2.5 stars. A very disappointing sequel by one of my favourite RH authors.
Before anyone says anything, my rating has NOTHING to do with the fact that there was a file mix-up on Amazon. Was it annoying? Yes. But this book made me deeply unhappy all on its own merit.
It turns out that I hate every single main character in Hidden River Secrets.
It genuinely got to the point where I was skipping pages to try and get to the end of the book more quickly, because I couldn't bear to read about Mia/Buck/Shawn for one more second. I EVEN SKIPPED THE SEX SCENES!!!!!! But let's take it one by one.
➽ MIA, THE HEROINE
❌ I know she's only sixteen, but I always feel I have the right to skewer these teenagers because I was sixteen only three years ago. So here it is: goddamn is she the naivest person I've EVER met. Running around putting on makeup before breakfast for her boyfriend, believing that everything will be okay as long as a pair of arsehole teenage boys claim to 'love' her... Ugh.
❌ Also, Mia is frankly a TERRIBLE person. She starts dating her best friend Shiv's ex-boyfriend, WHO CHEATED ON HER WITH MIA, literally ten seconds after they broke up and expects Shiv to be totally fine with it. What the actual hell? I wanted to slap her up the head so badly. She's also insanely cruel, trying to tell Shiv all the details about it, wanting her blessing for their relationship. Lord save me.
❌ Mia makes a huge production out of Shiv telling her to go kill herself. I mean, was it a great thing to say? No. But you know what, I think Shiv can get a pass on this occasion, considering she just discovered HER BOYFRIEND WAS CHEATING ON HER WITH HER BEST FRIEND. I found it incredible that everyone was acting like Mia was the injured party, even Shiv, who expresses a ton of guilt over her comment. It was like I'd entered an alternate reality. Mia's the one who should be expressing guilt! Mia's the one who should be begging for forgiveness!! Instead, I was subjected to PAGES of Mia debating whether it would make her a 'doormat' to forgive Shiv for a comment Shiv was (IMO) under the circumstances, entitled to say.
❌ Mia is the world's biggest doormat. Buck and Shawn treat her like crap, and she doesn't even really call them out on it until SOMEONE ELSE tells her, 'Hey, you know what? They're treating you like crap.' I know she had a difficult life and all, but some things are just too painful/cringey to read and put people off a book.
❌ A RH hinges on me, the reader, believing that the heroine is the sort of girl whom boys want to be with. I see absolutely no reason why anybody would have a crush on Mia or why they constantly tell her she's too good for them. They all deserve each other, frankly.
➽ BUCK, 'HERO' #1
❌ Mia is getting bullied all day, every day, in school. He ignores that it's happening because he's scared of getting trouble with the teachers. Um, what? Detention is more scary than your supposed girlfriend literally getting physically assaulted? Instead, he just meets her every day for some secret snogging in his car, before letting her get beaten up at school without intervening.
❌ More evidence he's a real prick: he tells Mia that he knows all the girls hate her because they all want to f*ck him and Shawn, so they're jealous of her.
❌ Basically, he had zero personality in this book. Without a single question or demur he suggests that he, Mia and Shawn enter a poly relationship, and they don't even discuss it properly. It felt extraordinary out of character. They all just jumped into this relationship out of nowhere 'because two eyes on Mia's back are better than one.' Not that it stops her from getting beaten up still.
➽ SHAWN, 'HERO' #2
❌ He cheats on Shiv, the supposed love of his life, with Mia.
❌
❌ He jumps straight from relationship to relationship like the little jerk he is, and this is never questioned or held up to be the CLEAR EVIDENCE OF A PERSONALITY FLAW which it obviously is. You know what? This might be a conservative opinion, but I can't really bring myself to trust people who cheat on their significant others (this is 30% of my problem with Boris Johnson, the other 70% is his racism, lying, stupidity, and hypocrisy). Which means I don't trust Shawn either. I can't see him as a hero at all, and I don't feel interested in reading a book where he's one.
TL;DR: These characters make me want to do physical violence to them, and the only thing I want now is to see Shiv get a harem of her own (starting with Shawn's twin Garret). The sequel will (apparently) come out in two weeks, so I might read that, but if these characters don't change I'm out. The book only got bumped up to 3 stars because we see a scene with Darcy from the author's other series, which I love (but is also experiencing Amazon issues we haven't been updated on).

Not impressed
I understand there has been a glitch with this book but what has really got to me is that the author has not kept everyone up to date with what’s going on and also I’ve seen that same book is up for preorder for the 31st August so we’re going to have to pay again to read it not impressed at all

Ok so I did read this book, but I’m not going to mark it as read or review it at this time because there was a problem when amazon published the book, and the updated file the author sent wasn’t the one that was sent out. Due to this error people who purchased the book like myself only received part of the book.
I don’t think it would be fair to rate this poorly due to circumstances that are out of the author’s control, so I’m just going to wait until the issue is fixed, but I do have to say that what I read was pretty good:)

Ok so bare with me on this because I feel like I have a lot of venting to get out and Amazon doesn't encourage bad words in their reviews! Holy crap what did I just read? WTF just happened? I'm in a state of shock from that ending and need the next book asap. And I do mean that as in I need it yesterday! After reading that first book I wasn't sure if it was going to end up being a RH or not and to be honest I'm still confused as all get out with what's going on. The first book was good but also a bit confusing. And still after reading this, if this series is a RH it's an extremely slow burn. I was kinda iffy the first part of this book and wasn't sure where my head was. There are a few errors in this but let's be honest, it happens. No one is perfect so I just overlooked them. I wasn't going to go with the 5 stars either but then that ending sealed the deal for me. My mind is truly f*ck*d after reading this. I actually think I'm in literal shock and to know I have to wait 2 weeks for the next book to come out might actually just kill me. I want, no need to see the outcome of this. Holy crap! I feel quite betrayed even if I did have a hint of what was coming. Mia better bring a world of pain to book 3. It isn't even what happened. It was that she was kept in the dark that makes me want to strangle a couple people! Ugh....

Don't waste your money.
First let me start off by saying I am really one of those people who never write a review. Now for the review portion, this book has potential to be decent, however it's not. Maybe when finished, but I honestly don't know if I will give it a chance then. I mean I pre-ordered this one as soon as I finished the first one; thinking I would get more than 40 pages and a finished book. That wasn't the case; what a waste of the time to read it and money for a book that doesn't even end.

Well its finally here
I waited and waited for this book. I wasn't disappointed. I almost gave this book 4 stars. My reasoning is simple...the book seemed to drag some. Mia sorting out her feelings for Buck and Shawn and whether she was going to date both took so long. The only golden point to reading her indecisive-ness was her hanging out with Colt. I'll admit that I love Colt and I find every single one of the girls at the school boring and I dont trust them a lick. Her interactions with Shiv and Paige seemed repetitive and boring because it never led anywhere. I cant figure out the rest of guys..Cael and Reid especially. I'm not sure whose side they are really on which is a good thing for the book.
One of the major things that made me want to make this 4 stars is the similarities between the lines in the author's other series and this one. Sometimes it's almost like the romantic sides to some of the characters are re-skinned. Bucky comes across like Finn a lot. Shawn sometimes sounds a lot like Charlie. I know this happens in books but for a couple of chapters in the middle of the book it was coming on strong and it kind of turned me off to the book.
But what made this book worth it was the camping trip. The last 25% of the book was so perfect. I loved loved loved that twist. And while I knew Colt had a thing for her..I was shocked and almost giddy about the rest. Good job author!

Great read
This was a fantastic addition to the series. It really is an emotional roller coaster ride and that cliffhanger was something else. It amazes me that there were so many low ratings due to technical difficulties. Ratings are should be on the story itself. Furthermore you should have been smart enough to know that the book would be fixed eventually but instead you chose to taint this author's reviews which sometimes makes or breaks how it sells. Do you consider yourselves to be a bully because that's what you have done.

So I am finally able to read this...I have been quietly and patiently waiting for the correct version to be released and it was WORTH. THE. WAIT!!
So I don’t like spoilers so I won’t do that here....Let me just say there is en ending to this that you don’t expect. Almost all books that we read these days have predictable endings because HEA’s are what we look for but this had an amazing twist.
I am so ready for book 3! I am no even sure what relationship I am rooting for right now. Gahhh!

AMAZING!!!
This book was more than worth the wait! That ending had me crying! I have never been the type of person to beg to have the next book because writing a great book takes time and I'm willing to wait. This is the first book that I am begging to get the next book ASAP. I have had my heart ripped out and I want to know what will happen next.

Whiney FMC and gross MMCs
I read this when I first released and the wrong file was sent out. I honestly wasn't very impressed with the bit I read but I decided to give it another go. I'm still not impressed.
Mia is the biggest whiney brat I have had the displeasure of reading. Seriously, grow up girl. I don't care that she's a teenager. That is not acceptable behavior for anyone of any age. The guys are gross. Like, I need a shower after reading about, them gross. One sleeps with his girlfriend then dumps her for Mia, all in less than a week. And Mia is just okay with it because 'he's confused." He lies and gets the whole school turned against her and, again, she makes excuses for him. And then we find out that he never wanted Mia in the first place?! Gross. So freaking gross.
I do plan on reading the next one, but that has more to do with my obsession with finishing series than it does with the book itself. I don't really recommend this though.

So after some Drama the full Version of this book is release and thank you Kit, for apologising for the long time it took you to find the problem and solve it.
The second part of the Hidden River Series was not as good as the first one.
So finally the rh is starting but the bullying and other stuff was just like book 1.

Absolutely loved this book I literally couldn’t see where it was going. I knew Shawn would be an issue but wowza. Buck doing what he’s done. Can’t wait to see what happens with the next book

This book is freaking crazy. I usually don't read super small books but I did and alot happened in this book. First, after everything that happened she was told to go kill herself because of a lie.Heres my thing! If she was a true friend she would have gotten her side of the story versus the boy who dumped her. Ontop of that you have no class when you tell someone to kill them selves.
I'm so mad and hurt by this book through and through!
This book has me confused and it's no wonder Mia is all over this place with her feelings and her guys. I think Shawn is a piece of crap. He needs to get a handle on himself and the way he feels and stop using girls to get over his own desires. Buck, I think is excited to share with his best friend. I don't think he realizes where the feelings actually go. I think what Mia walks in on is actually a mistake that once again asshole Shawn screws every thing up. Instead of Mia storming in there to find out what's really going on she runs which drives me crazy. And then She makes her own real fucking mistake.

...this book!
I'm not even sure how I feel right now. I love the story and I can wait to read the next book, but...there's always a but (lol), I honestly did not like ANY of the main characters by the end except for Colt! Shawn was so selfish and honestly very self-centered. Buck was pretty much the same, only concerned about himself and how he was feeling. What kinda love is that? They both stood back and let everyone bully Mia. Shiv, damn who needs enemies when you have friends that tell you to go kill yourself!... not that Mia was being a very good friend. Mia, geez Mia. Come on girl! Stand up for yourself already! That was the best scene when she finally stood up to Paige. So again I say, very well written, worth the wait and excited for book 3 but I really, really hope there is more growth with the characters. Growth where they're actually acting like they want to be together and not so selfishly.
I'm not even sure how I feel right now. I love the story and I can wait to read the next book, but...there's always a but (lol), I honestly did not like ANY of the main characters by the end except for Colt! Shawn was so selfish and honestly very self-centered. Buck was pretty much the same, only concerned about himself and how he was feeling. What kinda love is that? They both stood back and let everyone bully Mia. Shiv, damn who needs enemies when you have friends that tell you to go kill yourself!... not that Mia was being a very good friend. Mia, geez Mia. So worth it
I've been waiting for this update and it was amazing! At first I was getting so angry on Mia's behalf.... Why is Buck ghosting her? Why did her Uncle do a complete 180 and go super strict? Why did Shawn lie? Finally... Finally she starts to get angry and demand some respect for herself. Some things happen fast... One minute she is against it and the next she is ok... I think we will eventually be ok with what happened at the end. They just need to open with her for once. Colt is right in that aspect. Shiv also needs to come clean. Third book should have gone surprises for us! Can't wait to see how it unfolds. Love the phoenixcry crossover as well!

Enjoyable read
I enjoyed this story i have seen that its not really peoples thing but i actually like this. Would have liked to see more buck but oh well lol i really feel for mia and what she endures during this. Id like to see more growth from her in the next book or books depending how long this series is. Im glad i waited to read this after how the first book ended cause damn that cliffy killed me. So now im off to read the next one! Definitely reccomend this book to others!

Amazing book
So yeah there was a wee f**k up to start with but book was worth the wait was not what i expected some great turns hoping to see the MFC really start fighting back she’s started with a few characters but I hope that’s the end of her easy forgiveness to others she deserves better can’t wait to see where book three will take us I have no idea which direction the authors going and it’s thrilling

Okay, so I need more like right now. I'm going to be very needy with this series because, let me tell you, it's so amazing. I swear right when you think you know what's going to happen, nope Mia gets hit with major things that make her question her feelings. My goodness, I can't get over how much I love this series. I really want to go on about it, but I don't want to ruin it.

Omg yes that’s what I’ve been waiting for ! The twists ! I literally almost had an anxiety attack !! I’m so disappointed in the boys and I hope Mia doesn’t forgive them ! And gives them hell ! I’m team #Colt this was so so good I don’t even care now I had to wait for the fixes it was worth it and I’m so happy the next book isn’t far off idk if I could handle it with that Cliffy

Can’t wait for book three!
Colt is my favourite! This basically sums up my thoughts on this book haha. Buck & Shawn didn’t make a huge impact on me in this book. Their relationship didn’t really surprise me but all the secrecy & letting Mia take all the crap did surprise me. It made me not such huge fans of them but Colt he was real & funny & looked out for Mia when no one else did. Can’t wait to see where book three takes us.

Unfinished
So many mistakes!!!! I love this series, but damn this was really rushed and that ending........like did you finish the sentence or were you trying to go for a weird cliffhanger. I can’t mark this book down because that would be unfair. But so frustrating this book. Hopefully the third is better.

When this book comes out the way it was meant too, I know that it'll be absolutely amazing. Currently, we have a whole bunch of people that left bad reviews causing amazon to pull the book instead of them fixing the issue and sending the correct file out. (Amazon sent out the wrong file and the author was trying to get them to fix it and is still trying)

Worth the wait
Their were issues with this book on release, with Amazon loading the wrong file therefore it getting lots of bad reviews. However the full book is finally here and girl that ending, I need more. Mia is so mature for her age, takes thing as they come. Excited to see what happens next with the boys. Good book.

Brilliant and beautiful
I just couldn’t love Mia more and her story is amazing. She is so strong in the face of adversity that everyone just compliments her. Kit is a phenomenal writer and the Hidden River Academy series is amazing. This cliffhanger was unexpected and beautiful at the same time. I can’t wait to get book 3 and see how things play out.
