X-Men: Heroes For Hope #1

Rate this book
Heroes for Hope: Starring the X-Men is a 1985 Marvel comic book designed to raise awareness about hunger in Africa. Proceeds from the comic went to the American Friends Service Committee, to assist in their work on behalf of African famine relief and recovery. Published in the form of a "comic jam," or exquisite corpse, the book featured an all-star lineup of comics creators as well as a few notable authors from outside the comic book industry, such as Stephen King, George R. R. Martin, and Edward Bryant. It also saw a rare Alan Moore Marvel Comics credit outside his early Marvel UK work.

Heroes for Hope featured some memorable artist/writer and penciler/inker pairings, including Stan Lee and John Buscema; Stephen King and Bernie Wrightson; Alan Moore and Richard Corben; Harlan Ellison, Frank Miller, and Bill Sienkiewicz; Mike Baron and Steve Rude, Howard Chaykin inked by Walt Simonson; and John Byrne and Terry Austin reuniting on the X-Men.

Chris Claremont is a writer of American comic books, best known for his 16-year (1975-1991) stint on Uncanny X-Men, during which the series became one of the comic book industry's most successful properties.

Claremont has written many stories for other publishers including the Star Trek Debt of Honor graphic novel, his creator-owned Sovereign Seven for DC Comics and Aliens vs Predator for Dark Horse Comics. He also wrote a few issues of the series WildC.A.T.s (volume 1, issues #10-13) at Image Comics, which introduced his creator-owned character, Huntsman.

Outside of comics, Claremont co-wrote the Chronicles of the Shadow War trilogy, Shadow Moon (1995), Shadow Dawn (1996), and Shadow Star (1999), with George Lucas. This trilogy continues the story of Elora Danan from the movie Willow. In the 1980s, he also wrote a science fiction trilogy about female starship pilot Nicole Shea, consisting of First Flight (1987), Grounded! (1991), and Sundowner (1994). Claremont was also a contributor to the Wild Cards anthology series.

A dreary dirge, fun to realize authors like Stephen King, R R Martin, and Alan Moore were involved. Definitely not the charity themed book I expected.

Some of the early pages aren’t bad, but it soon devolves into an unreadable mess. The story, such as it is, is completely one-note. Shame. Noble cause, piss poor result. The highlight has to be Alan Moore’s Magneto pages. Stan Lee’s pages are okay, too. It would have been nice to see more X-Men from some of these creators. Denny O’Neil’s pages are just a transition, and unfortunately it’s a transition from dumb to trainwreck. I blame the plot. It’s a mess.

(Special thanks to Janet Jackson!)

Three stars for the cause and effort. That said, I thought the story itself was unintelligible and unreadable. The pages illustrated by Bernie Wrightson and Jeffrey Catherine Jones were interesting, as some panels looked more like Jones than Wrightson. The Alan Moore and Richard Corben pages pose a tantalizing question of what longer collaborations between the two artists might have been like.
