The witches of Coventry are all on edge when the crew of a famous ghost hunting show arrives in town. Coventry has been good at hiding its secrets from the world for hundreds of years, but in the deep dark corners of the web, whispers of a town full of witches and ghosts circulate among those who are true believers of the paranormal.
When it’s decided that denying them a filming permit would just make them more suspicious, Brighton is elected by the town council to be their official Coventry escort. Her job is to ensure they don’t catch any convincing evidence of the paranormal and hopefully make them so bored they decide to cut the town from their show’s schedule.
But, this is Coventry we’re talking about. When one of the film crew turns up dead at Hangman’s House after a night of paranormal investigation, Brighton is once again forced to get involved.
Oh, and Thorn’s in trouble too. He's in hot water in more ways than one. He'll need Brighton's help to save his bacon from the frying pan, but will he really break her heart?
A Clean Sweep is the fourth book in the Wicked Witches of Coventry cozy mystery series.
Sara Bourgeois is a Midwesterner through and through. She spends her time writing, reading, herding cats, and standing in her driveway during tornado warnings. (You can't see them from the basement.)
I love books, but I tend to fall into ruts where I'm reading the same genre or two for months. And then I get to the day where I need something different. I usually go looking for a new-to-me author to jump into a series that bumps me out of my genre rut. That's how I found Sara Bourgeois' books....I wanted to try something different. And I'm so glad I did. This series is just FUN to read! I like the characters. The plots are interesting and entertaining. And, I like the mix of mystery, paranormal and humor. Plus, the audio books are short enough that I've been able to binge listen up to book four in a week. There are new books coming out -- and I want to start reading on release day! Then I don't fall victim to spoilers like I did with the earlier books in this series. (An author, of all people should know better than to post a huge plot spoiler in a review! I accidentally read it while posting my review for a book I had just finished. So annoying!)
A Clean Sweep is Book 4 in the Wicked Witches of Coventry series. Ghost hunters are in town to investigate. Brighton, Remy and the gang are called upon by the city to escort the ghost hunters around town (and to make sure they don't catch any video footage or EVPs that give away Coventry's hidden secrets). But (of course) things go wrong. Very wrong. Murderously wrong.....
I listened to the audio book version of this story. At 3.5 hours, the audio is a nice, quick listening length. I enjoyed listening on my commutes, while doing household chores after work, etc. Rebecca Mitchell does a great job of narrating. She has a pleasant voice and reads at a perfect pace. Not too slow....and not too fast. She rings the characters to life....even the snarky kitty cat familiar. :)
Fun series! Moving on to Book 5....Panic Broom. This is the last of the series that I could find on audio, so will have to move through the rest of the series at a slower pace. I can only read print/ebooks in the evening or on weekends, but I'm definitely going to keep reading! And there is a spin-off series, Familiar Kitten Mysteries, that I'm really looking forward to reading!
nice brain candy series- purely for entertainment. So many times Brighton acts like the “too stupid to live” character in a horror movie. In this one, she is told to wait for back up, but hears a noise in the basement and decides to go down there and check it out! That’s a cliche for sure! And ladies and gentlemen, this isn’t even an ordinary basement in an ordinary house, it’s an old haunted and magical house filled with secrets and a basement that regularly summons demons. It’s not a spoiler to tell you that her solo trip to the basement was not a good decision. But it’s a brain candy book, so it works out in the end -also not a spoiler :) My main criticism for these stories is how often I’m totally surprised by Brighton’s actions. It’s fun when a protagonist surprises the reader or is impetuous, but Brighton often acts without motivation. More than once in every book she’ll all of a sudden be doing something new/different without explanation or internal narrative. It seems arbitrary, OR like the author created a detailed outline for the plot that they stuck to, without explaining how event A leads to event B or action C. I can’t find a logical progression for a lot of the plots. - That’s also how the romantic entanglements seem throughout the series so far as well. All of a sudden she’s in serious like and then all of a sudden in love and then all of a sudden she’s breaking up; there aren’t enough precipitating details to make any of it feel real/solid. I don’t find myself having an opinion either way in regards to Brighton’s love life, and it’s because we don’t get an opportunity to become attached.
I’m listening to them on audiobook, and I WILL continue with the series. We all need a little brain candy from time to time. My favorite character is the cat.
She made some really poor choices in this book. Like why… I just people being really stupid just annoy me. It’s probably why I stopped reading this series.
Brighton has inherited Hangman’s House from her great-aunt. A great-aunt she had no idea was a witch. And now Brighton has discovered she is one, too. It’s all new to her. Being a new witch in a town thick with witches who’ve known they were witches their whole life is weird. And stressful. But not as stressful as having to babysit a ghost hunting crew from some internet show. The city Council has deemed that Brighton is the best candidate to keep them from discovering all of the supernatural stuff that happens in Coventry because she’s new to town and, well, she doesn’t have a job. Unfortunately, one of the crew is hanged right outside Hangman’s House and now the rest of the crew is convinced there’s freaky shit going down in town.
Brighton needs to find out right quick and in a hurry who actually killed the crewman because she knows it wasn’t supernaturally done and he sure as shit didn’t hang himself. With the help of her boyfriend Thorn, who also happens to be the Sheriff, Brighton and her friends get to work solving the dastardly murder. Well, I’d think most murders are dastardly so that’s a bit dramatic even for me.
Anyway, this is a decent cozy murder mystery with a side order of romance and serious angst thrown in for good measure. The characters are interesting even if the murder is kinda…not. I’m enjoying this series so far and this is a decent addition to it.
Tried to give a try. I wanted to binge read the series. The first few books were ok they weren’t extravagant reads or anything. Fun yes no thought process though. The main character Started to really drive me crazy, frustrate and annoy. She is NOT a cop but keeps trying to solve mysteries. Her boyfriend is continually put in a bad spot because she wants to insert herself in investigations. Seems like they only communicate when she wants to be a detective. There is no chemistry between them. He Seems really stiff. I’ve read several series with the same formula but the characters mesh and have chemistry these didn’t. Seemed too forced. I won’t be reading any more in the series. I tried to give it a go but I’m done.
I liked this series as soon as I picked it up, but the pairing I was hoping for finally came together in this book and I couldn’t have been happier about it. No spoilers, but the author managed to trim out a deadwood character that irritated me from the start too, so I am really pleased with this installment. Way to get rid of that thorn in my side. Can’t wait for the next book.
I listened to this on audiobook. This is an amusing series and easy to listen to when I’m doing rote tedious work. This book didn’t dig deep. Lots of potential but felt more like a 3rd draft. I continue to dislike the law enforcement lobe interest- he’s such a wuss.I’d tell My daughter to dump him fast.anyway, this book has potential but was undeveloped.
Why, in this day and age of technology, can’t a book be written without mistakes???? To me, this is just plain lazy. Proofread your books before they are published. PLEASE!!
Nothing like waking up to pounding on your front door and finding the cast and crew of a ghost hunting series on your front porch. Needless to say, it was only a matter of time before it happened. For the moment they can't do any filming, but they are scoping out possible sites. They need to get a permit from the town before they do anything else. Brighton decides to escort them to the town council knowing they won't be happy about it but also know it's inevitable.
Once they have the permit, they start looking at sites and the citizens of Coventry are reporting trespassers left and right, keeping the sheriff's department running around to their calls.
Remy and Brighton keep a lid on the paranormal, but the council wants more from her. She's officially appointed babysitter so the number of calls to the Sheriff gets stopped.
After a couple of days camping out in different places, the star Kurt announces they are getting a room to shower before they do anymore. Before she even realizes it, Brighton invites them to shower a Hangman's House. With Remy and Annika plus Meri and Brody they had them all covered to keep them from snooping. Oh, and she also offers to feed them.
While they were hoping to do some investigating at the Courthouse, it was too late and although Brighton suggests the asylum in the next town, the ghost hunters have something else in mind. They want to do Hangman's House and they are surprised Brighton doesn't know the house's history.
Of course, the first place they want to check out is the basement, and Brighton worries when she sees Bobby drawing a pentagram and placing candles down there. This is not going to end well especially when they all start arguing over what Bobby was doing. Meri and Brighton agree they have to be stopped as the veil was thinning feeding off the anger and tension. Brighton suggests going outside to investigate the tree to cool off, but Bobby takes off and Rachel follows him.
The rest of the crew discuss letting Bobby go but decide to wait until the end of the season when his contract ends. Once again Brighton does the unthinkable and invites them to stay instead of them getting a room at the inn.
The next day finds Kurt dead in the tree and thinks get really crazy after that.
Brighton has to prove it was murder and not suicide so they can't use it to increase the show's ratings. She'll also have to figure out who did it.
All this on top of Thorn, mostly ignoring her while trying to work out parental rights over his daughter Dani with his ex-wife Sara.
So much going on, and this book will certainly keep you on your toes. Some surprises and some things we just knew had to happen.
I love reading this as a boxset since I can easily move on to the next book.
Synopsis: When Ghost Seekers, a celebrity ghost hunting team, knocks on Brighton’s door to try to film at Hangman’s house, Brighton knows she has to get them out of town fast. Unfortunately, despite help from the Skeenbauers, she’s not that successful, and suddenly one of the cast is found dead in the hanging tree outside Hangman’s house. Although the coroner rules it suicide, Brighton has her suspicions and is investigating with her witchy friends to uncover what really happened.
What I liked: -I really liked that Rémy and Annika were more involved in this novel than in the previous because I love the relationship dynamic between them and Brighton. Rémy and Annika have a fun sibling vibe and I’m still holding out hope that Rémy and Brighton can be together because… -it seems like Brighton and Thorn FINALLY broke up this book 🙌 Thorn’s ex wife and daughter showed up at the beginning of the last book which seems to finally have exposed Thorn for the jerk he has always been. He has these hang ups about making things right with his “family” who happens to be his ex wife who cheated on him with his brother… I completely understood him wanting to act as a dad to his daughter who he didn’t know existed, but I don’t understand how he got sucked back into a relationship with his ex who cheated and ghosted. -I actually enjoyed the ghost hunting team. I love how they exposed some of the secrets and history of Hangman’s house to Brighton. I hope we get more developments in the future books.
What I didn’t like: -There are these odd scenes that seem like they have no real purpose in the context of the book. For example there is this weird scene where Brighton and Rémy are talking to a cat they think is Merri. Then the real Merri shows up a little while later and Merri goes on a hunt, but we never hear about it again. I feel like this is going to be part of a larger arc in the series, but it seems completely out of place in and of itself in the books. -I still feel like the individual plots are not developed enough. The murder plot in this one didn’t even happen until midway through the book and was solved in the last 7 or so minutes of the audiobook.
Final Thoughts: This was the best of the Coventry witch books so far. It is still a very short read, but the arcs that happen over the course of the books are developing really nicely. The book as a stand alone is still really quick, with a fast pace, and not too much depth, but is really enjoyable.
Brighton was telling Annika that Thorn had left the night before to talk to his ex-wife about the fact she came back to town with a child that looked just like Thorn! Brighton was nervously waiting for his call to clarify the situation. She was dreading that he would go back with his ex-wife, because he was an honorable guy and that’s what he think was right. So they had another pitcher of margaritas, and Brighton woke up the next morning with a pounding headache, which actually turned out to be a bunch of people pounding at her door!
One of them introduced himself as Kurt Holmes, from the show Ghost Seekers, and they were hoping her house was abandoned so they could investigate it and film it. She directed them across the street into the woods where they would find an old cemetery, and she told them she would get dressed and join them there. Then she would also take them to the courthouse since they needed a filming license – the witches on the town council were not going to be too pleased about this situation. Fortunately for the town, the magic that causes the human residents of Coventry to ignore the magic around them works on visitors too, so they wouldn’t “find” anything to film. The council can decide what to do with them and their cameras that might inadvertently catch something. So Brighton was assigned as their escort!
As can be expected, when one of the film crew turns up dead at Hangman’s House, it will take all of Brighton’s skills to find the murderer. Will she be successful? And what is happening with Thorn’s situation?
This is a wonderfully fun continuation of the Wicked Witches of Coventry books. This time the murder is definitely closer to home! Grab your copy and try to solve the mystery with Brighton! The characters are well-presented and many are familiar by now. The action never stops as the story line races through to the conclusion. Make sure you’re along for the breathtaking ride!
Brighton is not having a great week. Thorn has been very distant since the discovery of his daughter. Rather than being a couple and working through the situation together and trying to determine how his daughter fits their lives, he seems to be withdrawing more and more. Initially, it seemed he was breaking up with Brighton all together, then later maybe not so much. Moving forward, either they are part of a team together, or not. Some things really are just that simple.
Never a good day when some kind of ghost hunters come knocking at your door first thing in the morning. Can Brighton help protect the witches from b I got accidentally filmed? This seems an odd bunch. Are they a threat to more or other than paranormals?
Annika and brother Brody seem to be finding their way together. Brighton seems to be a bit torn by this. Can her friend and her recently separated brother be ready for their next act, together?
And what about Remy? Has he moved beyond whatever darkness held him? He is the one Brighton thought she would choose before he pulled away and got so dark. Is their relationship, whatever it is, strong enough to hold them together?
Doing the right thing might be hard sometimes. Sometimes it is pretty simple, but maybe not the choice you really want to make.
Intense KU read!
I borrowed this book from Kindle Unlimited. I also got an advance copy from Booksprout. Looking forward to seeing how this series moves forward. I also like how it is a good standalone read read as well since there is enough background in each book to follow.
My goodness so much is happening in this one, both where feelings are concerned and also the mystery part.
So there are ghost hunters in town, working for a show and they intend to investigate the town of Coventry for Paranormal activity.
Brighton ends up being their hostess as the town council thinks that Brighton can better stop them from wandering around and stumbling upon the secrets the town has been hiding.
There is one thing that I really felt irked by with Brighton and that's the way she wouldn't say No to the crew of ghost hunters when they asked to investigate any place. Initially I got why she did it, but later I just felt Brighton was acting silly here and ignoring the repercussions of what could happen.
Oohh.. The adventure and the thrill is there as we go around town following the crew and knowing more of the history of the various places in Coventry. Some really dark historical things and not so pleasant. Especially the history of the hangman's house itself.
I was so glued listening to this one and where Brighton and her love life is concerned, I WAS SO FREAKING SHOCKED AND yet pleasantly surprised when this twist comes out of nowhere.
Honestly I was absolutely delighted with this turn and even though things were building up, I so didn't at all see this happening and ahhh.... Yes to the freaking yes to this twist.
I'm beyond excited to see what we have in store next with Brighton and her shenanigans and our dear cat, Meri. Loved this one. ♥️♥️♥️
I love the ease of reading and how quick the stories are...you don't want to put them down.... Is Coventry's secrets about to be found out? A famous ghost hunting show starts to poke around Coventry and they literally bang on Hangman's House door...Brighton answers the knock and finds the crew at her door wanting to shoot the show at her house and around town...Uh oh! Let's let the town council decide what to do...the witches on the council have hidden themselves by spells on the towns people...but town council approves letting the crew film around town with Brighton as their escort. Brighton has her job cut out for herself... Does the Ghost Seekers crew find their ghosts? After a night of filming and looking for ghosts one of their own ends up dead? How? Well you just have to read the book to find out... I'm not one to talk about the cover art because I never base a book by it's cover...but I absolutely love the simplistic art of the cover...it covers the whole aspect of the story...not to mention Brighton's hair colour...yes it is changing again..
Brighton was having some troubles with her boyfriend. He seemed to be spending a lot of time with his daughter and ex. Remy always was there to support her. In addition to relationship problems, she had her brother there and ghost busters hanging around. When one of them is found hanging from a tree in her yard, she needed to find out who was responsible.
This is a paranormal mystery/romance and is part of the Wicked Witches of Coventry series. This is a wonderful cozy mystery series full of quirky, fun and interesting characters that grab your interest and make you engaged in their story. The narrative does a great job of describing scenes and highlighting the characters. I find the dialogue interesting and conversational. The mystery was interesting full of suspicious suspects, surprises and suspense. Brighton’s love interests and the ghost busters investigation were woven nicely into the smooth flowing storyline. This was a good cozy paranormal mystery and is part of a wonderful series.
Brighton finds herself elected to be the official Coventry escort to a crew of famous ghost hunters. They want to film paranormal occurrences happening at different parts of town, while the witches part of the town council wants to rein them in from discovering the real truth.
When one of the film crew members turns up dead at Brighton’s very own Hangman’s House, she finds herself working overtime keeping the town’s secrets hidden. If that isn’t bad enough, Thorn discovers he has a daughter which causes a rift between him and Brighton. Can they resolve their issues or will the couple find themselves un-coupled?
Only with the help of Brighton’s loyal friends can she uncover the murderer and save the day. With a good mix of humor, romance, paranormal intrigue, mystery, and adventure, this cozy mystery was a perfect weekend read by the pool.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Ugh. This series is just getting worse & I'm not understanding all the 4 & 5 star reviews. Brighton has no spine (until the last 3 pages) and continues to get in the middle of murder investigations. Granted this one was on her property, but being spineless & stupid, she allowed a group of strangers to stay in her house which is why there was a murder there.
Thorn turns out to not only also be spineless, but a bag of dicks. Their "relationship" never felt like one (they never spent the night together) & it turns out he's as big of an ass hole as the one she divorced.
I'm fine with her friendship with Remy, but not a relationship which seems like will be coming. The only redeeming characters in this series are Annika & Meri and sadly we didn't geta lot of them in this one. Thank heavens this was a shorter novella.
Also, proofreading a book before publishing is a fantastic way to not look like a moron. This was full of typos!!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
In this book a group of paranormal hunters who investigate paranormal phenomena for a show come to the town of Coventry. Brighton is given the job of 'babysitting' them and to make sure they don't get any footage of evidence of anything they shouldnt. Brighton's relationship with Thorn goes through a bad patch where he deals with the unexpected news he received in the previous book. I was quite disappointed with the way Thorn changed in this book. I was loving their pairing before I read this book but felt very sad after reading this book. The murder mystery didn't seem to be solved and no explanation was given. It just felt a bit hurried with regard to the investigation. I wonder where the story will go from here. It will be interesting to read the next instalment and find out.
This really fell flat for me and likely will mark the end of my reading this series.
A group of ghost-hunters come to town to film. The witches want them to get nothing and then leave, and Brighton is given that job. Fine.
So she invites them to poke all around her house (which is a very magical house) and almost gets a demon. (Why the HELL does she go out of her way to encourage them?). And there is a murder (well, of course), with absolutely insanely incompetent investigation by Thorne, at all -- like, you know, checking for footprints. And Brighton uses her *only* means of investigation to track the murder -- she breaks into an office. Because of course she does. And she decides to go look for the murderer in a tunnel. Of course.
The characters went really flat. Even Meri was not a joy. At least the Thorne soap opera ends.
A great new urban fantasy/cozy mystery series. Break cast of characters and entertaining stories. Are young woman gets divorced lose her job and then inherits her great aunts house in a small town. She decides to pack up and move to small-town living the house fix it up and then decide what’s going to go on in her life. Weird things start happening come to find out she’s a witch. She comes from a long line of witches. Her family and one other which family founded the small town she now lives in. Follow along as her and her new friends solve mysteries murders and Mayham. And if you’ve been reading the series so far there’s a weird twist in this one. Check them all out very entertaining
A ghost hunting team has come to Coventry. The local witches couldn't tell them not to come so they've hired Brighton to be their official minder. They give it a pretty name but she's going to make $3,000, more if she can get them to leave in a week. Brighton is fine with that but she soon learns that the team knows more about her house than she does. And then one of them ends up dead. She doesn't need this on top of the fact that Thorne is investigating the murder but somehow dodging her calls. None of the Wicked Witches of Coventry books are very deep and this is no different. If you are looking for a well- or tightly-plotted mystery, this is not going to be the series for you. But fast, fun, and fluffy? Bourgeois has you covered!
Sara Bourgeois has written another delightful book in the Witches of Coventry series. Murder comes to Brighton's Hangman's House when the Ghost Seekers come to investigate the town of Coventry. Brighton is assigned to be their liaison aka 'babysitter'; by the town council. Brighton has to try to solve the murder as well as deal with her relationship with Thorn. I love the characters in these books; they are well-written and most are very likeable.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This was a good read but didn't grab me like the other books, I felt like how things panned out with Thorn seemed a bit too easy and how it ends with the Ghost Seekers. However in saying that it was good to see Brighton's friends rally for her and find out some more history of the town as well as the original owner of Brighton's house which is not what I expected and do hope we get to explore the new find in the house!!

Love will prevail, as does hate and ambition and greed in some. This is a fun series, the characters are so varied and keep you on your toes wondering what will happen next. The ghost hunting team was a fun twist that added more depth to the story. Having a surprise ending was great. Ms. Bourgeois writes fun stories and the plots keep you guessing. Brighton is a wonderful character and Meri is a total life saver and great familiar. Love that cat. You will enjoy this series, hope the next book comes out soon. Purchased this book through KU and very glad I did.
Now what's the worst thing that can happen if you're trying to keep your town of witches secret? Have a television crew show up looking for ghosts and anything paranormal.
So, who gets selected by the town council to try to keep everything under wraps even with the tv crew there? Brighton, of course. Just what she needed.
If that's not enough, Thorn, her boyfriend, seems to be breaking up with her. Add to that one of the film crew turns up dead.
Really most sincerely dead.
Well, at least she gets to find out about the history of her house.
Again still Loving it but it's created a small problem
Okay I really like this series I love getting the backstory and there's somebody's backstory in there that I've really have to wait and see. I don't want to give away any spoilers but there is one character who is a totally different character in The familiar kitten series, and I want to know how that character got that way. And now that I think about it after I finish this series I may end up having to start the familiar kitten series all over again.
Very different from most cozy mysteries, like the characters are lot! I gave it a 4 rating because of so many typos. Who does your editing?? This is so unnecessary to have so many mistakes. Message me for a final read through before final printing! I'm a great reader and proofer!
Wow, these really are just novellas. It’s like binge watching a tv show that’s only a half hour, not an hour. This one was 3-1/2 hrs to listen to the audio version. A few things seemed hard to believe: e.g. this tv show crew didn’t want to find out where the tunnel ended?! And the motive—& technique—for the murder was rather weakly explained.
A group of ghost hunters come to town and Brighton is put in charge of keeping them out of trouble. It is a difficult duty when they can't seem to get along. Another murder occurs for Brighton to solve. I enjoy how the town is growing to trust Brighton more. I love her familiar, Meri, and the fun he brings to the book.
