Angels and Sunshine #3

Often & Suddenly

Rate this book
Who will be the first to fall ? The uptight lawyer or the laid-back tattoo artist?

Dex: Happiness is overrated. Finding someone who has my back and takes care of me is optional, and Luke Gritt is not an option. The way I see it, he’s only a sexy complication.

Luke: One-night stand? No thanks. Friends-with-benefits relationship? Tricky, especially with an insanely hot, three-piece-suit man who lights up only around me. If opposites attract, Dex and I collide.

A friends-to-lovers m/m romance filled with angst, love, and forgiveness.

This story was really good. This is a new to me author, and I might read more. In all honesty the 2 MCS and brother and father are the only sane people in this story. Dex has a lot of so called friends, but they all read high maintenance and incredibly selfish to me. They only seem to remember him when they need something. I hated them all, honestly!! They all have their own books, but I have no interest in reading them now since this author did a great job of making them all assholes in this book. However, I loved the Dex and Luke. It was definitely a worthy read.

This was my first m/m romance and I was unsure about it! I loved Dex and Luke in the other two books and Gabrielle has a way of sucking you in to her stories so I read this and I was sooo happy I did!!! This is romance, yes but it is about so much more!! Struggles people go through, how they over come them, with friendship and love and it gave me all the feels!! This was great and I really enjoyed reading it!!!

𝕊𝕥𝕠𝕣𝕪𝕝𝕚𝕟𝕖: Dex can best be described as an uptight well-dressed asshole who considers himself more of a fixer than a high-powered celebrity lawyer. He spends most of his time worrying about his friends/family and finding ways to help them.

Where Dex is Armani suits and old money, Luke is a laidback tattoo artist raised on a farm. He’s the antithesis of what Dex typically looks for, but it certainly doesn’t stop his libido from kicking into high gear. And when Luke is the only one of his friends that remembers his birthday, Dex starts to maybe want more.

Can Dex hang up his high-stress bachelor lifestyle and settle into a long term loving relationship? Or will the hang ups from his past prove to be too much for Luke to help Dex overcome?

𝕊𝕖𝕩 𝕊𝕔𝕖𝕟𝕖𝕤: Holy. Cannoli. This was my first full length MM novel and it will NOT be my last. SO. GD. STEAMY. 💦 There’s some new-to-me vocabulary, but the description definitely provided some context clues! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 out of five! These scenes are SEXY. We get description! Frequency! And the connection between these two is HOT.

【$】: I received this as an ARC, but it’ll be FREE on KU!! Honestly, go for the purchase—you won’t regret it. The way Dex melts for Luke KILLS ME. *swoon* And alpha Luke is my FAVE.

As I’ve said before punctuation is the devil’s work. I use it incorrectly and often. Be warned. Read the blurb for details as what follows is purely a few of my thoughts and feelings about aspects of this book.

The group of friends in Often & Suddenly as a whole are self centred, self absorbed, selfish arseholes. Don’t think I’m the first reviewer to think that either. Dex I quite liked at the beginning until he became all self pity and woe is me he was meant to be depressed and stressed but it didn’t come across effectively. Word in your ear, Dex, if you think your friends are self involved users you are probably right and need to get new friends. I felt a bit sorry for him at first but an incident from his youth where we find out his actions had serious consequences changed my opinion of him considerably. There wasn’t much to redeem him to me after that and I couldn’t agree with his absolution for wrongdoing either.
Luke the other MC was a sweetheart and I loved him. His family were pretty awesome too and provided great relief from the general dickish behaviour of the so called friends. A shame they didn’t have more page time. The family that is. The epilogue didn’t really add anything other than to maybe set up a book for Asher(?) and provide an opportunity for Dex’s bestie to still act like a shithead five years later. Honestly by then I needed a timeout from it all. Other than that it was a bit of pointlessness and I was beyond done with it all by then.

I’m embarrassed to say it but for various reasons I spent most of this book in pained disbelief. It’s never happened to me before and frankly I hope it never does again. Perhaps I need to apologise to my family because it was not a pretty sight, trust me. In fact my husband commented more than once that I looked like a bulldog chewing a wasp (it was a toss up between a black eye or divorce papers the second time he opened his gob.) The teenager just cackled at me like witch. What can I say apparently I live with arseholes as well as read about them. Getting back to the point I don’t think I’ve ever read a book where most of the characters are just awful human beings each on a sliding scale of selfishness. I kept going thinking perhaps at least one, or all, would totally redeem themselves. They made small attempts here and there but nothing really stuck for any of them.

Apparently the group of friends all have their own books!?...Hang on while I wrestle my eyebrows back down my forehead at that little nugget 😲
Ok they are back in place. Truthfully I wouldn’t read about any of those people if wild horses dragged me to my Kindle and the bluebird of happiness gleefully told me that they were the last books on earth. If that were to happen I’d give up reading. You get the idea, right?

Anyway one word that sums this book up for me, HORRIBLE. And I’m sitting on my hands to stop me using more adjectives. I don’t try to be mean, just honest. The writing is pretty decent if a bit bald in places and considering the author isn’t a native English speaker she does a pretty good job. I just don’t like her characters here. Nor do I read much M/F stuff in general anymore. Therefore, I’m unlikely to read any of her other series. Reading preferences are different for all of us and at the end of the day opinions are subjective too. The author’s first forays(?) into M/M and M/M sexy times aren’t bad. I have certainly read a lot worse from authors who dip a toe into M/M pool for the first time. Shout-out for PornHub research. 😉

Final thoughts before I go. Luke needs to grab Asher and make a run for it back to his family farm. All the others need to get roles in an earthquake film or an instalment of Final Destination where they can all get offed in various gruesome and creative ways.

Now that I’d pay money for!

My rating is for writing quality and Luke only...

I love a good contemporary mm romance, and this one was so good.
You get a lot of amazing tropes in this book that I know a lot of you will love, and if it is your first time reading mm romance this is a soft book, so no hardcore "gayness" going on so this is a great book to start on.

There are some Friends to lovers going on in this book along with, Alpha man, One-night stand, opposite attracts and a lot of other things. The only thing I miss in this book is that the sexy time in this book isn't as graphic and is quickly jumped over when it happens, and that is sad because that is a lot of the background story for this men's relationship. But that makes it great for a first time mm reader, so there are pros and cons for it.

Dex is a man I should hate but fell in love with from the beginning. He is the brooding type, the tense man always there to point out your flaw and who will never small talk with you. He is distant and cold to everyone, but at the same time, he is the guy you want in your corner when everything is crumbling around you because you know he will be there and hold you up through it all. He will fix it.

But what made me give him my heart is how he is behind closed doors with Luke. Luke is the complete opposite of Dex. He is laid back, always looking at life in the most positive way he can, takes everything as it comes and is always ready with a smile. Plus he is a smoking hot tattoo artist (Yes can you imagine the tattoos!) so that makes him even more different from Dex that thinks tattoos are the worst you could ever get.

Put these two together, and you get a lot of sexual tension, angst, alpha vibes, and all the great feels. I was so happy that Dex found his match and was rooting for him all the way no matter what he did because his heart always drove him in some way.

Not my first read by author & I have read both Book 1 & 2 in the series, although this one is a M/M just so you know! I don’t get to read a lot of them so I get excited to, I like the different and so this was perfect for it.

When Dex finds himself alone at the bar on his 40th birthday which everyone seems to have forgotten, he wakes up feeling great aside from the hang-over but what happens next is crazy…he get’s to his office [yes he is the stuffy CEO dudes] and finds himself a cake that says: Don’t ignore me, I sucked your dick. Well, not having any recollection of what had happened last night, Dex panics.

Luke is well a big, tatted and bearded sexy man, who is CARE-FREE to opposite of Dex in all the ways! When Dex finds out about the cake, Luke has a little fun with him, and pushes his buttons. It’s a very interesting duo between these two, there is romance but it’s more of two grown adult alpha sexy men coming together, you know! There is jealousy, action, heartbreak and just LOT’S HAPPENING, it’s great!

I do have mixed feelings about this because it’s well written I just personally wasn’t feeling it. All the characters and even from the past, there was a lot going on but simple enough not to get lost or confused, definitely would read the previous books though. I just, I think from not reading these kinds for a while then jumping in, I expected something else and therefore couldn’t connect to the book well enough, although Luke if I had to pick was my absolute favorite! Again, very well written no doubt and for a M/M i haven’t read for a while i did enjoy it very much.

Dex & Luke
I have to admit I was beginning to be in a runt after reading books with too many similar situations and to not hinder on my views I decided to skip some books and read Often & Suddenly I needed a cleanse, to read something different and once again Gabrielle did not disappoint me.

This story is so much more than romance!

Dex is the problem solver he has lived most of his life with guilt and has taken upon himself to be the fixer! He fixes everyone’s issues and his issues are kept in a secure box for no one to deal with not even himself. Until one night changes his whole life and he’s left with more questions than answers.

Luke the handsome tattoo artist who is determined to not forget the amazing night he had and has become determined on making sure Dex’s questions of that night are all answered.

Dex is in unknown territories when he finally decides to take a leap and learn more about Luke. The problem is Dex has his own baggage of issues that he needs to come to terms with in his life. In order to accept the love, he needs to learn how to be able to give it and give it to the one and only person who understands him for who he is and doesn’t judge him.

When you find that true person that sees all your colors, all your negatives and all your positives and stays determined to bring them to light to you and just wants to love you above all! That's Luke! You will want your Luke after reading Often & Suddenly.

The chemistry between Luke and Dex is on 🔥. The relationship that is built between these two is absolutely incredible.

M/M Romance written beautifully!

“I like it deep, I like it rough, and I like it as a one-night stand.”

Gabrielle G. has written a fabulous M/M romance that is incredibly heartwarming with lovable characters. Often & Suddenly is Book 3 in the Angels and Sunshine Series, it can be read as a standalone.

We see Dex quite a bit in the first two books of the series and he is one of the lead male characters in this book. In the previous books, he has a no nonsense attitude that makes him appear rough and unfeeling. But in Often & Suddenly you see another side to him, the one he keeps hidden and private, the vulnerability, the guilt and the compelling need to help solve all his loved ones problems. You don’t realize that he carries the weight of his friends and family ‘s problems on his shoulders.

“The Dex I see isn’t this cold, heartless asshole you know, Jules. I see a guy who would always do anything for his friends. I see someone who always thinks of himself last. I heard him laugh. I saw him being sweet. I saw him vulnerable. He’s not what he seems to be. He’s overprotective of the people he loves, and I think he believes if he’s not there for us, we won’t love him. His dark sense of humor, his workaholism, his uptight tendencies, it all melts away when he’s with me. He’s it for me. I just wish I were it for him too.”

The other lead male character is Luke. Upon first impression you would think they are polar opposites, where Luke is a laid back tattoo artist to Dex’s uptight entertainment transactions lawyer. With the obvious chemistry between them, Luke and Dex make it work and find a way to overcome and love all of their differences. I adored how Luke is not afraid to express his feelings and how he helps Dex in his journey to communicate and do the same.

I recommend reading this moving, highly enjoyable and truly satisfying book. This book from author Gabrielle G. is an EPIC read. Often & Suddenly will join the ranks of the BIBLIO-ARISTOCRACY!!!

Love this quote. Totally words to remember! ❤️

Ah, Dextyn and Luke, how you have completely taken over my heart. Often and Suddenly is an incredible read. It was a steamy read that was also very poignant.

The book deals with themes such as addiction, mental health, homophobia and grief, and it was done sensitively.

I loved Dex and Luke together. They were a huge cluster-mess, but I loved their chemistry. There was always something in their path, but it made them grow into stronger people, and I adored that. And my heart broke for poor Dex. Such a strong and considerate human being.

Luke, Luke, Luke... Luke Gritt melted my heart. He was loyal and sweet and I loved that he brought out the vulnerable side of Dex. Such a sweetheart.

WARNING: It is VERRRRY steamy. Please keep a fan near you at all times, or maybe just jump into a cold shower every five minutes. Whatever works for you. LOL.

Often and Suddenly was a brilliant read. It was addictive, steamy, emotional and brilliant. I loved the characters (well, mainly most of them) and I wish Dex and Luke the best. A definite recommendation!

YESSSSS!!!! Luke and Dex! I love this story so much. First, we all know how much I LOVE M/M romances so this was definitely at the top of my list to read. Reading this book you would not know that this is actually the first MM romance written by this author. It is written well and has everything we love in a romance novel. And that angst.. oh damn.. It was heavy but it was enough! It was great!

Dex is so uptight, and if you have read the other books in this series you will understand what I mean. He needs to be in control. I loved being able to get inside his head and see what was going on. Luke is so laid back and the total opposite to Dex. They are the Ying and Yang of each other. I loved how 'rough' Luke came across but he is such a big teddy bear with a huge heart.

This book had me laughing, it had me tearing up! It was playing havok on my emotions that's for sure. I loved every single second of it. The only thing I think that needed to be expanded upon would be the whole Holden thing.. It came and went so quickly I am not sure about the significance of it. but other than that this book is everything! I can't wait for the next book from this author!

DNF @ 4%.

Signs that I was going to regret picking this book:
- *Each book in the Angels and Sunshine series can be read as a standalone, but for a better experience and understanding, the following order is recommended.*
- an included playlist
- a dedication “to all the overworked and underfucked”

And then we have Dex, who starts by telling us his two best friends never remember his birthday because they are so self-absorbed. Sounds like he needs new friends.

And then there’s some weird comment about another friend:

Did Ryan think of my birthday either? No. Should he have? Well you would think he would have remembered the first time he fucked a guy, but you never know where heteros stand with their homosexual experiments.

And then Dex explaining how he needs to fuck or be blown weekly or he gets a backache. So he knows he’s fucked the night before, even though he doesn’t recall it.

Then he goes in to be judgy about tattoo artist, Luke. all he does is get on my nerves about tattoos until I tell him to piss off. . How dare Luke be interested in what he does for a living, the gall. We live in different worlds. I wear Gucci suits every day, while he’s in ripped jeans and Target T-shirts..

Then he says his BFF is a “whiny, insecure baby”.

Then he calls Marlene, his “stupid assistant” and is verbally abusive to her.

Sounds like Dex’s friends aren’t the only people that suck. But, as they say, you’re judged by the company you keep. Awful friends for an awful person.

This is my first book by this author and I want to start by saying it was very well written. I didn't read the first two in this series because (based on reviews) the heroine in the first one would probably have drove me crazy and the second book...well I don't like reading books that involve addiction. That's not to say stories involving that I completely write off. I just have to be in the mood to read heavy material and most of the time I don't want to feel anxious and sad while reading. I picked this one up because it seemed to be a little less heavy.

These characters were so multi dimensional. Luke and Dex are so hot together and I really did love their journey together. Luke was such a strong shoulder for Dex. And Dex was a real teddy bear when he finally let his guard down. I didn't love that there was other guy drama and I can't say I loved the interactions between the friends at first. But Luke and Dex's relationship gave me all the feels.

These are just my personal preferences. So when you take out my personal preferences this story was beautifully written and such a good addition to my M/M bookshelf.

Now I see where the saying opposites attract come from! Gabrielle sure knows how to delivery an angtsy yet very steamy romance between two guys who couldn’t be anymore different. Dex was controling, uptight and yet it worked with Luke. Luke was the day to Dex’s night, he was relax and very heartwarming. I enjoyed reading about their story, them being such opposites made this story all worth reading. It become such a pageturner more and more into the book. Their attraction was off the charts and I couldn’t put it down. Besides the love story part of this book, I also enjoyed the other stuff that came with it. It made this story more realistic when it comes the “drama” with friends and other characters!

*I recieved this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you so much Gabrielle G for this opportunity!*

Often & Suddenly

This m/m book by Gabrielle G was so sweet and heartfelt. Dex and Luke are polar opposites but fit together like a puzzle piece. Their characters had undeniable chemistry and just fit so well together despite their noticeable differences. This is my first m/m book and I enjoyed every minute of it. I have followed this series from book 1 so I was always curious about Dex’s character. This book can be read as a standalone and the first 2 books don’t need to be read to follow Dex and Luke’s story. Although, I highly recommend them because I really enjoyed them and they are super good! 😉

I love how this book and series is so much more than just the love story between the two main characters. These characters become more than just people in a book. It’s reality and can hit close to home. This book had me in the feels. I loved Dex’s journey to find a place where he felt whole, happy and finally putting himself first. Luke was the support Dex needed to get to that place despite all the pushing away he did throughout the book. I connected with the pair as I felt I was in the story with them. I felt all their ups and downs, the push and pull, the hot and cold and especially their love.

If you are looking for a book that is heartfelt, put you in the feels and great characters then I highly recommend this one! If you haven’t read an m/m book because you are unsure I suggest taking that leap and reading Often & Suddenly as it is not about two males falling in love but two individuals finding who their heart beats for.

Often & Suddenly is my second read from Gabrielle G. and I think I loved this one more than the previous book in the series, Never & Forever, which I do suggest reading the entire series before this one just for more backstory and connection to this books couple, as well as the other characters.

This is also my first Male/Male romance, and I will be honest, I have always been wary of reading those because of the subject matter, not that I have anything against that. It is just something out of my comfort zone, and that is one of the reasons I asked to read this ARC. And Gabrielle G did it with perfection.

I saw past the matter of it being M/M, and just saw the characters themselves. Their imperfections and well as their strengths. It was very intriguing watching the dynamic between the two men ebb and flow. Dex and Luke are two of the best characters that I completely connected with on two different levels. I felt both of their concerns, disappointments and chemistry.

But these two couldn't be more different if they tried. Opposites do attract. Dex is a bit of a control freak, who tries to fix everyone's problems instead of focusing on his own, who pushes away anyone who could be more than just a fling. While Luke is a laid-back farm boy, who lives by the seat of his pants, and the guy who can easily be your best friend. Who isn't afraid to tell you exactly what you don't want to hear (the truth).

Their relationship started out as just mere acquaintances by being thrown together by having mutual friends. They soon realize they can't deny the attraction to each other but their baggage doesn't make the road to happiness easy. Do they give in or take the easy way out?

I not only recommend this book but anything the author has written! Her writing is just superb!

Often & Suddenly was a great MM read, with so much emotion and some funny moments and you can't forget the heated scenes! The suited Lawyer, uptight and grumpy Dex and the alpha tattooed easy going Luke, their worlds are so far apart that they make this relationship work! I did love the extended scooby-doo gang family!

I absolutely love Luke & Dex! Gabrielle hooks you from the very start. I could not stop reading. Yes, Often & Suddenly is a M/M romance but let me tell you, while I was reading I was so consumed by the story it was an afterthought that the story was M/M. Gabrielle did such a phenomenal job writing this book.

Luke, the bearded tattoo artist with a giant heart, who is hot AF! He's a relationship kind of guy and makes no apologies for it. Dex is the uptight lawyer, who's afraid of commitment. These two men couldn't be more opposite, but completely hot together. The chemistry they have is amazing. The push and pull of their relationship, and watching it grow as you read was fantastic.

I could not put this book down, I read it in one sitting! I had to know what would happen next. Every single character in this story brought something to the table.

This is the third book in the Angels and Sunshine series, and the first book I have read. However, there is nothing that will stop me from going back and reading the first two! I am forever a fan of Gabrielle!! If you love M/M books or aren't sure your a fan this book is perfect for you!

what can I say I loved this book so much. to be honest I didn't read so many mm romance but its a nice try.
now let's talk about the writing and the characters.
first, you meet Dex, the handsome man with business and straightforward attitude. he wears suits and he tries to save everyone he meets well not everyone but the people he cares about.
then you meet Luke and you know them both if you read the two first books in the series.
Luke is so opposite from Dex; he is not a suit man and he is all tattoos and piercing the thing Dex hates.
and what they say opposites do attract. I loved this book because for one, it is based on human emotions and connexions and the sex scenes aren't random.
yes luke and Dex is always horny for each other but like I said before they are so full of emotions.
as you continue reading you will notice even in the first books, Dex takes care of everyone and when you are so used to taking care of people and you forget to take care of yourself you just ignore yourself here when luke enter the picture and try taking care of Dex.
then you meet Luke's family and you will enjoy them so much. I laughed so hard.
anyway, again, I loved this book
Gabrielle G has her way of writing books; they are written with emotions and they are unique.
her style is unique.

I was secretly rooting for Dex and Luke in the previous books and i am so relived they found each other, this story touched on such real life emotions at points i was crying! They say opposites attract and in the case of Dex & Luke they were made for each other 💜 another fantastic story that I'm so glad to of been able to enjoy!

I'm usually not a fan of M/M books, but I trusted Gabrielle and am more than happy I did.
This book is a beautiful story about Dex and Luke, that we've already met in the first two books.
Dex the three-piece-suit, uptight, grumpy and hilarious control freak and Luke the most laid-back alpha tattoo artist in the group of famous and rich Hollywood stars. Two personalities that can never be on the same level, or can't they?
Like in all Gabrielle's books, you're from the first page full in the story. You're introduced to Dex "normal " behavior and his hilarious thoughts and plots 🤦🏻‍♀️
His self-induced misery, trauma and past that he has never really overcame.
He tries to compensates his past in sorting out other people's problems or like he likes to call his friends, the Scooby-Doo gang problems 😂
Luke on the other hand is the epitome of calm and peace.
He don't dwell on the past and lives in the moment, at least until he interacts with Dex 😂.
This is a beautiful, emotional, hot as hell 🔥, but also funny story about two people that fight for each other and against their insecurities and find the ultimate purpose in their lives. A emotional rollercoaster between not only two men, but also a group of people, that are more like family members than friends.
I loved and enjoyed this book so much, that I've read until 3 a.m. and couldn't work properly the next day 🤦🏻‍♀️
Yeah, Gabrielle I really needed Dex yesterday, to rescue me from my misery 😂

This book left me speechless. I finished it over 7 hours ago and my emotions are all over the place! Trying to come up with words to describe this beautifully written book and doing it justice, well let's just say I can't, this book was perfection! Dex is everything I thought he would be but SO MUCH MORE! He is sexy, bullish, controlling and so broken. So, exquisitely broken. The love he has for his family and friends is so deep you will never reach the bottom. His emotions that he never shows are just as deep. He deserves more than he realizes and Luke sees his worth. Luke is EVERYTHING! He is all kinds of sexy, loving, easy-going and most importantly patient. His patience for Dex seems to know no bounds even when he knows his heart can and will get broken. Luke and Dex together are pure magic! They just complete each other like two halves of a puzzle. Gabrielle G has once again proven she knows how to write and bring all of the feelings to life. This book has you feeling everything, the good, the bad and the ugly. But it is so worth the journey! Do not miss this beautiful love story!

A perfect, opposites attract, angsty MM love story!

I loved this book!

There is a picture out there on the interweb of Jason Mamoa hugging James Cavill from behind on a red carpet. Jason is all long hair, beard and tattooed and James seems a bit uncomfortable with the PDA in a perfectly tailored suit with his clean shaven face. As soon as saw it I wondered what their story would be like if they were in love. I think I found it.

Luke, the tattoo artist and Dex, the lawyer. They were like night and day, misfit from the beginning but their chemistry was off of the charts and the slow burn of their twisty and turny relationship made this book one that I couldn’t put down.

I loved Luke’s honesty and Dex’s vulnerability. I loved how they ran towards and retreated from each other over and over trying to find the perfect dance. I loved how protective they were of each other and how they wanted to bend for each other without compromising themselves in the process. And I really loved that they were a bit older than your average swoon-worthy H’s.

This is obviously the third book in the series. In order to really know the other characters/ story lines and how they all came to be, you should read the other books.

Loved it!

This is my first book by Gabrielle G. and I have to say that I have loved so many things about this book. Her writing flows really well, I could feel all the emotions she was trying to portray with these characters. The steamy parts were amazing too, no complaints here because I love me some good steamy scenes.
So this is MM friends to lovers type of romance. We have Dex "Dextyn Barclay Crawford the Third" who is the cranky uptight lawyer, anti relationship, man who knows what he wants and always gets it and then we have Luke, bearded tattoo sweetheart who just wants to find his love. Talk about opposites attract. I loved all the angst, the push and pull. I bet Luke was a favorite of whoever read and loved this book but I really have a soft spot in my heart for Dex. Always putting everyone first before his needs and wants, looking out for everyone but not seeing how much he is truly loved by everyone. He's come a long way in this book and I'm so proud of him. We all love HEA in books but this one really warmed my heart because when someone finally feels at peace and at home in someone's else love and accepts them for who they are, it is real and just beautiful. I will definitely be reading more books by this author.

Most of you who have been following my blog know I have become a bit of an M/M fanatic. Most people have the misconception that if you read M/M, it's for the sex. Hell, most people think if you read romance, it's for the sex. Don't get me wrong; the sex scenes are hot, but that's not why I read romance or M/M. Down to my bones, I am hopelessly romantic. I yearn for the story between two people where you find out what brings them together, what pulls them apart and when a well-written scene gives you so many butterflies they seem to want to burst from your fingertips. So with M/M it's even more than that, the dynamic between two male characters falling in love intrigues me and when written with not just affection but respect for the characters the book can melt me.
Gabrielle G.'s perspective of M/M romance in her new release Often & Suddenly might be a different look for someone who hasn't read a lot of M/M romance. She digs into the soul of her characters and gives you not just the beautiful parts of these two men falling in love but all the ugly as well.
I want to recommend to anyone who hasn't read the first two books in this series that you do so before reading Often & Suddenly. The first two books are not only excellent, but they will help to set up the story for Dex and Luke. I feel you will have a better connection and understanding to the characters if you do.
Dex Crawford and Luke Gritt couldn't be more different. Dex is an uptight control freak lawyer who feels he has to fix all problems that his family or friends find themselves in. Luke, on the other hand, is a laid back, upstate New York farm boy turned L.A. tattoo shop owner who lives his life without worry. Their friendship started more as acquaintances both having been thrust together through mutual friends. Slowly and almost unbeknownst to them their quasi friendship moves to true companionship where Dex realizes Luke doesn't need him to fix anything for him.
The road to together isn't one easily traveled for Dex and Luke, but Gab does a fantastic job of putting all their baggage out there in a way that has you rooting for them even before you might want to. Dex is easily my favorite male character to date. To put it bluntly, he's a dick. No beating around the bush, no sparring your feelings, and it's all utterly him. Yes, Dex has his own set of issues, and he pushes away anyone that could be a potential life partner, he is just a dick. And I absolutely loved him. If Dex seems like the worlds biggest asshole, Luke is the best friend you always wanted. He's caring and helpful, loves his family and close friends but isn't afraid to tell you when you're an idiot. And when you throw the two of them together, you not only get high heat chemistry but they make sense in the most perfect way.
Gabrielle G's books are a breath of fresh air in the romance world and Often & Suddenly was no different. She isn't afraid to write about the topics we sometimes want to hide from and always shows us the beauty of fighting your way out.

I popped my M/M cherry! Luke and Dex's story was intense. This was my first Gab G. read and it won't be my last.

Dex is a workaholic, brooding, loves to be in control of his life, and the carer of his friends and family. He wants to make sure everyone is ok, and that his circle of friends is in the normal of sorts, but reading this, they are not the normal of sorts, and thats perfectly ok. So, he's not used to being taken care of. Enter Luke...Luke has been around Dex's orbit, but not close enough. Luke and Dex have this intense, strong chemistry towards each other. They are opposites but work very well together when Dex isn't fighting it.

There were lots of issues Dex had to let go of, he needed to learn that being taken care of wasn't a weakness, and that Luke provided the security of that for him to truly be happy. I really enjoyed my first M/M read. It was intense, they love each other hard and so deep. Love is Love.

I have had high hopes for this book but it felt really flat and downright annoying sometimes. I only liked Luke because he was the only character in this book with some reality sense and I would not ignore the word some because he also had some childish tantrums, basically no one in this book behaved like adults and even though they were supposed to be in their late thirties and forties everyone behaved like they are 12 years old melodramatic teenagers. You can’t read this book as a stand-alone either.
