This series got better with each book. And what luck to have discovered it a few days before the final book came out so I could finish it all at once!

Middle grade fantasy that has positive LGBTQ relationships (without making a big deal out of it. Like, it’s just normal?!) Thank you!!

we really aren’t happy about Zed being gay.

My name is Micah, and I've suspected for awhile that something was wrong with Zed. I know I've treated him like crap, but he was behaving stranger than normal. Then, he appeared in my dream and told me what was going on. A witch named Makiva took over his body, and she was responsible for the massacre in the town square. I don't think Zed fully knows what she's planning, but he wanted me to exorcise her from his body. Unfortunately, I tried but wasn't powerful enough to free him from her control. To Liza and Brock, the exorcism looked like I was bullying Zed again, so no one will trust anything I have to say. They don't know what I really think about him. Everyone in Freestone fears a repeat of the Day of Dangers, and I'm beginning to suspect Makiva is trying to summon it again.

You should read the previous books in the series to fully understand the background story of this trilogy. I never imagined I'd use Micah's point of view to share the teaser. He was a pompous, arrogant character and hard to like. This book showed there was more depth to his character hidden beneath his cocky exterior. The previous books have described a growing bond between the new Adventurers, but their unity was in peril. Makiva's efforts and characters' secrets eroded the harmony. The fun twist to the plot was how Zed's soul was a character but had no influence over how Makiva controlled his body. His etheral spirit observed everything going on but wasn't able to communicate with any other characters, except for Micah. Dark magic was abhored by the king and all the guilds, so Micah couldn't tell anyone about Zed without risking his life. Unlike the previous two books, the third one took place within the walls of Freestone. The characters seemed to venture into all kinds of previously unvisited nooks and crannies, while trying to resolve the conflict. It took them quite awhile to fully understand the real problem, so the suspense was able to slowly build. Overall, I really liked this series and recommend you give it a shot.

Night of Dangers (The Adventurers Guild #3) by Zack Loran Clark and Nick Eliopulos, 387 pages. Disney, 2019. $17.

Language: G (0 swears, 0 “f”); Mature Content: G; Violence: PG (some fighting and danger)

BUYING ADVISORY: EL, MS - ESSENTIAL

AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH

Zed and the rest of the Adventuere’s Guild have saved the elves, but Zed is in serious trouble and no one else knows it. In order to save the day he made a pact with the witch Malkiva and now she has complete control of his body. And this isn’t the first time she’s done this. Over the centuries she has possessed many other, causes havoc all over the worlds. It may be through using Zed that she finally gets what she wants to Terryn forever.

Night of Dangers is a much stronger book than #2 was. From the afterword it sounds like this may be the last of the series. I’m glad it went out on a high note!

WOW!! I was truly shocked how good this series was. I was not expecting it to be this good!! I defiantly recommend it! The story in this book was sooo good. I was hooked it only took me 8 days to finish it! There were so many twists and turns that even took me by surprise. I love the characters in this series so much, this series will defiantly be one i re-read! I was nervous on how this was going to end. But I wouldn't change how it did. It didn't leave me wanting more. Which is always a plus!
If you are reading the reviews to see if you should read this series then here is your sign!!

4* A good conclusion to this series which I read to my 9 year old son Lucas.

The series wrapped up well with a cool twist I didn't see coming near the end which although it didn't necessarily affect the ending it was an interesting little twist to what you thought was happening.

My 9 year old enjoyed this series a lot although it is quite poetically wordy at times. The authors do really like to lay on thick with the descriptions and their choice of vocabulary. Personally I found this sort of nice, but for a 9 year old a bit too much, likely this is aimed at the 15+ audience I would imagine.

Worth reading to your kids, or recommending to young YA fantasy readers, but i'd skip for more gritty tales unless you like it PG.

I really enjoyed this series! It's not perfect - the second book is the weakest, imho - but I really enjoyed the characters and the setting and the ride it took us on. I couldn't put down the last book (figuratively speaking, since I listened to it as an audiobook), which I feel was the strongest of the series.

This is the story of two boys (their POVs alternate throughout the series), Zed, a shy half-elf sorcerer, and Brock, his mouthy best friend and aspiring merchant, who get drafted into the Adventurers' Guild against their wishes. The Adventurers Guild is the last barrier between the city and the fearsome monsters outside, and the boys' training leaves them exposed to terrifying dangers that they must learn to vanquish alongside the other young draftees they eventually learn to form a team with.

I really liked most of the characters, both main and minor. I appreciated the cast of strong, competent female characters. Though it sometimes felt like Liza was a bit too good at too many things, she was still ultimately human, and am I going to enjoy reading about a girl whose fiercest wish is to become a knight, and who is good at it, too? You bet, I am. And Frond! The grumpy, deadly guild mistress is definitely a character that will stick with me. I love both how flawed and determined she was. And Fel was such a sweetheart. I love how all of the side characters got to play their roles and they ultimately became a team.

I also appreciated the presence of multiple queer characters, a rare feature in middle grade books, let alone adventure-type ones.

Ultimately, I had a really good time listening to these three books, would definitely recommend if you're looking for a quick, entertaining read!

(Fair warning if you're thinking of giving this to a young child that I did think the descriptions were occasionally fairly horrific (floating eyeballs and all) for a middle-grade book - though as an adult, I enjoyed that.)

I read this entire series to my 5th grader. We both loved all the books and really enjoyed experiencing them together. We looked forward to each new chapter and but of the story. However, this book was my favorite of the trilogy. The inclusion if LGBTQ characters was a wonderful addition to an already stunning middle grade series, and it was done in such a nonchalant manner.

A lovely finish for a lovely series!

Had some problems here and there but nothing that would prevent me from enjoying the ending of this story. I was at the edge of my seat for the most part of the last half of the book and I’m really happy with the way everything was resolved.

There’s also some nice representation which I truly appreciate!

I'm not sure how to feel about a major character being revealed to have a crush on the protagonist. I'm not sure how to parse it being This is a difficult book to classify, because I don't recall there being any hint , which was true for a long time in various real-life societies. That it would be rare and secret would explain why its existence (from the perspective of ) would have only been brought up here, when it's important to the plot.

If you don't like romance, and have built up a tolerance for passing mentions of hetero romantic relationships as a necessity simply because it's nigh-inescapable (at least in U.S. culture), then you may be happy to know is incorporated into the plot in a subtle and entertaining way. Most of the

On the whole: there's no way one would have guessed a romantic relationship would have eventually become important to the plot from previous books, and the way it's done here is certainly unexpected. Still, it's simply a minor, odd note to the flavor of the book, which is practically unaffected by it, and remains very enjoyable.

Having read Wings of Fire: The Flames of Hope (by Tui Sutherland) earlier in the same month, I wasn't as impressed with the plot twist in this book. I have half a mind to prefer the villain to just be a super-powerful witch. It's odd that both Mother Brenner and , who were villains/built up to be villains, were ultimately just women manipulated by dark forces. , too, was manipulated. (There was a female villain in the second book, I think? I tried refreshing my memory by reading reviews, but I couldn't find it in a quick look)

History is repeating itself; in the worst way possible. Zed is being possessed by Makiva, a powerful witch who made a deal with him so that he could gain more magic. Makiva's goal is to reopen the doorway to other magical places and for the Day of the Dangers to repeat again. Zed is unable to stop Makiva in spirit form and seeks help from Micah, who's the only one that can see him. A mage has a strange animal from another plane that causes it to attack several people in the market. The Adventurers Guild is becoming on edge, people must form alliances, choose sides, and Frond doesn't know who she can trust anymore. Brock is finally free from Lady Grey, although she has other plans. When Brock's secrets are revealed, tension arises between his friends, but together they must work together to save Terryn.

This book really blew me away, it was absolutely exceptional and my favorite book in the series! All the problems I had with the books prior were given time to be done in this book. We really got to see a lot more about the secondary cast of characters or the side characters. Micah was especially focused on it. There was a twist to his character that I noticed earlier on but wasn't sure if it was actually going to be a topic that I would be focused on. His character was given layers and complexity as we dived into why he was always so mean to Zed. Micah likes Zed, but was hoping that his feelings directed toward boys would go away because he felt embarrassed. There were scenes amid the terror and turmoil that focused a lot on the characters' emotional growth.

The balance of character-driven and plot-driven this book was a great balance. Something apparent throughout the whole series was the phenomenal world-building. There was a plot twist between a plot twist that really took me by surprise. This book was really unique in the magic system. It followed those generic sort of usual magic standards but then added touches of innovative magic. Magical planes are something I haven't seen before. I loved how books one and two were tied together. The magical planes of Fie, Nox, Mort, Lux, Astra, and Fey were really different and cool. I loved that there was an elf language! But I also loved how djinn were introduced, which made it more interesting. Introduced,

This book really focuses on friendship, and how it can grow apart. Both authors really focused on that morally grey area where the antagonists weren't wrong or right. The ending was very satisfying, and conclusive. The magical vibes and themes in this book were amazing and I really loved this last book in the trilogy!

THE ADVENTURERS GUILD: NIGHT OF DANGERS by Zack Loran Clark and Nick Eliopulos is the culmination of a Middle Grade Fantasy series about two best friends, Zed and Brock, who will do anything to save each other. The story picks up after Zed has been possessed by an evil witch, Makiva, who is bent on bringing an end to Freestone forever. Without his body, Zed’s spirit floats around trying to warn Brock of impending doom, but the longer it takes, Zed begins to think evil’s going to win this time.

Having not read the first two books in this series, I can confidently say this novel also works perfectly well as a standalone. I was never confused or unsure about what was happening, nor did I feel like I was missing critical information from earlier events. However, because I love this story so much, I want to go back and read the first two installments just to spend more time in this world.

The cast of characters is fairly large, but they all are unique in their own ways, and each one contributes to the plot. My favorite character is Liza and her knight gender-bending— I certainly would trust her to protect me! The authors also do a great job at shaping the tone of the book for their target demographics. It’s humorous, light, practical, and honest— and it matches the energy of most kids I know. In addition, the way the authors portray the story romances is appropriate and representative, which I can only assume most parents will appreciate.

Overall, THE ADVENTURERS GUIDE: NIGHT OF DANGERS is a brilliant tale of friendship, betrayal, destiny, and monsters—there are a lot of those. I’d highly recommend this book to people of any age, but adults can feel safe giving this novel to a middle grader, especially because it’s so much fun. As an added plus, the artwork is fantastic.

This book took awhile for me to get into. Maybe it has just been too long since I've read the first two in the series that I didn't have a good feel for the characters.

It picked up for me around the halfway mark and I was ALL IN by 3/4 of the way through. I HAD TO KNOW what was going to happen. I love all the twists and turns this book takes and how it gave you bits and pieces of the whole picture one little bit at a time. It was a lovely mystery/fantasy.

I'm not sure if this is the end of our adventurers story or not, but I do feel like they left an opening for another book.

The book closes with something I read 5 or 6 times in a row, and something 2020 has set ablaze for me in my own life:

(I think I can quote this without giving away anything from the storyline....)

"The world has changed, and no amount of wishing could restore it to the way it was before. But there was laughter, still. And magic of all sorts. There was friendship, and love.

All of these things were proof of life, and of the value of life. They were little points of light in the dark. Alone, set against all the world's darkness, the didn't amount to much.

But put them together, and you had a tapestry of blazing light.

A sea of stars."

This book was full of surprises, and good ones I might add. Gonna be honest this one wasn't as good as 2, but I still really enjoyed it. Unlike the last two books this one was almost entirely in Freestone, which I was interesting. Instead of it being a big adventure, it was all about the characters. I really loved both Brock and Zed in this book, and the other characters grew on me even more. I will say Micah and Zed kinda came out of no where, but I loved it when it was here so who cares. I liked getting to learn about Makiva and Foster and all the history, and the plot in the middle was fantastic. My only problem was that the climax felt a little rushed, and almost easy, but other than that I loved the build up. The way it ended with all of them at a guildculling was great, I'm a sucker for full circle moments. I'm gonna miss them more than I expected.

I enjoyed this more than the second book, but not as much as the first. With so many characters added to the roster, it's difficult for all of them to be equally developed, and so most of them weren't as explored as deeply as they were in the earlier books (though they still remain likable). The main conflict here was more interesting and layered compared to the previous ones, as the threat of the Dangers on the town felt more like a subplot compared to the threat of Makiva possessing Zed. The story behind the antagonist's motivations was also interesting but felt like it came a little out of nowhere. I also feel the same way with the romantic development between Micah and Zed -- though it added further insight to Micah's actions early in the first book, I feel like there weren't enough hints to make the reveal feel organic.

Overall, a solid trilogy and a fun read. 3.5 stars.

The most perfect ending!!! When Zed finally gets through to his friends was amazing. The fact that he was first able to get through to Micah actually made sense, and I was happy that Zed got his happy ending. When Brock finds out was even better, though so sad... I almost thought Zed wasn't going to make it at first when the portal opened for the Dangers, but Makiva got what was finally coming her her. Or should I say for the Djinn. That might have been the most shocking part. When you find out it wasn't Makiva at all, but a Danger was definitely a great plot twister. Everybody got their happy ending though. ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS EVER!!!

Hahaha, I didn't even know this is the last book in a trilogy (fully expecting there'll be more books coming). Anyhow, a good ending I'm okay with. However, the world could've been explored so much more and more time spent with these characters in more books. Makes me a bit sad.
Some parts were not so well executed, I feel. But again, throughout the story, I was disgusted, laughed, was surprised, snorted, rooted for them, smiled, was entertained. Full package. Glad I stumbled upon The Adventurers Guild.

I was really pleased with the final installment of this series. It was much better than book 2.
Over the course of the books, I felt a true interest in the characters and their stories. The friendship of Zed and Brock held the story together. Could there be a more interesting character than Frond?

Librarians, be prepared for this to be challenged. I don't want to include a spoiler but please stand tall and encourage your review committees to do the same!

Must read for D&D fans, great way to introduce it to the kids

An excellent series to read with the kids. Reminded me a lot of my own D&D adventures.
Even as an adult I was desperately keen to find out how it all ended. It's nice to read a book with the children that isn't completely predictable. The characters have a wonderful amount if depth and growth.

My son would like to add: this book has inspired me to make my own books and try D&D.

This book was fantastic. I loved the first one, but I find the authors found their style here.

I sometimes felt like the 12 year old main characters felt more grown up than they were supposed to be. It confused me a little bit, but I doubt a middle grade reader would pick up on that.
I am excited to share these with my daughter when she is older.

This trilogy was a fascinating read. I would have loved this when I was a kid. As an adult I admired this for it's creativity, inclusion and newness of a cliche genre. Apparently, this is the last book. Would have loved to have seen these characters grow and mature. Fun read for kids and adults, definitely want to share this around.

So...it wasn't until I reached the end of this book that I discovered that it was a trilogy, and this was the concluding volume. There is definitely room for a spin-off series of the authors so choose, but overall this was a great finale, and I'm going to miss the Adventurers Guild. It was a very adventurous and entertaining series.

At first I did not like this book very well, because I hated seeing Zed possessed. However, it got better. The story is a good one and I like that it wrapped up well - not leaving me hanging like the second book had. The characters and writing in the whole series are excellent. I think I like the first and third books best.

This book is great. I loved the Micah/Zed romance and it made me read back to other books, where I saw hints of this. The ending is great on how they destroyed Makiva and I love Foster. The authors broke my heart but repaired it well. I cannot imagine a world where this book doesn't exist. I would recommend with no hesitation.

The third and last book in a marvelous serie.
With every book the story got better.
However it took me a little bit more focus to get into the last story line properly / focused, there is a lot happening!

Dangers have infiltrated the city Freestone again!
Will the Day of Dangers repeat itself again?
Characters are being forced to form alliances and choose sides.

I really liked this series. I was bummed that it is only a trilogy. I did not know that when I started reading. I was almost done with the Night of Dangers when I realized that it was going to be over. It was like I had no time to say goodbye to the characters. I had hoped that there would be an adventure to the Dwarves.
