This is book two of the Lt. Gazzara Novel series, which follows Kate Gazzara in her job as a police detective in the robbery/homicide department. This series follows on from the Harry Starke series. Harry was Kate’s mentor on the police force until he retired and became a P.I. Kate and Harry were more than close and she is trying to keep her relationship with him professional and stay away from relying on him too much. But her new case and trouble with her boss, make this difficult.
The book starts with the murder of a young woman, who was dumped in the mud and brutally stabbed over forty times. The case was never solved at the time and twenty odd years later, Kate picks up the case whilst in the basement, near the morgue, trying to avoid her boss, Finkle, seeing her come in to work. Finkle is a short, overweight and lecherous man, who is unfortunately out to get her for some reason. Kate is also being investigated by Internal Affairs for a supposed brutality/excessive force charge against her. When he catches her by the morgue, he tells her to get all her cases up to date and give him a full report on each by the end of the day – including the case in her hand!
That case is the one the book started with, a cold case murder from 1992, of a young woman called Cassandra Smart. Someone whose life was cut tragically short, for no apparent reason, in a brutal attack. Finkle nit-picks over her reports and passes onto her main boss how someone else had to look over and correct them all, to show how badly she is doing. Add in the sudden onset of a horrendous cold and Kate struggles to complete all her work. She and her current partner, Lonny, have to re-investigate the cold case and also try to solve some of their other cases. They line up a load of interviews and end up with more suspects than they ever thought. But one interview in particular causes harassment charges against Kate and more attention from Finkle.
Due to that complaint, Finkle passes the case onto another team and takes all the credit for the work done so far. Kate still keeps on looking for who was responsible and ends up being attacked for her troubles. The case does get solved in the end, but you won’t be able to guess who did it, as the author is superb at working all the twists and surprises to gain your interest and make you keep on reading. Another great story in this new off shoot series. Kate is a worthy main character and has a lot of Harry’s stubborn traits when approaching and tackling a case. She is a worthy opponent in her fight against crime and also against the prejudice of some still in the police force, such as Finkle!
A great read, that I just had to read right through to find out who was actually responsible and also what was going to happen to Kate. Was she going to be forced out by Finkle or take up Harry’s offer and leave to work with him? Never a simple murder case, when this writer gets their hands on it and uses a storyline to mystify readers with. I thoroughly enjoyed it, even though I had read one of the latter books first and the timeline is completely different in this book, due to the cold case. As always, any and all readers will enjoy this story and also Kate’s character and the links to Harry. Can’t wait to read the rest of the series. I received an ARC copy of this book from the author and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
