The Immortal Brotherhood #2

A Discovery of Faeries

Rate this book
When Noah Mason’s boss ventures into Faerieland and doesn’t return, he figures he ought to get her back before apocalyptic chaos reigns.

Lady Arabella is the only person on earth who can open and shut doorways to the mythical land of magic and terror, and if her power falls into the wrong hands, everyone’s screwed.

But, he’s not going alone.

The raven-haired Raina Black with her powerful Seer Stone is by his side, joined by Chinonso the Reaper and Thomas the Time Traveler. Unfortunately, they all must tolerate Raina’s double-crossing sister Trixie, as well.  After her brush with dark magic, they don’t trust her to be left alone, and her gift with sorcery may come in handy.

In this second installment, the Immortal Brotherhood faces down otherworldly creatures, trying not to bring on the wrath of the Faerie Queen, while also outmaneuvering  a secret society seeking to possess powers never meant for men. Throw into the mix a bloodthirsty serial killer with dangerous magic at his command, and the Brotherhood has their work cut out for them.

This is an immediate sequel to The Immortals (The Immortal Brotherhood Book 1) and should not be read before it.
The  story starts immediately where the previous book left off, and unlike the first book, the beginning is slightly slower, as the characters are re-grouping, re-organising and planning future actions. The writing is so beautifully consistent, it feels like the books were published at the same time and not over a year apart. The authors paid a lot of attention to achieving the same atmosphere, the same nuances in character behavior, and inter-character dynamics. The only difference is the world, as it was clear from the ending of the previous book, the story moves to another realm.
The initial uneasy peace does not last long and the pace picks up and rivals the previous book, but with more magic and fantastical creatures. The chase for the artifact becomes secondary to solving some more personal issues, namely saving friends, running for their lives, and adhering to Faerie Court politics. And the pace is even faster then the previous book. And even more happens. I didn't think I could enjoy the series more, but wow, this was a great book and I can't wait for the next one.
The ending is not really a cliffhanger but it is clear that so much more is coming, because as much as numerous issues got resolved, there are still many questions to be answered. The complex family relationships are resolving as well, with some answers being quite shocking, but completely logical. The romance part is little more pronounced, but not overtaking the story.
Some of the more mysterious characters, are becoming even more mysterious, or I should say their actions become more puzzling, and Raina's feelings for them crystalise, which might be a problem for their relationship later, because I doubt that she will do as she will be expected from them. And after two books, I can say with certainty that Trixie rocks and she is my favourite character. This is an amazing series and I will be anticipating the next book. Can't wait to see what happens next.

This is the second book in this series. Raina and the Brotherhood are trying to find a locksmith to make a key. But this is a special key to open the pathway to Land of the Faeries. Only the Key Master can make such a key and there is only one left. Trixie swears she knows where he can be found but there are hurtles to pass over. Now Thomas enters the picture as he is the resident scientist, time traveler. He can open portals for quick transport, and time, as always is of the essence.

As you can imagine they find the Key Master, find the lost way and enter Faerieland. These are not the fairies of our world. The creatures in this land are mean, grotesque and not helpful at all. They make it to the Faerie castle, but their welcome is a bit uncertain. They must help stop the Unseelie invasion that is on the way. To do this, they must travel to a small town far to the North and rid the world of the evil demon controlling the Unseelie. If they can protect the Seelie lands and people, the Queen will help cure Trixie of her cancer.

Again, nothing is as it seems. The trip North with its perils and the creatures they encounter almost make them lose heart. But they pull together and return to the palace in time to leave that world to its war. Safely back in London, the story twists again. Looks like I’ll have to watch for book 3.

Lady Arabella, the only person left who could safely protect the ways between realms, had crossed over and disappeared. Now Noah, Thomas, Raina, Cinonso and Trixie were going to venture into Faerieland to bring her back. The Lady was after all the head of the Immortal Brotherhood to which they all belonged, except for Raina's evil sister Trixie, who they had to take with them to keep an eye on if nothing else. Once they enter Faerieland they encounter many creatures and have to do battle with more than the Servi Mortis they usually battle with in the home realm. Members of the group crossed over into the faerie realm too and the Ripper had escaped. This was a very gripping read from start to finish making it even more intriguing because of the magical ambience it was mainly set into, that of the realm of Faery. The world building is beautiful, and the characters encountered strong, loyal and very courageous. Learning how to harness her magical powers through the seer stone aided Raina no end during battles which were fought, and I am sure will continue doing so in the future which is far from plain sailing for our group, even though some battles have been won!

I was so excited to finally continue Raina Black's story and was definitely not disappointed. The plot was well thought out, the action appropriately paced and the world of Faireland, a new and wonderfully detailed place to imagine.

Ms. Escobar has also done another wonderful job at bringing to life Raina and the other characters. The personalities shine, both with new characters and returning ones, and my new favorite is probably Thomas. His desire to help by traveling, despite always putting himself in danger mentally, make him the glue that holds everyone together on multiple occasions. His loyality to Roelen and her situation, despite her treatment of him and his friends, is the stuff good people are made of. He is just a well written character.

A Discovery of Fairies is an overall great new addition to The Immortal Brotherhood world. I look forward to the next installation and the next adventure in store for Raina.

In full disclosure, I received a free copy from the author.

As an introduction to this series, book 1 does an amazing job.

Though the 1st chapter is a little confusing, the characters and their quest becomes clear very quickly.

Unlike other books, this does not start with an introduction of its main chracters rather from a point which describes the aftermath of a big incident.

The faery world described is also unlike each other. With a plathora of different paranormals, some known and some unknown, this book is a treat to every paranormal lover.

With book 1 being so amazing i can't wait for book 2 to come out.

I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review.  We are now adventuring in the land of the Faerie. Noah's boss have vanished into the that world and she is the only that seems to have the abilities to open portals between the worlds. Noah with the help of Raina and crew are going to find away to bring her home. I enjoyed this book and the description was done very well. There were times I could not help but laugh out loud. I am going to have to fine more by this author.

A fantastic addition to the series! This one kept me on the edge of my seat. I loved the new magic and the dangers and excitement of the Faeries. I enjoyed learning more about the characters as well. By far Thomas fascinates me the most his story is so intriguing so it was great to learn more about him.

We dive right back into the series where book one leaves off. Honestly if you haven’t read book one please stop reading this and go grab it. Alesha Escobar knows how to pull a reader into a land of magic, good, evil, and bizarre. Well developed characters and action to keep you enthralled to the end.

Wow and I thought the first one was good , this time we have Noah looking for his boss and needing Raina, and Chinonso a reaper and Thomas a time travelers help while trying not to make the Fairies mad.
This one has just as much action as the first and the storyline made me not want it to end .
