All I wanted was a fresh start when I left my abusive ex-boyfriend behind in Austin. What I got? A den of wolves.
No, I mean literal wolves—moon worship, fangs and all.
Sebastian and Victor? One’s troubled and dangerous, the other’s as overprotective as he is overpowered, and they’re both alpha males. Speaking of alphas, each of them thinks I’m his “fleur.” Which I’m guessing is another term for “omega.”
If I wanted anything to do with the wolf pack or its super-exclusive “gentleman’s club,” I’d be flattered that the twins are fighting over me like a scrap of meat, but I’m not that kind of guy no matter what they insist I am and there’s nothing gentlemanly about the wolves who run the Lodge.
Problem is, they’re not the only ones who are after me. Keeping the wolves at bay is hard enough, but when a vampire from my past comes calling, I’ll have to choose sides—and a mate—just to survive.

Joel Abernathy, also writing as L.C. Davis, is a trans author of MM romance. He enjoys writing dark and emotional romance about men loving men in all genres.
I had to abandon this at 15%. The writing, the dialogue, the motivation and actions of the characters were pedestrian. I’ve loved other JA books, but this was the first I e read that was originally written under the LC Davis pen name—now re-edited and rereleased under Joel Abernathy. It really feels like two different authors. This is FAR below the quality of Exhale, which I LOVED!
**I received an ARC from the author for an honest review**
DNF 58% There’s a lot happening in this one but honestly I was bored. The basic world building is interesting but not only is there way too much telling, the way these characters flip-flop around each other is annoying. They constantly change their mind or say one thing and do another. And then when something finally has me excited it happens off page and we get a recap. I really, really hate that.
There’s also a lot of threads left dangling. A lot of “not my story to tell...” type stuff designed to reel the reader in. I really hate that, too. The story and characters should be compelling enough on their own to make me want more. I stopped falling for that trick years ago. Now it’s a pet peeve. I suppose it comes down to the writing for me, but YMMV.
3.5 Stars. This is another really interesting book from JA. It's not formulaic and it has twists and turns that a reader can't really predict. The biggest problem is that the balance between liking and hating Sebastian is skewed too much toward the reader hating him at this point. It makes it easier to understand the attraction between Remus and Victor. In a m/m/m it's rarely good to be rooting for two out of the three to get together. It also throws me off of the m/m/m idea because Sebastian and Victor are twins. But I'm hooked right now and want to see what comes next and how a real m/m/m relationship could possibly come out of this messed up situation at this point.
Small niggly plot thing that bugs me: I'm confused by the use of Ulhric. Why include him if he has the answers and nobody insists he help? Why include him if he just disappears without reason throughout the book.
The blurb sounded interesting and the grammar and writing style was clear and mostly error free.
I liked Remus and Victor when they weren't being so self-sacrificing. The story beyond the "romance" was intriguing enough to keep me reading even when I would have stopped.
What I didn't like is the whole Vampire Diaries theme that carried to the cliffhanger. Two brothers (werewolves instead of vampire) want the same man, both claiming he's their mate. Spoilers: Remus is a great character at first. He meets Sebastian first and gets marked without knowing it and before he meets the other brother Victor. At first I thought Sebastian was ok but the more I got to know him, I really started to hate him as a person. Just another immature possessive meathead, more brawn than brains. He leaves throwing a tantrum basically leaving Remus when Remus needed him most. Coming back later acting like he's the injured party. That was the end for me liking him at all and he proved me right over and over and....yeah you get the point. Victor on the other hand was a little confusing for me at first but I feel in love with his character as the story continued. He's smart and turns out to seem to be the one that really loves Remus unconditionally. So I was a little sick when Sebastian shows up again and Remus chooses him. I was queasy reading their sex scene, so not hot and felt sooooo wrong. Of course Sebastian really shows what kind of person he is throughout the rest of the story making him toxic. Victor is picking up the pieces. At this point in the story a lot of action starts really happening and Remus finds out about who he really is and is put thru the wringer. Remember Vampire Diaries? Yeah Remus turns off his emotions when he can't handle it and now he's pulled more in Victor's direction. Their sex and chemistry was hot. I'm not sure where this is headed. I can't say whether or not I would read the sequels. For me, with romance, I have to connect with the MCs especially if there are more than 2. In a poly romance if you dislike even one of the main men than the story feels wrong on so many levels. If you start rooting for one to get killed off because you hate them as much as the bad guys???? It becomes a real problem to keep reading.....
"I just wanted him to claim me and make me feel something, even if it was only pain."
Pendulum is the first book in Joel Abernathy's Kingdom of Night trilogy. It was everything I expected and wanted from a Joel Abernathy novel, a page turner that I couldn't put down. He has yet again created a unique spin on the supernatural world, full of secrets and surprises.
Remus is starting over after escaping an abusive relationship in Texas. On the first day of school he makes a friend who introduces him to a world of BDSM and the supernatural. Before he knows it he finds himself torn between two werewolf brothers, on top of learning that someone at some point in his life hide his memories from him. As he breaks down the walls in his mind he discovers his life's in danger, and he has to risk his life and humanity to protect the ones he loves.
Pendulum Joel Abernathy is a fantastic storyteller. His story lines are addicting and passionate. Especially with Pendulum, every time I felt or thought a certain way and BAM something would happen to change it. At times, I felt the story was being to cryptic and there was so much going on that I felt out of the loop on. Despite that I was fully invested in the story, and every punch in my heart was worth it.
I’m not sure how I feel about this, I’ve read the blurb for the next two books in this series and this just feels like a merry go round! 🙄 Same story line with nothing getting accomplished.
OMG I loved this book. So many twists and turns, and I kept guessing how the story would go and kept getting it wrong. I loved the chemistry between Remus and Sebastian. And Remus and Victor. And yes the book does end in a cliffhanger but what a way to leave us wanting to know what happens next. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
Sadly I found this a chore to read. I loved her other book, Bleed, but while this one in the same dark vein, it fell short in every other way.
First, it doesn't make sense and was frustrating on the contest. If he knew he didn't enter and didn't want to go through with it, why go through with it?
The relationships - not feeling the sparks. It feels forced and like the MC doesn't have a choice. Why is there this bonding that makes no sense?
This was not a romance. It was a war. The brothers pettily fight each other and frustrate me through the whole book.
How can something as important as a mark be given accidentally?
If he's a potential soul mate, why would one of them kind of give up easily in comparison?
The villain, when revealed, is cheesy. It's also too long.
The book is confusing and gets worse the longer it continues.
The "dungeon" stuff felt fake to me as well, it felt more obligatory than anything.
The book kept getting more boring after an exciting start.
I'm not crazy about any of the three main characters. Sebastian turns into a jerk in the end, Remus doesn't seem to care enough with some of the emotions being strangely all over the place, and Victor is just odd.
It took me awhile to read and I was glad it was over. I'll check out more of the author's stuff since I liked one series, but this one? A big pass.
*I voluntarily read a Review Copy of this book. All opinions stated are solely my own and no one elses*
5 stars
The blurb piqued my interest but did the author deliver? Hell yeah!
Pendulum was a riveting story right from the very beginning. Remus moves for a fresh start but fate had other things in mind for him.
I initially liked Sebastian yet as the story progressed he became someone I hardly recognised. I wanted to button that mouth of his towards the end. His hurtful words shattered everything including the one person’s heart he should have protected and treasured.
Victor and Sebastian were so very different yet their love and affection for Remus shined fiercely throughout. Their bonds were tested especially, towards the end. Which brother will stand by Remus and accept him for who he is? I really liked Victor but my heart broke for him. His sadness echoed so painfully throughout and my heart ached for him.
The author built up the mystery and suspense really well. There were several twists and surprises along the way. I absolutely loved this book; it exceeded my expectations in every way imaginable. I eagerly look forward to the next book.
Not without issues. 3.5 Stars really. At times it seems confused and unsure and you are not sure if you should/should not like certain characters. Given it's a trilogy I'm not sure but I really want to see what happens next.
This book is not at all what I expected. THIS BOOK IS GLORIOUS. I can't even really say what I DID expect, because I don't even fully remember reading the blurb before I started this book? I do love Joel Abernathy's books a LOT, so I didn't really give it a second thought before I got this book off KU and downloaded it straight to my Kindle. I think I just saw in the heading that this was a MMM romance, and I went SIGN ME UP. So, it was kind of surprising to find out this is a polyam v book? It doesn't ever hint at incest, but two of the guys in this polyam are twin brothers.
The focus of this story is Remus. The story is told entirely from his first-person POV and I love him dearly. He has moved from Austin, Texas to Washington State to attend a university there, with also the hopes of escaping his abusive ex-boyfriend. He's getting settled into his psych classes and suddenly finds a great new roommate and friend, and everything's really looking up.
And then this new friend of his takes Remus to a "gentleman's" club called the Lodge, that's holding a competition for submissives for their "Alpha". It's a very in-your-face competition, in that the naming is just so blatant, it's a wonder no one wises up to the truth earlier. It's both madness and utter genius.
The story starts out all fun and games. Remus is here to change his life, and gets swept up into a competition he never wanted to enter, and he's suddenly gained the attention of a lot of werewolves.
This book took me OUT. This book is quite long for a romance book, but it took me no time at all to read this because the writing and the characters are so fascinating. There's a huge shift in tone near the end. It goes from fun and kind of campy to MURDER. It's an absolutely massacre. You know that feeling you got when the ballroom scene took a bit of a turn in The Cruel Prince? I got that same jaw-dropping feeling with Pendulum. For a story with werewolves and vampires, I really should have been expecting it, but like Remus, I feel like I was lulled into a sense of security with the wolves at the Lodge, and I think it's time to take everything a LOT with much more gravitas than before. There is something I can only relate to with the Vampire Diaries regarding a character shutting off his humanity, and there are definite consequences to doing that which will make the next book in this series much more interesting.
One thing I do kind of laugh at is Remus's name. How do you name your kid Remus and expect him to choose to be anything but a werewolf? You have no one else to blame but yourself.
To get this out of the way, there's no threesomes in this book. This is a slow burn and sex isn't really the primary focus of this story, so there's really not all that many sex scenes either. Consent is very clear in this book (and when consent in a nonsexual matter occur gets called into question, it does get called out).
We have the two brothers, Sebastian and Victor, who are in love with Remus, and we get to see Remus's affections go from one to the other. I find it really interesting to see a MMM relationship develop so slowly in a series, but I really like it a lot and I'm looking forward to seeing how this develops. There's no mpreg in this series, so that's good. Mpreg isn't really my thing, so I'm glad that's not something I have to worry about with this one.
Sebastian's like a jock, but he's not as dense as he initially seems. He's actually a lot smarter than people give him credit for. Victor, on the other hand, is the studious brother but has a darker edge to him that initially makes Remus fear him. The more we learn about the brothers, the more you realize that Remus will come between them (no pun intended).
Victor has always given Sebastian whatever he wanted. Victor is completely self-sacrificing when it comes to his brother, but Remus is not someone Victor will simply give up without a fight once he knows that he stands a chance against Sebastian. Remus has enough problems in his life that he's trying to shove away without having to worry about two werewolves fighting over him, but of course, choosing only one brother isn't so simple.
Although Remus attends university, I wouldn't call this a NA book. I think it still sits more on the adult romance side of things, since this isn't quite a journey of discovery for Remus in the usual, human sense.
There is a bit of a shocker ending that leaves you with a cliffhanger, so it's a good thing that the second book is already out and I can't wait to start it.
Pendulum was an OK read. I was going to give it 4 stars, but pushed it back to 3. The first 50% of the book was kind of boring to me and it seemed like every time Remus asked a question he was diverted in a way you would distract a toddler from chewing on the remote. He would totally let the subject drop and act helpless about everything happening to him. Or faint.
Example:
Sebastian came off as uninteresting and dense. Victor was sort of interesting in the way he kept trying to explain the lore to Remus, but was always cut off by other people. His redeeming quality to me was that he actually always tried to be honest with Remus. Also,
It just came off as awkward.
And what's up with all the leather pants? Every time I turned a page, someone was donning leather pants. I don't know. It was weird for me. One pair of leather pants will suffice.
In a little dissapointed. I feel like the book and the MMM never really came together. It's fine to have the the opposition angst and differences, but at some point where was the romance and the threesome. The sex was dry and not romantic. Tanya went from one end of the spectrum to the other. Although the story continues in future books, this one should make you want to read the next book and complete the series. I want to read the book to just finish the story, but hope it gets a lot better. Others i wouldn't want to read anymore of his "romance" stories.
Pendulum was, in a word, uneven. What I'd expected going in was a mix of drama, sexy fun times, and a fine layer of urban fantasy.
It felt almost like two different books after the midway point.
It was to the point it felt almost like emotional whiplash in terms of tone and characters' behavior. Nothing wrong with switching gears, per se, but it could've benefited from a much smoother transition.
I really couldn't stand Sebastian as a character; I found him controlling, withholding, demanding, and uncaring for Remus' wants or needs despite the former's claims of love and care. I honestly gravitated towards Victor as a romantic interest far easier. If this series is truly meant to end in an m/m/m HEA, it's got its work cut out for it in redeeming Sebastian in my eyes.
Remus was a sympathetic character but more than once I was so frustrated by his inability to demand answers or assert himself even the smallest amount. The more it happened, the less it felt like a facet of his abuse-survivor personality and more like a plot contrivance to keep the mystery alive until later.
Victor struck a good balance between mysterious, alluring, dangerous, and yet vulnerable. His chemistry with Remus was much better-crafted to me than Remus and Sebastian, so I'd say their sexy fun time scenes were among my favorites. The scenes at Sarah's grand party were also well-executed in that they kept me guessing, maintained tension, and sold me on at least most of the characters' actions and feelings.
After Remus' descent into vampirism, I couldn't predict where the story was going to go which was interesting in its own right. The twist at the very end with Arthur and Prentice Winters left enough questions to keep me hanging on.
Sadly, I don't see Pendulum joining my shelves but at the same time I enjoyed enough of it to investigate book two.
I’ve been wanting to read this for ages and I’m so glad I finally did! I loved this! This book has great mix of werewolves and vampires, it isn’t afraid to get gritty and dark, but it also has the romance you’d like in a m/m book. I’ve been wanting to read a darker paranormal romance lately so this was a treat.
Sebastian and Victor are great characters and I’m much more interested in Remus after the end of the book. His character seems to be going down a path I haven’t seen in a book like this before and I’m really intrigued by it.
After that end I can’t help but start the second book right away. I’m loving the direction this series is going in and can’t wait to see what happens next!
This was just an amazing series, and a great first book to it. It really just dragged me in and kept me engaged all the way to the end.
I really like Remus. I think that he really is just so strong, even when it looks like he is non-confrontational and lets people walk all over him. He discovers his strength through the book and the rest of the series.
Sebastian and Victor are both good men, with some failings, like most people, but overall, good. They care about their pack and want the best for them. I think they both need to be smacked sometimes, though.
Remus, Sebastian and Victor are some of my fave characters ever! this was such a good book, a little darker than most, but exciting and steamy! i can't wait for book two to read more! loved this book! would def recommend. Joel Abernathy is on of my fave writers, good stuff.
"Es todo un quiero pero no llego" La historia promete pero no acaba de hilar bien la trama y no te engancha La relación entre ellos es como muy superficial por lo que no acabas de ver la química Y todo lo alarga indefinidamente, no me extraña que le salgan 3 libros de 300pg Una pena porque me gusta pero me aburre tanto que claudico, hay mucha cosa por ahí por leer.....
I was absolutely amazed with this book. I can't wait for the next one. This book gives you a little of everything love, heartbreak, friendship, and the ending just keeps you waiting for more.
Oh man this was such a good series to stumble upon! I can’t wait for the next book in the series! I’m thinking about diving into it right now even though I’m really tired! I think there were some parts of the story that developed really quickly in respect of the relationship between Remus and Sebastian. I thought that there were parts that could have been expanded on and developed a littler better. That being said I had such a great time going through the rollercoaster that was the story and can’t wait to see what comes next! 4.5 stars!
