A Scrum Book: The Spirit of the Game

Rate this book
Gain insights and depth of rationale into Scrum from many highly respected world authorities, including one of its founders, who lead you through the deep foundations of Scrum's structure and practice. Enhance and customize your Scrum practice with ninety-four organizational building blocks, called patterns, that you can freely and flexibly choose from to fit your needs. Understand and appreciate the history of Scrum and the role it plays in solving common problems in product development.

Building a successful product usually involves teams of people, and many choose the Scrum approach to aid in creating products that deliver the highest possible value. Implementing Scrum gives teams a collection of powerful ideas they can assemble to fit their needs and meet their goals. The ninety-four patterns contained within are elaborated nuggets of insight into Scrum's building blocks, how they work, and how to use them. They offer novices a roadmap for starting from scratch, yet they help intermediate practitioners fine-tune or fortify their Scrum implementations. Experienced practitioners can use the patterns and supporting explanations to get a better understanding of how the parts of Scrum complement each other to solve common problems in product development.

The patterns are written in the well-known Alexandrian form, whose roots in architecture and design have enjoyed broad application in the software world. The form organizes each pattern so you can navigate directly to organizational design tradeoffs or jump to the solution or rationale that makes the solution work. The patterns flow together naturally through the context sections at their beginning and end.

Learn everything you need to know to master and implement Scrum one step at a time - the agile way.

This was a weird book. In the intro, they talked about how it was written by a committee of people and it showed to me.

I found it a bit maddening at times that the explanation of the scrum process was not linear-- it would reference things discussed much further in the text. In addition, a lot of the illustrations/diagrams had no captions which made it hard for me to fully understand what it was helping me understand.

If you are new to scrum, read another book first. If you understand scum, do not read this book front to back, instead, read the intro and first chapter, then the first appendix, and go from there.

There are a lot of good ideas in this book, but the layout of the content made it hard for me to grasp these ideas.

Everyone who has ever been part of an organization doing Scrum incorrectly has complained about how terrible Scrum is and how unreliable it is.

This book breaks down the concepts of a Scrum team into easily digestible patterns. Encouraging readers to apply a single pattern at a time and to start with The Spirit of the Game the book walks through multiple pattern languages that might be a good fit for your organization depending on how they are planning to apply Scrum.

Not only is the book incredibly easily to digest and understand the core applications of Scrum, but it has easily become my most referenced book in my work as a Software Engineer. If you are new to Scrum this is an easy to follow guide on how you could implement Scrum at an organization. If you are a practiced Scrum participant then you will likely find a few patterns in here that could take your team to the next level. This has changed the way that I think about apply Scrum principles and I can't wait to write a pattern language of my own.

Scrum as a software process is part of a larger ecosystem, which includes the people. The best practices have evolved over time. Because of this Patterns are an ideal format for capturing how to practice Scrum well. While an understanding of patterns might be useful, it’s not at all necessary to get the full value from this book.

A Scrum Book is a definitive collection of patterns about Scrum. You’ll learn how to improve you Scrum process, and along the way, perhaps be inspired to help you team work better. If you are new to Scrum, this book will point you at the right practices. If you are an experienced Scrum practitioner, this book will help you get out of any ruts you may have been in.

While this book is an approachable introduction to Scrum, those new to the framework might get more value out of the book if you started with a briefer intro to the concepts and values like the Scrum guide.

Even if you are not familiar with Patterns, or Scrum a Scrum book will help you learn and think critically about how you apply, or could apply, Scrum. I've been working with Scrum for a while and found that reading the book inspired me to work with my team to be better.

I have a printed copy of this book since April 2018 (draft) and it is already worn!
It's extremely informative and has something to offer for any Scrum pracitioner, beginning or experienced.
The individual patterns are pragmatic and describe potential solutions in a specic context, and more importantly, the rationale behind it.
It's so important to know WHY we do the things we do, so we can adjust it to our context if required.
The pattern languages offer a lot of power in a systems thinking view and inspire/guide your adoption.
This book also contains a lot of inspiration to get back to the fundamentals of Scrum, the way it was intended.

Very good book. All aspects of scrum + everything in the ‘peripherique’. Cross references in the eBook makes it easy to navigate through all the topics. Some novice, but also more advanced topics. The book brings exactly what the title describes: ‘the spirit’ behind scrum.
