This is a fascinating and surprising adventure. Visually written in a style thats like reading a movie. Once the world is established, the characters, though on a physical journey, take you deeper into a journey of spirit. I felt the struggle and hope for humanity and the possibility that if we can reach and raise our collective consciousness we may be able to pull ourselves out if the mire of hate and greed we are spiraling into and get our powers back. Love Kyla the best.
I really enjoyed this story! I think I would give it a little more than 4 stars, maybe 4.25. This book had such wonderful characters. They were fleshed out and so descriptive. They were likable and relatable. I loved the relationship between Lazer and his mom. They were both so supportive and loving. The idea of the splicers was so fun and dangerous and imaginative. I enjoyed how some had mostly human looks and some looked more like animals, and how some were between only animals. I am torn between liking and not liking the fact that there were a lot of different people the chapters were based on. A lot of them were based on Lazer, but some were based on his mom, or Covax, or Five, or Aleece. It was kind of hard for me personally to go from one character to another so many times. On the other hand, I think it lent a lot to the story, because with Lazer being the main character, there was a lot going on that he was not a part of that needed to be told. The only thing that brought this rating down for me was that at some points this felt like a wonderful story, and and at some points it felt like a scientific description. Those parts kind of lost me because the chapter before, I was reading about Lazer and his friends, and the next entire chapter was a very detailed scientific description of one specific thing, which could get kind of confusing. I partly think that may be what the author wanted to do, because this is kind of a dystopian world and how that happened needed to be described so the reader would understand the world better. I think this series will only get better, now that a lot of the world/character building has been laid out in this book. It was an awesome first book that is obviously leading to so much more with these characters. I can't wait to continue reading!
I enjoy books that reflect society in a way that makes you wonder about the future. That's what I found with The Atlantian. It is like holding up a mirror and seeing the world reflected back, but it is a future world, and though it is driven by the same motivators we have today, it is also filled with fear and ambition, love and jealousy, bravery and wisdom.
There are heroes in this world. Yes there are! And you will fall in love with them like I did.
The message of this book (so far, this is part of a series and oh boy am I hooked!!) is one of hope and triumph. Even if we're genetically altered, our humanity will shine through. A profound theme that helps me imagine a magnificent tomorrow.
