8 books18 followersJulian Barr first fell in love with all things Greek and Roman in childhood, when he staged the epic tale of the Emperor Claudius using sock puppets. After his PhD in Classics, he did a brief stint as a schoolteacher, hated being called ‘sir,’ and dived into storytelling. Although he remains open to the possibilities of sock puppet theatre, historical fantasy is his passion. He has published scholarly research on Roman medicine and the gastronomic habits of Centaurs but prefers to think of himself as an itinerant bard. Ashes of Olympus: The Way Home is his debut novel.

Get lost in a world of magic, myth and monsters.
After reading the first chapter, I bought the whole series - certain I was on a winner.
This is a thoroughly engaging, well written fantasy for MG readers all the way through to adults. Dota is teen who has been raised by...well basically, monsters. She was found as a discarded babe in the woods by Modor and her young son Grethor and has spent her entire life underground in the caves they dwell in. Dota has little concept of what it means to be human and has been taught that humans are monsters who would hunt and kill her family. So when Dota winds up above ground in the realm of humans, she finds their world bewildering, begins to question everything she has been taught and finds herself on path that sets her at odds with the family she loves. Barr has deftly woven a story featuring gods, magic and Nordic myth. Be prepared this opening instalment will just whet your appetite for more.

What a beginning!
Loved this first installment of Tooth & Blade. It was gripping right from the start and continues opening into a rich world of myth and magic. I love Dotá and her inner turmoil as she learns the secret of what she is and begins to navigate a new world she’s never know. I can’t wait for the next!
