KILLER OR TARGET?

Dr. Kelly Irving knew her husband, attorney Jack Harbaugh, was acting strangely, but figured they’d get through it. When she backed out of her garage that morning, she thought her car hit a bump. Instead, its progress was stopped by the body of a man her husband recently represented. Not only that, the dead man had been shot by her husband’s gun. The police who investigated made it clear that Jack was a primary suspect.

Kelly couldn’t decide if Jack was a murderer or marked as the next victim. As things continued to escalate, they were forced to put their marital differences aside and concentrate on keeping Jack alive while discovering who was behind the whole thing.

This was a good book. Short but kept me listening. The narrator was really good too. Clear and distinctive character voices. I will be looking for more of this author's books.

Great mystery suspense with lots of questions around every corner. What starts as a normal day for Kelly and her husband quickly turns into a variable who done it as she tries to figure out if her husband is responsible for the dead body in her driveway or not.

Bill Nevitt is a good narrator and has the perfect pacing for this short tale.

The author has once again written a story that is filled with intrigue and characters that jump off the pages. I love the story concept of this book. The author has not only incorporated what he writes best which is about medical drama but has included a bit of dangerous gun-running into the mix. As a lawyer Jack has different clients, but this particular one will have a devastating turn of events for him. What do you do when your client confesses a crime that is going to happen? Jack must decide to do the right thing even though it puts him and his wife in danger. The tension is felt throughout the book. Is this a case of mistaken identity or a well planned plot to get guns on the street?

There is another aspect of the book I liked. It talks about when a marriage is in danger and communication shuts down. Jack tries to hide what is going on from his wife Kelly. The author does a great job of showing how easily a marriage can fall apart if we don't trust God and shallow our pride. The story is a quick read but it sure has the action that the author always delivers. I loved the little twists in the story and found it to enhance the overall story. It's a great story filled with danger, secrets, learning to trust and an ending that I loved.

I received a copy of this book from the author. The review is my own opinion.

Dr. Kelly Irving worries that she and her husband, attorney Jack Harbrough, have hit a rough patch in their marriage, because he seems to be acting strangely. Then one snowy morning in Houston, she backs out of their garage to leave for work, and her car is stopped by a dead body.

Not Jack. A recent client of his. And the man has been shot with Jack's gun.

Jack had taken him on reluctantly, to defend him in a minor drug possession case, the result of a clearly illegal search during a traffic stop. Unfortunately, the man had also blabbed about a big gun running deal he was involved in. Jack should have reported it to the police then--a clearly stated intention to commit a crime isn't protected by attorney-client privilege. He didn't, for fear of retaliation. Now, he has no choice.

And they are soon plunged into exactly the problems he hoped to avoid, with the added feature that initially, Jack has to be considered a suspect in the murder of his ex-client.

Kelly and Jack are both likable, interesting characters. They're intelligent, and good at what they do. I will say that Kelly seems a bit stronger as a person than Jack, but truly, he's not a bad guy. Mabry also has a pretty good handle on writing strong women characters who aren't there just to make a point, who are genuinely strong when it matters.

The narrator has a good, clear, pleasant voice,

This is a novella, short and to the point, and well worth the time I spent listening to it.

I received a free copy of this audiobook from the narrator, and am reviewing it voluntarily.

This book is a quick listen and reminded me of watching a police TV show. A young lawyer, Jack Harbaugh, and his wife. Dr. Kelly Irving, are caught up in a murder investigation after Jack takes on a new client. What he thinks is a simple drug charge turns into so much more and soon Jack and Kelly are running for their lives.

The book is entertaining, but nothing too unique or different. The characters could have been better developed and more interesting and I found Jack to be especially aloof. Not a bad book, just nothing too exciting. The writing reminded me more of a screenplay than a novella. But, I would probably read another book by Dr. Mabry.

The narrator, Bill Nevitt, does his usual excellent job and is the highlight of this book in my opinion. He always does a great job and keeps the listener's interest even if the book is a little lackluster. All in all, this is the type of book that would make a good beach read: entertaining enough to keep your interest without too much brain power being expended.

I was given the opportunity to listen to this book by the narrator and chose to review it.

What should you do when you are told something that can get you into a lot of trouble regardless of what you do? You have a legal obligation to inform the police, but that can quickly lead to retribution. If you fail to report to the police, danger still lurks. Is there any way out of such a situation? Jack Harbaugh is going to find out when he agrees to represent a man arrested for drug possession. In the meantime, his wife, Dr. Kelly Harbaugh, has concerns about her husband’s strange actions, which almost border on secretiveness. Does he have a case that is troubling him, or is something else going on in his life? I enjoyed the fast action and the strong faith element, particularly on the part of Kelly. I appreciated the people who offered to pray for her and Jack. The story is a quick read but interesting and exciting. I received an advance copy of this book from the author. This is my honest review. All opinions are strictly my own.

Dr. Kelly Harbaugh thinks that she and her attorney husband, Jack, may have just reached a rough patch in their marriage. But it becomes clear that there's more behind Jack's strange behavior when one of his recent clients ends up dead in Emergency Case by Richard L. Mabry, M.D.

Although I'd been hearing about this retired doctor's ChristFic for some time, this novella is the first of his books I've read. Because the weight of the plot falls mostly on Jack and his work, I suspected for much of the story that it's really legal suspense, not a medical thriller. But more of a medical aspect eventually comes into play, at least as far as the setting.

While I felt some of the parts were pretty uneventful, the plot here is interesting overall. There isn't much in the way of character or emotional development, and I could often feel the scenes setting up for danger when I'd rather be caught at least somewhat off guard by dangerous twists, but I enjoyed having this quick dose of entertainment.

I plan on trying more from this author sometime.

EMERGENCY CASE is Dr. Mabry's newest novella. Not a medical thriller like he became known for but it does have a doctor. Knowing how suspense usually works I guessed who might be behind the crimes early on, but I was curious to see if I was right. I was - and I wasn't. :) You'll have to read the book to find out what I mean.
Dr, Mabry is one of my husband's favorite authors as he gets the medical stuff that goes right over my head but due to circumstances out of his control I got this book to review since my husband is working two jobs and has no time for pleasure reading. Thankfully there is no medical jargon in there, so I was fine.
If you like suspense, you will want to read Dr. Mabry's EMERGENCY CASE. There are some tension, edge of your seat moments.
I was given a copy free. All opinions are my own.

Imagine backing out of your driveway and hitting a dead man in said driveway. Goodness, what a shock!

I have been reading Dr Richard Mabry's books since his very first medical fiction novel. I have enjoyed each one. I fully intend to continue reading each one he writes. I love a medical setting, and as a retired physician, he knows the lay of the land, so to speak. With great characters and great plots, his books will always be a go-to read for me.

Catch 22.
As an attorney, Jack Harbaugh is obliged to disclose information that could potentially lead to a crime, but doing so could put his life and the lives of his friends and colleagues, in danger. On the other hand, if he keeps the information to himself, he is breaking the law, yet still under threat from the thugs. What to do??
His wife is a doctor and she is growing increasingly worried about her husband's behaviour. He seems distracted, not himself, is there something she should know? Then she reverses out of her driveway and over a dead body, which brings everything to a head.

This was a novella length who-done-it, which entertained me for several hours on a flight recently. The narration, by Bill Nevitt is clear and easy to follow. I would have preferred a full novel, where I can get to know the characters a bit better, but this was still entertaining and to the point.

Since this was a novella, it wasn't quite up to what I have come to expect from Dr. Mabry. It was still worth reading, though.

I was excited to learn that Dr. Mabry had a new release, as I have read many of his books, and I always enjoy them. Emergency Case (a novella) is no exception.

Attorney Jack Harbaugh has dealt with tough cases in the past, but he thought his latest client's case would be a slam dunk. He never imagined it would be something that would place his life, as well as his wife Kelly's, in danger.

Kelly is a doctor, and she's noticed that her relationship with Jack has been strained and he's been acting different lately. Yet when she finds a dead man in their driveway, she is shocked to discover that Jack could be a murderer, as well. However, when her life is threatened, she must work with Jack if they both hope to survive.

Vivid detailing and abundant action will have the reader turning the pages as they uncover the details with the characters. Secondary characters are well integrated, and there are a couple surprise twists along the way. Unlike Mabry's other books, this one has more of a legal angle to it, in addition to the medical components. An excerpt from the author's next book, Fatal Decision (scheduled for release in the summer of 2019) is also included ... and I can't wait to read it!

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy, but I wasn't required to leave a positive review.

You know your day is off to a bad start when you back over a body in your driveway.
The only thing that’s worse? When your wife backs over a body in your driveway … and you’re a lawyer who recognises the victim as a shady client. The kind who pays in cash, doesn’t want a receipt, and chats about the illegal gun deal he has going down.

So Jack Harbaugh day doesn’t start well, and it doesn’t get better. His handgun is missing, and it fires the same kind of bullets that killed the dead guy. He didn’t do it, so who is setting him up? How can he persuade the police he’s innocent? And what’s he going to tell his wife?

Emergency Case is a strong thriller that’s a mix of Richard L Mabry’s traditional medical thriller, and another personal favourite: the legal thriller. It also has a touch of marriage guidance—another of Mabry’s trademarks. He prefers to write about married couples rather than write romances. That’s good.

There are precious few Christian novels that feature married couples, whether happily married or otherwise. Mabry’s couples—including Leah and Jack—are what I call realistically married. There are good days and bad days (although I’m glad my bad days don’t include backing over a dead body in my driveway).

Emergency Case is a short novella, recommended for medical suspense fans.

"I suggest we give my suggestions a try."
This book I was an enormous disappointment, despite the initial plot concept being intriguing, holding, as it does, a moral dilemma almost from the outset, and the terrifying concept of the body in the snow holding great promise. But unfortunately it was marred by clunky writing with minimal characterisation and the farcical ending. It was so unbelievable it became comic. Such a pity.

The book was, in part, saved by the narration of Bill Nevitt, who was able to breathe some life into the cardboard characters with his voicing s and carried the somewhat dead pan, trite dialogue and text with good intonation and integrity. But even his performance was unable to fully rescue this novella.

My thanks to the rights holder of Emergency Case who, at my request, freely gifted me with a complimentary copy. Perhaps I was wrong to have high expectations and so was doubly disappointed. This could make an exciting film, however, where actors give a life to the protagonists which is merely briefly sketched into the book and, with the action vividly played out on screen, an easier suspension of disbelief.

Another great novella by Dr. Mabry! Being a retired physician himself, he writes with experience and knowledge that makes his stories more realistic and more interesting. This was suspense at its best with a surprise perp at the end. And no, I didn't figure it out ahead of time and I also didn't sneak a peep the end. That spoils the fun!
Although Kelly is a doctor and her husband Jack is an attorney, the action centered more in the criminal/police area than the medical. I enjoy the medical suspense as is usual with Dr. Mabry, but this was equally good following the trail of the bad guys. It was a page turner right at the beginning when Kelly ran over a dead body in her driveway as she was going to work. Who was this man that had been shot and why was her husband's gun found close by? And that's just the beginning of the suspense and excitement!
I received a complimentary ebook copy of this novella from the author but was not required to write a review positive or otherwise.

Emergency Case is the newest novella by Dr. Richard Mabry. Mabry is known for his faith-filled, suspenseful books, and this one is no exception. But this time we get a husband and wife team with legal and medical perspectives trying to outwit the bad guys. I really liked the married couple, Kelly and Jack Harbaugh. Theirs is not a perfect marriage — their respective careers demand a lot from them. But they were committed to each other and making their relationship work, though things get a bit sidetracked as Jack is a suspect in the murder of his client and unknown assailants continue to attack. Emergency Case is a short and fast-paced read; you could finish this one in one sitting, but it doesn’t scrimp on the essentials — determined characters, a puzzling mystery, and thoughtful questions of faith and ethics. It’s a winner! And a recommended read from me.

Recommended.

Audience: adults.

Emergency Case by Richard L. Mabry is an intriguing novella not to be missed by readers who enjoy fast-paced mysteries. Although this author is known for medical thrillers, this story has little to do with the medical world and yet is interesting and keeps the reader's attention, wondering how in the world the situations will turn out. Jack is a lawyer who has taken on a case that just might be his last case and his physician wife is quickly entangled in the danger as well. Great characters, a quick-moving plot, and a mystery that has several twists that one doesn't see coming all keep the pages quickly turning. The narrator of this audiobook, Bill Nevitt, does a great job giving voice to the characters and their story, making for an enjoyable listening experience. I listened to a complimentary copy of the audio version of the book and was not required to write a review. The opinions are my own.

Richard L. Mabry, MD continues to amaze me as a storyteller. This is my second work of his I have read (the first and this one both being novellas) and I love how he adds elements of mystery, suspense, faith, and medical knowledge in his books. Novellas can be tricky because often they either feel rushed or they lack character development. In both Emergency Case as well as Silent Night Deadly Night, Mabry somehow ratchets up the suspense and plot twists in around 100 pages. Like Silent Night Deadly Night, I had an inkling of what was going on but Mabry provides a few more twists that I did not see coming. And there is also a nice faith element as well as a lesson about consequences of a bad action. After two novellas, I am definitely ready for a Mabry full length novel.

Attorney Jack Harbough is defending a man on a minor drug charge. When his client gives information about a gun running operation, Jack is torn between attorney-client privilege and his duty as an officer of the court. A few days later, that client shows up in Jack’s driveway...under his wife’s car...shot dead. Now Jack’s life is in danger...and possibly that of his wife. If only the police would believe Jack...after all, Jack’s gun IS the murder weapon. There is so much going on in this short book that you’re at the edge of your seat wondering what’s next? Will the bad guys succeed in killing Jack? Will the police believe that Jack is telling the truth? Will Jack’s wife stand by his side?
Enjoyable book and equally enjoyable narration.

Jack was an attorney, a client he didn’t want to take but was persuaded. In seeing Mr Alba eyes again, he had seen eyes like them once before and they were of a killer. A simple case client wanted written off, he kept on talking that’s when things turned bad. He didn’t want or need to know what illegal things he was doing or even when. Jack keeps pondering if he should tell someone, the police, if he did would that create a bigger, or deadly problem. The next morning, his wife discovers a dead man on the driveway.
Now, there definitely is a problem .Gripping unusual plot, with each question he is asked, Jack looks more guilty. Who and how will this rollercoaster of events be stopped. As for readers we can’t stop until the last page.

This review is for the audiobook.
This was a nice easy to follow long thriller. It was quite short but still enjoyable and good if you have a few hours to fill in and hate stopping in the middle of a story.
Jack is a lawyer who gets talked, against his better judgment,in to taking on a shady client and then things go down hill from there for him and his doctor wife. What was a simple case snowballs into dead bodies, missing gun, car crashes and A moral dilemma. With the police questioning there every move and not sure who to trust the couple have to come together to stay a live.
The narrator (Bill Nevitt) was very good and the couple of hours just flew by in a blink as it was very well read .

Fast and furious

Emergency Case is Dr. Richard Mabry's first novella. The only objection I have is that he didnt develop a whole novel out of it. Nevertheless, all bases were covered in this gun-running plot orchestrated by a talkative criminal seeking lawyer Jack's assistance with a minor violation. Jack's wife, Dr. Kelly, is dragged into the situation when someone rams the car--Jack's car--that she is driving. A sting operation fails to bring the perps to light, but in quick order the gun running scheme blows apart. Only a couple hours to read. Like all Dr. Mabry's books, this one is excellent.

I was intrigued by the story line and was glad to receive a free copy from Bill Nevitt via TBC Audible. It was a Medical Thirller, which I haven’t read for quite some years, it had an intriguing plot and a Christian slant. Well this would be a first!
How to start your day,...... run over the body of a dead man as you reverse out of your drive on the way to work. It starts with a bang and hardly lets up! There’s a lot packed into this novella. It is the first writing by Richard L Maybry and distinctive narration by Bill Nevitt that I’ve listened to and I’m so pleased I now have. I’m sure it won’t be the last.

Grabbed me from the start.

Another tricky review to write because of the twists and turns of the plot. I loved this book. Right from the start I was intrigued and wanted to know the answers to lots of the questions I had as a reader. At several moments, I gasped out loud.

I wasn't familiar with the author Richard L Mabry before listening to this book but I will definitely be buying more.

The narrator Bill Nevitt is one of my favourites and he really added something special to this story.

This is an entertaining murder, mystery novella with ethical dilemmas, deception and suspense. What attorney Jack Harbaugh thought would be an easy, cut and dried case, turns into a life-threatening nightmare for him and his wife, Kelly. The narrator of the audiobook does a great job of creating tension and bringing the characters to life. I especially liked Kelly, she had strong convictions, determination and you could feel her emotions and her love for her husband. Gun running, murder, car crashes, intrigue and suspense will keep you enthralled for the length of this story.

Interesting, but too short.

Kelly is a doctor and Jack is a Lawyer.
While at a dinner party, Jack is confronted by a stranger and asked if he could represent a friend. The friend a Mr. Alba goes to his office.
He needs help with a traffic violation. Jack agrees, even though his firm doesn't specialize in that.
While in the office Mr. Alba begins to tell Jack about an illegal gun sale that he has to be a part of. Jack nervously tells him to stop.
From that point on this book is nonstop action.

The doctor almost ran over the body, but she didn't kill him. Her husband the lawyer defended him in court and it was his gun that did the deed, but he didn't even know it had gone missing. Marital complications and illegal activities come in play, but it's the suspense that really gets you!
Bill Nevitt is the narrator and is great as usual!

Emergency Case was a good read by Richard L. Mabry, MD. Kelly is a doctor who has noticed that her husband Jack acted strange. She backed out of her garage and thought she hit a bump but she never believed it would be the body of a man that her husband represented. Come to find out he was shot by her husband's gun. Jack became a primary suspect and now they needed to keep away the people who are now after him. This was a good read by the author.
