Paul’s a normal he likes sports, junk food, and action movies—he even wants to be in one someday. But what seems like Paul’s big break, his very first acting role, quickly takes a turn for the worse. One minute he’s on a festive bus heading for a new life of stardom, and the next, he’s hurtling toward the ground and certain death. Though saved at the last minute by an unexplained parachute, things don’t get any easier when Paul he’s lost on an unknown island, he’s unable to speak, and every time he sees someone else, he hears strange noises and then blacks out . . . before falling from the sky again. But when a girl inexplicably saves him (and spray paints him) instead of attacking, Paul starts to learn the survival basics. Bit by bit, he must explore his surroundings, build structures, evade violent storms, unlock the mysteries of his strange island prison, and maybe—just maybe—find a way out.
3,5/5. This book wasn’t for me. The humor, the action, the storyline were way too light (I know its middle grade, but even then...) for my taste. But I really think it might interest young reader, probably even more boys, to read because of the Fortnite elements and the huge interest that a lot of kids have for this game. A writer, who I don’t remember the name... sorry for that, has dome a similar thing with the Minecraft game and put that universe in book and has know some success. And if this book help or interest kids to read, I can’t go against that. Personal interest 2/5, potential 4/5, I’ll go with a fair 3,5/5.
This was definitely not my thing. Not only is the plot confusing, jumping around from place to place, but it was hard to get a handle on Paul, the seventeen-year-old protagonist, and why he thought he was somewhere he wasn't. Apparently, he thinks he's been cast for a small role in a movie, but he's actually part of a popular Survivor-type program. He keeps finding himself in bizarre situations where the same things happen. I couldn't understand why Ella, another competitor in this game, even chose to help him out. What about him out of all the other competitors made her feel compassion toward him? Although I wanted to quit reading this at a certain point, I pressed on, hoping my mind would change. It didn't. While I understand what was going on by the time the book concluded, I still felt frustrated and annoyed by how the story was told and wondered why anyone would care about this sort of thing. I prefer my characters to be much more developed than any of these are.
I received this book in exchange for my honest review.
So I love these books. Books written by Dustin Brady, Davidson, Cube Kid, all are exciting easy reads for tweens, both boys and girls. They’re fun, full of adventure, funny dialogue and character interactions and accompanied by great illustrations.
I think depending on the reader, spending time with this book and a parent is always a good way to encourage reluctant readers, while at the same time enriching parent/child quality time together. This is the scenario I’d place this book in.
Giving it to tween gamers may prove a greater challenge as I’m sure they’d get bored quickly with it. For every book, there’s a reader. They just have to find each other.
I love fortnite. So if you like it too then you should read this book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My son and I both enjoyed reading this book, so much so that he wants me to buy it when it comes out. If your child is into Fortnite, especially if you have a reluctant reader, I would recommend this book.
