The first inside look at how sex workers use webcams to make a living

The erotic webcam industry, also known as “camming,” is a thriving global business. Angela Jones takes readers inside this multi-billion dollar industry, revealing how its workers experience intimacy, community, empowerment―and, as she compellingly argues, pleasure.

Drawing on in-depth interviews, survey data, web analytics, and more, Jones highlights not only the dangers, but also the rewards, of working in one of the most taboo corners of the Internet. She provides an inside look at the public and private shows between cam models and their customers, from exotic dancing and pornographic videos, to masturbation shows and erotic chatrooms.

A fascinating, much-needed glimpse into the lives of cam models, Camming takes us behind the webcam lens to experience the power of erotic labor in the twenty-first century.

** Read for my 2021 gender and sexuality comprehensive exams **

I honestly think that the adoption of the term/concept of empowerment and the greater push towards individuality have been some of the most backwards steps taken within the feminist movement.

Mỹ God! I can see why this won ăn ASA award. It covers so much about the camming industry. It talks about embodied authenticity or thể emotional labor thể cảm models will put in to seem like a real person. They talk about trolls who will continually attempt to jeopardize the safety of these models. It talks about the stigma of being a sex worker and the need for boundaries to avoid injury during sex acts. The camming world seems to act as a social safety net for a lot of women who have trouble staying employed in traditional work, whether it be because of disability or something else. It provides thêm flexibility with their time, sợ that they can spend more time with their family. As a trade off, they must put on a Manufactured invisible identity of being young, bisexual and single, since that is what sells. Also, it really helps to be a young white girl from America, since they take in the most money. Black women đó not do sợ well ơn camming websites, since they are seen more as a fetish than anything else. There is Degrade play in the porn space, but since the performers are in control of the situation and context, it changes the dynamics of what is done, especially since aftercare is a huge part of what happens off screen to maintain the performers’ mental healthier afterwards.
