Rate this book
Return to Lake View Middle School in the third book of the PERFECT SCORE series from the beloved author of Because of Mr. Terupt.

Eighth grade promises to be an unforgettable year of tears, laughter, surprises, and star power.

GAVIN's days of football glory have arrived, but an accident on the home front upends his family. Ever enterprising, NATALIE anchors a morning news broadcast at school--where she's unafraid to tackle big issues. Being on the outs with his best friend sucks, but the more TREVOR tries to patch things up, the worse things get. Sidelined with a gymnastics injury, RANDI develops a bad attitude and worries that her mom's new boyfriend means changes she won't like. SCOTT discovers hidden talents . . . and becomes a secret weapon on and off the football field.

It's the final year of middle school--a time to play hard, smart, and together!

***Thanks to NetGalley for providing me a complimentary copy of THE PERFECT STAR by Rob Buyea***

5 BRIGHT STARS

Rob Buyea is a gift to middle grade readers. In the third and final book in THE PERFECT SCORE series Natalie, Randi, Trevor, Scott, Mark and Gavin are faced with new challenges in eight grade including, friendships tested, injuries, financial difficulties, death, sex discrimination, illness, changing families and forgiveness.

The young teens each have distinctive, complex personalities carried over from the previous two books and each grows through overcoming difficulties. As with the MISTER TERRUPT series, Buyea addresses different challenges the kids experience, not always naming those difficulties overtly, in a manner than engages not just middle grade readers, but younger and older kids as well.

I can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t enjoy THE PERFECT STAR and all of Buyea’s books.

WOWOWOWOWOWOWOW

This was my most anticipated release of 2019 and my goodness did it deliver.

The issues explored in this one, like always, are handled well. This time around, we tackle sexism, death, consent, friends fighting, bullying, financial issues, running away, injuries, and the confusion and awkwardness that comes with developing romantic feelings for a childhood friend.

The kids in this one are equally as amazing as they were in the first two.

GAVIN
After an accident involving his father, Gavin enlists the help of his younger sister, Meggie to make things right.

RANDI
In the last book, we were told that Randi’s mother, is seeing a man named Jacob. In this book, Randi has a few issues with that.

NATALIE
After the success of the newspaper club from the last book, Natalie decides to start a morning broadcast at Lake View Middle School and covers more than one difficult topic on her show.

SCOTT
Once the players on the football team notice Scott’s talents, he becomes the team’s secret weapon.

TREVOR
After Trevor and Natalie start dating at the end of the previous book, Trevor can’t seem to stop thinking about her. What he doesn’t notice is the effect that’s having on his friendship with his best friend, Mark.

Perfect for fans of Rob Buyea's previous books, NBC's THIS IS US, and R.J. Palacio's WONDER

Overall, the second book was probably my favorite in the series but still, a beautiful ending to a fantastic trilogy.

Definitely purchasing the physical copy, as well as the audiobook in October.

UPDATE: I’ve read it twice now, and I cried more the second time

Did anyone else cry during this book? I certainly did. I cried sad tears and happy tears, and I don't usually cry during books unless they're really, really good and well-written. I hope there are going to be more books in this series coming out, because there is still some more room for plot drama. For instance, I really want to see more romance between Gavin and Randi. They are going to high school, after all. I was also really sad when Coach died, but he made it out to be not so depressing by throwing a celebration in honor of Coach instead of a funeral. I feel like I'm with the characters while I'm reading this series, and the character development is well done. (Seriously, Rob Buyea NEEDS to write more in this series). I have also read the Mr. Terupt series and LOVED it. I was really sad when it ended in only 3 books, and this is another reason why I hope he writes more books to this series (sorry if I'm being too redundant). Rob Buyea is one of the world's best authors and should DEFINITELY be more recognized and more people should read his books. Thank you for this wonderful series, Rob Buyea! Also shout-out to the narrators of the books - they do an excellent job and capture the characters well!

A sweet middle grade book, but kinda a disappointment tbh. This authors previous series was my favourite series in grade 6 and I also really liked the first two books in this series.

I liked the foreshadowing at the end of chapters close the start of the book, but then the foreshadowing just got too repetitive and I got tired of it quite fast.

There was no clear plot throughout the series and I kinda felt like things were all over the place. I would say I liked the plot because I did, but it's the same as the previous books.

A lot of things that happened were also very unbelievable as everything that happened was immediately solved so fast. For example, the team was very nervous about having a female football coach because they thought they would lose every game, but instead they win every game in their season. Sure, it's obviously great that a female coach is so good at coaching, but winning every game is a very unrealistic and might give off a wrong impression.

I did like the characters though, and some topics were very thought-provoking.
It also may be that I'm a lot older now and this type of book is just not for me anymore. I'm sure that if I was 12 again, I would have given this 5 stars

[I received an electronic review copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.]

4.5 stars. Loved this! A great wrap up to the middle school careers of these students. This book doesn't really center around one thing - like state testing or a crusade to reconcile estranged family members. It focuses more on the growth and development of these kids and their relationships with one another and the adults in their lives. This looks at friendship, family, dating, football, homelessness, bullying, insurance and health care, grief and loss, etc. There's a lot going on here, but it flowed well as each student shared the story at times.

Rob Buyea is my favorite author when it comes to stories with multiple points of view. Each of the kids has a clear voice and perspective and their stories build on one another so well. Fans of this series and of Buyea's work in general should not miss this one!

I loved this third installment in the Perfect Score series. I agree with other readers that Rob Buyea is a gift to middle school readers. Such great life lessons he teaches and readers fall in love with the main characters. I also enjoy the multiple perspectives and foreshadowing throughout the book. Looking forward to reading Because of Mr. Terupt #4!

Trilogy finished. This book was more melodramatic. Not that that is bad, but I'm glad I am finished.

It's the last year of middle school for the Recruits, and it's going to be a year of change and revelation (would you expect anything less?). Football hero Gavin has a nail-biting time thinking that there will be no football coach which will affect his ability to play in high school and thus get a college scholarship (I think), but at the last minute the team is saved--by Coach's daughter, of all people. Will the team be able to weather the firestorm of negativity about having a (lord forbid) WOMAN coaching football? Scott, the big-hearted, impulsive recruit is determined that Mrs. Magenta won't find out about at least some of the negativity, which of course causes an incident. Later, Scott discovers his talent for filming documentaries when the recruits host a new morning newscast for the school, hosted (of course) by Natalie. Natalie herself is having some deep thoughts about an adult who was awful to Gavin in the past and is now in jail; how can an evil person have such a sweet son as the little boy she sees at an after school center? What drove him to do what he did? Trevor, meanwhile, is enjoying having Natalie as his girlfriend--except that it's caused a rift between him and his best friend. Meanwhile again, Randi has been sidelined from gymnastics by an ACL tear, and she's worried about her mother marrying again and moving them away. It's an eventful year, with tragedy and triumph abounding.

I do enjoy Buyea's episodic stories in many voices. The kids are distinctive and easy to sympathize with even when making mistakes. There's always a bit too much didacticism in the books, but at this point, you kind of go into a Buyea book expecting that. I'm glad that he makes use of modern media (at least a little), so kids will connect with it better, and that he shows how it can be abused as well as used well. Thanks to Natalie, one instance of tech being used by a bully isn't as awful as it easily could have been. Overall, I can see why kids like his books.

I've now read every book in this series and wish it never ended. I love this realistic fiction series like none before! I'm generally more of a Harry Potter girl, but this book had me on the edge of my seat. I loved it. If you are reading this review you have to read this book. I need you to. The only exception is if you haven't read the other 2 books prior to this one. Then read them all! You're in for a massive treat. This book is good for middle schoolers.

I did not enjoy this as much as the first 2 in the series, but that being said it was still a book worth reading for those who read the others. It is a middle school level book about middle school students. My 11 year son is enjoying the series

Rob Buyea might be my current favorite author. After finishing this trilogy and also reading the Mr. Terupt series, I cannot wait for his next book. Because of the way he writes from multiple perspectives, it is so easy to connect with the characters. Each student has a unique personality and I feel the heartbreak they feel in the book. This author has an immense power and I cannot read his books without laughing and crying. I seriously cannot get enough.

The Perfect Star is the third book in Buyea's trilogy that includes The Perfect Score and the Perfect Secret. I love that we were able to meet up with these characters again. My middle school daughter also read this book as she has loved the other two in this series. Although we both agree that this is not our favorite of the three, it is still good and provides some closure to a variety of storylines.

This. Book. Was. AMAZING. I absolutely LOVED IT!! It was so incredible I literally can barely describe it. I thought that it was one of the most heartwarming, inspiring, and amazing books I’ve ever read. As I was reading it, I actually got tears in my eyes, and that never happens to me. Not once. Rob Buyea just has this talent to make you feel everything that the characters are feeling. And he is just such an amazing writer. This book deserves more than five stars. A lot more. For whoever reads this review... please, PLEASE read this book. Do yourself a favor.

Gavin, Natalie, Trevor, Randi and Scott are back for their 8th grade year. With no coach for the football team, Gavin may not get to play again this year; Randi suffers an injury at gymnastics, but she's also worried about her mother's new boyfriend - what if things get serious? Natalie starts a school news show, and Scott - well, he's still making questionable choices.

I'm always excited to see another book by Buyea, and the Perfect Star wraps up this trilogy nicely. While it's been over a year since "The Perfect Secret" Buyea gets the reader caught up efficiently and naturally. This is a series that does need to be read in order, so if you are buying, get all 3.

Another year in the life of the Recruits! In their eighth grade year, Gavin, Randi, Natalie, Scott and Trevor not only find their voices; they also learn that they have the power to take action in their lives. Come along for the ride as these five kids experience the highs and lows that can come in a single year of growing up!
I will say one more thing: part of why I am such a fan of Rob Buyea's books is because I can always count on them for a happy ending. If you feel the same, be forewarned: this may be sadder than you expect, but it will touch you all the same.

This one is a 3.5 for me, and I must confess that I love the students of Lake View Middle School. While some of what happens with these eighth graders seems pretty unlikely, their resilience and loyalty to one another and their determination to do the right thing leave me impressed and hoping that other middle graders will learn from their mistakes and their examples. Fans of this author will recognize all the characters from The Perfect Score and The Perfect Secret, the previous two books in this series, as well as the book's format, which moves from one character to the next in short sections told by one of the five protagonists. They're all dealing with challenges of some sort, and not only are these students seemingly cut from real life, but the way the author ends each section with hints about events yet to come--love that foreshadowing--almost guarantees that readers will have to read on to find out what happens. In their own ways, each of them will rise to become a perfect star, but so will someone else dear to each of them. Gavin's thrilled to put all of last year's disappointments behind him and excel on the football field, but how can he do that without a coach? Natalie gets involved with the school's morning broadcast and starts thinking that there's more to last year's villain than meets the eye. Her romance with Trevor continues to heat up, but it just might cost him his best friend unless he can fix things. Randi's high-flying gymnastic antics come to a halt after an injury, and she has far too much time on her hands to worry about her mother's new relationship and the changes it might bring to her life. And Scott finds his own way to shine in unexpected ways. Maybe it's unlikely that some of the changes of heart described here would occur so easily, but the author's vision of the world seems hopeful and positive. These youngsters are dealing with real, relatable issues and problems that often don't have easy answers, making the book and the series as addictive as eating some crunchy potato chips. If you read one page, you'll want to read the rest, and if you read one book by Rob Buyea, you'll want to read the rest of his work.

This was one of my most anticipated release of 2019 and it did not disappoint.

The issues explored in this one, like always, are handled well. Yet despite the heavy issues touched on in this book, it does not feel heavy, Buyeau beautifully mixes the humor and seriousness.

I would recommend The Perfect Star to fans of Rob Buyea's previous books, R.J. Palacio's Wonder and to students who enjoy ensemble stories and realistic fiction.

Reading the Perfect Star by Rob Buyea is like opening a portal into another world. It is the last book in a great series, and is the best one. It has great suspense and plot twists that won’t let you put it down. The amazing theme of sometimes you are willing to do anything for people you love, really makes the book special, and is like looking into a mirror to reflect on your life. The author wants the reader to know this, because it is a good lesson in life, and could really affect what the reader does in his/her life.

This is a realistic fiction book that is told from multiple perspectives. Gavin is a quarterback for football, but he learns a great lesson about family. Randi is Gavin’s best friend and a great gymnast that will always help her friends. Natalie is a very smart girl who wants to become a lawyer when she is older, and she tries to help an old enemy. Trevor is Natalie’s girlfriend, and plays football on Gavin’s team. He is a former bully who learns a great lesson about friendship. And last but not least, there’s Scott. He is a kid with great ideas and the stats man for Gavin’s football team. The group starts a morning broadcasting group where they cover sports stats, the weather, and information about their school field trip.

Personally, I loved this book and it is one of my favorites ever. I read this book in 2 days, because I couldn’t put it down, with all of the suspense it created. On page 310 it states, “Either Meggie’s play had worked-or it hadn’t. Only time would tell.” This is a great example, because it shows a part where you don’t know what’s going to happen, and you have to keep reading to find out. Another reason I loved this book, is because you really got to know the characters throughout the series. On page 215 it says, “You guys win and I’ll make sure we have cotton candy.” This is a great part in the book to show we know the characters, because you know when the principal mentions cotton candy, Scott is going to get excited and tell everyone. The last reason I loved this book, is because it created emotions. When Coach died, it made you feel really sad, but when they got enough money to support Gavin, it made me feel happy for them.

This book is great for anyone in middle school, because they can relate to the characters and their feelings. Anyone can like this book, because it is not about one specific topic, but multiple that anyone would love.

omg!!! i loved this book so much, it was the PERFECT ENDING (pun intended?)... but anyway- here's a list of things i enjoyed and also didnt enjoy about the book:

Enjoyed:
-look on racism!!! i like it when books take notice of real life things, big or small. :)
-trevor + natalie! i really enjoyed them being a couple since they were so different (especially in the perfect score)
-randi's "beliefs". yeah idk what to call it, but i love how she believes in destiny and stuff!! i find it pretty interesting, and i feel it makes her unique :)
-the whole book, literally. it was written so well!!!! i enjoyed every bit of it.

didn't enjoy:
-cliff hanger (ALMOST). i was hoping that i would get to see randi's and gavin's relationship before the end, but nope... now im just gonna have to wait and see if another book comes out!!! :( and i guess the fact we'll never know what happens in high school (unless another book comes out) is disappointing...

very much enjoyed this book, though!!! :)
