Villainous Wonderland #1

Into the Madness

Rate this book

I didn’t fall into a place of wonder and madness...
I was taken!

This world is a perfect, enchanting wonderland. The people here are just as alluring...

But we all have our secrets...

Like the white rabbit who’s leading a rebellion right under the King’s nose. Or the sweet March Hare who’s actually an enemy spy. Or my one true ally in all of this, a killer who’s so feared they won’t even say his real name...

As for me, I have more secrets than all of them combined. Because Wonderland is waiting for the beloved Alice Liddell...

And I’m just the bitch pretending to be her!

This is a reverse harem series, recommended for readers 18 and over.

The door to Wonderland has always been open, with humans just popping in. But the kingdom doesn’t want just another human, they are waiting for Alice™️

And Maddison, our MC , is just the bitch pretending to be her

description

Ekkkk THAT IS SUCH A GOOD SET-UP!! I adore Alice in Wonderland. And this was one HOT cHaOtiC borderline psychotic fairy-retelling!!

This series is definitely an 'insanity rules the land' kind of book. Where if something doesn’t seem to make sense… that's because it fucking doesn’t. Not by our rules. It all be Wonderland and Wanderlust rules *shrugs*

The land of Wonderland is magical *yah no shit sherlock* but this means that being there changes you and gives you power. And some of these guys have been here for a long long time .... forever changed by the magic of Wonderland and Wanderlust.

“Wanderlust is like a feeling. But it’s also a sort of magic this world gives us. The longer you’re here, the more that magic settles into you.”

description

Introducing all of the characters!!

I really loved trying to figure out who was who. Which of the court fuckers is the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter, the March hare, etc. Everyone has a role to play, we are just still trying to figure out what those are muhahah

Maddison our "heroine" had a snarky attitude that she was willing to do whatever it took to keep herself alive. And I kinda loved it.

"Here’s the thing, I make really shitty decisions. I know I’m making them, and yet, I follow through with them anyway because, if I’m going to fuck something up, I should do it properly, right?"

Most MCs slack any sorta self-preservation but that was Maddison's defining characteristic. I mean she still didn't have any common sense but she WANTS to survive and it was great as she hilariously narrated chaotic events in her sassy and brash inner thoughts:

"His tone is this alluring sound only confirms that he’s a murderer. They’re charming, you know. Charming and alluring and they say charismatic things like there’s only one exit."

The love-interests, Alixx, Kais St. Croix, and Lighton are slowly being established as the ❀Reverse Harem Boyband❀ that has a pretty funny dynamic that develops over the series with each one focused on their own goals and reluctantly working together as needed... for Maddison ♥‿♥

"I swear this woman’s going to fuck up a Kingdom as well as a rebellion. History is full of beautiful women making stupid men do stupid fucking things to the point of destruction. That’s what I see when I look at this beautiful fucking woman: destruction."

As the first book, it's mostly fun-teasing-steamy and NO INSTA LOVE *thank you gawd* Which is pretty great start.

I adored getting know more about all these dark damaged boiiiiis--- each character’s past lead them to enter Wonderland, but they have their own reasons for staying. And develop amazing powers that are very linked to their personality

description

The mystery, the betrayal, the intrigue was written to both entice the readers and further the plot. It was just so creatively done and some parts were pretty fucking funny

“Trying to understand Madison Torrent is like trying to read a book.
In Latin.
During the middle of a hurricane.
On a life raft.
That’s sinking.”

Overall, this was definitely a dark re-telling of the iconic fairytale. Originally cute fun things were turned into mind-bending borderline psychotic shit. And I loved it. The series continues to build the world a little bit because in this book I gotta admit there were times I was really confused and overwhelmed by things. Which makes sense because that's how Maddison felt.

But nah fam. Readers want to have a more solid grip on the world in order to understand the significance of all the events and rebellion shit that seems to be going on.... and it is acoming!

"I need us to be friends of sorts. But she’s such a fucking mess she makes it impossible for me to breathe easy without wondering what she’s diving face first into next. Like Lighton’s cock."

Highly recommend checking out!

Maddison arrives in Wanderlust as the next hopeful "Alice". It seems everyone in Wanderlust has been waiting for Alice to come and mend the break between the two kingdoms (Wonderland being the second). Maddison quickly determines that she isn't Alice, but doesn't want to return to the real world where she's been diagnosed with cancer for the second time in her short life. She agrees to pretend to be Alice for the Rebel Hearts in order to stay in a world where she is cured.

This RH retelling of Alice in Wonderland is interesting so far. I wish I remembered the actual story enough to figure out who is which character and what they are supposed to do, but I will have to figure it out right along with Maddison. Maddison figured out pretty early that she is actually the Mad Hatter, so it should be interesting to see what mischief she gets into as the series progresses. I'm intrigued enough to continue reading to find out. I will also say that this book is a bit better than the last couple I've read by the author. I hope my expectations are met with the next book.

Wow. This really made me feel things. I got super attached to all the characters. Each one is quite the puzzle but so easily relatable. This is a very unique spin on Alice in wonderland, and held my attention from start to finish. If you like Alice in Wonderland, but want something unique with real danger, mystery, madness and twists this is definitely for you. Cannot wait for the second book. 100% recommend.

I struggle with retellings because usually its the same old story with smut, smut and more smut thrown in. This one takes the idea of the characters and makes its own mould. A girl that doesn't want to be Alice, three damaged guys and a king. Admittedly there is plenty of foreplay and sexual references, but over all the relationship building is there, with multiple POVs.

I loved all three guys, their burdens and the potential of each character. After Alixx I'd say my favourite character was Profit. Mad herself is strong despite her past and I look forward to the next book, especially after the teaser at the end.

3 stars — There were a lot of intriguing elements in this story, but in the end I was just confused…and like, everything from vaguely confused to seriously confused. And that just took me out of the story, and didn’t make me want to continue in the series. I actually almost DNF’d at 74%, but then that seemed stupid, so I continued.

There were some fantastic one-liners, and snarky quotes I highlighted. I could really see some of the genius in some of the things that Ms. Koonce was doing.

Unfortunately, I was never a huge Alice in Wonderland fan, so if there were subtle nods in a lot of places, then I didn’t follow them. I’m the kind of person that hates being in the dark, but if I’m going to be, I want to be thrown some bones here and there…and I felt like sometimes I’d be thrown bones only to have them taken away from me later. I stopped trusting anything I learned. And my impatience for answers got the better of me on more than one occasion.

My other problem is that I had a hard time connecting with any of the characters. I’m not saying I didn’t connect with them at all…they each had some glimmers of depth that intrigued me…but in the end not enough for me to root for any of them. I still don’t understand the point of what they’re trying to achieve, so then I don’t understand the stakes, and the desired outcome.

Madison was cool, but ultimately not someone I could imagine being friends with. She was very hung up on sex…which is fine, but then I hoped we’d get more steamy scenes. I did enjoy the little we got there.

I did NOT see what she saw in Alixx. I mean, I got the heart stuff, but OMG, he was not a good person. And I only sort of got Kais…he didn’t have a lot of redeeming qualities either, and I’m not sure why she trusted him. Light was pretty much the only one I got. I got his pain, I got his coping, and I enjoyed the few sweet moments.

Basically it was just too much, with not enough clear. I LOVE when things are clear, and so that frustrated me.

4.5 as I really enjoyed this.

So, I'm a bit of a sicker for dark Alice in Wonderland re-tellings and when you add Reverse Harem it's even better!

Although, I'd say this is very loosely a re-tellings and that's one of its strengths when the RH Alice thjng has been done a lot in this genre.

Maddison's had it rough in her 20 years. A survivors of childhood leukemia, her mother dies just before she is recently rediagnosed. Whilst the tortured female MC trope is used a lot, to be honest Maddison is not a 'woe is me' character and this makes her the more likeable for it. After a pathetic encounter with a boy at a Uni party she drinks too much wine in the beach and promptly find herself dragged under the water by an inked hand.

This is loosely based on the original Alice. The kingdom she wakes up in is not Wonderland. That kingdom is shut off from people like her, or newcomers who find their way to the realm. Instead they are cast into Wanderlust, a side kingdom which is impoverished. Only the fated Alice Liddel, upon her entry, can marry the King and somehow reunite Wanderlust with Wonderland and ease the people's suffering.

I'll admit the world building is a bit confusing, but then there's a certain amount of this to be expected in an Alice retelling. What I really loved were the characters, their interactions and the overall tone of the book.

I was hesitant to start this, but I'm so glad I did, as it's the beat RH retelling of Alice I've read since Stunich's, which is one of my favourite RH series ever.

Just going to come right out and say that I have a soft spot for all Alice and Wonderland retellings. There is just something about the wonder and madness in Wonderland that really sucks me in. That being said this author really does a great job capitalizing on that sense of chaos and confusion here in the start of this series. At first I felt that the feel of the book was so fitting, but after a while I'm began wondering if the author threw chaos on the page and called it Wonderland. The original story of Alice is story about making/creating sense in/of discord and its not looking good for the home team here.

Maddison, our FMC, just got diagnosed with cancer.. again. This time she already knows she isn't going to win the fight and has resigned herself to her fate and at the same time has decided to go out with a bang. Only, she didn't realize loosing her virginity was going to be this difficult.. all she wants is one tiny orgasm before she kicks the bucket. Is that too much to ask for? After her partners drunken attempt and failure to do the deed Maddison finds herself on the beach shouting at the heavens for a freaking break. Then she is pulled under the water.. and down the rabbit hole to speak by a smoking hot stranger. This stranger takes her to a place she thought was just a fairytale. Kais and Underland are in dire need of an Alice.. and he isn't above faking one to protect his people. Maddison agrees to the scam because one her cancer has been cured somehow, and because 2 this is the first time she has felt like she is where she belongs.. only she is pretending to be someone else.. Maddison is trying to make the connections, to figure out what her real role in this story is but all these feelings are getting in the way.. and she still just wants a dang orgasm.. Now it seems like the price for her lies is a loveless marriage to tweedle dumber and having to put up with tweedle dumb too. If only someone can save her from this tragedy.. maybe a real Alice..

I'm hoping this author can pull this off as the series continues come I'm up confused creek right now with no paddle in sight and someone forgot to pack my floaty.. my boats taking on water.. and.. is that a waterfall up ahead?... Yea anyways you get my drift.. (hehe drift). Ok I'm done. All in all despite the fact that the Characters aren't too terribly rounded, and the fact that the FMC has smut on the brain 24-7-368 (:P.. its wonderland we don't know how many days are really in a year) it was entertaining if not a little on the twilight zone side. I am going to go ahead and admit I will be continuing this series in hopes the author is going to pull a rabbit out of that hatters.. hat *wink*.

Ouch, that ending!

FMC is a human 20 year old virgin, she's not had an easy life, and she's now alone. Her recent diagnosis adds to it all, and she just wants a break! The opening chapter is hilarious, by the way, and yea, that kind of shit can and does happen... the Guy and leg bit... not the going to wonderlust bit.

We meet 3 handsome men in wonderland, well there are more but these 3 are the MMCs. The different ships she develops with them, their different character traits, and unravelling pasts and current positions in this plot make for a strong character build in just the 1st book. By the end, I want to hate one, hug one, and slap one... you will see.

The politics of the world, the side characters, the glimpses, and twists make for a fun read. The spice is high and steamy, and when we get smex, it's hot 🔥

Overall, I need more, back into wonderlust I go!

Well what can I say this was a good start to the series. I liked the world that was being built and liked the characters. Madison isn't your usual female and its refreshing. I like her potty mouth and mind. it'll be interesting to see how this turns into a reverse harem book as it seems all the guys hate each other. All the fighting and bickering is funny.

I have to admit that I'm a fan of AK Koonce's other works. So when I heard that she was writing a take on Alice in Wonderland, I was very intrigued.

WOW. I was not disappointed at all! I'm a fan of retellings, especially when the author puts their very own individual twist on things, that are similar to the original, but not really. This is definitely one of those tales.

The opening scene alone made me chuckle, (I'll not say why, you'll have to read it for yourself) but the wit, and one liners is woven through with a variety of characters each taking a part in the sark and sass.

I'm hooked on this series and looking forward to more soon!

First, I feel like I must confess that I’m an Alice in Wonderland fanatic and I love all things wonderland. Wether that is the original or the reimagined. So before I even opened this book I was already hooked.

This book, true to Koonce’s form, grabs you and pulls you in from the very first page with Madison, the snarky FMC. She grew up being an outcast, due to something a child should never have to go through, and it made her a little bitter and hardened. After an awkward encounter, Madison finds herself in a place that can only be described as terrifyingly dangerous and beautiful.

Throughout the book she meets many unsavory and alluring characters and creatures such as the white rabbit, the March hare and the king of hearts. Each person seems to be much more than what they appear on the outside and seem to have their own agenda. All while Madison is doing her best to be the “Alice” that this magical place needs.

This book has many twists and turns. While there are nods towards characters from the original Alice in wonderland, each character has an immeasurable depth to them. Koonce has a way of immersing you into this world and it’s inhabitants. You quickly fall in love with the hardness of the quiet white rabbit, the quirkiness of the emotionally damaged March hare and the deep secrets of the lonesome rotter.

I had a hard time putting this book down for any length of time and I am looking forward to seeing how the rest of the series plays out.

I received this book as an ARC.

THAT ENDING THOUGH. Like bam, blindsided (in the best of ways). OK, you're right, I should begin at the beginning and go on until I come to the end (then stop). I am a huge Alice in Wonderland nerd as well as being a fairy tale retellings fanatic, so when I saw this twist on Alice in Wonderland I knew I needed to read it. AND BOY, I was not disappointed!

This is a steamy reverse-harem romance and it's my favorite type of borderline-erotica, with PLENTY of really hot sexual tension as well as a plot I actually care about. WHAAAAT?! It can be done!! Madison gets pulled into Wanderlust, which is sort of a poor man's Wonderland because the fancy folk in Wonderland proper don't want all these newcomers in their space. I love Madison's reasoning out of which characters from the novel each person she meets is - and sometimes she's right but others she is way off base and only later realizes who the character ACTUALLY is. (The Tweedles are my FAVORITE example of this!) Also, she never really figures him out but my money is on Alixx being the Jabberwocky. Read this book and tell me if you agree!!

Like any truly GREAT reverse harem romance, I really am not sure who I'm rooting for as the #1 love interest. (Which is fine, because Madison doesn't know either). A.K. Koonce does a really great job making Kais, Light, and Alixx all very different men, but all very compelling as well. I feel like each of them touches a different part of Alice. (No, not in the literal, physical sense! ...But okay, kind of that too, haha.)

The title/info says this is part of The Villainous Wonderland Series, but as of writing this review I don't see any info for more books. I hope there will be more, because the way it ends there is DEFINITELY an open door (heh heh), but it does say THE END and not TO BE CONTINUED on the final page. A.K. Koonce, if you're reading this, PLEASE WRITE MORE IN THIS SERIES!! *big sad begging Puss in Boots eyes*

This was an ok start to the series. Given there are only three books none of the characters really made an impact on me. Recently I’ve read a few Alice in Wonderland retellings, the closest to this would be CM Stunich’s Underland series. Like in the Underland series I occasionally had a hard time remembering whose POV we were in and who within the Alice world that character was. Luckily while this too is a RH series Alice isn’t prophesied for eight men, it kept things a bit easier to follow. Topside “Alice” aka Madison has leukemia. Her life has an expiration date and when she’s stolen down to Wanderlust she decides to embrace her new chance at life. The people of Wanderlust have been waiting 100+ years for the prophesied Alice to come and basically save the Kingdom. Unfortunately given that Madison was wearing an Alice in Wonderland costume when she was taken everyone below believes she’s there to save the day. I don’t really know if I agree with her decision to give up her life and pretend to be the savior just because she’s the closest they’ve come and who knows when the real one would arrive. While I didn’t connect with any of the characters really I’m curious to see where the story will go and how their relationship will progress. Most of the guys don’t seem interested in an RH relationship so I can’t wait to see how she convinces them all. Also now that the pressure of being the Alice is off of her will she be able to go off and live freely amongst Wanderlust or are the twins going to want her head for deceiving them? Time will tell, I know I’m not looking forward to more of the twins, they are just too weird together and they really give off a creepy vibe 🤷🏼‍♀️

I really enjoyed this book. Unlike most reverse harem books, it didnt jump straight into insta love and sex. There is a connection and lots of chemistry, but it was nice seeing more interaction than action. It will be interesting to see how this story develops from here going forward now that all the key characters seem to be in place.

I really loved this book! Did alot of it make sense? Honestly no 😜 But does Alice in wonderland? Also no.
Madison is great! Her men...
Also great! They are all so different. And potentially the villains!?! But who doesn't love a villain. Can't wait to continue on the story.

This started way differently then I expected. I think looking back it’s good it was a little slow to build up. Still very sexy and gave me just a taste of what I wanted.

Adored all of the men. They all had really great, distinct characterization. Each had their charm and each had their bad - and I love a good mortally grey character.

I had expected a little more action but I’m satisfied with the scene with Alixx/Madison.

For a story about Wonderland, it lacked 'wonder'.

Excellent
1) The king and his sister were wonderfully 'mad'

Good
1) Series arc was clearly established
2) The men had their own stories and their own voices
3) The few smut scenes were good

Mediocre
1) The relationship-building lacked shared emotion

Mixed
1) The female lead, in of herself, was quite entertaining but, when it came to her inner monologues, her obsessive focus on the men turned her into a immature boycrazy cliche

Bad
1) Outside of the king and his sister, the 'madness' of Wonderland was severely lacking
2) World-building was thin to non-existent
3) Settings, especially given it was Wonderland, were unimaginative
4) The plot was more of a framing device than a sequence of events
5) The 'Cheshire Cat' was flat

Needed a lot more 'wonder' and a lot less of the female lead overthinking the men.

Having read the other two installments of the trilogy, I don't recommend this serial because

This book was very interesting to me. You know some times books that are based off of Alice in wonderland can not turn out well....this is not one of those books.

This book makes you fall in love with imperfections. Everyone in this story has their issues and it just makes you love them so much more.

Th author does a great job playing off the Alice in wonderland theme. I'm glad I decided to read this book.....you won't be disappointed.

This was a freaking fantastic start to a RH retelling! Maddison is dragged to Wanderlust because she’s the next maybe Alice. Everyone needs Alice to show up so the two kingdoms can reunite. Maddison knows she isn’t Alice, but she’s free of her cancer and is determined to do whatever it takes to stay. The Twins were freaky- I don’t even know how else to explain them or how Wanderlust’s citizens puts up with them. The men are sexy and horrible people, but so is Maddison. The world building was extremely vivid and I felt like I was along for the whole deceitful and sinful ride. I love watching Maddison try to figure out who everyone is from the classic tale and learn that she’s wrong a couple of times. If you’re looking for heroes, this isn’t the book for you. I think I’ve finally fallen into villain heaven and I never want to leave! I haven’t read many Alice retellings, but hot damn this one was on fire and had me hooked from the very first page. I had so much trouble putting this book down because I needed more of this amazing twisted world and it’s messed up characters.

Reaching into the stores of books I have horded on my Kindle for God knows how long, because we ARE (YES, STILL ARE . Despite some of you looneys with your "if its my time it's my time" bologna) on lockdown.

And good gracious Have I been in one HELL of a book slump....

Which is great considering ALL THE GD TIME I HAVE TO READ NOW..

I've had this book just chilling on my kindle for a while now. I remember picking it up after finishing C.M. Stunich's Harem of Hearts series. Because something I found that I really reallllyy enjoyed?
A harem? Well, Duh. But also anything themed, hinted at, or pertaining to Alice in Wonderland.

There is truly something so enchanting about a land filled with people and creatures that defy logic, wield magic of questionable sorts, and the Madness. AH the Glorious Madness.

While I will be the first to say that this was somewhat of a slow build as far as romance goes. We get the idea of who Madison (or The Alice as everyone so kindly refers to her as without her OK) will be with, but not a real idea of who could be potential enemies, allies, or just what in the F**k has happened to Wonderland (or pardon me, Underland). We also are constantly being reminded that...Madison really isn't...super special... Yes is her Alice number still red? Yep, but everyone constantly refers to her as probably not the real Alice..

Is this as confusing in review as it is in my head......probably..

I really like how Koonce has taken the A.I.W. premise and kind of made it into something entirely their own. Rather than Alice (Madison) falling down a rabbit hole, she get pulled into the ocean. Rather than having characters clearly portraying a character from the original A.I.W., we find that all is not as it actually appears to be, or who they seem to be (which come on, it's an Alice in Wonderland sort, it's going to take you for a trip.)

It does leave you on a bit of a cliffhanger but I'm really interested to see the purpose of Madison being there, and how her relationship builds with her three suitors.

Now, can anyone point me in the direction of my own Harem having Wonderland?
That'd be great thanks.

This was a unique, fun, and quick read!
I’m a huge Alice fan myself so I had to pick this up right away and I really enjoyed it.
It got my heart racing, it was funny, and absolutely steamy!!

I got pulled in immediately, I mean this book cured my reading slump with the opening lines alone!
”no, that’s…my hip not my clit. Austin, stop rubbing it, it’s not a magic lamp”
A-FUCKING-MEN.

I like that during reading this book you think you know what’s going on and you think you have the characters all figured out (I.e, matching them up with Alice in Wonderland) but then you end up being WAY wrong; it brings such a unique twist the entire plot, especially finding out that Madison isn’t really the elusive Alice that they are looking for (so they say…however, the cover and her name hint at who she may be?)

Talk about a shocker and a really unique spin for a retelling!
Which brings me to the freaking cliffhanger!

“Excuse me? I’m terribly sorry to interrupt this lovely wedding, but I seem to be lost”

OMG.
WHAT?!
I NEED to immediately see how this plays out!!
The plot is feeling a bit chaotic still for me but I’m hoping it develops and becomes a bit more complex in the second book. Part of me wants to believe that the purpose of this delivery is for me to feel slightly out of sorts, as In experiencing a pinch of the madness that is occurring in WonderLust maybe? Just throwing it out there but I’m intrigued to see how it progresses…

The true loyalties and motives of each of the guys is still confusing for me so I need more on that as well.

In terms of her relationships (if you can call them that yet) with the 3 guys on the docket right now, I’m so Invested and so excited to watch the tensions build!
I’m practically salivating for the smut scenes, I loved that they were spontaneous and written SO well; safe to say I was throughly entranced.

I’m curious to see if any more guys will be joining the harem (I hope so!) and I’m eager to find out where it all leaves our girl following what occurred in the end of this book.

Pretty great first impression and speeding to pick up the next one!

This is book 1 in The Villainous Wonderland Series by A.K. Koonce.

Excellent book! It does start a little slow, but the pacing picks up.

Madison Torrent is anything but normal. Having cancer... twice. Will do that to a person. She has lost everyone and is completely alone in the world. All she wants to do is to LIVE. She wants to experience what "normal" people experience. Well, she gets a huge dose of "be careful of what you wish for."

Madison is taken to WonderLUST, not WonderLAND by Kais. Who instructs her that she is "the Alice" and that he is her advisor. Early on, it shows that Madison can't possibly be Alice, but Kais isn't willing to give up the opportunity to unite the two kingdoms of Wonderlust and Wonderland.

Alice is "pure innocence." Which Madison clearly lacks, even with her lack of experiences. Slowly but surely, she starts to fall for the very men she shouldn't. The men who are assassins, traitors, and spies. The very men who can make her panties drop with just a crooked mischievous smirk.

She gets hurt time and time again, and everyone is just so confused about what they want. Regardless, though, Madison MUST be the Alice. Wonderlust needs her.

What she thought might be her happily ever after slowly turns into a nightmare, and she has no idea what she has signed up for. As resilient as she is, she isn't going to give up. She will make Wonderlust a better place.

Spice is only about a 1/5. There are only a few scenes towards the end, but I don't mind considering that A.K. Koonce is giving a HEFTY build-up for not only what Madison is going to do but also each of her relationships with the different men.

PLEASE BE ADVISED THIS ENDS ON A DROP YOUR JAW CLIFFHANGER!

I'm looking forward to book 2!

Another Alice retelling! Huzzah! I love them so much.

I was quite entertained with this concept. There are several instances of Madison being an unreliable narrator through just reading the situation wrong or having inexperience, and I got caught off guard with who everyone really was. One of the fun parts for me with these retellings is seeing the parallels with the original work, and I LOVED trying to figure out who everyone was. Kudos to the author for mixing it up and making us have to work for it. So fun!

There's a lot more tension/character & plot lead-up here than romance, though I'm sure that will happen in later installments. As it stands with this book, the three men in question are all on vastly opposing sides and I'm not sure how that's going to be resolved. (I mean, one of them has been killing off the other's friends, so...) Overall though, I like that the villains are actually villains and that they do some questionable things. It kept it interesting. Also, the plot is very compelling and I have a lot of questions. Now, onto the second one!

Tropes: reverse harem (though the males definitely aren't getting along in this installment); dark fantasy; rebellious angsty new adult Alice archetype meets 3 villainous men of Wonderland; multiple POV by chapter; slow burn, though with much tension leading up; crude language throughout; loss of virginity; blood, death, murder; drug use, substance use, and mentions of past addictions; cancer and other illness; political/court intrigue; lies, conspiracy theories, and dark thoughts.

Heat rating: HOT—sex scenes throughout with explicit language, which adds to the overall story and relationships.

Such a unique and truly awesome book!

Oh man.
I have found another book to add to my absolutely favorites, and I have a feeling that the entire series will be included as well.
A.K. Koonce has such a brilliant mind, and you can really see it in this book. Her spin on the Alice in Wonderland theme is so unique, as are her bad ass characters.
There is ALWAYS something about the bad boys, and you can’t help but fall in love with each one.
Madison, our heroine of the story is so awesome. I love how strong and brave she is. She isn’t afraid to put it all on the line. She takes on each task as a warrior, and after all she has been through on the surface world, it is easy to understand exactly why she fights the way she does.
This book is such a brilliant start for what I can only imagine is going to be a wonderful series, full of villains you can’t help but love, and strength in the hardest of times.
I see so much potential in each character, and this storyline had me hooked from page 1.
I started reading this book early this morning, and literally didn’t put it down until it was done.
I am SO excited for what is to come next in Within the Wonder.
I highly, highly recommend this 5 star read!

Being the queen of bad decisions can feel reckless but relaxing at the same time. When you are going to mess up, you may as well do it proper-like. And this is how we meet Madison, our pretend Alice. She has quite the past. Then, one evening after she was terribly disappointed with her choice of man in an attempt to sow some wild oats, she finds herself in a mysterious world where all things are a bit wonky. One thing that I love about Madison is, even though the hand she was dealt was crap, she ends up being a fighter. This Wonderland is definitely a darker version than we are used to and the characters are very, very different. Madison even chuckles to herself throughout the book as she is putting together which person is who from the Alice in Wonderland fairytale that we all know. I was very intrigued as the story continued and pieces came together. There is a lot of angst, snark and wit. However, “Alice” (who is really Madison) is promised to another and these men cannot go any further with her. It is tension filled, but the wait is totally worth it because once the collision occurs, fireworks explode…and nooooot with you think it will be!!!! What I am saying here is, this is a must read. Stay tuned because I am going in for the next book!

I loved this book! It started out a little rough and, I’m not gonna lie, I even considered DNFing it, but I pushed through because I felt like the story had the potential to go places... and I was so right!! After the first 15% or so, the book started to really pick up and after that I could not put it down for the life of me! I fell in love with this dark Wonderland and these twisted versions of classic characters that I thought I knew.

Madison I love Madison as a character. She’s flawed and not perfect in any way. She makes mistakes and does stupid things sometimes, but that just makes her more relatable in my eyes!

The Guys- My Lord Jesus... I need a fan because these guys are so incredibly hot! I have always been a sucker for the morally grey male characters and these guys are at the top of the list! They’re flawed and broken, borderline villainous, and take what they want! I couldn’t ask for better! I AM SO IN LOVE. I CAN’T EVEN!!!!

Overall, I obviously highly enjoyed this book. I could not give it more praise if I tried and I am DYING to get my hands on the next installment!
