I really enjoyed this book.

I could tell the author did his research on bull riding the PBR and how they really are. I enjoyed the book a lot and had fun reading it. Overall the characters are pretty good and the pacing was good. I hope that the author continues to explore this series.

Loved it.

Good start to anew series.
I loved Hondo's Barbarian series. So I jumped ahead when the new book is released. I'm not disappointed. It was fun and awesome. I loved the MC and the girls. I'm looking forward to the next one.

Sexy, and almost but not quite too macho
-(Review of the full series at the bottom)-
This is an Urban fantasy - Harem with sex scenes - that has a unique "magic" system. Not gamelit.
The sex scenes are pretty hot, graphic but not gross.
The MC is Cowboy. Literally a retired rodeo bull-rider. This MC walks a fine line between halfway decent strong willed man, and a cartoon parody of a tough guy. Thankfully he seems to come down just on the side of decent guy. ...except for all the murders, but ya know... what's half a dozen murders? just kidding, Mafia goons don't count.
My one complaint here is the way Mr. Jinx tries to build tension by introducing endless delays. It raises tension a little and raises aggravation a lot.
The character Sage's sycophantic fawning over the MC is so over the top it's gag worthy, BUT... I am a sucker for the sexy librarian thing so if that drek mellows out in the next book, I'll give it a pass here.
-Oh, that's two complaints. My bad.

The entire power mage series -yeah, it gets Too Macho
I liked the balance in book one, but I had reservations. As the series progresses the MC gets meaner, more violent, and more chauvinistic.
This guy can do "magic" but all he does with it is recreate guns, turn into a bull, and reassure himself that what he thinks is right.
Where the MC was an interesting, and somewhat open minded person in book 1, he becomes a cartoon cliche of a redneck that checks off every conceivable box from the pick up truck, to hating "craft" beer. For someone who is so sure he is right about everything, he is strangely defensive and harbors a reactionary inferiority complex- Imagining that city-slickers are looking down on him and laughing behind his back.
This series pays lip service to 'traditional family values' but by the end it becomes a neo-conservative political allegory. There is even a scene where all the good people are represented on a map in red wile all the fools are shown in blue.
I got tired of this whole thing in book 5, and book 6 was a struggle to get through. At 75% done with book 6 all I wanted to do was quit. I get a funny feeling that Hondo Jinx felt the same way.
-Oh, and when I said "The sex scenes are graphic but not gross." that was for book one, they do get gross, and creepy as the series goes on and disturbingly misogynistic by the end.

This one is pretty good. All these harem magical adventures are the same, the trick is finding something that stands out just a little to make it interesting. The main thing that stood out in this story from the beginning for me is the main character. He is a cowboy bull riding champion. Initially I thought that was too cheesy a setup and I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book. While it was a little quirky, it wasn't cheesy like I was expecting and it actually made the story more interesting. Everything else was the typical setup. MC shows up and finds out he has magical powers which he never knew he has. A hot woman finds him and tells him about the magical world that he never knew before. We find out he is some super special person that nobody has seen for a while and everyone is out to get him.

The story flowed well, the characters were funny, and each of his women had completely different personalities. The magic system was interesting if not explained in great detail, but enough. Overall a solid addition to the harem fantasy world.

Shockingly, one of these harem jobs where the MC isn't a douche and the author knows guns.

“You can’t score 90 points on a timid bull...”

What a ride. I am one of the slowest readers you will ever meet, but I flew through this book.

I will try to avoid spoilers...

The story follows Brawley who is about as manly as you can freakin get. The dude is a successful professional bull rider from West Texas, breaks his freakin neck, and that’s before he even learns he is a freaking power mage.

After saving a flying cat, yes you read that right, life gets interesting, in a hurry. The action immediately picks up and we are introduced to his first “wife” Nina. (The girl on the cover) she is awesome, and The author does a good job of adding some intriguing backstory.

Brawley learns more about his psi powers and it is very interesting how he gains “psi levels”...The psi levels are really the only Gamelit aspects that stood out to me in this book. Not a bad thing, just different from Hondo’s first series.

There are some great action scenes and some pretty intense sex scenes, so if that is not your cup of tea this book is probably not for you. It appears it is only going to intensify in the next book.

There are several side storylines that I am definitely intrigued as to how they will be resolved, namely with Nina’s family, potential wives/powers for Brawley, and the psi mafia.

I definitely enjoyed Brawley’s backstory, and how he doesn’t start out as an unsure/weak dude, but as a strong dude that gets stronger, like head explodingly so. Spending a lot of time in West, TX myself, he nails a lot of the details surrounding that culture which I loved.

The one area I wish there was a little more put into is Sage, Brawley’s other “interest”. There just wasn’t enough book to add much back story surrounding her, so I am hoping Hondo adds more in book 2.

I would definitely recommend this one, unless you don’t like harems, graphic violence, and cussing. Otherwise you will really enjoy it.

Great work and I look forward to book 2.

Good starting book for new series. The author brings the same formula that made his last series a hit so anyone that has expierenced the author other works is going for more of the same dosis. There is a funny mix between the archaic magic and the ESP in this series, have high hopes for this.

My first harem fantasy and it was fun. In the world of romance and PNR recently, you couldn't spin a book mark without hitting a reverse harem novel. I always thought this was funny since I had never heard of a harem novel. For me the romance for PNR was always an interesting plot device that helped keep the characters interesting and involved.

The two things that made stories annoying is love triangles that didn't make sense (which most of them are). And not bringing the love interests together because of some ill-conceived idea that drawing it out was better for the story (which it rarely does). (Seriously authors, don't do either of these!)

So I was surprised when this turned into what might be thought of as a internet harem fantasy. And frankly it works. I am not going to say that the characters are deep or the writing is excellent, because that would not be true. The characters work and not exactly one-dimensional. And the writing is OK, better than some of the more popular romance novels. But the story is fun and it is sadly a fast read. It already feels like a book was serialized into 6 for some odd reason. But there is enough here to make me want to keep reading.

Huge shout out to the narrator, Andrea Parsneau. How she does all these voices blows my mind. She rocks!

Maybe now that I have actually read a Harem novel, I will read one of the thousand reverse harem novels. (Anyone have any suggestions for a good one?)

Similar premise, but a different (great) story

This is a really fun book to read, thoroughly enjoyed the various characters and the setup for a really good story. The premise is similar to a few other books I have read in that the MC is a ‘mage’ from a thought to be lost but overpowered blood line appears, and will be hunted down. God of Magic and American Dragon are two stories with a similar starting premise, but this story has no other major similarities. With Power Mage the MC accesses magical abilities by having sex with females who have these abilities, opening up the ability for him, but in doing so forms a lasting bond with the girl. With magical factions and the government seeking the MC, this seems to be a full on ‘chase’ series, as he tries to get powerful enough to protect himself and his girl(s). This was a tight story, with enough action, sex and character development to make it a great read and hard to put down. Looking forward to book 2.

The story as a whole is actually ok. A sort of popcorn flick novel. Love the girls. Each one has a distinct personality. The power system is distinctive if not a bit illogical. The villain is rather 2 dimensional.
I don't get the logic of sleeping with a girl, to not only unlock the MC's dormant abilities (there are 6 or 7) but that makes them bonded for life, whether the girl like him or not or even if the MC like her or not.

The main villain is kind of clear cut villain that feels slightly a carbon copy of "He who must not be named" or even the villain from Kung Fu Panda 2. In the that he/she heard a prophecy that could destroy them and their quest for power and rule.

Great first book

I will be honest, when I first tried to read Dan the Barbarian, I did not like it and dropped the book.
When I saw that Jinx made a new book, I was skeptical.

But now, I am happy to have read this book.
It was awesome.
The characters, especially Brawley, Nina and Sage were very good and funny to read about.
The plot, while a bit slow, it was easy to follow and their is room for more.

Looking forward to the sequel and who Brawley's girls next girls will be.

I'm increasingly wary of (perhaps fatigued by) these harem books, but I gave this a go based on my enjoyment of the author's "Dan the Barbarian" series. I was not disappointed, as this is well-written and well-executed for the genre. Not great literature by any stretch, but a fun read with high-enough stakes to give it some suspense.

The MC is justifiably confident and determined as opposed to smug which is really what makes the book work. The women need more development; I anticipate a more "alpha" female addition to the group (I suspect I know who) in the next book, and I think that's necessary for balance.

It ain't Dan, but it ain't bad either!

Coming to this after being two books into the Dan The Barbarian series, I am cautiously hopeful for this series. I version's love Brawley, who doesn't love an ad shucks type with a bad ass streak two miles long? Love the lore of the psi, but a lot of the psi folks act like a**holes, so not sure on that. Still, can't wait to see how all this plays out and look forward to the next book!

Exciting

A cracking start to his new series about a rodeo rider and his psionic powers.
The plot follows the tried and tested method of the main charachters true family being hidden from him at an early age to protect him. Thus following the idea to get more power get more wives and stay one step ahead of everybody else, simple but well written and plenty of action and the psionic strands are well thought out!

I liked it. Good porn and decent power progression with a good story.
My biggest complaints-
The author drags everything out too much. Too many inconsequential yet very detailed drawn out scenes with nobodies. Why do I need to have the same room described in detail multiple times when different people enter it.
Also too many POVs. I hate that.
Also the Mc is an intelligent man making intelligent decisions (which I love) but becomes an idiot a few times to cater to plot points (lazy).

Very promising!!

Only one dislike: it was too short and the next one isn't out yet! Well that's two but who's counting?

Awesome start to the series. Plenty of action and fun to balance the character and plot development. The characters have depth and uniqueness and The plot isn't plain and 2 dimensional.

I'm definitely impressed and eagerly awaiting the next book!!!

4.5 stars.
This is one of the dumbest most entertaining books I’ve ever read. It’s fast-paced, corny, and sexy. And somehow it works.
Minus .5 stars for how stupid and corny it is (Really? They have to have sex to access their power? So stupid!)
But definitely worth 5 stars for the entertainment. (The writing is average - just pretty straightforward.)

Awesome introduction to the world of psionics

Couldn't put it down. Finished it in a day. Story is about a MC who finds his first two mates and sets up story for much larger conflict, more world building and a harem to fill. Can't wait to see who he matches with and how his power and group will grow.

Entertaining Read

Brawley, the champion bull rider, finds magic within himself when he rescues a cat from drowning. What to do now? He has the power, but how does he use it? He needs teachers. Lust is magically converted to love. Does that mean he will need to find more compatible women? I like the action, humor, and romance. I look forward to the next book.

Oh lord not another “Punchingly McHugeKnob was one awesome dude. Maybe it was his punching skills, or maybe it was his huge knob, but the men looked up to him, and so did the women, because he was on top of them, having sex with them. The women, definitely not the men. Anyway, he flexed a markedly heterosexual bicep as he...”

I really enjoyed this storyline... Harem with a soft serve of sexuality!

Hondo Jinx has never let me down by producing a boring story and this one is not an exception. From bull riding to sexy women and lots of gunplay this book serves it in heaping portions. Fortunately, the next book in the series is already out!

Cool take on Psi Powers!

I really enjoyed this book. It has the right element of action and sex. I feel that the story has only good things in store for it. I don’t like leaving spoilers but this book is worth your time.

Amazing

Wasn't too sure on picking this up. Hondo writes some interesting stories, but not all to my taste. This one is rousing, dark and lustful, and ended all too soon. Waiting for the next!
