Wojny kozackie
Książka nawiązująca do wydanej w 1999 r. i niedawno wznowionej "Kozaczyzny", pióra tego samego autora. W pewnym sensie stanowi jej kontynuację. Pokazuje barwną panoramę największego powstania pod wodzą charyzmatycznego hetmana Bohdana Chmielnickiego oraz wojny polsko-ukraińskiej.
Losy wojny toczyły się na polach bitewnych, ale także w gabinetach dyplomatycznych Krymu, Stambułu, Moskwy czy Paryża. Na rozstrzygnięcie walk z zapartym tchem czekała cała Europa. Kozacy w sojuszu z Tatarami i Turcją stanowili bowiem olbrzymie zagrożenie. Nic więc dziwnego, że w wielu kościołach w Europie odprawiano msze za powodzenie polskiego oręża. Błyskotliwe zwycięstwo armii pod wodzą Jana Kazimierza przyjęto z euforią, a króla sławiono w dziesiątkach wierszy i epigramów.

Moving past fiction – a deep dive into the Cossack Wars
I never knew much about this specific chapter of Polish history. However, after recently reading Henryk Sienkiewicz’s classic With Fire and Sword (Ogniem i mieczem) for the first time, I was completely blown away by how engaging that adventure story was. Wanting to separate historical fiction from reality, Wojny Kozackie (The Cossack Wars) by Romuald Romański was my attempt to delve deeper into the origins of the Khmelnytsky Uprising, the Cossack Revolution, and the reactions (or lack thereof) of the Polish and Lithuanian szlachta (nobility) to the dramatic events unfolding on the eastern borderlands of the Commonwealth.
Romański’s book provides excellent context for non-historians. Instead of drowning the reader in dry dates, he builds a cohesive narrative that actually left me with a hunger for more information about the region, the conflict, and its key stakeholders.
What I appreciated the most was the author’s objective tone. He manages not to side with any party in the conflict. Instead, he balanced the narrative by pointing out the strategic mistakes, pride, and failures of each side.
This was a gripping, educational read that beautifully fills the gaps left by fiction. It’s a solid 4/5 stars for me, and it has definitely sparked a lasting interest in the history of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

Цікава книжка про початок повстання Богдана Хмельницького та про перебіг перших битв польсько-української війни (Жовті Води, Корсунь, Пилявці). Автор аналізує причини повстання, об'єктивно оцінює успіхи козацько-татарського війська та невдачі польського війська.
