The third book of the five-book Female, Recreational series, published between January 2017 and January 2021. It deals explicitly with sex and other topics, and is meant for readers over 18. The woman reached inside the sheets of her legal pad, drew forth a small picture, slid it across the table to Hannah. It was a recent picture, Raven in shorts and a tank top, with her arm around Uncle Bear’s shoulder, her head tilted to touch his, seated at the marina where Uncle Bear was working now. Both smiling, the lake behind them on a sunny day. “That’s her,” Hannah said, with small lump in her throat. “That’s her, with Uncle Bear. Or, um, Gerald. Gerald Dupre.” “Very good,” Sylvia said. She reached into her legal pad again, pulled out a single sheet and slid it and a pen across to Hannah. “Before we proceed, Hannah,” Sylvia said, “I’ll need you to sign something.” Hannah looked at the document. At the top was a heading in heavy black “Agreement of Non-Disclosure and Confidentiality.” Hannah scanned the words quickly. It required her to promise not to reveal the nature of her conversation with anyone at Dimper and Dimper, on this or any other matter, nor to discuss anything that happened while she was in a Dimper and Dimper facility, or under Dimper and Dimper’s authority in any other location. Violation of the terms meant a variety of consequences, including legal action against her or her owners, and additional, unspecified punishments, “as allowable by law, policy or custom.” Her name and ID number, and the Petrosyan’s address, had already been filled out, so she just signed it at the bottom and slid it back. Sylvia looked at the form, returned it to a place within her legal pad, looked at Hannah and leaned forward. “How long have you known Raven?” she asked. “Thirteen or 14 months,” Hannah said. “I met her right after the Petrosyans bought me. The same day.” “You said you were very close?” “Yes, Ma’am,” Hannah said. “We would, um, be together once or twice a week, sometimes more.” “Be together?” “Yes. She’d sleep with me. Or, in a cage next to mine. But they’d leave the door open, so we—” “You were intimate?” Sylvia asked. “Yes, Ma’am. I mean, as friends. Or as really close friends.” “But you would have sexual relations?” “Yes, Ma’am. We’re not really lesbians. But it was just, um, something we did. We were allowed to. Or we were expected to, sort of. I was supposed to—” “Did you talk a lot?” “Yes, Ma’am, all the time,” Hannah said. “We had sex, but mostly we talked. A lot.” “What about?” “Everything, really,” Hannah said. “Our families, who we were with, how things worked, that kind of—” “How things worked?” “Yeah. Raven was seven when her parents died, and—” “How things worked?” “Yes.” “What do you mean, how things worked?”
Oh, how happy was I to waken one day and find that Female, Recreational III had been published! The main character, Hannah - a very expensive sex slave - is one of my favorite, most beloved characters in all books that I have ever read. Perhaps, that is a sad statement about me and my literary chops. It may well be. But, then again, perhaps you should read and decide for yourself.
For, in Hannah, we have a character that is utterly sympathetic to the reader in all ways. She is too expensive for her owners to allow to remain unguarded and thus spends most of her time kenneled or in fetters. Yet, she is loved (in a way) and she loves (in a full-hearted way). Though she is in chains, she is utterly free when it comes to sexual pleasure. Just as a professional athlete would naturally exercise in the off-season. There is no question from her handlers that she will need to maintain her sexual skills on a daily basis. The veil of shame and sexual repression has been lifted from her and what we see is a brilliant character living in a different paradigm than any other you may encounter.
Hannah is not just all sex though. She also has a brilliant mind, ever eager to learn and experience. In this book, Hannah has matured a little. She has had the time to consider her lot in life and she arrives at some very radical conclusions. “I have been imprisoned. Wrongly,” she determines. And, “It is the duty of all of those wrongly imprisoned to challenge their confinement. To escape, in mind if not body. To sabotage.” And finally, “No matter the cost.”
Hannah loves her owners like a family. She is allowed to visit her birth mother. She is allowed to take online college courses and apply for a position at a university. She is allowed to submit research papers in order to receive a scholarship. She is allowed to hold congress carnally with her fellow slaves. So, Hannah’s rebellion is not some constant string of out-lashings, but rather something much more subtle and brilliant and subversive and devastating. A lot of the fun is watching her plan evolve and observing her gentle steps through small deceits, each corporally punishable, ever towards a grand reckoning.
And so, once again, I must do no less than recommend this book. It is such a thrill to observe Hannah and her interactions amongst a host of other wonderful characters as she navigates her world of minor injustices and the consequences of trying to right wrongs - the sacrifice one may need to make for justice for all. Concepts that play marvelously against the backdrop of real-world America. This is a thinking-person’s tale mixed thick with erotica and social commentary.
And… I hope, whole heartedly, not the end of Hannah’s story…
This is the third book in the series so by now you probably know this series is about a future America where slavery is legalized and the story centers on the life of Hannah, an 18yr old who was free but poor and turned into property to pay her mothers debts. With her looks and age she was marketed as “recreational” ie for sex, purchased by a family for their college son Allain. The book focuses on her time being housed aka kenneled at college and the day to day life she leads as she studies, serves her owner and spends her time having sex with other “subjects” (slaves).
The best part about this installment is that there’s actually a decent story arc. This book is tagged as BDSM and categorized as erotica but I find myself reading it because I’m invested to see where all of Hannah’s efforts to “fight the system” lead to. The sex scenes are graphically described but there is really no love or passion behind them so they don’t really do anything for me as a reader. As far as the BDSM tag, I would say if you are looking for kinky BDSM, this is not that kind of book. There are restraints and punishment so this is more akin to the classical definition of bondage, not “lifestyle” or “scene/role-play” that you might get out of erotica written specifically for those interested in BDSM.
I was astonished at the authors ability to tap into all of the emotions regarding the ownership of a human being. Pros and cons, the sex not withstanding, it dug into my mind how we as a human race could delve so deeply into this. It is not so far from a future reality!
I started to read the series for the erotica. In this part, I am skimming through the sex parts and I read it for the story. I have to agree that the BDSM part is not alluring any more. I, however, give credit to the authour for writing such a gripping story.
I am waiting the next part and hope for a satisfying, happy ending.
Wonderfully clever plot with humor, drama and a powerful erotic charge. A dystopian novel to remember. The adventures of Hannah have a long way to run. I can scarcely wait for the next installment.
Who would've thought that you're just looking for a little titillating story but then stumble into a very compelling story about something so much heavier and deeper where you skip over the sex scenes and into the meat of the plot.
