Ever read On the Road? Or seen Tommy Boy? This is just like that, but with Spider-Man and Deadpool. The two red-clad heroes are traveling across America, discovering their country and true friendship — and just like every other great road trip, this one ends up in the Negative Zone! Our heroes are way out of their element — and need to get the heck back to their world pronto, or they'll miss the rampaging bug monsters laying waste to the Marvel Universe! But the Negative Zone-threat known as Blastaar the Living Bomb-Burst doesn't care about any of that. One thing's for sure: Spidey and Deadpool can't face this threat alone. They're holding out for a Deviant hero!
This was so much better than previous volumes. Maybe because Thompson stepped away from trying to tell a complicated longer story and just focused on a fun adventure for Spider-Man and Deadpool? Spidey and Deadpool go on a road trip and find themselves teaming up with some obscure characters of the Marvel universe like Bug and the Eternals. (Although I'm sure the Eternals will start popping up everywhere with the movie coming out next year.). There's this whole schtick with Deadpool talking to the comic readers that was hilarious. There's also a Tom King, Mister Miracle joke that made me do a spit take. (Just make sure you aim away from your comics if that happens to you.) Matt Horak's and Jim Towe's art were both very solid. Hey, as long as it's not Scott Hepburn, I'm happy.
Spidey and Deadpool need some bonding time after all their recent troubles, so of course, it's time for a cross-country road trip that ends in the Negative Zone. This is what happens when you let Deadpool plan your route...
These five issues start and end in basically the same place, but the middle is something else entirely. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing or not. There's a lot going on, with some Eternals, some new characters, Blastaar is there, and Bug, and...I don't really know what the whole point of the story was, to be honest. The jokes are pretty solid, and Deadpool really leans into the whole fourth wall breaking which I thought would get repetitive, but is actually pretty good. There's a Miracle Man riff that made me put the book down and snigger for a bit before I could finish the issue.
On art we have Matt Horak and Jim Towe who continue their run from the past few volumes. Both are serviceable artists, but I couldn't pull them out of a crowd at the moment unfortunately. I think Towe's probably the better of the two, with a style that skews somewhere between Paco Medina and Cory Smith.
I've nothing too much to say about this volume. After the last few Spideypool stories, this feels kind of pedestrian, and that's odd to say given that we end up in the Negative Zone.
This series was fun overall. Sometimes it leans a bit too much into the "importance of friendship" stuff. I think it's better when the characters are just riffing and being ridiculous.
There were tons of writers on this run, but they managed to keep the tone pretty light and the action interesting. There are also plenty of character crossovers throughout that are always a nice plus.
Overall, this series isn't deep. And that's what makes it great. It's just bright, goofy comic madness and that can be a delight.
There were two pieces of work this year which really impressed me with their fourth wall antics: Fleabag's second series, where another character notices her asides to the viewer: and Gillen and Wijngaard's Thunderbolt, with its nine-panel-grid as superpower.
And this unremarked arc from a comedy book nobody much notices beat them both to it.
I don't say that to big myself up, either. It's not a series I think about unless I happen to see one I've not read in the library. I am no prophet of a great, underrated comic this time. Not least because it's not as good as either of the aforementioned things you have heard about. And I have no reason to believe any of the people involved in the more heralded projects were ripping this off (I'm not saying Phoebe Waller-Bridge definitely doesn't read Spider-Man/Deadpool, but I am struggling to picture it; besides, the lead time wouldn't have been enough). Just one of those curious ideaspace synchronicities. Steam engine time, lightbulb time, hero fights his way back from the past to reclaim his mantle from his former sidekick time. And now fourth wall trick upgrade time. Still deeply unsettling, though.
Aside from that: it's fine, but I could have done with more road trip, less Negative Zone.
Fourth wall? More like fourth window. I just loved the back and forth between Deadpool and Spider-man about the fourth wall, so entertaining. And the way the editors 'messed' with Deadpool. And Spider-man tries to break the fourth wall too! So adorable *pats Spider-man on the head*
This was kind of the perfect Spider-Man/Deadpool story: TONS of laughs; some nice insight into these heroes' motivations; and solid, fast-paced action. The amount of fourth wall-breaking in this graphic novel was kicked up to 11 and was as much an examination at that literary device as it was straight-up humor. The idea of reader interactions as a means of character development (specifically Deadpool avoiding certain situations) was downright clever. Spider-Man's attempts at breaking the fourth wall, coupled with Deadpool actually talking with the writers... I mean, it was a fourth wall-breaking buffet! The page layouts of the road trip were also particularly creative (with the outlines of different states accompanying the action--including good ole O-H-I-O!). The cliffhanger ending just made this comic even better. Can't wait for Vol. 9!
I think this book might have finally run out of storylines. It's still funny, and even funnier when Deadpool tries to teach Spidey about 'fourth wall breaks', but they seem to really be pulling from the bottom of the barrel in what they want them to do. Deciding to go on a road trip together gets them in more trouble than the guys from "The Hangover". Giant bugs in the desert, making friends with a hero named "Bug", taking a trip to the Negative Zone to team up with rogue Eternals to fight Blastaar... what is going on here? Just as I thought about quitting it.... that final page... "Nope! You've just begun the biggest event in Marvel History!".... ugh, guess I'll go to the next one. Really need the book to take a huge leap in all aspects. Recommended only from the most fanatic of Deadpool fans.
I feel like what harmed this book was not letting Wade and Peter have more genuine conversational moments. This series loves to sidetrack them with action and banter but I feel like the true charisma of their relationship shows when they’re allowed to be honest and emotional! Not letting Wade see Peters face in that cave was a mistake, I think, and the conversation they finally would’ve had would’ve been much more interesting than all that other stuff that happened 😂
Still too meta. If Thompson is so set on making all his jokes and character interactions revolve around fourth wall breaking, he should honestly just write for Gwenpool instead.
And no, it doesn’t help that the comic is self-aware enough to address that it “creates a distance” when used too often or that Gwenpool does it even more than DP. It still gets repetitive and boring. I really only enjoyed it the few times Spider-Man gave it a shot.
Author Robbie Thompson sends the titled heroes on a road trip to The Negative Zone and its not everything it could be. The book does well when it focuses on Wade/Peter's relationship. Unfortunately, a lot of time is spent on the most random guest stars that no one asked for. The jokes were good though especially Peter trying to get a grip on breaking the fourth wall. The art by a couple artists was very solid. Overall, funny but pointless.
I no longer remember this. Did they go to the Negative Zone? Was this the one where it was just a couple of small adventures that didn't seem to have an overall theme or anything? Or was that another one?
It sounds really stupid, but the size of the collection matters. I know they can get the revenue faster if they issue shorter volumes, but . . . .
Delivering a much simpler story than some what we've gotten from this series, Vol. 8 doesn't have a ton of deapth, but it's a fun read nonetheless. The fourth-wall breaking meta-narrative is as strong as ever, the ending sets up some very interesting developments for the future, and a single panel delivered one of my favorite meta-jokes that I've read in quite some time.
The early road trip stuff was pretty funny, I liked seeing Spidey try and interact with Wade's comic-readers lol! Got a little boring once the bug stuff started up in my personal opinion. This comic just starts feeling more and more like primarily side-plot, I wish the different writers collaborated a bit more.
Silly and tongue-in-cheek. There’s so much fun fourth-wall breaking and the fact that Deadpool tries to explain it all to Spidey made it even more entertaining. The actual plot wasn’t that interesting, but the duo made it all worth it.
Another funny Spider-Man/Deadpool. Loved Spiderman's comments on Deadpools talking to the readers. Also loved the poor villain who kept being interrupted so could not get their 3rd person monolonge out and seem very disappointed at this. LOL
Spider-Man/Deadpool Vol. 8: Road Trip is full of Road Trips, Sword Swing, Rib Breaking Humour, Forth Wall Breaking, Heroics, Crossovers, Adventure and Action! :D Crisp High Five! :D Get it When You Can! :D
cute snd fun adventure ! it was my first deadpool comic so it was interesting seeing him break the fourth wall. you can see the stark difference between the two characters and their morals.
i kinda didn’t give a gaf about the negative space peeps
