About the author

Isabel Allende Llona is a Chilean-American novelist. Allende, who writes in the "magic realism" tradition, is considered one of the first successful women novelists in Latin America. She has written novels based in part on her own experiences, often focusing on the experiences of women, weaving myth and realism together. She has lectured and done extensive book tours and has taught literature at several US colleges. She currently resides in California with her husband. Allende adopted U.S. citizenship in 2003.

Lo que nos cuenta. El libro Afrodita (publicación original: 1997), con el subtítulo Cuentos, recetas y otros afrodisiacos, es un trabajo ilustrado que mezcla poesía, anécdotas, crónica, fantasía, relatos, recetas, ensayo, biografía y varias cosas más para aproximarse al disfrute de los sentidos y, en especial, al sexo y la comida de distintas maneras.

I tried to read this because it came recommeded from a friend with impeccable taste. Yeah, not so mcuh with this.

It tried to hard to be sexy in a Nigella Lawson way, and just came off like a desperate middle aged, sex starved housewife. While this may be the demographic they're going for it just sat all wrong with me. It felt a bit like buying sexy knickers with your mum.

الجميلة إيزابيل الليندى وكتاب عن الأفروديات .. الحب .. والطعام

تصورت أن الكتاب يحوى حكايات أيروسية فقط ولكنه كان رحلة ممتعة .. انقسم الكتاب إلى قسمين ، فى الجزء الأول ألهفت الليندى خيال ووجدان القارىء بقصص شائقة عبر التاريخ وحتى من خلال حكاياتها الشخصية . فى الجزء الثانى مزجت ذلك كله بوصفات أمها الخبيرة بالطهو ولم تترك فرعاً إلا وقدمت فيه العديد من الوصفات الأفروديتية ..

كتاب ممتع وفريد .. جميل أن تُرجم إلى العربية

يجب حظر هذا الكتاب للأشخاص الذين تقل أعمارهم عن ثمانية عشرة عامًا؛ ومع ذلك، قرأته في سن الثامنة عشر ووجدته بشعًا. لقد استمتعت ببعض الوصفات، وبعض القصص ولكن بقية القصص القصيرة والحكايات كانت مروعة بالنسبة لي وجنسية جداً. لقد وجدت أنها مبالغ فيها ومفرطة. لم يناسبني.

This book should be banned for people younger than 18; with that said, I read it at 18 and found it grotesque. I enjoyed some of the recipes, and some stories but the rest of the short stories and tales were horrific to me and quite sexual. I found it exaggerated and inordinate. Not my cup of tea.

El libro inicia con un relato de recuerdos y experiencias de comida y amor de nuestra querida autora, cuenta también con recetas, relacionadas con amor y afrodisiaco...pero es algo así como el corazón de un hombre se gana por el estómago 🤪 es un libro divertido y un poco sin orden, es como si la escritora, empezara a tomar notas de estos temas con sus diferentes amistades y las propias, todas reunidas más las recetas nos da este libro.

يبدو هذا الكتاب رفيقاً استثنائياً للمرأة.. باقةٌ عظيمة من أسرار النساء الأفروديتيات.. مكمّلٌ حميمٌ لهنّ في تقاسيم الليل والنهار، ملهمٌ روحاني وجسدي.. مادي ومعنوي، في كل مكان يمكن أن تتواجد فيه المرأة..

i don't think this was the allende book i should have read first when i decided i wanted to explore latin american literature and magical realism in particular. i love the concept of food/sensuality/feminine/spice and enjoy other books on the topic.

however, the book did not quite translate into what i expected.

for example, there is a description comparing a lover's kiss to a 'mussel inserted in your mouth' which reminded me of the worst kissers in my life (thus far & hopefully ever) - zooming in unstoppable and open mouthed before i closed my eyes and braced myself. it did not strike me as a romantic description of a kiss. perhaps it lost something in translation?

there are many different recipes included in the book. most of them i would not make because they are time consuming or filled with ingredients i don't use.

the aphrodisiac qualities of certain foods and spices are listed in the book and that is something i can reread later. the book is also illustrated throughout with sensual latin american influenced illustrations. i don't know if that makes up for the mussel metaphor.

I remember plums I have eaten with more eroticism than I remember the mussel tongued kissers of my life and, unfortunately, most of this book.

recipes that include a slice of white bread as thickener (as many of these do) are not recipes i consider part of a sensual meal. i am perhaps suffering from some kind of prejudice here.

This was a strange book. Fascinating at times, dull at others, and occasionally plain puzzling (as in, where IS she going with this?). The best way to sum it up is a medley of anecdotes, myths, and personal experiences all regarding food and its role in love, romance, and decidedly kinkier ventures. Aphrodisiacs, if you will. I did love Allende's sauciness and odd split personality--very accepting of people's oddities on one hand, and slyly judgmental on the other hand.

By the time I got through the stories and the exhaustive lists of all foods ever possibly considered to be aphrodisiacs (whether by virtue of chemical powers or crude visual insinuations), I must admit that I was too worn out to bother looking through the allegedly rigorously tested recipes at the end of the book, written by Allende's mother. I think the book served more to convince me that the mythical power of aphrodisiacs is a bunch of bunk, rather than a tantalizing possibility.

If you don't want to get horny - read this book. Especially the parts about aphrodisiac cruelty. Why would someone put it in such a book? Also the tale about parents' orgy I found distasteful. My parent would definitely be displeased if I wrote something like that about them. Generally, I felt like reading about a woman who is chasing something she doesn't have. If it weren't for funny anecdotes, I could never finish this book.

أوقفت ترددي لمئات المرات...وهأنذا أكتب...
فرغم أنه من الكتب التي نحرص على تبادلها سرا، والحديث عنها همسا..ولكن لغة إيزابيل الراقية وأسلوبها الفريد الساخر المرح، ومعلوماتها الكثيرة، وفلسفتها الرائعة، وتجاربها الشخصية المنثورة هنا وهناك،وسحر كلماتها، شجعتني على كتابة مراجعة للكتاب، بل والتشجيع على قراءته...خاصة لمن قدمته إيزابيل لهم




في كتابها حصيلة الأيام تحدثت إيزابيل بتشويق عن كتاب أفروديت، الذي كتبته كما تقول في مذكراتها بعد رحلتها للأمازون، وتقول ان ما رأته في تلك الرحلة ألهب مخيلتها وجعلها تنهي الكتاب سريعا، وهو حكايات ووصفات تتحدث عن المطبخ الأفروديتي والذي قالت عنه:

"كيف نُعرِف الأفروديتي ؟ لنقل بأنه خلاصة أو نشاط يثير الرغبة بالحب. بعضها يملك ركيزة علمية لكن معظمها يعمل بدافع الخيال. لكل ثقافة و كل شخص ردة فعله"

مضمنة إياه نصوصا شعرية ورسوما تشكيلية لها علاقة بالموضوع..


التهمت صفحات الكتاب بلا ملل...وكأنني أمام إحدى تلك الولائم التي وصفتها...فإيزابيل وضعتني في أجواء الطبخ وإعداد الطعام بكل شاعرية، جعلتني أشم معها روائح التوابل العطرة، بل رائحة الحياة بمعنى مختلف...وألهبت غددي الذوقية، بل أثارت معها حواسي كلها مجتمعة..وتنقلت بي بين عدد من البلدان واصفة ثقافتهم الخاصة بإعداد الطعام والمأكولات المميزة في كل منها... فكافة المجتمعات وعلى مدار التاريخ كان لديها مجموعة من الاعتقادات ببعض الأغذية المحرضه للطاقه الجنسية.


تجاوزت سريعا بع�� فصول الكتاب التي لا تتناسب مع ثقافتنا وديننا مثل حديثها عن الخمور ولحم الخنزير

أما حديثها عن "الحريم" في الشرق الإسلامي فينقصه الكثير من الصحة، والسبب ما روج له بعض الكتاب واصفين ذلك العالم وكأن�� عالم ألف ليلة وليلة.


بعض الوصفات قززتني...وإن كانت عند بعض الشعوب وفي ثقافتهم تشكل مصدر لذة واستمتاع...كأكل الصراصير وأرجل الضفادع وأدمغة القرود الحيّة، وغيرها الكثير.


من الفصول التي راقت لي...تعويذة العطور..أعشاب وتوابل...همسات...لغة الأزهار

وأعجبني قولها:


"من الضروري أن نعلن الآن وبقلب مفتوح، وقبل ان يتابع القارىء اضاعة وقته في هذه الصفحات، أن الشيء الافروديتي الوحيد هو الحب. ما من شيء يستطيع أن يوقف العاطفة المتأججة لشخصين عاشقين. في هذه الحالة لا تهم صروف الدهر، حنق السنين، بطء الجسد، أو فقر الفرص، فالمحبان يتدبران أمرهما كي يتحابا، لأن قدرهما هو هذا تعريفا. لكن الحب مثل الحظ يصل حين لا يستدعيه أحد، يشوشنا ويتبخر مثل الضباب حين نحاول الامساك به. وبالتالي هو من وجهة نظر قيمته المهيجة ترف عدد محدود من المحظوظين، لا يدركه من لم يجرح بسهامه."



مشكلتي الكبرى بعد قراءة مثل هذا الكتاب أنني لست من هواة الطبخ نهائيا...يكفيني أن أستمتع بقراءة الوصفات وترشيح الكتاب لمن يهمهم الأمر

Estaba ansiosa por leer este libro, xq era básicamente una continuación de Paula. Era el libro del "después"; y simplemente quería saber como había hecho para recuperarse de la inmensa pérdida de su hija. Y no es q el libro no sea bueno. Está escrito con la misma prosa cuidada de Isabel, q te mete en la narrativa aunq no quieras. Solo q no era lo q yo esperaba. Y q esperaba? Algo más del estilo de "Paula", como un viaje de introspección personal hacia la curación. Q encontré? Un libro de recetas de cocina y consejos para mejorar las relaciones de pareja. Entiendo q la intención pudo haber sido celebrar la vida, y nada mejor para hacer eso q hablar de comida y de sexo, peeeero, las recetas no me han parecido particularmente inspiradoras ni a nivel sexual ni a nivel gastronómico; y aunq no es el único libro de esta autora con el q me he llevado un fiasco, definitivamente este ha sido el fiasco más importante.

Isabell Allende is my favorite writer. This is the one book of hers I haven't tried reading because I thought it was just a cookbook. An aphrodisiac cookbook, but still...

It's actually a really good essay on what are aphrodisiacs, and how they are viewed in different times, and even in different cultures.

Also, her amazing writing is still very obvious, even if it's not in magic realism form. She's as witty and sarcastic as ever.

I haven't gone through all the recipes yet, but there's some I want to take note of, that's for sure.

Δεν κρύβω πως αγαπώ την ανάλαφρη γραφή της Isabel Allende, πολύ περισσότερο όταν καταπιάνεται με πράγματα τόσο γνώριμα σ' αυτήν όπως οι ιστορίες και απ' ό,τι φαίνεται, η κουζίνα. Σε κάποια παράλληλη διάσταση θα μπορούσε να είναι η θεία μου απ' το Σαντιάγκο (πρώτη ξαδέρφη της θείας απ' το Σικάγο) που κάθεται στο τζάκι και διηγείται ιστορίες. Αν περιμένετε κάτι αντίστοιχο σε σύλληψη με το υπέροχο Σαν νερό για ζεστή σοκολάτα, θα απογοητευτείτε· είναι κάτι ανάμεσα σε βιβλίο μαγειρικής και ερωτικό εγχειρίδιο (η Βέφα Αλεξιάδου συναντά την Ειρήνη Χειρδάρη) διανθισμένο με αφηγηματικά παρελκόμενα, όμως πολύ επιμελημένο και με ωραιότατη εικονογράφηση. Ηθικό δίδαγμα: η συγγραφέας ή έχει λίμπιντο που χτυπάει κόκκινο ή ΟΛΑ είναι αφροδισιακά εκτός απ' τις λειχήνες και τα βρύα.

Κι εδώ έρχεται η πρώτη από τις δύο ενστάσεις μου, η οποία μου φαίνεται και πιο δικαιολογημένη. Όσο κι αν απολαμβάνω τη ύφος και το χιούμορ, δε βρήκα κάτι που δεν έχω ξαναδιαβάσει σε κάποιο προηγούμενο βιβλίο της. Ίσως μοιάζει αναπόφευκτο όταν πιάνεις το δέκατο έκτο έργο του ίδιου συγγραφέα κι ειδικά όταν δεν υπάρχει ένας κεντρικός νοηματικός άξονας αλλά πόσες φορές θα μας πει για τη γιαγιά της που δεν ανήκε σ' αυτόν τον κόσμο, τη μάνα της που ήταν πολύ ωραία γυναίκα, το "θείο Ραμόν" που δεν ήταν, τον άντρα της που έζησε επικίνδυνη νιότη και τα πιάτα που συνόδευαν όλα τα παραπάνω; Από ένα σημείο και μετά καταντά κουραστικό. Βρισκόμαστε ένα βήμα πριν το Σπύρο στους Απαράδεκτους και τα γεγονότα του Πολυτεχνείου.

Το δεύτερο σημείο που κατά κάποιο τρόπο συνδέεται με το πρώτο είναι στάση της απέναντι στα δύο φύλα. Η Allende αποτελεί μία από τις πιο επιφανείς εκπροσώπους του φεμινιστικού κινήματος στον κόσμο, κάτι που είναι προς τιμήν της. Ήδη στις πρώτες 80 σελίδες του βιβλίου συναντάμε (υπερβολικά πολλές για να περάσουν απαρατήρητες) ατάκες που καταγγέλλουν την καταπίεση της γυναίκας. "Θα έπρεπε μήπως να τις περιορίσει;" θα ρωτήσει κάποιος. Όχι ακριβώς. Δε μας λέει κάτι καινούριο ή κάτι που δεν ισχύει.
Εκατομμύρια γυναικών έχουν πέσει θύματα εκμετάλλευσης ανά τους αιώνες, σε πολλά μέρη του κόσμου συνεχίζουν να υποφέρουν ακόμα και σήμερα, και ναι, έχουμε ακόμα πολύ δρόμο για να έρθουν τα πράγματα σε μία ισορροπία. Όμως δύο λάθη δεν κάνουν ένα σωστό και μία αδικία δε διορθώνεται από μία νέα αδικία από την ανάποδη. Κι όταν μας λέει πως η αστυνομία έψαξε για το ακρωτηριασμένο μέλος του John Bobbitt (ξέρετε, τον άντρα της Lorena) ενώ αν "ήταν γυναικείο το μέλος προφανώς και δε θα έμπαιναν καν στον κόπο" κι όλα αυτά με μια ειρωνική διάθεση απέναντι στο θύμα, συγγνώμη αλλά ξεπερνάμε τα όρια και φτάνουμε στο σημείο της εμμονής, αν όχι της μισανδρίας. Για κάποιο λόγο (κοινωνική δικαιοσύνη; δείγμα θάρρους;) η συγγραφέας δικαιολογεί και σχεδόν εξυμνεί την άσκηση βίας όταν την υφίσταται άνδρας από χέρι γυναίκας, κάτι που έχουμε ξαναδεί στο Ινές, ψυχή μου και που με είχε ενοχλήσει και τότε· και για τους προφανείς λόγους αλλά και γιατί τη θεωρώ πολύ καλύτερη από τέτοια φτηνά κόλπα.

Well, ايزابيل تقدم دليل ارشادات لقلب الرجل والمرأة على حد سواء ... عن طريق وصفات افروديتيه كما اسمتها ، طعام يقودنا الى الشبق مباشرة .

هذا الكتاب صالح لكل الازمنة ، لكل الفئات العمرية ...
كما انه يجب ان يقدم مع عقود الزواج في مجتمعاتنا الشرقية .

كتاب تحكي فيه ايزابيل اللندي عن فلسفتها في الروائح والطبخ وأشياء شخصية آخرى، كثير من وصفات الطبخ في هذا الكتب أعتقد بأنه يناسب النساء المهتمات بالطبخ أكثر ومن يرغب بقراءة شيء عن ايزابيل

Sono rimasta un po' delusa da questo libro: di sicuro non è quello che mi aspettavo. Io speravo in una serie di racconti, magari anche fantasiosi, sulle proprietà afrodisiache di alcuni cibi, corredati delle ricette presenti nel racconto in fondo allo stesso.
Invece Afrodita non è nient'altro che un saggio sul cibo e la sensualità e su tutti i possibili cibi afrodisiaci del mondo, corredato qua e là dei disegni di Robert Shekter - che non ho trovato particolarmente erotici, malgrado l'ispirazione spesso boteriana - e da aneddoti relativi alle varie pietanze, a volte tratti dalla vita dell'autrice e dei suoi amici, altri già noti, perché appartenenti alla storia o alla letteratura. Sì, certo, raccontati dalla grande zia affabulatrice che è Isabel Allende hanno tutto un altro sapore, ma forse avrei preferito meno completezza e più storie, vere o false che fossero.
A volte l'ho trovata un po' contraddittoria, come quando nell'introduzione delle carni rosse afrodisiache scrive:
Molti dei vegetariani di questo mondo, nonostante il colore livido e l'anima tormentata, sopravvivono e si riproducono più che bene. D'altro canto c'è chi crede ciecamente che un pezzo di carne, se possibile al sangue, sia l'unico alimento sicuro. I popoli la cui dieta è povera di carne sono i detentori del record di esplosione demografica nonché quelli che hanno coltivato più diligentemente l'arte dell'erotismo; per questo motivo nutro seri dubbi sul vero potere afrodisiaco della carne di mammifero. Ma devo includerla, visto che molti testi seri dimostrano l'infondatezza delle mie perplessità. Ad ogni modo, questi piatti sono pesanti e con lo stomaco sazio e in piena digestione sono in pochi a poter vantare prodezze amatorie.
Ma non aveva parlato poco prima del grande potere afrodisiaco di mammelle di vacca, vulve di pecora e palle di toro? Non aveva parlato di cervella di ogni genere di animale, mammiferi in particolare - uomo incluso - con descrizioni truculente? Perché questo improvviso pudore?
Certo, sono interessanti alcune curiosità legate alle nostre tradizioni, come quella che riguarda il riso.
Riso. È il simbolo della fertilità. Quando con la più serena innocenza si butta il riso agli sposi all'uscita della chiesa, sono in pochissimi a sapere che il gesto rappresenta l'eiaculazione e il seme. Meno male. A proposito delle potenzialità afrodisiache del riso abbiamo sostenuto con Robert e Panchita discussioni bizantine simili a quelle relative al sesso degli angeli. C'era chi asseriva che è impossibile eccitare qualcuno con un piatto di riso, ma mia madre argomenta che la prova schiacciante dell'efficacia di questi granelli sta nella sovrappopolazione in Cina.
In fondo sono poi presenti diverse ricette - organizzate secondo i criteri di un qualsiasi libro di cucina: salse fredde, salse calde, antipasti, zuppe calde e fredde, ecc. - la gran parte delle quali sono state realizzate da Panchita Llona, l'ottuagenaria madre (all'epoca in cui è stato scritto il libro) di Isabel Allende, che a suo parere è la cuoca migliore che esista al mondo. Come sempre, quando si tratta di ricette, confesso di avere la puzza sotto al naso, soprattutto quando mi vedo presentati dei classici della cucina italiana stravolti secondo il gusto sudamericano. Scusate, ma spacciare come ricetta base del pesto (specificando però - per fortuna - che si chiama Pesto Amaranta e chiarendo che ci sono moltissime varianti) un'abominio con dentro paprika, brodo e uvetta bionda per me è un'eresia, anche se Isabel chiarisce che "Fare il pesto è un po' come fare l'amore: bastano i rudimenti, tutto il resto è pura improvvisazione.". Sì, OK, ma questi che rudimenti sono?
E poi, con tutto quell'aglio e quella cipolla per me queste ricette sono tutt'altro che afrodisiache!

تسرد إيزابيل في هذا الكتاب مجموعة من المقالات والوصفات وذكر لأطعمة وتوابل أفروديتية (منشطة جنسيا) مع محاولة منها لتوضيح الخصائص التي من أجلها اعتُبر هذا أو ذاك الشيء أفروديتيا -مع تحفظ وتأكيد الكاتبة على أن أفضل مثير للشهوة الجنسية هو الحب-.

كتاب لذيذ وبلا شك ستحب الطريقة التي تحدثك بها كصديق لها وتدردش معك وسط إعطاءك وصفاتها وسرد القصص عليك. لتجلب لك الأمل، أنه لا يوجد عمر للحب. فإذا كنت تحب القراءة في أدب الطعام والجنس. أو حتى لو لم تكن لديك الرغبة المسبقة في ذلك, هذا الكتاب سوف يسعدك ويلمسك ويجعل قلبك ينتفخ مثل البندق ولن تفشل إيزابيل في تركك جائعًا للغاية بعده.

Isabel Allende is one of my most favorite writers. She is witty, sarcastic, wise and funny, her words are eloquent, her stories memorable.

Aphrodite was the first book I ever read by her and it was bought as a special treat for me many years ago, and now re-reading it I feel vilified that it was money well spent. After this book I was determined to find her other books and have become a great fan of her novels.

This particular book is nonfiction, a memoir of aphrodisiac foods, or the connection between food love and sex but it is so well written in her characteristic style that it emerges as more than just a manual on these foods and instead is a book to read and enjoy just for the sheer witticism and lyrically descriptive writing. I loved the funny little drawings of satyrs, nymphs and witches given in the book, they were totally adorable.

An ode to sensuality that is an irresistible blend of memory, imagination and the senses, Aphrodite is familiar territory for readers who know her fiction.

Hot. That is the only word I can think of to describe this novel. It defintely has the Allende flavor of magical realism and picturesque description. I picked it up thinking it was a food memoir, but it is more of an exploration of the connection between food, sex and love. The recipes are her grandmothers'and you can feel the familial connection in the pages. The chapter describing the advice to her stepson on dating was downright funny and quite erotic. I liked the book, but it is not my favorite Allende novel. It moves a little slow in parts. It is provocative and entertaining for a fun read, it just takes a little while to get through.

Should be read in bed aloud to one's lover as s/he applies the whipped cream. Allende brings her own special brand of magical realism to this catalogue of aphrodisiacs and erotic lore, interspersing recipes and historical trivia with stories of love and sex from her life and the lives of the famous lovers of the past. Less prurient than passionate, even the book itself is a sensuous experience, printed as it is on heavy paper and lushly illustrated. To be sampled, savored, or devoured, as the mood strikes.

I read this book in Spanish. Allende says in the intro that she began to dream of food as a healing process after her daughter's death. The book is like reading essays on food and its relation to love, romance, and passion. It is beautifully illustrated, witty, and very sensual. At the end of the book, I imagine one would be tempted to try some of her recipes in a sexy atmosphere, rich in flavors, aromas, and sensual seduction. I highly recommend this book only to people who like spicy food and spicy love.

Un libro que me permitió conocer otro rostro de Isabel Allende, uno que no conocía, ni siquiera imaginaba.

Una obra muy diferente a las que regularmente se espera de Allende, aún así, en ninguna página encontré aburrimiento, es más, no podía soltarlo. Me encontré imaginando una conversación con la autora, entre sonrisas, humor y picardía; eso sí, el trabajo de investigación sobresale de forma exquisita.

Éste libro, todo un compendio de información de cultura general, anécdotas increíbles, obras de arte y un muy completo recetario.

Delicious, sensual, funny and well researched read! One to dip in every now and then just for fun and inspiration to concoct that special meal to seduce an object of desire... :-)
