I was born in a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri named Bridgeton. During my time in Missouri, I explored the Ozarks, swam in the Mississippi River, played kickball and endless games of hide and seek with the neighborhood kids. Spending summers in Kentucky with my Grandmother, Ruth, are the fondest childhood memories for me.

At the age of thirteen, my family moved to Wisconsin to learn to farm. Yes, learn to farm! That was interesting. Taking city kids and throwing them on a farm with twenty-eight cows purchased from the Humane Society because they had been abused, was interesting. I learned to milk cows, the ins and outs of a breeding schedule, feeding schedule and the never ending haying in the summer and trying to stay warm in the winter. Our first winter in Wisconsin, we had thirty-six inches of snow in one storm and were snowed in our house for three days! Needless to say, I wasn’t loving Wisconsin.

I am now married with four children and three grandchildren. I have learned to love Wisconsin, though I still hate snow. Wisconsin and the United States are beautiful and my husband and I travel around by motorcycle seeing new sites and meeting new people. It never ceases to amaze me how many people are interested in where we are going and what we have seen along the way. At every gas station, restaurant and hotel, we have people come up to us and ask us about what we are doing and offering advice on which roads in the area are better than others and great rides others have been on if we are interested.

I come from a family of veterans. My grandfather, father, brother and two of my sons and one daughter-in-law are all veterans. Needless to say, I am proud. Proud to be an American and proud of the service my amazing family has given.

Defending Sophie by PJ Fiala
Book 2 of the Ghost series. Protective former military men defending and investigating corruption or helping someone in trouble. Romantic suspense. Can be read as a stand-alone.
Sophie is investigating her friend’s suspicious death and finds herself on the run and accused of murder. She calls Gage, who brings his resources to help find out the truth.

Suspenseful and engaging, the story is fast and twisty.
Rape triggers from the past but not to the heroine in the story.
Sophie is in the military and I admired her strength in running and endurance. More, the kindly woman who is willing to help someone in need is so admirable and makes me want to do more for the local women’s shelter. Donation on the way.

DNF at 5%.

I cannot get over the fact that the heroine didn't memorize a phone number. She has a phone number on a scrap of paper. She buys a burner phone and puts the number in there and throws away the scrap paper "so they don't associate the number with me".

What!?

1. Why did you not memorize the number?
2. Why did you not worry about putting the number in the phone when you're worried you would be found with the paper?
3. Why did you throw away the paper?
4. Why don't you have ANY other way to contact him other than the number in your phone!?

It just makes me want to hit my head against the wall. Who is on the run for their life and cannot keep an important phone number on them!?

Let's start off by saying this was our first read by this author and we throughly enjoyed our first read by them.

The story had you enmeshed in the story right from the beginning as it started off with a bang and drew you right in.The story was suspenseful and intriguing and one twisted plot that kept us glued to the pages the entire time.

Loved Sophie and Gaige and Hawk they made a great team.We loved the suspenseful story that was filled with chemistry and intrigue, murder, sexy times, forging new friendships and also reviving a friendship that fell to the wayside.

Sophie is in trouble and the only one she trusts to turn to is Gaige her brothers best friend who runs a elite company called G.H.O.S.T where they make amazing things happen. Gaige is Sophie's last resort and the man of her dreams that she has been crushing on since her childhood.

The story heated up quite a bit when these two decided to act on their feelings when both of them spoke up about how they have always felt about one another. We loved the amazing chemistry this couple had as they were super hot together and perfect from one another as Sophie would have no problem fitting into Gaige's company and then men he considers family.

We loved the story from beginning to end as so much was going on constantly to keep you turning the pages and we loved how the whole story unfolded because the story kept you guessing the entire time and I have to say that there were so many pieces to unravel things weren't looking good for a bit but, through sure endurance and a whole lot of team work secret after secret kept coming to light and more then than a few surprises we didn't see coming and we just love when that happens.

Overall a fantastic read and we are looking forward to continuing they rest of this series.Recommended read to all !

Sophie is running for her life because she knows too much. She frantically calls Gaige, her boyhood crush who she hasn't seen in years, to help her just before she's attacked. Gaige, one of the GHOST team creators, grabs an extra team member just in case he needs help and, heads toward Sophie. Gaige is somewhat hesitant about this because, Sophie hasn't told him anything about her problems but, since she has always been the one woman he can't forget, he is determined to do whatever he can to keep her safe. Once Gaige finds Sophie and, she tells him her story, he realizes he is going to have to employ all team members for this case and, pull in quite a few other favors!
This is a super charged, hold on for dear life, read that you won't be able to put down!
If you love Romantic Suspense, you REALLY need to read this book!!!

This talented author has started her new series with a home run in Defending Sophie.
Gaige Vickers, is former military, and now runs GHOST.
Sophie Turner, is in the Army and currently running for her life after being accused of murder.
Desperate for help, Sophie calls Gaige, a man that not only was her deceased brother’s best friend, and one she trusts, but also the one she’s been half in love for over 20 years.
Gaige will do anything for Sophie and engages the GHOST group to assist him.
Will they survive the conspiracy? Will Sophie and Gaige finally divulge their feelings?
The story is filled with non-stop action, suspense, bad guys, conspiracy, hunky good guys, and romance.
The main characters are complex and the secondary are just as engaging. Hoping that some of them get their stories.

If you are looking for a book that will leave you on the edge of your seat and unable to put it down -look no further. Running for her life, Sophie calls on her deceased brother's best friend, and highly classified private secret operative, Gaige for help. What she does not realize is that Gaige has dreamed of connecting with her for years but was afraid to go against the bro code. Caught up in a wild ride of lies, deception, rape and murder the two not only figure out the mystery but also find each other. But can a relationship based on as simple spark be enough once the danger has passed? I love, love, loved these characters!! PJ Fiala has a way of combining fast paced action and characters you want to hug. I cannot wait for more in this series!!

Sophie and Gaige have known each other since she was a teenager. They felt the attraction, but due to circumstances neither one acts on the attraction. When Sophie finds herself in trouble she calls Gaige, the only person she believes she can trust. The problems they face keep twisting and turning and no one knows who can be trusted. Will they live long enough to unravel the mysteries that keep coming at them? Are Sophie and Gaiges feelings strong enough to last beyond the adreneline fueled mission?

Love this book!!!

OMG this is a fantastic read. I love kickass heroines, but Sophie is one of my favourites because we also see a vulnerable, feminine side to her which doesn't take away from her combative side. Fast paced plot with great characters. I loved this one. I received an ARC of this book and chose to leave a review.

Wow...Wow... I simply loved Defending Sophie by PJ Fiala. This was my very first book by her and will not be my last. A MUST read!!!!

Sophie is on the run after her best friend is found dead. Sophie starts to notice some things happening and she then becomes the target of a man that wants her to have the same fate as Kate. She needs help clearing her name and turns to the only person left that she can trust, Gaige. He is her brothers best friend and the only person she can trust. PJ takes us on a wild goose chase on the streets of California trying to figure out what happened to Kate and why someone wants to frame Sophie. Gaige and his group of men get to work. We get everything all rolled up in one book, great twists, turns and an awesome plot. Oh and some great chemistry between Sophie and Gaige. I simply love Sophie and Gaige and I LOVE how the words just flow and it’s impossible to stop reading. I can’t wait for more in this series!

Defending Sophie is part of the Special Forces Fan Fiction world by Susan Stoker, and let me tell you PJ has smacked this one out of this world. The books fits so perfectly into the world and is right up there with a Susan book.

I definitely recommend getting Defending Sophie, you will absolutely love it.

Thank you so much for a fantastic book and for letting me read it!!!

I tried so hard to get into this book and it just didn't happen. I couldn't connect with the characters and I just couldn't keep myself interested. I don't know whether maybe I'm just not feeling the book or what. But I just couldn't get into it at all.

This was an excellent read. You have all the action, betrayals, steam and mystery you could want. Sophie is active duty Army but she's on the run, accused of murder, AWOL and trying to find out who murdered her best friend. She calls Gaige for help. Her, Gaige and her brother Tate grew up together and she has always loved Gaige and vice versa. I love GiGi who helped Sophie when she needed it.

Sophie is investigating her friend's death, having suspicions about the circumstances. But when her informant turns up dead, Sophie is the first person they suspect. Having no other choice but to hide, there's only one person that can help clear her name and find the real killer, all while keeping her alive...her brother's best friend.

Gaige has wanted Sophie for a long time, but never acted on it in deference to who she is and his friendship with her brother. But when he learns she's in danger, he doesn't hesitate to step in. Then there's the fact things aren't adding up, but Gaige trusts Sophie.

As Gaige and Sophie spend time together, old feelings resurface, though they never fully faded, and danger dodges their steps as they work to discover what's going on.

Can Gaige protect Sophie and find out who is after her and why? Was she getting too close to the truth about her friend's death? Will the close proximity to Gaige be too much for them to resist? Or will they maintain their distance and deny their growing love in memory of Sophie's late brother?

One-click now and follow along as two people may finally get the chance to have their forever. I enjoyed this plot, the danger to Sophie only adding more tension to the situation. I wish it hadn't taken them so long to finally get together, but am glad they did get their HEA.

Wowsa I absolutely loved this book and the storyline flowed from the beginning until the end and all the characters were absolutely awesome. I am so very blessed to have been able to get an arc and I am absolutely blown away by this book.
Sophie must call the man shes loved since she was 16 and ask for help before someone gets to her and kills her. Gaige runs GHOST and was Sophie brother best friend until tragically he was killed in Afghanistan. Gaige has longed for his best friend sister and now needs his help. He knows he cant refuse to help her but can he keep her alive ?
This book had alot of twist and turns and suspense and romance and chemistry and steamy sex scenes and absolutely loved it. If I could give this book a 10 I would have because it's that good.

PJ Fiala is a new to me author, and I gotta say, I'm already in love with her exciting writing style that I found quite addictive. I mean, anytime an author starts a story out with an S.O.S call with some ninja moves afterwards, I already know that the story will keep me on the edge of my seat. And those ninja was the heroine which means she's a bad a** though she's the one on the run from danger. See, Sophie is in some serious trouble, after her is murdered, but it's put down to suicide. She doesn't believe the suicide part, so she's investigating it herself, but the lead she's found ends up dead, it lands her as the lead suspect, and this is where her brother's best friend, Gaige comes in. Sophie can't trust anyone, but she trusts Gaige to help her. However, there's some complications, like Gaige has always wanted Sophie, but that whole bro code thing, then things from the investigation aren't adding up, so he's becoming suspicious of Sophie, so that's not going to help his case of making her his. So how does he prove her innocence without ruining all that's he built in his career?! Yeah, it's quite the situation, and frankly, I did get a bit pissy at him for doubting her. He should have known that she wouldn't have called him after all that time if she were guilty, but I guess no one is perfect right? It definitely gave it some serious angst, making a push & pull to which had me wanting to pull my hair out. These two had some serious chemistry which was magnified throughout from all the chaos of her life, so you already know there were some sexy times coming off STEAMY! Now, let's talk about the suspense, it was thick, so the twists were around every corner which made me happy! In fact, you could find me in my happy place dropping some loud f-bombs at the shocking revelations as each layer was revealed. So, this new to me author has firmly landed herself on my list with this fantastic new series, and if you want to see how this all panned out, you already know what to do, one click this bad boy! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Oh my yes! PJ Fiala is a brand new author to me but I am a BIG fan. I was so into this from the first page. The suspense and danger kept my pulse pounding. And there was so many twists that I had no idea what was going to happen next.

I liked Sophie. A lot. She was such a strong woman both physically and emotionally but the events of the past few months left her feeling unlike herself; vulnerable. Not knowing what to do, she turned to the one man she knew would be able to help, Gaige. Talk about an alpha male! Protective and powerful. And pining for Sophie for more years than he cares to admit. He knew he had to help her when she called, but he had no idea the mess she was in.

With all the time Sophie and Gaige were spending in close quarters trying to get to the bottom the turn her life had taken they were able to talk a lot. Even with the mystery and danger escalating, they put their long harbored feelings out in the open. And both were beyond shocked and pleased that those feelings were reciprocated. These two had chemistry in spades! They were dynamite between the sheets.

It was a steady build. As some questions were answered, more popped up. And it was a tangled web of lies, secrets, deceit, and powerful men and one willful woman. I was absolutely glued to my kindle to see what Sophie, Gaige and his team would uncover next. Though, I found the way everything wrapped up a hair anticlimactic, I still didn't see most of the twists coming. Defending Sophie was a good start to what I'm hoping is an awesome new military suspense series.

Wow, what an awesome read with some major twists and turns! I am a huge fan of military reads and even more so for Second Chance romances-- and this has those in spades!

The story starts off fast, which I am totally behind, with Sophie on the run and panicked and not sure who she can call. She reaches out to someone who she has not seen/talked to in about 10 years- Gaige. A guy that used to be her brother's best friend before he died in Afghanistan. Not only did he used to be her brother's best friend, but she has a massive crush on him.

Gaige has not heard from Sophie in 10 years and when he answers and hears the panic in her voice, he puts all hands on deck. Gaige runs the GHOST squad which is like the military but way higher clearance and way more black ops. He flies down right away to help her out.

This "who 'dun it" read was engaging, angsty, real, and filled with all of the feels. The author did an AMAZING job of setting everything up and also in how she delivered it. After finishing the book, I keep remembering small little things that kept hinting to the outcome, but nothing until the end and your jaw freaking drops!

All in all, if you like suspense and murder and military men and women-- check this book out, I highly recommend it- 5 outta 5 stars!

PS: I received this book as an ARC but am voluntarily reviewing it!

Sophie Turner needs help and the only person she can call is a GHOST. Since the passing of her best friend Kate and the digging the two of them had been doing before Kate was allegedly murdered has Sophie turning to the ONLY person she know can and hopefully will help her .. Gaige Vickers .. if he remembers her.

Gaige is now the head of GHOST but when he gets a phone call from Sophie he drops everything to help her. Is it because of her brother Tate, his best friend, his partner or is it because of the feelings he has always had for Tate's little sister.

When he finds himself needing to go help her he knows he needs to bring back because he doesn't know what he is walking into. And boy does he and Hawk walk into to some stuff.

The ins and outs of the government operations that they have to deal with to now clear Sophie for murder fascinated me. I never knew things that were discussed in this chapter of GHOST existed. I t was an eye opener !! The anxiety of the highs and lows these characters go through makes your heart race !!

And we all know P.J. never leaves the sexy love out !! I with I could say more BUT I wont spoil it for you but leave you with .. I never saw that coming !! LOVED EVERY WORD !! Another smash hit for P.J. !!

Sophie needs help and fast. Her friend is dead already and she’s sure she’ll be next. Not knowing who else she can trust she calls her ex crush from back in the day. Gaige, leader of the special ops team GHOST, immediately flies out to help the woman he’s never been able to get off his mind and together they start to uncover some ugly dealings within the military. But will the villains get to them before they have the chance to expose the truth?

P.J Fiala definitely knows how to draw you into a story and keep you entertained throughout. The villain/s in this book definitely bring out all the angry feels and keep you reading just to find out how justice plays out. And the romance between the characters is slow but steady making their HEA that much more satisfying.

This is the fourth book I’ve read from this author and I have to say it’s my favorite one so far. I don’t know if it’s because this is a second chance romance so the characters were already pretty close once upon a time but I liked the relationship between them the most. Nothing felt rushed and there was enough time between them on page for me to believe in their HEA. I didn’t get that as much from the previous books I’ve read. But I’m excited to see how the rest of the series plays out.

I always enjoy a brother's best friend book. I love it even more when the hero and heroine have a past. These two definitely had a past. They both were in love with the other yet never said or did anything about it. Well faith has decided to step in, and unfortunately faith has thrown a twist into the whole scenario. Sophie is on the run and the only one who can help her is Gaige. I wasn't sure what I would think of this book but I honestly enjoyed it. At first I thought it would be full of a bunch of crazy back and forth between the two since there were so many chapters. But there was a huge criminal incident going on which Sophie was caught in the middle of and I liked that the author didn't just start it and finish it in a day. We actually got to see the whole thing play out. It made it seem more realistic. I loved these two as well. There was no beating around the bush. It had been over 20 years since they first met and they weren't gonna let this opportunity pass them by. I appreciated that. This was a great book, especially if you enjoy a bit more than romance in your stories. *I voluntarily read an advanced copy of this book for my honest and unbiased review.*

Sophie is accused of murder and on the run and so she has to turn to the one man she has always wanted but never been able to have - her brother's best friend Gaige. She had been investigating her best friend's suspicious death when her only source of information turns up dead. Gaige has longer for Sophie for years and he will do anything to keep her safe but not everything on the case is adding up and even though his heart tells him she is telling the truth, he will have to put his career on the line to push forward and sort this out. Can he help to clear her name, keep her alive and find out who the real killer is before she is the next victim?

I loved this story and the way that they were both tortured souls who desperately wanted each other but it was never the right time or place plus there was the best friend/brother scenario to complicate things. The plot was definitely something that was not quite clear to me until we were almost at the end of the story. It was addictive, and I was completely unable to put this book down. Easy to read and understand, it as a fun read. Contains mature content.

She needs him. He hadn't heard from her for too long, not since her brother died, but that didn't mean he didn't want her. He had hidden his feelings for over 20 years knowing that nothing could come of it but now she needed him. I haven't read much of this authors work but I do love how this series is starting out. These are standalone reads with carry over characters (my favorite kind of series). So far it's looking to be one with plenty of action and suspense. This one had such great twist going on that it wasn't until the end that it all came together and man what a finish. Rape, lies, threats from unexpected sources, nothing is what it seems as all of the truth comes out. This author doesn't reveal much as her characters race to stop a serial rapist with revenge and a heart of steel it wont be easy. Beautifully done with characters you will want to bring home to daddy. Sophie is no slouch and doesn't let them put her in a box to be rescued, she's all in and when it's all said and done she'll finally have everything she never thought was possible.

I received a complimentary copy of this book and I am voluntarily reviewing it.

This was a wonderful story. The action started immediately and kept up all the way through. The twists and turns that the plot takes really kept me guessing. Sophie calls Gaige Vickers of GHOST to come to her aid. She is in trouble. Her best friend was raped and then subsequently murdered but the death certificate listed the cause of death as a suicide. Sophie goes to the ME and says that she has proof that wasn't the case. The next thing she knows is that two thugs are after her. The adventure really heats up as Sophie has hidden feelings for Gaige and vice versa.

I was really enchanted with this story. I was kept guessing as to the suspect as nothing seemed to track and more questions were coming up than answers for some time. I adored having this book written in a dual POV format. Seeing inside these two characters' thought process was really enlightening.

If you love a suspenseful romance, then give this a try. You will not be sorry!!

This is the second book in the series that I read and was looking forward to it. I was not dissapointed, it had twists and turns and kept me guessing. All the characters click, the relationships are strong.

I loved Sophie and Gaige, long lost love and then to eventually meet all these years later was nice. I absoloutly loved Gigi, thought she was such a caring and giving person and had a great connection with sophie. I am looking forward to finding out more about the characters, especially Hawk.

The only downside is I felt that I was missing so much, after reading Defending Keirnan, I thought the book would develop from there but unfortunately there was characters missing. We do not know what happened to them, except for Auggie. (saying no more as do not want to spoil anything). Are they still with GHOST or have they moved on. Just felt that is was slightly disconnected.

Even with the slight downside, these have been good reads so far and looking forward to the rest of the series.

Friends since childhood, Sophie and Gaige were always attracted to each other but neither acted on their feelings. Fast-forward many years, Sophie finds herself in trouble and reaches out to the only person she can count on; Gaige. What starts out as her best friend being found dead by suicide quickly turns into Sophie being wanted for her murder because she looks into the real reason for her best friend’s death. Throughout the course of the book, Sophie and Gaige go through twists and turns that take them on a wild chase into finding who actually killed Sophie’s best friend and who framed Sophie for her murder. This book intrigued me and had me on the edge of my seat because it kept me guessing who the killer actually was! Overall, another good read and I’m glad that the author decided to branch into the GHOST team!

It's been a long time since I've read a suspense-filled romance packed full of action and adventure, and whoa! did I pick an absolute great one! Defending Sophie was a solid five-star read from start to finish!!

I'm new to P.J. Fiala's writing as well as Susan Stoker's characters, and I'm so happy I decided to give this story a try. From page one, I was glued to my kindle. Like, literally, I stayed up way later than I should because the suspense was killing me.

I loved that we got both Sophie and Gaige's POV throughout the story. I think being able to get both their perspectives made them genuine, true characters. The story itself was so nail-biting at times, but then those sparks between Sophie and Gaige. Gaige was tough and my kind of hero, but he knew how to gentle and sensitive to Sophie.

I can't say enough great things about this story. Grab it, read it, fall in love with it. You're in for one wild ride!!

You meet Sophie running for her life and off this novel goes. Tough, intelligent, trying to do the right thing by her murdered best friend - and she needs help. Calling Gaige. He was her brothers best friend. He arrives with a fellow GHOST operator and thinks keep on turning, escalating, twists. Some then involve Gaiges relatives, throwing another wrench in the works. In the midst of this suspenseful novel we have some steamy sex, and a twist that threw me and Gaige, Sophie and Hawk. Most of this book was shear enjoyment. For smart people Gaige and Sophie were both a little slow on the uptake. I like the information that was shared about how different branches (not just the service) work together. I will definitely be on the lookout for book 2 in this series.
Thank you Book Sprout, PJ Fiala for the opportunity to grab this arc! All thoughts and opinions are my own and were unsolicited.

Sophie is in the Army and on the run for her life, AWOL, and murder. Someone is trying to keep her quiet. Her best friend supposedly committed suicide after being raped. Sophie collects evidence but no one will listen. After someone tries to kidnap her she calls her dead brothers best friend. Gaige was best friends with Sophie’s brother. He has always thought Sophie was the most beautiful woman but because of “bro code” he never told her. Now out of the blue Sophie calls and says she’s in trouble. Gaige is owner of an elite company GHOST they do investigations, protection and dangerous missions. Gaige grabs one of the team and they fly to Sophie. Between trying to solve the problem and confessing their feelings it is a wild ride.
It is a great story. Some action. Sex. Two people who have loved each other forever finally get together. A little woman who is extremely helpful. Second chances. There was some editing errors and not a lot of action.
