It's the equivalent of scrolling through Pinterest for generic inspiration but with less instructions.

Thank you Macmillan for this book in exchange for an honest review

During this weird and odd time were people find their mental health fading, it’s always good to remind yourself of the little things and the importance of keeping yourself healthy and therefore looking after your mental health.
Pete gives great points for looking after your wellbeing, for instance, drinking plenty of water and why the body needs water and the benefits of water. Some of the anecdotes, did make me snort as a minimal wage earner, I know that I cannot afford a lot of the notes he suggest (so my broke ass did snort with laughter). But others life notes I found enjoyable and realistic to a modern lifestyle. Heal is a quick read to work on your overall health and during this time, I recommend it as a read.

I found this book in my bargain bin of one of my local stores here in New Zealand after what has been a difficult year health-wise for me. I recognise Pete as one of the presenters from My Kitchen Rules but as I don’t watch it regularly I don’t know much about him but know that he has coped his share of flack in the media recently.

I enjoyed this book. There are pages jammed filled with simple ways of looking after oneself. While some concepts are familiar, others may not be and it gives the reader an opportunity to open the book up at any given page rather than read it from start to finish. It’s a wonderful reminder teaching us to slow down and take stock of our lives and each page shares lovely photography of Pete and his family embracing life by applying the seven principles he uses to guide us through the book.

Sure some may find these helpful tips on great places like Pinterest, but I think it would make a lovely gift for the self, for those wishing to re-evaluate their life and gain a more healthier lifestyle and for just being able to cope in this world that is often on the go. Sometimes it takes a book to show us what we can do to help us in our journey.

Love unconditionally

“To love unconditionally is to open your heart and to others, without expectation. It is to trust that life will always give you what you need”. Page 225

I listened to the audio of this book. It gives a multitude of short (about one-paragraph) points regarding health issues. These include: different foods that are good or bad for you, drinking water, exercise, sex, and many many more.

Pete gives anecdotes from his own life and practices for most of the points. Some of them I thought were complete poppycock and others I already knew (like why the body needs water) and it was a good reminder to be more mindful about my health, particularly in terms of the need to move the body.

Some of the points are only applicable to people who have the resources (money) to live life like a celebrity chef and others are applicable to everyone (such as the benefits of laughing).

This was a quick listen and I'd recommend it (listen to or read) to anyone looking for a few simple take-aways to improve their health - everything in the book will NOT be applicable to everyone, but there will be at least something in there that will make you think about your health.

My review is simply from my perspective because I hoped for a little more depth. It's a simple, easy to read guide that almost reads like a series of short blog posts, for anyone who is looking to adopt a healthier lifestyle. However, those who already hold similar health views in terms of eating well, being open minded to mindfulness practices and various perhaps slightly 'alternative' means of looking after ourselves, I don't think will learn anything new here.

So apparently changing the way you eat, exercise, rest, breathe, meditate, write, colour, etc. can make you healthier. I think the title is a bit inaccurate because it's not quite about healing - also I have no idea if that was 101. The 4/5 review is mostly because the audiobook is narrated by the author so yay! comforting Aussie accent.

This is a coffee table book. I heard most of all this elsewhere, but the few pages on breathing techniques were helpful.
