欢迎来到噩梦游戏 I [Welcome to the Nightmare Games 1]
QiLeren had just cleared the bad ending of «The Nightmare Games» when his laptop died well before its time. His luck seemed to follow him as he was transported, along with the other passengers, to a hospital following an accident between his bus and a truck. Upon waking in a transfusion hall rather than a ward, QiLeren felt a familiar sense of dread as he took in the hospital that held no trace of other people…

July 14, 2021Aaaaaaaaghghdskajdfsasfjlka; This story was so rough and I'm hesitant to give it a rating because when it was on, it was ON FIRE and I was loving it and it caused me so much delicious, delicious emotional pain but when it was off, it was really off and there's some pieces of it I really did not like. I actually DNF'd this one the first time I started it, around the beginning of the second arc, because I couldn't tolerate the combination of misogyny and thoughts that this was going to be another "steel straight man in denial" story. I gave it a second go, much later, because there were so many good reviews of it and had a much better reaction to it but I still have complaints.
So... to get my problems out of the way, right away. The misogyny and transmisogyny in this story is real. And according to a later translator, gets worse in the second book. This is really frustrating because there's some wonderful female characters in this book and it's really disorienting because every time you're in Qi Leren's head or hearing the comments of any of the male characters (which for the record, the main cast is all male) it's rough. I loved Xue Yingying in the first arc and then to turn around and have Qi Leren, stuck in a female body for the second arc, spend the whole time bitching about how much it sucked to be a woman because they're so weak and pathetic and so on and so forth was... infuriating. There's also a predatory lesbian in the second arc. And also, I really hate Doctor Lu. I'm pretty sure I'm supposed to find him a cute and adorable character and he encourages the relationship between Qi Leren and Ning Zhou to develop, but at the same time, his encouragement comes off more as "delighting in someone else's misery" and he's so fucking obnoxious, especially in the way that he's constantly pushing Qi Leren into the dangerous situations because of his ability and digging pits for him and any fun he brings in is instantly drained because he will backpedal violently if any of his jokes get turned on him. He could've died in this first book and I would've given zero fucks. I may've even delighted in it.
YMMV heavily on whether or not any of the above is a problem and while it was frustrating to deal with it, the rest of this book is soo damned good that it can be seen past.
For one, the first arc was genuinely one of the best horror arcs I think I've ever experienced in these stories. I was genuinely concerned for how the characters were going to deal with these situations and survive. I was tense with them and every time Qi Leren experienced a death scene, I was on the edge of my seat, because his save/load feature, which could've easily been a broken ability, had so many limitations and restrictions on it, that it took some extremely clever maneuvering to use it properly, and unlike some stories I've read where the character has the ability to "survive" a death scene, Qi Leren is obviously dealing with some psychological trauma from dying repeatedly. It probably could've been a bit better developed or explored, but I understand why it wasn't. Also, this arc almost tricked me into believing that SuHe was the ML.
Secondly, while I recoiled from the idea of it at first, and I could complain for days about the instalove part of it, the emotional drama of Qi Leren and Ning Zhou both struggling with the fact that they fell in love with each other while believing they were women and then finding out that they were men and trying to reconcile that with the fact that they're both straight was actually really well done, especially when you include the very traditionally Catholic mindset that Ning Zhou was raised with.
All of this culminating in THAT ENDING, one big twist of which I guessed and was extremely validated to be right about but just the way that ended... the set up... everything was perfectly constructed for some really good emotional drama and it was both very satisfying and made me desperately want to read the next book because oh my god.
Anyway, I really want to say this book was one of my favorites of this year. I did have some serious feels. But at the same time, when the book was dragging, it really dragged, and there were some genuinely infuriating parts. I recommend it with the caveat that it is not, at all, perfect.

i started this book bc i wanted something similar to kaleidoscope of death and it rly didn't disappoint at all! the first arc was really well written and it kept me on the edge of my seat at every turn. the second arc is what decides whether you continue or drop it, bc imo the mc's thoughts are a little bit like a high school teenager having his first crush and it was hard to read without cringing. i pushed through it and my god the ending shocked me so much i actually cried a bit. their love is so bittersweet in this book since it's the first of many, but it was definitely worth it.

The manhua version reeled me in, and I enjoyed reading the first 37 chapters of it! (will read the rest later lol!)
Now, I'm reading the novel version on WuxiaworldEU because it seems super interesting and complex and I want to see MC and ML interact more? So far, I'm on chapter 17 of the novel, the first arc, and it makes me chuckle aloud and think, 'well damn.' Can't wait to read the rest of the FIRST NOVEL AND IT'S 132 CHAPTERS!!! YAY!!!
Qi Leren is a cutie lmao <3

nothing really stands out here. it's a very very average read. a really short average read?
like it's too much of an average of a novel to have that much hype and 4.4 rating on NU, not surprised at the general taste tho. i'm not sure what butchered my experience. i'm not gonna go around blaming the translation though i do have to say i preferred sigma's over quazar's obviously. the first arc was decent and exciting and with sigma's translation, u definitely want to keep reading. their translation style flows well and reads very nicely and it's just the beginning of the novel, so u want to actually read it, yk?
the second arc is a major make and break point, it's either u get over the incredible 180 degree cringe turn in our protagonist's personality (which goes away in third arc bc reasons (sike) so yeah? lmao?) and make through it to the next arc or u drop it. i'm one of those ppl who did the former and read to the end and i don't really regret my reading experience tbh but i sure am a lil bit disappointed because i am a victim of those hyped reviews.
the protagonist is pretty nice like he's just some guy who accidently got into the Nightmare World. he's not op, he's just some guy who is decent at logical reasoning and has a good amount of bad luck. too bad the author doesn't seem to care about the characters that much, it's like they are just there and do not have any volume? the names are dropped, they play their part and they are discarded (in the most loose sense) i don't think i care about a single person in this novel, no one has any chemistry with anyone. even tho conceptually i love some of the ideas. i don't know why certain characters exist (the setup of them is there, they could be sexy but noooo the author does not do characters justice) and even if they do exist for future plot purpose in the subsequent sequels.......i mean it's fine but at least the protagonist should have some emotional worth for the reader but um. null here, baby?
ah like ykw it was pretty fine during arc 1 and then arc 2 happens and if that amount of simping over a goddess doesn't make u cringe, the world-building should. the ideas, the plot, the instances, the writing -- it's nice. it's pretty nice, it makes u want to read and continue till the end until u are like, hold on? is that it about the world? like the instance dulls the world itself, u barely get to hold hand with the world. now i know it's unlimited flow and i also enjoy instances. i love violence and horror thats why i am here but why is that element so underutilized. the juggle between delving into the world as a real demonic world vs it being a is soo not done well. the heart is there, the execution isn't. so consider me a lil disappointed bc i loveee a good isekai novel. there is barely any vividity to the world and i don't appreciate that. it's a missed opportunity bc i find the heart of the novel interesting and it's a tetralogy, the author is pretty decent i hope it gets better? just saying tho i dont have much hope considering the writing style nd just the general writing structure.
like the writing does make u cringe a lot? the second arc was really hard to get through and it sort of gets worse as u go further and theres a good amount of casual transmisogyny, misogyny and (religious here) homophobia -- which i am always prepared for bc it's an asian novel but man here the writing makes it a headache to read through im ngl. i usually drop these kind of novels with that kind of writing but the instances here are really good and i love a good brain storming over why/how over quests. so yeah, okay-ish read but oh man, the disappointment is real bc it features some concepts i really like and they are not done well. ;-;

3.8⭐
Good. Idk how I read this so fast. It hooked me ig.
Didn't expect the christianity aspect of this, and I was worried about how the final message was gonna be conveyed, but I actually really enjoyed it.
The end wasn't as surprising, because I had that bitch CLOCKED💅 (uh huh, i see you bitches that shipped them, i get it but at the same time shame on yall it was obvious), but I LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEDDD THE ANGSTT YEAHHH GIVE ME ALL YOU GOTTTT
The transmisogyny in this is a pity tho, because it has the potential to become a favourite of mine (mainly because of Ning Zhou, he's becoming one of my favourite MLs).
Also, fucking HATE when authors do the "nono he's a straight guy, he's just bent" LIKE COME ONNNNNNN BE FOR FUCKING REAL WITH ME RIGHT NOW, those two motherfuckers *points infuriatingly hard to Leren and Zhouzhou's noses* are fucking pansexual FOR GOD'S (ha!) SAKEEE
It just strikes me as queerphobic idk
anyway, now i'm debating between starting the second one or doing my duty as student and studyingggg
laterz ig

I did not like this
First arc was really good and actually scary but then it all just kinda went downhill.
If I remeber correctly it also had a lot of problematic things In it, not slay

Such mixed feelings.... I didn't hate it but I didn't love it either. There are good things and bad things...
As many people before me, I almost stopped reading during the second arc. The drop of the MC IQ was too brutal and the plot seemed derailed. As suggested by other reviewers I kept on reading and the quality didn't go back to the rather high standar set by the first arc but it became better so at least there was improvement.
My biggest "problem" is that the writing (or the translation) was subpar. The author planned this to be a long game (4 books) hence the little foreshadowings and slow burn, so far so good but and this is a big BUT there's so much that the author left out and the worst part is, the author notes say that she didn't even outlined the second book yet! (yet meaning the moment she ended the first book, I believe we already have the third with only the forth missing) This is not a tetralogy because of the high content value but because the author just wanted to! So she is deliberately under developing her book in order to make it longer. To me, this is unacceptable.
This sadist author plants all kind of seeds and the only one with a smidge of evolution is the insta-love-turned-into-straight-guys-must-bend-first- one. Which is nonsense! Because this insta love is built on the dumest misunderstanding. (The IQ of the MC was on vacation for the entirety of this arc).
I don't even want to read the second book. The cliffhanger doesn't feel that cliffy. Its just another misunderstanding. I feel bad for Ning Zhou... He had to be written into this novel. The only highligh of this book tho.
Oh and the horror of this book is Nonexistent . The author thinks that gore and horror are the same, they're not. This novel has a lot of gore but no horror perse. Mostly because the author (or translator) failed in atmosphere setting. The elements are the there but the execution is... Yep, on vacation too. Everything is missing except the misunderstandings and lack of information.
The more I write the madder I get and the more I want to give this cero stars....... Anyway 2.5 rounded up because Ning Zhou is best boi and even with all the complaining I did this is still and IF novel and I'm a sucker for this subgenre.

Yet another review I'm e̶d̶i̶t̶i̶n̶g̶ deleting because it's too painful to look at :')
I really liked this when I read it (about 2 years ago) but if I were to read it now, let's be real, I would not for the life of it make it past the 2nd arc. It was honestly just so painful - even more so than my old review, lol.
