Since 1975, Dr. Marjorie Bard has listed to the homeless--especially homeless women. They have told her their stories despite threats of retaliation and begged her to bring their problems and the social injustice that underlies these problems to the attention to all those who would listen, and those who deny any problem exists. Out of these encounters, as well as Dr. Bard's own experience with homelessness, emerges Shadow Women .
This book is about Homeless Women. How they survive on the streets, why they are on the streets, what happened to them that they are homeless. Some very sad stories. Stories about how they find places to eat and sleep. Some sleep in empty hospital rooms or cleaning closets, others sleep in cars, some sleep in empty cabins for the winter while people are gone. How they make things to sell out of recycled items. They find food at church get togethers or a wedding where they know no one. Where do they clean up. It is fascinating how they survive. It gave me a new insight into homelessness and how sad I am for these ladies. I am grateful for what I have.
