Unexpected Commander

Rate this book
She's shy and timid. He's unsocial and arrogant.

Yon's past hardened him to the point that he speaks the raw truth without thinking about the consequences. He's always been that way, but if he's not careful he's going lose more than the sweetest female he's ever known, he's going to lose a potential mate.

Yelena's past conditioned her to be obedient and silent. She's always been a loner, but when she meets Yon in the cages of Brica, she’s drawn to him and his strength. If only he’d notice she’s not as weak as he thinks she is.

Yelena has a chance to help find the Numan who turned her skin luminescent. During the mission something goes wrong and she has to rely on Yon once more... or is it Yon who has to rely on her?

Note to reader: This is a slow burn, science fiction romance with a twist of action and adventure. This is the third book in the series. It’s recommended to start at Book 1.

Hi,

A little more about me, I live in Southern California, with my two kids, and a trio of fur babies.

I work full time in the aerospace industry with some amazing scientist that were fundamental when brain storming new technologies for my universe.

I also have a culinary degree that is worthless because my kids love hotdogs, chicken nuggets and mac & cheese. But at least they love my birthday cakes so, I'll take that as a win.

I have a management and leadership degree that is utilized most when negotiating with my children and organizing time between writing, cleaning and family movie-night.

I prefer Star Trek over Star Wars. And when I'm being lazy, I like to read WTF Facts on Pintrest.

Learning To Live Again💞

Alpha Male Adult Sci-fi Romance💞 and Adventure🚀

From Fifty years as a slave hard rock miner in the Brica mines, to ship maintenance employee, Yelena💃💋💔, an Allus, has been rescued at long last. However, her physiology was vastly changed by artificial means when she was forced to become a miner long ago.

Yon🐺🔫🔪 is a Yunkin/ Demon warrior who is the Commander on the ship🚀. There are several kinds of demons, red demons, night demons, silk demons, and roth demons.

He sees something in Yelena💃💋💔 that fasinates him, she has so much potential. He is on a slow 🔥burn for her, but Yelena💃💋💔 knows from the second she met Yon🐺🔫🔪, that he was the one for her.

ARC Received from Booksprout🌱
I also got this book with KU.

I enjoyed this book, although it was slow moving for a sci-fi. It's a great story of a dominant male warrior and his interest in Yelena💃💋💔 A former slave, who just wants to find her place. She wants to fit in, she wants to belong to Yon🐶🔫🔪.
There are characters from the previous books throughout this book since they all serve on The same ship🚀.

I thought that this was a good read. Lots of emotions and drama are mixed with action and intensity in the interesting story line. As for the characters I liked Yelena more than Yon, but honestly I had a hard time connecting with either to the level I would have liked. I am posting a candid, voluntary review.

Yelena had been kidnapped and experiments conducted on her at the Numan lab, but she had no idea why. Now she and others were being herded off a transport onto a barren, rocky, desert-like planet with no explanation. They had made her skin luminous and a side-effect was that she was internally cold constantly, shivering and unable to get warm. Her sensitive skin also bled easily if she got injured. They were herded into an underground auditorium.

She soon found out why she was cold all the time. The captives were now going to be miners. The rare mineral rock they would be gathering, Phosephenite, is temperature-sensitive and at ninety-one degrees, it explodes. So each miner must stand 5 feet apart or the increase in their combined temperature would cause an explosion and they would die. For 50 years she had lived in a cramped cave with 9 others, constantly cold. Now they had mined the last of the mineral and Yelena was hoping they would return them all home. But the next day, they learned they would be going to another mine, not home. And her best and only friend, Cami, was put in the sphere with phosephenite with another person and exploded to death because she was getting old and slowing down. Yelena never spoke for 9 months after that – until they were preparing to move everyone to the next mine.

A Yunkin Federation warrior, Yon, asked if her skin was actually glowing, and feeling drawn to him, she responded it was. Her time in the mines had given her fifty years of experience working with airflow, compressors, and generators so that she was perfect for an equipment repair job on the Garna star carrier. Her life was changing yet again.

Two of Yelena’s mated friends, Vivra and Pax, invited her to go to Lotus Adaamas for a fun evening. Pax was friends with Commander Yon and invited him to join them, although Yon hated the noise and hated Lotus Adaamas where his druggie mother still lived. Yon heard Pax call to Yelena. He remembered her and was concerned the locals would swarm her and take advantage of her. According to Pax, they were already bothering her. She was too sweet and innocent to leave her there without protection. Several hours later, he was still worried and went down to check on her. Pax said she went with Clalls to a jewelry district – but he spotted Clalls in a corner with someone else! Yelena was unprotected and by herself somewhere! He told Pax he was only trying to keep her safe – but his crew knew it was more than that.

This was a slow-burn romance that I thought was done well. It seems that both Yon and Yelena have problems relating to others due to their histories. Yet Yelena took immediate notice of Yon when she was in the cage in preparation for transport to a new mine. He likewise was intrigued by her and worried about her safety. He even put aside his strong dislike of Lotus Adaamas to head there and confirm her safety – which turned out to be a wise choice! These two have more adventure coming up as Yelena pursues a mission that goes wrong. Will they give in to their attraction and find love through their adversity? I really did like the character of Yon, seeing his concern for Yelena, and understanding how he keeps his feelings so guarded. Grab your copy and see how everything works out for them.

I love, love at first sight books and this story is not that but I found that I really liked the slow burn romance. Due to this we get to know the characters more and get a better understanding of them. Also, with a slow burn, the romance builds up, which makes it more believable.
There is sex towards the end and I felt it did not need it. The last few chapters had a lot of it, it felt like the author had to stick it all in because there was nothing in the beginning or middle. For me this bought it down. My other negative point is the commander who I have to admit I did not like and the female I felt did the running around to get his attention. I can understand he had issues, but I did not connect with him. I wanted the female to go and find someone else. In my opinion he was not worth her time. Because of this I did not feel the connection between the two characters towards the end.
What I did like was the slow burn romance, the world building, back story of both the main characters, the dual POV (I loved this, not enough author do it) and the twist I did not see coming.
It says that you must read book one and two to get a better understanding, but I did not feel I was missing anything. It felt like a standalone, but this is my opinion and you might get more information on other characters or background story if you read the first two in the series.

JERKS NEED LOVE, TOO
As always, Layla Stone immerses us into a fully realized sci fi world, with crazy useful tech that is used by the characters with the same off handed familiarity as we would a toaster or smart phone. This book, while part of a series, can be read as a stand alone, even thought some of the characters overlap.
But let me say this up front, Yon (the Commander in the title) is a jerk, and pretty much STAYS a jerk throughout the book. The romance that built was, as the author herself called it, a "slow burn" and the real story took a little while to get going.
Yon and his love interest, Yelena both seem a bit puzzled by their attraction to each other, and see-saw quite a bit before their love story hits it stride, so much so that it take a major event (no spoilers) for them to just surrender to it. I would have loved to get a bit more into Yelena and Yon's heads during their "slow burn" to really understand their struggles.
The twists at the end were interesting, and I would have liked to see more of (name excluded)'s transition, and the inevitable screw ups that would follow.
All in all, an enjoyable read by author who is getting better with every book, and as I said before, Jerks need Love, too.

I MIGHT HAVE BEEN A BIT LOST BECAUSE I STARTED THIS SERIES WITH THIS BOOK SO I COULDN'T FULLY APPRECIATE THE STORY.

HERO was more like an asshole but I loved it. I'm always more for stony, rigid male characters who have to bumble their way through romance. Unfortunately, Yon was too stiff for me. You'd think there was a capitulation of high feelings or passion but even the sex scenes fell short for me. His connection with Yelena didn't feel natural because he was often oppressing and subduing her be it actions or emotions.

HEROINE was neutral ground. She's been a captive who worked in a mine for fifty years and poorly treated. The story starts with her rescue and life aboard a ship and where she has met Yon, harbouring feelings for him. Yelena isn't a spunky heroine, she's submissive with heart.

OVERALL it wasn't a grand romance or even passionate in the right way for me. Would have loved to like it though.

Wow what a fantastic slow burn romance with Yelena and Yon, Yelena had been kidnapped and experimented on she was cold all the time but there is a reason for that, she was taken to the mines and mine for minerals that was heat sensitive so they had the workers a few feet apart because if they give off any heat then the minerals will explode. So for 50 years Yelena lived in a cave with the other workers they were the same as her but now they have mined the cave out and Yelena was hoping to go home but she was put in a cage to be taken to another mine. Yon is a Yunkin demon warrior and captain of his ship he is intrigued by the glow of Yelena’s skin he is also worried for her safety but Zyon is always grumpy and a bit of a jerk but the attraction is there towards Yelena. Fantastic story but there is so much going on in this story it will keep you reading right up until the end and I highly recommend this book it’s definitely well worth the read.

Yelena kidnapped changed into a self illuminating Flourg to slave in the mine then rescued.
Allus Yelena had been kidnapped experimented on to make her a self illuminating Floug and an ideal slave to work in the mines. For fifty years she slaves in the mines making friends with a human turn Floug Cami then watching as she was murdered until one day they all are rescued. Her years in the mines had given her the expertise to get a job on the star carrier Garna working on ventilation, compressors, and generators and she was starting to feel free. She is intrigued by the Yunkin/Demon officer Yon a man of few words and rather grumpy. They both have problems relating to others that they need to overcome.

I love how this series is being developed. The bigger arc which spans the series develops continuously and without pause while each book focuses on a set of characters and their own development. This instance is Yelena's quest for freedom after being rescued from the mines and the connection she shares with Yon who strives to make only honourable decisions to honour part of his DNA and supressing his other side. it's a great story about Yelena finding her steonger self, and Yon learning to balance his cold, calculating and sarcastic side with the softness necessary for dealing with feelings.

I can’t help but smile at Yon’s arrogance, all the same he is still lovable and I love his protectiveness over Yelena. And his love for her changed something in him that turned out to be unexpected.

But the greatest hero, or should I say heroine, in the story is Yelena. I cant imagine what she went through, being a slave miner and then witnessing her best friend being killed right before her eyes. That was difficult, but she was strong and survived.

This is a true scifi slow burn romance. The storyline was good, and characters I found to be opposites. I loved how Yon refused to acknowledge the his attraction to Yelena until he couldn't any longer. I found the characters very likeable and well developed. Just a really entertaining read.

I came in expecting to really enjoy this book but in the end the hero was such a controlling and moody ass - and worst, he NEVER really got any better. In fact, he needed to turn part cyborg to "turn off" his emotional pathways to "control" his anger issues.

I know this is a romance book but I was still rooting hopelessly for the female lead to find a better guy - any guy.

The story picks up with Yelena and Yon. Yelena is grieving over loss while Yon tried to ignore his attraction to her. As with all the Unexpected stories, unexpected and/or exciting things happen along the way to love. Read the whole series - you won't regret it!

Great story! I enjoyed the slow burn romance. Yon doesn’t seem like one to jump right into a relationship anyway! I really enjoy the Unexpected Series, the characters are unique but work together so well.

Fierce and protective!

Yon knew she would be his, he just needed to make her understand that, Yelena wanted the warrior the minute she saw him and she was determined to have him he just didn’t know it yet. When the one you want to claim drives you crazy what do you do, you give in and claim what’s yours! I loved this book as much as the first 2 and I look forward to the next one. A definite recommend

Umm so this guy rescued a woman who has been imprisoned for 50 as a slave. He's big, strong, and just barks orders with demands.

Of course this frail alien suffering through extreme grief with the death of her only friend, 'falls in love" with this demanding beast 2 months after being released.

Oh yes this was a real joy to read.

I still love Pax the best but who can’t resist a love story between a strong brooding alpha-male alien and a cute little uber-shy alien female. Sweet story but now sure how the ‘new-Yon’ will develop in upcoming stories......which, in case anyone doesn’t know 😜 I HATE WAITING FOR!!

Good read

Not a lot of action. I was expecting Yon to need more time
to get used to his cybernetics... I also expected that they would have more than 1 child. And what genes do they take after??
I want more maybe an epilogue??
