Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo, the celebrated creative team behind New 52 Batman, reunite for another Batman story for DC Black Label: the pun-tacular Last Knight on Earth. And, though this first issue isn’t as boring as their later Batman books were, it is a mess of half-baked ideas that make little sense.

Some people have described this storyline as the Batman version of Old Man Logan, which I can see in some parts, and it does seem to be an Elseworlds-type story, but it’s unfortunately nowhere near as good as Mark Millar and Steve McNiven’s book.

The first part is Bruce Wayne waking up in Arkham and being told that he’s a mental patient and has been living a delusion for the last twenty years - Batman, his rogues gallery, everything is all in his head. Ok - but it’s not. It won’t turn out to be that for obvious reasons and Snyder doesn’t even bother to keep up that charade for very long either, so it’s a waste of time basically. And it has nothing to do with the second half of the issue - even more pointless! But time does seem to have passed even though Bruce hasn’t aged somehow.

The second half is where the Old Man Logan comparison comes in. The world has somehow been destroyed by Brainiac and a mysterious villain called Omega. Green Lantern rings, by themselves and for no reason, are imprisoning any human wearers it can and giant green babies are terrorising the hellscape. What few superheroes that are left - all women, strangely - have been forced to survive in Gemworld. Oh yeah and the Joker is a living head in a jar that Batman just happens to conveniently stumble across in a desert somewhere.

Wonder Woman’s explanation for how the world ended is completely unconvincing ass and I just feel like the heroes are only in the position they’re in now because the plot needs them to be. Joker in a jar doesn’t make sense, particularly why Batman would feel the need to lug him around everywhere - just leave him in the desert and move on!

Even though the ideas don’t gel together they made for an unpredictable narrative that wasn’t totally unentertaining to read, albeit in the same way you can’t stop watching a car crash happen. And it was good to see Greg Capullo drawing Batman again. That said, I think whatever magic Scott Snyder was once able to harness for his better Batman books is still missing if this first issue is anything to go by - Last Knight on Earth is a heap of poorly developed “wouldn’t it be cool if…?” ideas jumbled on the page.

A great start, good art work and story. Batman has been working a case for close to a year, then wakes up to a completely new world. There are no heroes or villains just survivors including the living head of the Joker in a jar. What happened? Who did it? Does is matter as there does not seem to be anything or anyone worth saving?

Young Man Batman! So I haven't really been a fan of Snyder's recent stuff, but this one was actually quite good. So the story has Bruce Wayne wake up younger and in Arkham Asylum, and everyone tells him he murdered his parents and he never became Batman (Reminded me of Glass). We soon get past that as we see the planet in ruin, most of the heroes dead and now Batman must stop a new villain called Omega.

To start off Greg Capullo's art is fantastic as always (did I expect anything else?), he and Snyder are a dream team! The story as well was very interesting, I definitely want to see where this all goes. The book also gave me an Old Man Logan vibe, which I think is pretty cool! Overall, I can definitely recommend this one!

Yep. 3 stars. It was fine with some really nice art. But nothing really stood out to me that much. I’m interested to see where it goes and plays out, I just don’t think it lives up to the hype or creators behind it

There have been a lot of hype about this new series coming out and so far, yeah it's still just one issue so we will stay calm, it's a very good start. Strange universe/concept, a bit darker then most, good artworks, not so sure I like Bruce style, the hair cuts and all but... I'm curious to see how it will evolve but I'm definitely in!!

Interesting so far, and I like that this duo is collaborating again, but not sure if it’ll be as good as the Court of Owls was.

Alright so I’ve been looking forward to this since I heard the basic longline that Batman carries Jokers head in a jar through the desert.

Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Batman was one of the first things I pulled in my monthlies when I first started with single issues. And this is being toted as the end and last story of those two doing Batman. And he’ll have they done Batman. Iconic stories, visceral images, quirky, weird, fun, they’re run on Batman is so good and sits proudly among my favorites on my Bat shelf. When they get together and when apart fine work is produced.

If you were to ask me my favorite artist working in comics it’d be Greg Capullo. If you were to ask me of the writers that have an instant read from me it’d be a list but on that list would be Scott Snyder because I can feel his love for comics, for storytelling in general. And in raw emotional impact this oversized DC Black Label edition has five stars because I loved every page of it. I smiled, I became sad, I laughed. It had me bouncing from one end to the other. It’s got payoff from their run and chops for itself because it’s a monster of plot, characterization, payoffs, and really it feels like the end to something. Part of that comes from the feeling of stakes. Batman feels alone here, like it’s him and this head in a jar out to save the world from something he may have helped to create.

I won’t dive into the plot because you should experience this as it comes if my two cents if worth anything at all. What I will tell you though is that this feels in continuity with the rest of the Snyder and Capullo run from court of Owls to a super heavy at least. Familiar images and ideas played off of. Though you should read Metal because it’s a blast of an event and All Star Batman because did nothing else it was interesting to read issue to issue. Basically I’m saying to get everything out of this I think you should read the work they’ve done on Batman before. Because it feels like a continuation and an end because it’s a nightmare Batman never dreamed of.

Lastly know that everyone working on this book is firing on all cylinders. Snyder is have a super plot heavy wacky narrative acid trip day at the office and I love it. Capullo is crafting images that tell the story themselves, all while being some of loveliest stuff you ever seen. Johnathan Glapion is inking it so well you hardly think of it as a comic isn’t flows so damn well. And FCO Plascenia uses the color at every opportunity. The colors covey the emotion the desert is orange and yellow, underground is purple. Oh god I love this, it’s one of the best things I’ve picked up off the rack for a long while.

5 stars. Fucking love it. I’m here for the whole ride.

The idea is interesting - though I think we need to talk about how much like a villain Batman is. Really, need to talk about it. The reason also was rather timely considering the "protests" by certain people who believe capitalism is more important than life. I love the use of the underground in this book.

The Future Belongs to the Mad
Aight the ACTUAL end of Snyder’s and Capullo’s Batman run. This has been one of the more well known duos on Batman especially in these past few years. Their names will go down in the future as a classic duo like Loeb and Sale or Miller and Mazzucchelli. BUT either way I was super hyped for this book. Especially when I heard it wasn’t just a regular single issue. It kinda reminds me of when Miller put out 4 bigger sized issues for DKR back in 86. After reading and reviewing this book for a few hours I can safely say I am definitely intrigued. Cuz if there ever was a story that ever left you with 10 thousand questions well here’s a perfect example. The book really does a great job of making you feel like Bruce Wayne. Confused, scared, angry, and clueless. Parts 1&2 of this story are spectacular. Loved the shit out of it. It kinda went down the same route Jeff Lemire took Moon Knight back in 2016. (Which is a fantastic story by the way) Once part 3 hits the book became a little less enjoyable for me for a few reasons.

*Spoiler* 1: Since we skip into the far flung future, Snyder sets up what the messed up future would look and feel like. I kinda knew this would happen, but unfortunately this seems very rushed. I really wish this was more than 3 Books because more could have been established and shown about this apocalyptic future. If anybody has ever read my Old Man Logan review, you know I fucking LOVE when creators make their own crazy and amazing versions of the apocalyptic future. I just find it so damn interesting because so many details and references can be made here. I haven’t read the next 2 books of course but my hunch is that more attention to this won’t be given. Or maybe I’ll totally be eating my own words I dunno. The second problem I have with the second half of the book is the overabundance of EXPOSITION. There is a lot of it here and most of it could have been shown in a flashback instead of in walls of text while 2 characters walk around. Exposition is necessary but you have to do it right, and I know this isn’t the way because I wasn’t engaged, or as engaged as I could have been. The Black Label was something I don’t actually thinking was needed here. They say the word “shit” twice. Even in the New 52 Run there was someone who got stabbed through the eye by Mr. Bloom. And you could see brain, blood, and cartilage. It might get a lot worse but this wasn’t anything that warranted a mature label.

Alright Capullo. You have always been one of my favourite Batman artists but this book cements that. The penciling he does here is just………………...Its just too good man. That combined with the colouring and we have some of the best Batman panels I have ever seen. In particular one where he is standing in the rain and another in a super badass straight jacket Batsuit. Damn that was frickin tight.

By the way I have no idea where this takes place in continuity. I’d like to believe it’s an elseworlds story, but I’m willing to bet 100 bucks it’s not. With all the fallout after Metal and the current Snyder run on Justice League I have no clue.

In the end, I’m in. I really had a great time reading this and it takes Snyder’s and Capullo’s Batman arc to new and batshit crazy lengths. I have a thousand questions that hopefully are gonna be answered soon, a large portion of the book seems to be breezed by, and exposition makes a big crater here but with all that I’m still gonna give a higher grade because overall I got really excited seeing all this unfold. And the art is something to die for.

What an awesome start to this series. Much better than Batman Damned. Unlike some recent DC series, such as Heroes in Crisis and Doomsday Clock, this has an actual plot. Not that it’s without its weirdness - the weirdness works here because what surrounds it makes sense. And dark as the overall story is, it has several moments of laugh out loud humor. Capullo’s art adds a touch of lightness, and some of the imagery (as seen on the cover) is badass. Looking forward to seeing how this plays out.

Okay, there’s a lot to unpack here. First off, Batman walking around with the Joker’s head is very reminiscent of Deadpool walking around with Zombie Deadpool’s head in Merc With A Mouth. Secondly, although not completely fleshed out, the landscape feels very Old Man Logan to me. Thirdly, the way that Bruce woke up and was thrown into a dystopian present is very Rick Grimes/28 Days Later of DC. Finally(although there is so much more), Diana looks god awful with a mohawk! My initial assessment of this title is that so far it’s good, but the whole thing has a “been there, done that” feel to it.

Snyder in his latest Batman entry, to me with Snyder it depends on the day, sometimes I’m surprised by his story telling and other times I find him a little ordinary. Here in The Last Knight on earth he’s all over the place. I found the beginning interesting mostly with Alfred encountering Wayne in Arkham as essentially confused as to what’s going on after the surprise of the first few pages. Then begins a sort of surrealistic phase involving the Joker and then another part with a fanciful description of ‘what happened’, still having 3 stories in one is asking for a lot, and it will be interesting to see how Snyder ties it all together. One thing is certain the book has amazing art by Capullo, that is just a pleasure to see anyway...

Fact is I liked that there wasn’t too too much dialogue, there always seems to be too much talk, not enough action. So I’m hopeful that Snyder is able to continue without the blather. Looking forward to seeing how this all comes together ... or doesn’t.

A new standalone series in Batman? Yes please!
This series is based on a premise that has already been covered in Batman (but I can't say which one, because I don't want to spoil the revelation).
It was a pretty interesting start, all things considered. What I love about this is that I honestly don't know where they're going to go with the plot, or how far they'll push it.

Booooooyyyyyy! This new mini-series kicks off with the coldest idea? What if Batman wasn't ever really Batman? What if he has been in Arkham Asylum this whole time? Snyder starts this issue off with a bang.

But when we find out that this isn't in fact what's really going on, things start to slide a bit. We will have to see where Snyder takes us. I have faith though. And you already know Capullo never misses.

Yo esperaba que Last Knight on Earth fuera peor.

‘Goodness is the oldest lie there is. Be good and stay in the pretty garden. Eat the apple, learn the truth and well..., But I say eat all the apple you want’.... this dialogue by lex luthor is the centre piece of the story. (Yes, lex luthor in a Batman story, should be easy enough to guess Superman is gone or worse, doomsday).
Batman has done this many times before. He is struck when investigating a case no one lodged, wakes up to find himself in a place he never thought he will end up (or wait, was there always a feeling he might be an interloper!’) .. He starts fighting as if it is all s dream, but comes out and finds it’s worse (a nightmare..). Super heroes gone and too bad, villains are also gone... Batman, whose ally was always darkness, appalled to see Humanity embracing darkness for safety; led by the new heroes on the promise of a old god. Batman and a voice that is not his, team up for possibly a one last Adventure, which he has not done ever before. ( again, is the voice in his head or in his hand - Snyder writes, Capullo weaves )
