Everything a detective novel should be—gripping, clever, and filled with deep characters.
Detective Kacy Lang wasn’t surprised when the body of her twin brother washed up from the icy depths of the Chicago River. She’d known since the day she graduated from the academy that one day he’d wind up on her beat, and she’d have to arrest him… or kill him. She could accept the fact he’d been murdered. What she couldn’t accept was the massive torture he’d endured before his death. Someone would pay for that.
A multilayered, fast-paced archaeological dig of a mystery.
In this start of a new crime fiction series, the reader is introduced to Detective Kacy Lang and her partner, Dave Capello. They are called out to investigate a body that was found in the Chicago River. Not so surprisingly, the body was that of her twin brother's.
No, she's not hardhearted, her brother got into drugs and crime years ago. She hasn't seen or heard from here in several years. She has always known that she would have to arrest him or shoot him. What really upsets her is the fact that he was tortured before being killed.
But his isn't he only body to be found. His girlfriend, his best friend have both been murdered, with their housing torn to shreds. Someone is looking for something ... and they haven't found whatever it is. Kacy and Dave have an idea that one of them will be next and the killing will continue until they get what they want.
This looks to be a promising series ... with credible and likeable characters. Kacy and Dave have been partners for years ... they are like a family unit. They can spar like siblings, but when it comes down to it, they have each others' backs.
Kacy's back story is quite interesting ... having adoptive parents that seem to have no love for her and never knowing her birth parents have led to a trust issue. Kacy's also been a survivor of a serial killer a couple of years ago and she's worked very hard to get through that particular trauma in her life. She still has flashbacks from time to time and only her partner know that tidbit.
It's well-written with lots of action and several twists and turns along the way. I look forward to reading the second in this series ... DISHONORABLE DEATH.
Many thanks to the author / Special Arc Group (FB) for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

Wow! What an amazing thriller this is, from the opening paragraph this book dragged me along until the very fast page.
Kacy Lang arrives at the scene of a murder to learn the victim is her twin brother who she has lost contact with over the years because of the difference paths they took.
Kacy is off the case, as she should be but she and her partner Dave Capello are mavericks and decide to do some unofficial digging into who wanted Kyle dead.
I loved the first book in this series by Linda, who is a super talented author. The characters are so different to any of the other characters she's written but they work so well together.
I truly can't wait to get the second book in this refreshingly new series in my grubby little hands.
Highly recommended to anyone who loves thrillers that are page turners.
When Kacy and her partner Dave are called to investigate a murder, little does she know what, and who, the investigation will uncover. The murder victim is her twin brother and there was a lot about his life she knew nothing about.
I really enjoyed this story. The pacing was spot on, the partnership between Kacy and Dave worked really well and the developments in the investigation were interesting. My two favourite characters were Dave (the man's stomach is a bottomless pit,) and Simon, aka 'Mouse' - a reformed character whose intentions were good and who was afraid of the consequences of them.
So many American crime thrillers seem to be led by drunken, unshaven, shoot-a-gun-at-any-given-opportunity types of detectives. This one however gets you rooting for the detectives, and even hoping that things work out OK for one of the 'not-so-good' guys.
I've read a couple of books by this author but, after loving this new series opener, I think I need to go back and check out more of her back catalogue. It had everything I need to make a good book a great read, delivered in a no nonsense way. Brilliant! Det Kacy Lang is shocked when the body of her twin brother Kyle is washed up on shore. I say shocked, not necessarily by his death, that came as little surprise given some of his life choices. No, her shock was mostly for how much he appeared to have been tortured before being killed. Obviously, as she is related to the deceased, once they ID him she will be taken off the case but, until they do, she has a couple of leads to check out herself first. Luckily, her partner Dave Capello trusts her and has her back. It soon becomes obvious that someone is looking for something and isn't going to let anyone get in their way. With the body count rising rapidly, can Kacy and Dave get to the bottom of things and bring the perps to justice? Well, this hit the ground running and didn't let up until the very end. The author took me on a twisty turney ride through some really gritty drama. Just when I thought I might have it all figured out she went and spun me round and sent me off somewhere else. All flowing nicely I hasten to add. With the case being very close to home for Kacy, we learn a lot about her and her background. Also, being as this case is personal, we also learn that she is a bit of a maverick - do love me one of them! But she rubs along very well with her partner, they have a great relationship. almost like family. Other characters are just as well described and all play their parts well. The plot is intriguing and, as I said, had me running round like a headless chicken at times. It's a bit dark in places but all that is contained is justified rather than glorified. As we got closer to the end, it all came together nicely and flowed well to its conclusion. All in all, a cracking series opener that fully satisfied and left me hankering for the next book. Can't wait...
What a terrific story! Troubled Detective Kacy Lang arrives at a murder scene with her partner, Dave Capello, and stares in shock. The victim is her fraternal twin, Kyle. Despite their estrangement, seeing his brutally murdered body still fills Kacy with remorse, and though she’s off the case because of the family connection, she goes rogue to find out who killed him. What follows are surprising twists and turns, drugs, kidnappings, missing children, and more murders. The action is nonstop, and the relationship between Kacy and Dave is special; they are protective and look out for each other. This thriller has wonderful characterizations, and is guaranteed to keep you frantically flipping pages. Very exciting! Now to download the next in this fabulous series.
It’s fair to say I’ve been in a book slump recently. I’d read a really brilliant book and after that, nothing I picked up compared to it...until I got my hands on this beauty!
Honourable Death sucked me in and caught me hook, line and sinker! From the first page I was living the story and it’s genuinely one of those books you don’t want to put down. I was on holiday when I got the book so I was able to devour it in almost one sitting!
We meet Detective Kacy Lang right at the beginning when she attends a murder scene, only to learn the victim is her twin brotherhood er. We know right from that page that she’s kick ass and will stop at nothing when she has an aim in sight.
This is the first on a brand new series by Linda Prather and I for one can’t wait for the next book. Prather does a brilliant job with the characterisation. They have real substance and i really feel that i know them and I love that! There are twists and turns galore, book one is one heck of a roller coaster ride, I’m stopping on board for the next instalment! Five stars from purplebookstand!
What a start to a new series! Detective Kacy Lang and her partner Dave Capello find the body of a man who has been tortured and murdered, he turns out to be Kacy’s twin brother, Kyle. Kacy & Dave are in a race against time to work out what’s going on and not end up dead too. Kidnappings, missing children, black market baby sales and murdered police officers make this to be a riveting read. Great characters with brilliant senses of humour. A complex but great plot to unfold. Looking forward to reading more in this series
This author has weaved her magic once again, in a highly engrossing book. I've definitely been hanging onto the edge of my seat wondering which way this story was going to turn. Just when I thought I'd solved the plot line, the characters changed around & Detective Kacy Lang & her partner Dave Capello were off tracking down another trail. This book has definitely left me gasping for more. Can't wait for the next in this terrific series.
Wow what a brilliant book ease to follow and flows well. The twists and turns along the way I didn't guess what was happening. The main characters are relatable and I love the relationship between them. Can't wait to read the rest of series would recommend to anyone who loves crime with twists. Thank you Linda x
A superb book from start to finish. I can honestly say it is, possibly, my favourite book written by this author! For me, it had everything! The pace of it was brilliant and I hated having to put it down as each chapter left me wanting more. The suspense and intrigue together with the raw emotion was just brilliant.
What a fantastic book! No one could ask for more from this book, in my opinion it has everything. Great story and great characters, looking forward to reading more in the series. Congratulations Linda S Prather, another brilliant read .
Kacy Lang the murder scene and finds it is her twin brother Kyle She cannot make and decision anything she has to be told not to do it. But Kacy being Kacy has to find out what happened to Kyle I had an ARC
Honourable death by Linda S Prather. A fantastic read with great characters. Loved Kacy and Dave characters. Lots of action too. Loved the story. Loved the ending. Cant wait to read book 2. Highly recommended. 5*. Would give more if I could.
Thank you to the author for the Advanced Reader Copy. This is the start of a brand new series by one of my favourite authors. The main characters are great. The story in the first book is top of the line with so much going for it. It shows Kacy Lang and her screwed up family life. The basic gist is her twin brother is found murdered and she who is not what you would call close to her brother must then find out what happened. It brings her back to her family which she seems to be trying to avoid even going so far as to change her last name slightly. Kacy is a strong character which is great to see and her relationship with her partner Dave is very entertaining as she seems to almost have him as a brother who they like to annoy each other.
I like the cover for this one. Very captivating. The characters are engaging to say the least. I enjoyed the interaction between Detective Kacy Lang and her partner Dave. When she would step out of line, Dave knew exactly how to bring her back to reality. The story centers around her brother, Kyle whose body washed up on the shore. He was tortured beyond belief before he died. Kacy wasn’t surprised he wound up dead based on his past activities in the drug world, but he was her brother and she wants to bring his killer(s) to justice. The read is very fast-paced and that is part of the problem. It almost moves too fast not allowing all the characters to be thoroughly fleshed out. There are some scenes that just don’t make any sense. IE In this scene, In Chapter four there is a chase and ensuing shoot out. One minute Kacy is taking cover behind the car door and the next thing, she’s running down one of the thugs. How did that happen? Did I mention people are dying all over the place and yet there are no witnesses? This at times, became far-fetched. Chapter Forty-five is the one where everything comes together and we find out who is behind all the killings. I’m sorry, but it was a big fizzle because somehow, her partners wind up in the basement and take down the bad guys/girls. I’m not going to say as some reviewers have, that the plot isn’t plausible but as I stated in the beginning, a lot of the story was too rushed for my tastes. A little more time and this would be a four if not five star saga. As is, three stars.
This book was a roller coaster of a ride with a lot going on but some brilliant writing to keep you reading to the end if you are like me and want to know how the book ends!
Detective Kacy Lang and her partner Detective Dave Capello have accepted a call just minutes before the end of their shift. There has been a body washed up from the Chicago River. Now that Kacy has seen the body she wishes that she had listened to her partner and missed the call.
The body has been tortured and she doesn't need the ME or any other ID to identity the body as she recognises the small skull tattoo above the left ankle. Its her twin brother Kyle who she hasn't seen in ages. She says to Dave about leaving the scene and explains its her brother so they are off the case.
The book gets more intriguing from here and I must admit I was not disappointed by this book at all. I have not read the first book and I will now do so as I enjoyed this one so much. Also, I will look into reading more of this author.
This Review is so very hard to write because, I truly believe and want to do this book the justice it deserves and share the #booklove. This is the introduction to the Detective Kacy Lang series. Kacy is called to the crime scene to find the murder victim by the water of the Chicago river which unsurprising turns out to be her twin brother. Due to police rules she can’t legally work the case but that doesn’t stop her from investigating privately with her partner Dave Capello.
She has always known she would have to bury or arrest her brother one day as they went there separate ways. She become a Detective and he got into drugs and into the criminal world etc everything, she was fighting against.
Kacy is a character you instantly take a liking to, she is feisty, brave, strong, incredibly clever. She will stop at nothing to get justice even if it is risky, or she's at risk. She will think nothing of breaking the rules if she has too.
Dave is incredibly sweet, and he's like a big brother and family to Kacy. Always has her back, no matter what. They are the perfect team, if there ever was one.
This is an outstanding book to start of this series. It is jammed packed full of action, twists and turns and drama on every single level. It truly is an incredible clever plot and story. It just gets deeper and grittier. I don't think, I breathed and my head was spinning although the book. It just gets better and better. Linda's writing style is wonderful. It's easy and it just flows and flows. Honestly, I read this within 4 hours. I started as soon as I received the book and did not put it down until I had finished. Linda has quickly become another favourite author of mine and I'm yet to read her other books but I'm in no doubt they will be equalling as good. ( damn TBR list lol ) If you think this book knocks it out of the park, wait till you read the next one oh boy oh boy completely knocks this book out of the park... this series gets better and better. I would personally like to thank Linda for the ARC and also The Special Arc Group for the all the wonderful books, chats etc.
Honorable Death by Linda S Prather. (Detective Kacy Lang Book 1) We meet detective Kacy Lang and her partner detective Dave Capello at the scene of a body recovered from the river. It turns out to be Kacy's estranged twin brother Kyle, who has been tortured and murdered. His childhood friend Simon is also in danger. Kacy's adoptive parents Kurt and Katherine may or may not be involved. So begins a fast paced crime thriller with an interesting plot and some unexpected twists. This is a stand alone book, but it is billed as the first book in a series, so I expect some of the personal story of Detective Kacy Lang to continue in the next books. According to amazon.com: Book 2 is Dishonorable Death. Book 3 is Justifiable Death. Book 4 Heartless Intent.
A fair read. Entertaining. Couldn't fault it and the premise was good with interesting characters, hence my 3* rating. But, it didn't really grab me. Not sure why. I didn't get that buzz I would expect when reading a crime thriller. Can't put my finger on it. It certainly had pace and plenty of action with an intriguing plot. A little hard to follow in some places which caused a brief loss of attention. (I was probably just confused) Possibly the writing style was the reason. Who knows! but I will certainly have a stab at another book by this author and see how it goes. I could be overwhelmed!
Excellent who done it! Wonderful characters. Very compelling story of a female detective and her partner hunting for her brother's killer. So many twists and turns, you're falling out of your seat looking around the corners waiting for the next clue to fall. Illegal adoptions, trafficking and murder. Extremely well written and the plot is so well laid out. Just when you think you have it figured out, it changes and just pulls you in again. Loved it. Very well done, author.
A police woman is determined to bring those responsible for the brutal murder of her drug addict brother to justice. Little does she know her investigation will uncover a vicious criminal enterprise with tentacles close to home.
This book is okay. Completely unrealistic that they would let Kacy investigate . The actions are over the top and the ending is unbelievably saccharin. The writing is not bad and the pace is fast.
Was recommended by a fellow avid reader and I'm so glad I followed their advice. The book starts with the murder of Kacy's twin brother. As Kacy tries to find his killer, her and her partner get deeper into the world of drugs, kidnapping and child stealing. Fabulous read with everyone suspecting each other and trusting no one
I've read many books, some I leave comments on..some I don't. The writing of this book was excellent! Some humor... The writer did a fantastic job of writing about commentary about the two partners, just a must read. It will keep the reader wanting more! Please don't pass this book up!
I loved this book. I've become a fan Prather's writing and each story I try to figure out who did what for what reason. The author has a way of tossing in a wrench you don't see coming. There's nothing better than hiding in plain sight. As with any murder/mystery book, murder does happen, and there some graphic scenes written within. I loved the book.
Interesting characters and partnership. The action and intrigue will keep you reading when you should be doing something else. I immediately bought book 2 and look forward to enjoying it as much as I did the 1st book.
I r÷ad this book in one sitting. Was impossible for me to put down. The characters have real depth and I feel like I truly know them. Excellent imagination and writing skills!! Love this author.
