Essence continues Dot’s story and sees her discovering more about her father and on the hunt to find out what has happened to her kidnapped elf. I enjoyed the story and the developments in this book. I am looking forward to seeing how everything plays out now seeing as this book had a few revelations. Also, I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book in regards to the minor cliffhanger at the end of this book. Overall, another good book that I enjoyed reading and I would recommend.

Bookhangover here I come. Damn, I wish the next book was already out. I'm addicted to this series. I laughed and nearly went up in flames from the hotness. I loved this book and it's definitely on my to reread list.

Dot and her guys keep getting in bigger and bigger messes. Dot's dad is a big mystery and leads her all around.

I highly recommend you check out this amazing series. You won't regret it.

Complex read

It was to much, less is more especially when there are so many established characters in the story already. then we add all these random realms and characters who don’t matter, just wanted to see how the relationships develop and evolve into something more. This story was confusing most of the time and we didn’t get to hear from the guys in this book and it was a frustrating read until the very end.

I love the humor in this series!

Oh man that ending!!! Just when things were getting pretty interesting a wrench gets thrown in. This series is still going strong with new twists and turns.
There are a few new characters that I hope stick around!
I've gotten a bit used to having a bonus chapter. I totally assumed we would have had one from shea's perspective. You know the chapter I'm talking about!!

I am now obssessed with this author, after discovering her a week ago i have now devoured all her released books, and this series was WOW!

Full of humour, twists, Steam, action and adventure. With a Kicka** FMC who is strong, loyal, brave and slightly reckless.
With an ever expanding group of Loyal loving Men and awsome friends, even the side characters are full of life and humor.

I would highly recommend this series to anyone looking for PNR RH series, with great world building and all the feels.

I like the humor of the series, but I didn't like how Dot seemed to be a hypocrite. So much jealousy and insecurity in this book despite picking up more lovers every other chapter. Previously she was giving Chief grief about the pain his jealously caused with his attitude, but turned around and did something even worse. Yet when she hurt Jimmy she didn't learn her lesson & was ready to act out again when assuming someone might be interested in Chief.
