I'm Jonathan, a husband, father, and writer. I write because that's what I was born to do and I love doing it. Because of the support from awesome people like you, I get to do it full-time.
“This brave new world was built for animals, not men. That’s okay with me; I am an animal. I’ve accepted that.” This is a short but intense prequel and and has piqued my curiosity enough to start the series with Dropship #1. The protagonist, Daniel Hunt, is a brooding, without a past mercenary, a no nonsense tough guy. I’m totally snagged!
Set in the city of Dome, Inception introduces MC Daniel (Danny) Hunt; hired as security 'centurion' at local bar Zero Gravity, he keeps customers happy and at peace to enjoy their refreshments of choice - that is until a rival bar owner head-hunts him and won't take no for an answer! Amnesiac Danny has PTSD and no recollection of his previous life before arriving in Dome and working for Ma, the owner of Zero Gravity, so his curiosity is piqued when a blind girl at the local market says she can reveal his past. Hoping to dispel the 'flashback' nightmares that have dogged him, Danny follows and is amazed at what she tells him to do to find his destiny. As things start to make sense, Danny begins to work at Tombs' bar The Half Moon, against his better judgement.
This prequel to Jonathan Yanez' Forsaken Mercenary series continues with Dropship, Book 1 in this military urban fantasy - get it now for it's a winner you'll love!
Entertaining enough - what little there was of it. Even for a brief introductory short piece, this was very insubstantial. Let me put it this way: If I didn't already have the first book in the series, this wouldn't have been sufficient motivation for me to want to go get it.
Interesting short story introduction to a new series and hopefully the main character - Daniel Hunt. Jonathan provide a good character study of who Daniel is in the present, but reveals that he is a man without a past - at least a memory of his past. I'm looking forward to reading Dropship, the first book of the series.
Sorry, I could not figure out if it was in the past, present or future. The tense was jumping all around. Sometimes I will put up with it if the content looks interesting, but this one did not interest me so I only finished a few pages.
As I have recently found out, I already listened to the actual part 1 of this Forsaken Mercenary series, which I rated only 2 stars and which apparently had made me decide not to continue the series. That was about 2 years ago so I had forgotten all about that book and started listening to this short story today thinking it was the start of a completely new series in my collection.
And what a great little story it was! Entertaining, a likeable main character, some nice action scenes and a mystery to be solved. Narration: awesome.
It made me want to buy part 1 of this series immediately - only to discover I already owned it and had deemed it subpar. What a wasted opportunity, if only the series had been written more like this prequel…
Inception: Forsaken Mercenary is an introductory story about a man who has no idea who he is. His memories only go back 5 years and after that nothing. He lives in a future world where humankind has abandoned Earth because they messed it up so bad. (I see the basis for a sequel here!). Our hero works as a bouncer in a futuristic Lunar colony, and he is very good at it. There are human settlements on Luna and Mars but they are only for the well-to-do.
This story seems realistic, in view of human nature. People will always be selfish, shortsighted and such. It is just enough to whet my appetite for more.
This is basically an introduction to a space-crime-gangster series (I guess) based on a lunar colony. Reasonable writing and character development in a long short story, but not really compelling to me -- a super space bar bouncer with a mysterious past might be interesting as a backstory, but it's cliche and simplistic enough that since you don't learn anything else about the main character in the story, I don't feel any compulsion to read the main story/series involving this character.
The most disappointing part of this book was its length. That said, the author did a great job in introducing a character in a short story with an ending that left things open for continuance but also allowed the story to end.
I enjoyed the story and liked the mystery elements (main character with an unknown past) that were introduced. I’d continue with the series.
Yanez, Jonathan. Inception. Forsaken Mercenary No. 0.5.Kindle, 2019.Inception is a separately published short story to introduce Yanez's Mercenary series. Basically, it is the movie Road House movie to the Moon. You can picture Patrick Swayze with tats in the starring role. Note there is also an audiobook edition available.

3.5 it is well written and flows well. The main character is written well and it makes you want to continue into the rest of the books to follow his character development.
