Review: Well, this wasn’t terrible but……it did lack depth on a few fronts that rendered the novel passable.

The most limiting factor of this installment was the lack of character development. I know the author tried to build a little humanity into Liane with quirky smiles and a budding love interest but failed to pull off anything believable. There is something about maintaining a sterile persona when you’re an agency built killer as it gives the reader something to hope for and gains the character some personal separation for the acts that must ensue. If the hints at humanity are brief and well placed you gain so much more depth than say, turning a killer into a love-sick strumpet.

Secondly, the story line is not new as the author would lead you to believe. There is nothing new under the sun here and added to what is fairly pedantic writing is the synthesis of every made-for-movie espionage novel. Just adding in “mods” or serums does not a creative novel make.

The ending is what you expect for a series to continue along in the same vein. I think this author needs to take an innate talent and risk herself on the creative side in order to realize the depth hoped for.

The second book takes the reader further into the world and allows for a larger understanding of how the Agency and Libertas Party hold such power.

We meet back up with Liane and Seth as they run and hide from the agency. Since Liane uncovered the truth the Agency had been hiding from the world and even their agents, she is empowered to end the injustice and stop them. Despite efforts to stay hidden from those hunting them, Liane and Seth find themselves overpowered by agents until mysterious helps shows up and saves them. The Black Sun is a group of mods working toward the destruction of the Agency and to bring down the oppressive party. Liane is not quick to trust but must think of her safety and that of Seth. Owen is the leader of the Black Sun and also a former Agent. He keeps Liane's identity and secret from the rest of the mods and give her and Seth places amongst the group. Unfortunately, Liane's abilities start to waiver and her health declines from unknown reasons. Her vulnerability causes problems and even using the leftover Titan Strain does not seem to help. Damian continues to hunt for her and longs for her to be by his side after he seeks more and more power in the party. He knows her time is limited due to the Osiris Contingency and he is the one who can save her. Liane continues to be torn between the her two worlds and is powerless to completely break free. The plans of the Black Sun are soon revealed to her and once again she is forced to obey or lose Seth and her own life. Despite her fading abilities, Liane powers through struggles and uses her determination to continue her fight for truth and freedom.

I enjoyed the conflict Liane faces between Seth and Damian and the two lives they offer to her. This book builds on the personalities and reveals more about history that led to the present conflict. Looking forward to the next part of the story!

This is a super fun read! Move through, underneath, and above the streets of an alt-future London with Liane and Seth as they continue their quest to take down the Agency.

In the second installment of The Genetics Chronicles, Virginia Soenksen continues the story of The Titan Strain and its effects on London’s post-war political and social structures. Liane, a genetically-modified, trained assassin fights to establish her identity and priorities now that she’s free from her Handler’s physical and emotional grip. She’s the Agency’s most dangerous weapon, and now she’s working against them; but she can’t do it alone. Along with her well-intentioned (but un-modified) companion, Seth Laski, Liane must find allies in her fight for justice. But who can she really trust? Not all is as it seems, as is usual in politics.

Virginia does an excellent job of weaving together the emotional fallout of Liane’s abuse at the hands of the Agency along with action-packed fight sequences, political cat-and-mouse games, and just the tiniest hint of sexual tension.

Favorite book so far of the trilogy! I was able to preview an advanced copy of this book. AMAZING BOOK! Not my normal genre, but I was extremely engrossed and invested in the outcome. Lianne and Seth continue to be my favorites and I couldn’t put the book down, I had to keep reading! I anxiously await the last book of the trilogy and highly recommend this as a must read.

Thanks to NetGalley for an ARC in return for my honest review.

This was a really great book. Once i started to read i realized how much i missed this characters. I liked reading Seth and Liane's relationship. The Osiris Contingency was more action packed than the first one. It was a page turner book and it ended with a cliffhanger. I can't wait to read more of this story.
