The Hunted

Rate this book

First they noticed the pets were missing, then the neighborhood of Rowena Heights started losing…people.

It was only later that they actually saw the packs of creatures stalking the streets at night. As the Mazurs get close to the truth about the night hunters, they discover the hunters aren’t what they thought at all. With the ravages of climate change altering the world as they watch, there’s nowhere to escape to. They’ll have to fight the night hunters to be the dominant species.

Though the Mazur family is brilliant and ready to fight back, they might not make it out alive.

something like Stephen King might write.
Don't go out at night or get cought been out at night because your never see daylight again.
Turn off all the lights in the house and don't make a sound, keep all the windows covered so they can't see in.
Tell your family that you love them .
Kiss your beloved pets goodbye because after this start your never see them again ' alive that is'
As for your neighbors will the smart ones might make it out alive , while others will you might be lucky to find during the day light pieces of them ,

Good gravy what a slog! The main characters are absolutely intent on making you dislike them with their, smarter and holier than thou attitudes. They're actually intensely moronic. Every chapter seems to rehash what was said in the previous. I seriously believe the author came up with that Faraday/Cage pun and was so proud of themselves they decided to make a really bad book to contain it.

Slight slight spoilers here.

Why did it take till 95% of the way through the book to say that 1 of the main characters had Karate training and not 2 pages later the other one had MMA training?

I will not be reading the rest of this series because, even though it was free, I want my money and my time back.

Edit: What happened to the kids guns? Why pick such a terrible name like 'Night Hunters' when they're supposedly so ungodly intelligent? Why was this book so obscenely long for a story that had ran out of ideas by page 100?

Wow! That was intense! I read the first 300 pages in one night, only stopping because my tablet needed recharging. I have loved this author since reading the first Nightshade book, but wasn't expecting this reaction.
Environmental apocalypse science fiction is an interesting genre, but usually too absurd to take seriously. This, on the other hand, seemed all too plausible. Rather than take on the "big" issues one usually sees, our characters are dealing with packs of dog-like animals moving in and killing pets and people. A real problem right now in some places, though not on this scale.
As a stand-alone, this totally works. There are no hints of the supernatural or fantasy in this book, so it works as just fiction. When one is fighting against zombies, vampires, a foreign army, or trolls, the bodies can pile up, and we cheer them on. When the enemy is a dog, or dog-like, it is uncomfortable and distressing, because we know and love dogs. Attempting to exterminate large numbers of them is sad and unsettling.
I am looking forward to seeing what happens in the next book.

Slow to start, but a nice read

Cage and Joule and their parents have a serious fight on their hands as they strive to fight the "dogs" taking over the town. If you are looking for a book to pull you in from the beginning, this one may not be it. If you push through, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. I think the underlying commentary about the impact of climate change is enough to make you think twice and hang km there until the end. I haven't decided if I will read the sequel, but I am considering it.

This is the first book of a series and takes place in the 'near' future where it seems that the planet is fighting back against humans, with the events spread out around the world. There are tornadoes, earthquakes, floods, all sorts of environmental incidents that are taking human life, but what the MCs and some other communities are facing, are packs of powerful, smart, and hard-to-kill dog-like creatures.

This book started off great, I couldn't wait to find out everything, but as I got to the 48% mark it was getting too much, the story wouldn't quit. It went around and around, 'let's try this, no we got to do it this way,’  ‘the reason she kicked ass way back at 48% was because she had two black belts, but waited until the 68% mark to let the reader know that info. So by that point, I lost a lot of respect for the story, and it dropped a star. The blah, blah, blah got old and irritating.

The MCs are 17 and are smart, know how to plan, think, fight, and all of a sudden they had a new talent that was just revealed. One of the MCs was more worried about getting tetanus AFTER being poked by a stick than when he got stabbed by a stiletto dipped in shoe polish a few chapters before. I couldn't stop myself from shaking my head and rolling my eyes.

I feel everything could've wrapped up by the 75% mark if there weren’t so many of the back and forth circles.

If only this story stayed on point, didn't stray in twenty different directions, and the author didn't keep adding those extras to the MCs but instead used those words to make the other characters in the story more life-like, I would've given it a few more stars.

2 stars.

The second book sounds interesting and it's been on my wish list, but now I don't know if I can read it knowing of all of the extra ramblings this first book contained. (The 3rd in the series doesn't sound that interesting.)

A lot of this book was unrealistic, contradictive, and I found so many spelling and grammar issues. It could have definitely done with a bit more editing. Not only that, but I found at least one false fact that could have easily been corrected (the raw chicken bones splintering. Only cooked chicken bones splinter).

The amount of times they said the word dog! Its not something that I'd normally notice, but its ALL the book was about, and it really started to get under my skin. There wasn't much world building or character development. Just dogs dogs dogs. It went on and on and just seemed to be about the same things over and over. It went from people never being able to leave their homes at night, police couldn't even kill the dogs with guns, yet a pair of teenagers were taking them out left and right with daggers and arrows?

If the end of the world is happening, why are people still even worried about going to school? Work? How are packages still being delivered? How can they go to the grocery store and have their windows replaced over and over. If the world was as bad as they were describing, it shouldn't have been that easy!

There was just a lot of inconsistencies and sometimes it really drug. So many unanswered questions as well! Were the "dogs" ever declared a new species? How could they be canines, yet their sense of smell was awful. What happened after the twins left? Did the dogs stop coming back? Maybe they would've been answered in the next books, I really don't know and I will never find out because I have no desire to continue.

I read some good reviews on this book and I had high hopes as I love a good dystopian (which I wouldn't even call this series), but it didn't do it for me.

I have read all A J Scudiere books and this one does not disappoint. The main characters were introduced in the Camelot Gambit a seventh book in the Nightshade Forensic Files series.
Joule and Cage are twins who now live in a small town with their parents. Something is going on. First all the pets disappear and then strange night noises.
The family decide to do something about the strange animals that have shown up.
At first, I had a little trouble because it was set just a little after the last book, but after suspended some belief, it became very interesting. It may have the characters that we met in the last book, but they have their own story unrelated to Nightshade.
The characters are strong and rely on each other, If you have read the wonderful series Vengeance. you can feel the same strong writing and imagery.
I read this book very slowly, taking my time to read every word which a sign is how much I enjoyed it
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book

Boring

I found this book a page Turner up until the third chapter. Then it went on and on ! Very boring and dull. The idea works but not how it played out…
The characters weren’t entertaining and everything seemed to take a long time to set the scene. Nothing dramatic happened after chapter two .

A decent plot - America is being devastated by the effects of climate change - floods, hurricanes, lots of Florida has sunk - and a surburban neighbourhood is being terrorised by killer dogs, or Night Hunters. One highly educated family trying to survive is the main narrative, which would be ok if they weren’t so irritatingly perfect; the teenage twins, about to graduate High School and with offers from multiple Ivy League schools are trained fighters, can perform autopsies on the dead animals, set traps, install complicated defensive systems in the family home, and even have time to study. The writing can be so slow you feel sometimes you’ve spent an hour on the same incident. The first part of a series that I don’t think I’ll be pursuing.

How to Stay Hopeful After Extreme Devastation

"...her mother had once told her for every downside, there was an upside. And that sometimes you'll lose, and you'll lose big, and it will hurt and it will suck—but there will always be some little upside. And maybe you could enjoy that." - from the book.

Firstly, don't let free time constraints put you off from choosing this (450 pages) long read. You'll find that the pages turn quickly because you won't want to put it down. I defy anyone who appreciates environmental apocalypse science fiction to say, "I couldn't get into it."

Likewise, don't be discouraged by not wanting to commit to a series. I suspect all the books could be read as stand-alones, but I'm compulsive. When given an advance review copy of book three, I saw that I already had book one and began at the beginning and I'm glad I did. But, there's no real cliffhanger at the end.

The story focuses on fraternal twins Joule and Faraday (Cage). Yes, their parents are scientists, and their training of the twins in scientific methods has better equipped them for surviving in a world that's having severe disruptions by the extreme effects of climate change. They didn't anticipate how wildlife would become a threat, however.

The Hunted centers on the 17-year-old twins, but it isn't a novel meant for a teen audience. Its horror overtones are from adult themes -- not the sex, swearing, and alcohol/drug use kind -- but bone-chilling events of a particularly shocking and gruesome nature. There aren't a lot of upsides.

I'm on to The Surface!

DNF. While I love the Nightshade files series, I did not get into this at all. I couldn’t make it past 25%. It just didn’t make sense to me and I didn’t like the characters or world building.

A struggle for survival!

What a great story in The Hunted by A. J. Scudiere. I am a big fan of this author! Whatever this author writes, I read. This author brings the story to life. The characters had a lot of depth, and were very intense and raw, and brought a lot to the story. I found it character and survival driven. I love it when a Legacy author sends me more of their work! This author has a great imagination. Joule and Cage are a remarkable pair, and this story puts them in the darkness, with someone's or some thing's sights on them. It's a race against the darkness and the hunters in order to survive. It is a very well-written story, and I enjoyed it. It is always an honor to read this author's stories. It's a great story to follow and try to figure out what will happen next. Action-packed and it takes the reader on a superb adventure. The Hunted is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I look forward to reading many more stories by this author.

I finally finished this book! With big apologies to the author for taking so darn long to do it. No excuse, just disorganised.

Cage and Joule live with their parents in the suburbs. Their lives are pretty normal - they go to school, their parents go to work, all good. Until pets start disappearing from the neighbourhood and packs of dogs start roaming around instead. Or are they really dogs?

This was quite the tale and I really enjoyed it! The two main characters are lovely and they are close, as a lot of twins are. Just as well, as these two have more to contend with than the average pair of teenagers.

There were parts of this book where I held my breath a little bit and wondered if things would work out ok for these two. They seemed to do surprisingly well, all things considered.

4 stars from me. And straight on to the next book in the series - it sounds good too!

I must admit that I am a huge fan of Scudiere's. While I won't list this as my favorite story of hers, I would say that it is a wonderful beginning to a new series. I would give it a solid 4 star rating. She fleshes out characters that were introduced in a previous series, although I will say that I found myself completely angered by the turn in character one of them had. I suppose grief can do this to a person. However I still was really angered.

Scudiere also brought back several characters from other series of hers. While it is nice to see all of her series exist within the same 'universe' so to speak, none of my favorite characters made an appearance. I guess we can't have everything.

An unusual

and unique story. Very different from most "thriller" novels, whether end of the world, apocalyptic or vampire and werewolves, this story is none of those things. It is a somewhat normal family on any given street who confront and conquer the unknown in a logical but exciting way.
Without spoiling the story, I will say, I'm not so sure the world (or neighbors for that matter) would react the way this was written. If anything, people would panic, overreact and behave ignorantly; but yes, some would behave just as predicted here.
I enjoyed this and loved the twins and their way of thinking.

A wonderful and unique story

I found this story quite engaging. Well written, well-developed characters and offered an unusual but unique storyline. I wasn't sure if I would enjoy this as the two protagonists are teenagers. No typical teenage angst in this story. I also was concerned after reading some negative reviews. I prefer to form my own opinion as some of the reviews were subjective. Also, this author has received Awards for her writing, so I disregarded the negativity. Very glad I did. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and read it in three sittings. I'm going to read the second in this series now.

Amazing!!DO NOT MISS THIS!!!

Another great book from A.J. Scudiere. I first read book number one in her nightshade series because it was free and sounded interesting. That was such a wow read that I immediately purchased the rest of the series. Now, while I wait for the next in that formidable series, I picked up The Hunted. What a great story!!! Cage and Joule are smart, brave, and resourceful. The emotional hit in the beginning was sad, the twist in the story original and intriguing. Preordered the second. Odd to get her other books.

Scudiere is one of my new favorite authors. I started by reading the 3rd in this series which I got for free and went out and bought this one right away.

In a world being ravaged by the effects of climate change, Joule and Cage Mazur must face an even more dangerous terror "Night Hunters". A new species of dog-like animals hunt people in the night. If they see you move, they hunt and destroy you.

I recommend this to anyone who likes sci-fi, apocalypse, or what the heck just happened books.

Spoiler alert!

I loved this book. It definitely pulled you in and kept you wanting more. The characters were developed nicely, and the storyline made you feel like you were right there with them. The only issue I had was that I don't like to leave anything unanswered. That's just my personal preference. I wanted to know what happened to their dad. I wanted to know what about the medicine changed the attack of the night hunters. Other than that, this was a glorious read, and I will be buying the next book in this series!

Page Turner!

Be prepared to not do anything until this book is finished! I was hooked from the very first page. The MCs have you rooting for them from the very beginning until the end and into the except from the next book in the series. The creatures hunting them are very well thought out. I love all the descriptions of the different things they try and the table turning hunts. Once I catch up on things I neglected while being absorbed in this book I am definitely checking out the rest of the series!

This was a DNF at 23%. I must be dumb since the author claims her books are:

"📖𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝘄𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘆, 𝘂𝗻𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲"

If that's not the most pretentious bullshit I've ever read, I don't know what is 🙄. I like twisty, I like unputdownable suspense, but I can guarantee that this isn't it. I have nothing new to add. I have the same complaint that the other 1 and 2 star reviews have said. I've already wasted enough time with this garbage. I'll go be dumb somewhere else.

Engrossing barely describes this one

So, I don’t normally write a review, because honestly, how often is a book so good that it actually deserves one? Well, this one deserves all the kudos I can give. Truthfully, this is one of the best books I have read in a while. The characters were so rich, and you love them so much that when you lose one, it hurts. I HIGHLY recommend you read this one. I just finished this, the first in the series, and can’t WAIT to read the rest!

Only made it a few chapters

Sorry, just couldn't take the inconsistenties. Mutant dogs that nobody had shot and killed and nobody was talking about but apparently where killing and eating people. Strong and powerful enough to break down doors but they thought they could capture in a foldable dog crate. Were eating pets and people but hadn't killed all the cows of the small farms around. Thinking hollow point bullets were designed to be armor piercing.
Just made no sense.

Not a bad thriller. Takes place in the near future when climate change has started to ravage the planet. A small community in Nebraska deals with a strange phenomenon killing members of the community. A brother and sister have to figure out what's causing the killings and how to stop them. I liked the mystery and hunting the creatures, though the ending was a little anticlimactic. Overall, a decent thriller.

Book #1 . Set in future. About a family of mother, father, twin teenagers. Families in their neighborhood are being hunted and killed by feral dogs. Even the police are being killed. Bullets don't stop the dogs? I couldn't get past 10% of this book. It was just not realistic. The world is already too preoccupied with clmate change disasters to put any attention to this dog problem. I usually like end-of-the-world type books but I just couldn't accept the premise of this one.

I just don't know...

I ended up skimming throughout the book. There's really no backstory, which this series desperately needs. Plus, the author really needs to read up on firearms and MMA. I had to slap my head so often with the ignorance on both subjects, I now have a flat spot
I'm glad I didn't have to pay for this book. If the rest are free, maybe I'll give the next one a go.

This was an enjoyable, hard-to-put-down read for me. There were a few editorial (and factual) issues - but nothing of such a magnitude as to distract me from the story. The story is fantastic by its nature. It is best to not try to puzzle/logic out how circumstances could arise where a major new predator just all of a sudden appears and wreaks havoc (or, if one does, why some guys with big guns aren't on the scene).

It was a fun read for me, and I was straight into the next in the series.

Great book

1st book I have read by her.
The plot is original, smart, easy to follow, unpredictabe but very believable

The characters well developed, likable and not invincible

Initially I was afraid this would be a teen hero book. Then it just took off and was a great read. I wish I could get book 2 now.

This is a book about a new species of "Dog". The 2 main characters are a brother and sister and how they learn to kill the new species of dog. It is a thrilling story with plenty of action and sorrow.
Very well written and the book keeps you wondering what will happen next. It is a very real scenario that could actually happen and that makes the book that much better.

Riveting!

I wasn’t sure what to expect with this series, but I’d really enjoyed the Nightshade Forensic Files. So I thought ‘ what the heck? Try it!’. OMG! This story had my undivided attention within the first 10 pages! I’ve made the decision to follow Joules and Cage through the rest of the series to see what trouble befalls them and how they manage to get out of it!
