Not sure this says White dolphin as well they are different books!

Skyhawk
I have fallen in love with Gill Lewis' books. The eco-friendly subject of them is amazing. The characters believable. The first I read was Swan Song, it was on the desk of a Y5 boy and he had borrowed t from the local library. i read it over break and lunch - and promptly purchased one for school. I carried on, Eagle Warrior, Song of the River, A Streetdog named Pup, Moon Bear....i picked up Sky Hawk and White Dolphin (still on TBR pile) in charity shops recently (sorry but school TAs don't earn a lot and these are in perfect condition!) All the books are stunning even if difficult to read at times (what some humans will do to animals is hard to fathom).

Sky Hawk is set around Callum's family farm. Callum is , his friends are Rob and Euan and they love cycling around the hills on the farm. One day they spy Iona McNair, a girl they don't really like (but also don't know very well) catch a fish from the river with her hands. Rob and Euan shout at her, but Callum is feeling sorry for her and when she runs off without her fleece and trainers, he doubles back to find her.

This one act puts in place a series of events as Callum and Iona become friends due to Iona telling Callum a secret - there are ospreys nesting at the loch on the farm. They watch them and call for help when the female osprey (Iris) is in trouble.

But when Iona doesn't turn up for a sleepover at the treehouse Callum goes to her house - the first time he's been there - she lives with her Grandad. She isn't well - summer flu her Grandad says - but as he leaves she asks him to look after Iris....

Callum finally has the secret of the ospreys taken out of his hands. He is on a boat with his friends while Euan fishes, Callum has seen Iris' mate but they haven't but they soon do! It is now their secret too. From the loch they track Iris' journey to Africa. This begins a whole new mission to ask for and give help.

Will Iris make it back to her mate and their eerie on the loch? What happens in Africa?

An amazing story of the need to support and protect our wildlife. But also a story of friendship and acceptance. Love it.

The first part of this book is about Callum and his friends Robert and Euan. Scotland is a great place for boys to fish, ride bikes and play football. At school that's what they do.

On Callum's farm, they meet a girl on the river. She's catching fish by hand. That makes her a nutter as the water is freezing. Iona McNair has just returned to her birthplace to live with her frail grandfather. Her mother is not living there.

Callum and Iona become friends. They share a secret no one else must know. They are protecting an Osprey that is building an eerie on the island in the river. Iona knows more about the land Callum lives on than he does.

They share the joy of watching the male Osprey attract a mate. Iona calls her Iris. They watch as they lay eggs. The local ranger Hamish helps them rescue Iris when she becomes tangled in fishing wire. They still keep the secret, only now Callum's parents know too. Iona always seemed to know what was going to happen before it did. She asked Callum to look after Iris.

The second half of the book is equally engaging. Callum watches Iris's progress in her migration to Africa. He had helped Hamish put on the sat-nav device so they could follow her. Rob and Euan join Callum in his daily search for the beautiful Osprey. When the signal drops out in Africa in the swamps where she could die. Callum sends email messages out to see if anyone can search for Iris.
That's when friendships develop from across the globe. The town in Scotland becomes involved in helping a girl in Africa needing medical attention she can't get there.

This is a book about friendship, finding a passion for nature, learning to accept loss, and growing to feel deeply about other people. I loved this book.

I read Sky Hawk in one day. That's one day, with meal and refreshment breaks. It is so uplifting.
