The Hero Complex

Rate this book
Eden’s the name, and hero-ing is my game.

Well, sort-of...I try, but honestly, I’m just not that good at it. This whole hero gig is a lot harder than it looks!

It seems my latest ‘mishap’ has finally pushed Boss Man over the edge. Not only do I have just one more chance to earn my Hero title for real this time, but it’s also my last shot before they reclassify me as a Villain!

I guess it’s time to Hero-up!

Both fun and funny. It’s a good combo.

This review is going to be as short as this book. So at 88 pages all I need to say is;

If you’re stuck for something new to read at 8 O’clock at night and need something quick but well written. This is the one you want .
Over the top silly and hilarious. I think Eden is my spirit animal.

Hot scenes and characters that have personality... for such a short book that’s worth a round of applause

This was such a fun and quick read! I loved it. If it would have been longer with more of a plot, I probably would have given it 5 stars but at 88 pages, I'm impressed with the result. I will definitely read more from these authors in the future.

Eden has a zero care factor for most things in life, except donuts. She attracts bad luck and has a little trouble meeting her good deed quota, which makes for a rather hilarious hero and some shockingly unfortunate situations. Oh and let’s not forget the super sexy Villains that Eden runs into.

The Hero Complex is another amazing co-write from K.A Knight & Erin O’Kane, which will have you laughing and blushing with this short story. These two hold nothing back, so if you don’t like swearing or characters that are as honest as your granny after a few wines, then this might not be for. But if you love a laugh, aren’t afraid of cursing, crudeness and other c words, then you’ll probably, no definitely love this story.

I hope this wasn’t just a one off and there’s more to come from this world.

This book may be short but it packs a big ass punch in only 80 pages. The book was absolutely hilarious from start to finish and reminded me a lot of the Cupidity series. The heroine is a ditz but she takes her job very seriously. It’s just too bad she completely sucks at it and is always getting summoned to the head honchos office. Nothing goes right for her or anyone in her path, in fact it almost always goes horribly wrong. I loved this book and wouldn’t mind seeing these characters again, I’m sure with her their lives are anything but normal. She hooks up with 3 villains and it’s like a karmic joke they’re all together, the world better w@tch out.

I almost died!

Pretty sure I almost killed myself from laughing so hard. I wasn't sure what to expect from reading the description but since it was a short story I thought I'd give it a try. And holy crap am I glad I did! Even though it was a quick read, it didn't seem rushed like most short stories. The storyline was on point. If you have a crude sense of humor and like a good RH then you have to give this book a try! So many laugh out loud moments and it was super HOT! I absolutely loved this!

Oh god I’m in tears. Super short at 88 pages but funny, sexed up and highly entertaining. Eden is a failure as a hero and ends up reclassified as a villain. It’s not much better but at least she has three guys to bring down with her. Eden is super clumsy, has a potty mouth, no filter and even worse thoughts. Great fun loved it.

This was such a f*ckinh hilarious read. I'm so sad that it was short. The four of them are so hot together 🥵 Eden is a walking, talking disaster. No wonder she gets points for being a Villain by just having s*x. And the accidental bank robbery? Only you Eden 🤣 On to read the Cupidity series as I've heard they're hilarious and I really want a book like this one 💙

A quirky and funny short RH. Heroine is cute without being annoying and while the “boys” are your stereotypical crew (one gruff, one nerdy, one sensitive) it works. Story kind of ends on a mini cliffhanger so hope there is a follow up to the story.

I have never laughed so hard from beginning to end in a book. Love the fact that it's a fast burn and we get to the nitty-gritty rather quickly. Also, the story-line is good and I love when a good guy goes bad and it's even better when they just plain suck at it but keep on trying. This book is hilarious and I can not wait for book 2

This was so funny, I could not stop laughing. Was satirical and dramatic, in a good way. Eden slightly annoyed me until I accepted the fact that the dramatics /were/ the point.

Realized this is the same author as DOV, in which I did not like the FMC, at all. Eden has the same energy in this novella as the FMC in DOV. It worked here because of the short length and odd world building. Both of them are insufferable and annoying.

Freaking hilarious

Honestly, I need this to be a full length book because I haven’t laughed this hard in a while. Eden is the most hapless, ridiculous, bumbling anti-hero ever, and her dialogue will slay you. This is a super fun quick read!

Unfortunately missed the mark for me 😢

I will preface this review by saying I have loved everything Erin O’Kane and KA Knight have written previously. Unfortunately this book missed the mark for me. I think the toughest things for me was that I barely connected with the MC at all. Now I know this was supposed to be a funny, sexy, and a tad ridiculous read, but the jokes didnt really do it for me and sometimes it was too much, if that makes sense. I loved Ripper and Peeper (for some reason in my head I kept calling him Pepper haha, must be Avengers on the brain!). I didnt understand at all how Streaker went from quiet guy to incredibly domineering. I mean it was hot, dont get me wrong, but he didnt have a big part in the beginning, unlike Ripper and Peeper, and then bam, he is a dom. I just kinda wish there was a couple paragraphs before that scene with more Streaker in it to help balance it. I love the quiet types who are secretly kinky/have a dom side, but this one felt forced.

I really wanted to like this book more. I loved the premise, I just dont think it was executed at the same level that KA and Erin have done previously. Not saying it needs to be serious/super in depth because that wasn’t the point of this story. I just mean it was disjointed and the transitions weren’t as smooth as their other works. I felt like I had eaten a lot of candy and I couldn’t focus on any one thing. I still will read all the books Erin and KA put out because they are some of my favorite new authors. This one just wasn’t for me.

This was an entertaining book!

At times, the humour felt a bit forced but at other times I laughed out loud. I feel like the authors maybe felt that they had to incorporate humour wherever they could and that's why it felt a bit forced.

The characters were all cool. Welcome to the world's worst villains:

Our main FMC, Eden was funny, blunt and, well, horny. She failed at being a hero and kept accidentally killing people, and also sorta failed at being a villain.
At times, I felt she was a bit too careless to the point where it felt like nothing in the world mattered to her, but that's just how it is.

My favourite guy, though I know favourites aren't needed, was Ripper - a thor look-alike. Do I have to explain further?
His little 'How I became a villain' scene was brilliant.

Tugging on the woman's arm I freeze when, with a horrible ripping and wet noise sound, it tears straight from her body. Blood spurts everywhere and the woman howls before fainting.
"Oh my god, I'm so sorry! I can fix this!" Turning to the crowd, panicked and feeling slightly ill, I gasp, "Does anyone have a plaster?"

Streaker, a villain for accidentally streaking when learning how to use his invisibility powers was shy in any place that wasn't a bed...wait, I meant in any circumstance other than sex. They didn't stick to the beds.

Peeper was a bit of a flirt. He could read minds and was the most confident out of the guys.

This book is one you read when it's late in the evening and you're looking for something quick and light-hearted.

This was an entirely hilarious story, from beginning to the end, a completely novel approach to heroes and villains, and a whole lot of awesomeness from two amazing authors. And the second half of the story contains tons of sex, mostly hilarious sex.
It took me several days to finish the story because I could not stop laughing. Some of the situations the main character finds herself in, are so incredible and ridiculous, I have no clue how the authors came up with them.
Eden is completely clueless, clumsy and incompetent as a hero, totally unladylike and superadorable, trying so hard and not succeeding. Her attempts at saving people are a complete disaster. Her interactions with people, her colleagues, her bosses, her opponents, the guys, all of them are incredibly funny. Her inner monologues are hilarious. Eden is overall a fantastic character. In fact, all of the characters in the story are fantastic.
This was a great story, great adventure, superfun read, and I loved every moment of it. And although it seems to be a standalone story, I hope the authors will write more about Eden and her guys in future.

Spoiler free, as always! As a reader who enjoys following authors, I like to make it a point to read every book by the authors I like. The premise of this book was an unusual one, and I’ll admit, while intrigued, it wasn’t really my usual interest - I’m more action, paranormal type. This book is hilarious. It’s comedy gold, there is almost nothing sacred in it that isn’t made into a joke somehow. I can only assume that it is meant to be this hilarious, jokester, nothing-taken-seriously comedic book, because in all honesty, I didn’t find much depth to it. And that isn’t said as a bad thing, in this case. The book itself wasn’t super long, and while normally I might find that sad, I actually liked it this time - it was like a sitcom episode, and now I want the next episode to come on, so I can laugh again for a short time, pause, and do it again! I’m not sure if it’s meant to become darker, or more intense or emotional at all, and I’m not sure I want it to, either. It’s nice to read something lighthearted.

Eden is a failed hero. She tries (sorta) but it seems that something just always goes wrong. The higher-ups have finally decided she needs reclassification. Heroes, villains... It's all so much work. There has to be a better way. A way that doesn't hurt anyone else; a way that's much more fun. And maybe, just maybe there will still be time for donuts.

This book is in your face ridiculous! In the best possible way of course. Eden is simply absurd. Her random stream of inner consciousness, her inability to stay focused, and her natural ability to find trouble make for one of the more comical female characters ever. The villains are a mostly hapless group but at least they're pretty to look at.

This book was a perfect escape. An hour full of giggles. I loved this idea of villainy, the fate of the truly evil one, and the bet in progress. For such a quick read there are lots of laughs. And sex. And donuts.

4.5 rounded up

Bloody hilarious!!!! Heroes and villains face off in an epic, yet still somehow corporate like, world, each vying to save or destroy humanity. It’s a game, and Eden gets to play it... on the wrong side. Once a hero, her clumsiness and ineptitude have labeled her a villain, and she lands with a trio of equally inept villains. Fortunately, they’re hot, and public intercourse gains them points. Who knew?

Pros:
- Laugh out loud funny!
- Great premise.
- Hot

Cons:
- So short. This is Novella length. Need more!

Fans of Raven Kennedy’s Cupidity and Jane Washington and Jaymin Eve’s curse of the Gods will love this!

I mean......this was fine.
If you just want a super quick RH read, with no plot and a spunky heroine, then this is for you.

Eden is supposed to be a "Hero", but she's constantly causing more harm than good and her personality is not exactly "Bringer of Justice" material. She meets three mediocre villians and pretty much insert herself into their lives, which is funny.

I just read this as a nightcap. With an average rating of 4+, I expected more out of this, but I suppose Eden's appeal was significant enough to warrant the rating. I would have loved her in a full-length novel or series, but maybe with different guys. The guys were average and didn't really stand out.

Crushed it

This book follows Eden, a Hero who has serious issues with...well, with everything. As hard as she tries, things just never seem to work out right.
This book was funny and hot. Eden is hilarious, even when she isnt trying to be. Poor girl. The story itself is an interesting take on the hero/villian dynamic and the plot is easy to follow.
Overall, I would recommend this book. It's a funny read and great for those days where you need something fun to offset the bad.

Dysfunctional Hero/Villian to Save the Day?!?

What a fun concept? Hero Eden just doesn't have what it takes to be a hero. Everytime she tries to do good, something bad happens. When she is reclassified as a Villian, she doesn't know what do do or who she really is. When she meets three other Villians that aren't really "good" Villians, but their circumstances classified them as such, she starts to just be happy being herself. Is she good or bad? Is she really a Hero or a Villian? Can't wait to see where circumstances take her and her Villians next

Hilarious female lead!

If you love a female obsessed and thinks happiness comes from donuts, sex, wine and porn than this book is for you 🤣.

The FMC is hilarious and the most sucky hero that has ever lived. She has the worst bad luck and clumsiness which inevitably winds her up being reclassified as a villain. The story from there is full of hilarious moments, lot of sex everywhere and I mean everywhere, accidental killings and being the worst villains possible.
Join Eden and her guys through this hilarious tale!

I have read mostly the work of Ms. O' Kane and the books she had co-written with Ms. Knight, and I'm confident to say I have enjoyed reading those . This one though, I have mixed feelings about.

It was well written, light, fun, with hot, sexy steamy scenes and some action. I think what I'm missing was that it was a bit short for me to have a connection with the FMC and the guys. I would describe Eden as a cross between Willa of COG and Emelle of Heart Hassle series. If this was really supposed to be a short story, then I guess I'd love a novella later on.
