This is another book in the series about a bookstore that spans two realities; the mundane world and the magical world.
The part that takes place in the mundane world is about Monica's relationship with the police officer Brian and how that relationship develops rather nicely.
The main part of the book takes place in the magical side. There's a game called Romp-A-Roo which is quite popular there. There is a problem on that side, though, with a cult called Remembrance. A werewolf is found to be murdered and it seems they are behind it. Things get much worse when another person dies. It looks like Remembrance is responsible. A suspected murderer is on the team, though.
Another aspect concerns another member of the team, a woman who is a selkie. Her selkie skin had been taken from her and a thug in prison knows where it is but won't tell her.
Monica and Abigail work with others to figure out who the murderer is and why the one guy, who always seemed to be nice, could be one of the suspects. The closeness of the team members shown quite well and the resolution is very interesting. The growing romance is done well and Abigail's life gets changed dramatically. A good addition to the series.
These are such inventive stories! I love the idea of a sports team of different creatures and the game is exciting and clearly understandable. The double-sided bookstore is a unique connection between our world and the magic realm and the characters are fascinating. I am particularly fond of the different familiars, especially the cat Abigail, who is actually a girl serving a long sentence as a cat familiar for her crimes during the Salem Witch Trial period. I am rooting for Abigail as she actually grows a conscience and works on earning reductions of her 500-year sentence. The books are full of creatures and humans brimming with decency and humor, as well as the villains and the evil individuals. Not one individual is undeveloped or a flat cartoon cutout. This cannot be accomplished in just a few books. Good thing! I’ll be happy to read as many as the author writes!
Monica, Holly, and Abigail are at the final Romp A Roo match that sends the surprised team into the finals. At the post party, A Hobbit's door is vandalized by a member of the Remembrance group. And then one of the team members winds up being killed.
Monica and Abigail start investigating with a little help from Holly (who mainly stays back in the mortal realm to run Monica's bookstore, they uncover more of the Remembrance gang and discover the true reason that another member of their team had turned into a killer. Abigail also gets some unexpected great news on her sentence as a familiar to an unnatural witch.
Pro's: Developed characters, some humor, and a fun eclectic cast of characters.
Con's: The story was flowing nicely, with much of the mystery wrapped up, the story just stops! There was more that needed closure in this story, and stopping where it did made for an extremely unsatisfactory ending.
Love this series. The idea of the two bookstores having a door between the two worlds is just fantastic. The differences in the life styles of the two worlds is very well done. Each world has its’ own way of life and are so totally different and wonderful. This story was so upbeat and yet a murderer lurked. Plus, Officer Brian and Monica are moving forward in their relationship and it is getting more interesting. Abigail the witch confined in a cats’ body is becoming a more humane witch and is receiving the benefits of her kindness. You need to read this series, it is fun and totally unique.
If I lived in this world, I'd stay away from Monica Montoya, especially when she's involved with Romp-A-Roo, because bodies just keep dropping.
I like the addition of the Remembrance organization, giving Monica and company a concrete enemy that lasts through several books in the series. It makes Monica's involvement in these murder investigations more logical. I also like her relationship with Brian. However, overall the books lack depth, and while this one is entertaining, it's ultimately forgettable.
The Wysteria Werewolves are in the Romp a Roo finals, at the celebration of their teams victory, a player is found dead. One intense love potion is found by Monica and her familiar Abigail. Officer Brian and Monica's relationship heat up with a special date for Valentine's day.
Well, by a love potion anyway. Wisteria's Romp a Roo team finally makes it to the finals for the first time ever. However, before they can participate in the finals, one of their own is murdered. It's up to Monica and Abigail to solve it. Another wonderful addition to the Back Room Bookstore collection!
Couldn’t put this book down till the end. I loved this one about the family within the Romp A Roo game. I liked what happened with Abigail and her sentence. Hopefully the next one will say something about the team making the finals. Great job. !!! 👍👍👍
Enjoyed the book tremendously. Very entertaining. Especially enjoyed the outcome for Abigail and Monica. Eagerly awaiting the next book in this series.
