കുട്ട്യാലി മരയ്ക്കാരും,കുട്ടിപോക്കറും, പട്ടുമരയ്ക്കാരും, മുഹമ്മദ് മരയ്ക്കാരും അറബിക്കടലിലെഴുതിയ വീരേതിഹാസം പുനർ വായിക്കപ്പെടുകയാണ് കുഞ്ഞാലിത്തിരയിലൂടെ.

The scale of the novel is epic, starting with the arrival of Portuguese and their establishment as an important colonial force in India. In my history classes, Vasco da Gama had an exotic appeal, the first person from the civilized world to set foot in India. Only the British rule period was considered as the bad years for India, the Portuguese, French and Dutch arrival and assertions were only glossed over. It all changed for me with the malayalam movie Urumi, where Vasco da Gama was the villain, and this book goes further in detailing the cultural landscape of Kerala and the conflicts it faced with the arrival of the Portuguese forces.
The book starts with Pirard visiting Kunjali at a Goan jail in the year 1608. From there we go to flashback mode, with descriptions of how western import had changed the food habits of people. ചക്കയും മാങ്ങയും അല്ലാ, കപ്പൽ കടന്നെത്തിയ പപ്പായയും, ആത്തക്കയും, കൈതച്ചക്കയും, പേരയ്ക്കയും ആണ് നാട്ടുകാർക്ക് ഇപ്പോൾ കമ്പം, കുരുമുളകിന് പകരം ചുവന്ന മുളക് വറുത്തറയ്ക്കുന്ന പരിഷ്കാരം . The Portuguese landed at the Calicut (കാലിക്കൂത്) port and tried to establish business connections with the Samoothiri. When Samoothiri mentions that they don't need the goods brought by the Portuguese and hence cannot provide them pepper in exchange, Vasco Da Gama rages and captures some villagers then goes on to meet Kolathiri, Samoothiri's enemy. Thus starts the feud between the Portuguese and Samoothiri, that ultimately culminates in the new Samoothiri agreeing to trade with Portuguese and thus helping them establishing their colonial rule.
There are numerous characters who play important role in this story. Koya Pakki, the muslim trader who supports doing business with the Portuguese. Khwaja Qassim, the leader of the moors (muslim traders), who is against the Portuguese. Unni Godha Varma Rajavu, the Kochi king who sides with Portuguese. Chenacheri Kurup, the adviser to Kolothiri (Kannur Rajavu). Chinnaali, Kutty Ali, Muhammad Ali - the marakkars, lords of sea, who wage a fierce battle against the Portuguese navy.
Although the book starts interestingly with lots of historical characters and references, the plot becomes way too overlong, with constant jump in timelines and by the end I lost interest in the proceedings. For all its faults, this is a dense work of historical significance.

മാപിള്ളമാർ വസിക്കുന്ന ഇടം കുടി എന്നും, പുരയെന്നും അറിയപ്പെട്ടപ്പോൾ, നായർ പ്രമാണിയുടേത് ഇടത്തിൽ എന്നായി. തീയന്റേതു പുര, പുലയന്റെ ചാല, പറയന് ചേരി, കമ്മാളർക്കു കുടി, നമ്പൂതിരിമാരുടെ ഇല്ലം എന്നോ മനയെന്നോ അറിയപ്പെട്ടപ്പോൾ, വാര്യരുടേതു വാരിയം, പിഷാരടിമാർക്കു പിഷാരവും, നമ്പീശൻമാർക്കു പൂമഠവും ആയിരുന്നു.

കുഞ്ഞാലിമരയ്ക്കാറുടെ ജീവിതകഥ. അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻ്റെ ജനനം മുതൽ പറഞ്ഞു തുടങ്ങാതെ അതിനു മുൻപുള്ള ചരിത്രം മുതൽ വിശദമായി പറയുന്നു. കോഴിക്കോട്, കണ്ണൂർ, കൊച്ചി, ഗോവ, കൊളംബോ, പോർച്ചുഗൽ എന്നീ നാടുകളുടെ ചരിത്രത്തിനൊപ്പം കേരളം പറങ്കിപ്പടയ്ക്കെതിരെ കുഞ്ഞാലിമരയ്ക്കാരുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ നടത്തിയ കടൽ യുദ്ധങ്ങളും ഇതിൽ വിവരിക്കുന്നു. കറുത്ത സ്വർണം എന്നറിയപ്പെട്ട കുരുമുളകിനെ തേടി വന്നെത്തിയ പോർച്ചുഗീസുകാരുടെ കണ്ണിൽ തിളങ്ങിയത് അധികാരമോഹം ആയിരുന്നു. ഇതിനെതിരെ നടത്തിയ പോരാട്ടം അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നതോടൊപ്പം പിറന്ന നാടിനെ ഒറ്റുകൊടുത്ത അധികാര പ്രമാണിത്തത്തിന്റെ ദുർമുഖങ്ങളെയും തുറന്നു കാണിക്കുന്നു.
