Death Pulls A Stake Out

Rate this book

Norma never chose to be a vampire, but she enjoys her undead life. She runs a profitable cleaning service which assists Seattle’s paranormal community by straightening up messy interactions with humans or each other. Norma owns a condo in Capitol Hill with very little natural sunlight. She loves movies, vampire friendly clubs, and playing board games with her ancestors at the Paper Flower Consortium, Seattle’s largest vampire coven.

A vampire is found staked in the hallway of the coven and panic sweeps through the community. When a second body is discovered, the coven’s chief of security is pressured to solve the case as quickly as possible. A vampire from her bloodline is implicated. Can Norma clean up this mess and find the real killer before they strike again?

I received this book as part of an ARC review. Norma was captured and turned as a 14-year-old girl without her consent. Her maker, Bill, faced sentencing and execution for his crimes. Bill's maker took over raising Norma when the coven debated killing her too. Norma was always referred to as the shame and didn't feel comfortable in the coven consortium. When a vampire is staked and thanks to Norma found in time to save him, Norma decides to stay to solve the crime. It is complicated by a thrall's death, a guy who wants to post on line real vampires and a thrall of a sleeping vampire. When her grandfather's second son, Ryan, is accused, Norma steps in and saves him to the outrage of the security officer, Marion. Norma convinces Marion to help solve the crime after another thrall is injured. Norma solves all the murders and attempted murder but the killer was unexpected. I won't give who the killer the was but I certainly didn't expect it. Norma despite being almost an outcast is spunky and will fight for what she believes in. I like to believe her actions in solving these crimes has given her more acceptance from the coven. Norma while not a normal vampire is certainly gifted in her own way.

This was a fun, quick mystery with a paranormal twist. I liked that Norma wasn’t afraid to be herself despite the overwhelming pressure for her to conform. I also liked that this experience may have shown the rest of her coven that she is worthy of respect.

I enjoyed the mystery in this book, and honestly didn’t figure out the would-be killer until just before Norma did. It may have been nice to get a fuller uderstanding of the various characters in the coven, or even a rundown of everyone there - Norma kept meeting with new members so frequently that I had a bit of an issue keeping track.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

I read this book in a full day and really enjoyed it. If you enjoy a book that includes murder, mystery, vampires, zombies and other paranormal characters then this is for you.

Norma is put to the test to find out who staked a coven member but everyone is against her because of the way she was turned but she takes on the challenges and proves that she is more than what everyone thought of her and prove them wrong.

The book could do with a final editing for a few little grammar and spelling mistakes.

This first book in the Norma's Cleaning Service series by Elizabeth Guizzetti was definitely a different mystery sleuthing story since it involved a young (in human years) vampire as the amateur detective. To me the book took a little too long to get to the really entertaining part of the story, but I encourage the readers to push past and they will not be disappointed in the solution. This is a voluntary review of an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from Hidden Gems Books.

Death Pulls A Stake Out by Elizabeth Guizzetti is a fast-paced paranormal fantasy that is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat never knowing what will happen next. A funny yet mysterious tale of a vampire who never knows what her life will be like from one day to the next. The characters are interesting and well-written. Death Pulls A Stake Out is a fun read

I really enjoyed this book. It's the first I have read from this author and would be quite happy to read more. There's a little humour, intrigue, murder, vampire's, and a "zombie" best friend. An easy read with a good storyline and great characters.

I had a very hard time with all the characters. It was so hard to keep track of who was who- vampire, offspring of which vampire, thralls... so when people were accused or in danger, I didn't really feel anything about it.
Normie and Carlos were cool.
