Funding continues to be a major obstacle as Hachiken tries to get his business up and running. Ookawa―still unemployed―has pinned all his hopes on Hachiken’s new venture, so when proposal after proposal comes back rejected, he suggests a new source of funding: good, honest hard work. Picking up whatever part-time jobs he can, Hachiken pours every ounce of energy into realizing his goal. The year seems to fly by, but when spring comes again, will his efforts finally blossom into reality?
Hiromu Arakawa (author: 荒川弘) is a Japanese manga artist, best known for Fullmetal Alchemist (鋼の錬金術師 Hagane no renkinjutsushi). Her real name is Hiromi Arakawa
Arakawa was born and raised on a dairy farm in Hokkaidō. She thought of being a manga artist since she was little. After graduating high school, she took oil painting classes while working on her family's farm. During that time, she also created dōjinshi manga with her friends and drew yonkoma for a magazine. After eight years she moved to Tōkyō and started out as assistant writer for Hiroyuki Etō. Her debut as manga artist is in 1999 with STRAY DOG. In 2001 she started working on her famous and award winning series Fullmetal Alchemist, that soon gets a successful anime adaptation. Other works include Silver Spoon (銀の匙 Silver Spoon, Gin no saji Silver Spoon).
The final story arc begins! Only three more volumes left in one of my favorite current manga series!!??!!??
The lessons learned from previous volumes start to bear fruit as Hachiken and his friends begin to get serious about planning for life after high school graduation. Looks like this series is going to finish strong!
This volume has so many story lines coming together! The equestrian club is competing again. Hachiken is trying to get his business plan together to start his own company, and he gets the help of his friends to finalize his ideas. They do a lot of research about raising pigs.
As always, I love to see how Hachiken puts all his energy into his projects. He is really determined, and all his hard work and effort wins him the admiration of his friends.
Wow! Year two is flying by. It was June before we knew it! I thought we’d get a larger cast of first years, but it seems the core cast is actually shrinking. Hachiken and Ookawa get a firmer grasp of their business plan and welcome new piglets into their grand experiment even without the aid of Daddy Hachiken’s investment. The near confession to Mikage only to be disrupted by a piggy assault was funny as heck! A lot happens quickly in this one, but the main threads all seem to be on course. Beautiful art abounds as usual.
This series is very well written, researched and drawn but I do have to admit that I’m getting bored and burnt out!!!!! It hurts to say it. The story is getting along now at a faster pace but it’s all about Hachiken wanting to start a business. Yay, I’m glad he’s determined and has a dream (finally!) but it’s not the most interesting thing lol.
Also, if you were wondering about the “romance”, ain’t a damn thing happening lol. Hachiken is too scared of Aki’s dad and Aki is … well Aki!!! Too nice to do anything as well!!! I wasn’t expecting any romance by this mangaka anyway so it’s not really a disappointment…
Komaba is the character I’m most interested in. I am really wondering how things will turn out for him.
The final arc is here and I'm not ready for this series to end.
The kids at Ezo Ag are thinking about their future and working hard to figure our their place and turn their school connections into working ones that gives the volume a bittersweet feeling that things are ending but the characters won't scatter to the winds and lose touch,
I'm reading the final volumes of Giant Days at the same time as this and how these series are handling the wind down is like night and day. At the University of Sheffield school has ceased to exist to the point where the characters could be high school students or entry level workers and it wouldn't change the plots at all.
Wash. Cómo que pasó un año entero en un sólo volumen si el año anterior abarcó 11 volumenes. El elenco ya está en su último año de preparatoria. A pesar de lo corto que fue el segundo año la aurora realmente se esforzó por contar lo justo y necesario para el avance de la historia. De repente hay capítulos con argumento múltiple donde podemos ver hasta tres tramas distintas al mismo tiempo. Estoy ansioso por ver cómo termina todo. Sólo quedan tres volúmenes ;-;
I continue to love each installment in this series. I love how Haichiken is starting to figure out what he wants to do outside of school, and finding the ways to fund it and do what makes him happy with his skills. We also see that his dad is pushing him, but in a way that makes Haichiken work harder rather than run away. I always look forward to the next volume in the story.
Jadi setelah Hachiken akhirnya tahu apa yg ingin dikerjakannya, ceritanya jadi dipercepat.
Ubi bakar manis, drool....
This is where the story becomes an anthology. Snippets of the gang's 2nd and 3rd year. Compared to the whopping 10 volumes for Hachiken's freshman year. His 2nd year is rushed and his 3rd year extremely quickened. Followed by snapshots of his life and the rest of his friends after school.
And I feel the story telling went down hill for it. While there are still moments and comedic punchlines that reminded me of how I much I enjoyed this series. It's not the same. Everything feels so crammed and you are getting info dumped about everything to get a move on.
The ending actually was so weak. It didn't go out with a bang or fond melancholic memories. It's suddenly you are there! It's done!
Second year has officially begun! Hachiken is taking steps to get his business off the ground and is learning as much as he can about all things farm related to get experience. Free-range cows and hoof cultivation projects. Low cost pig farms and breeding pigs for eating. Making pizza for profit and creating a business proposal to please his father.
And Hachiken's enthusiasm and effort is contagious because all the students (Komaba included with some hilarious pushing from his mother) are all taking steps closer to their dreams and goals.
Hachiken and his peers enter their 2nd year of high school at Ezo Ag. They welcome some new first years into the Equestrian Club, including a girl who reminds Hachiken a lot of himself last year. The pork investors are trying to figure out how to make their product even more marketable. Hachiken decides to team up with Ookawa and actually give starting a business thing a shot. While several people are moving on to try new things outside of Ezo Ag.
It's kind of funny that this book covers the same amount of time in the school year that the first 10 books in the series covered of the first year. I'm not used to time moving so fast in this series. It does make sense for the topics covered, though. The book really explores how Hachiken has impacted the people around him in just 1 year of time, and it is inspiring to see. Interspersed among the serious stuff are humorous bits with the ringlets equestrian girl participating in another competition and a rumor spreading around campus that Hachiken's dad is part of the Japanese mafia. Recommended to those who are interested in Japanese agriculture (you'll lot about fallow land usage and pig raising methods in this book), and those who like contemporary fiction manga.
Notes on content: About 4 minor swears. No sexual content (unless you count some info on pig breeding). No violence.
As his second year at Ooezo Ag school begins, Hachiken searches for funding for a joint venture that would bind small farms into one large business.
This series continues to be wonderful and I'm bummed to see there are only three more volumes in the series. I like how each of our characters has at least a moment to shine: Mayumi gets to visit an ag school in France, thinking she can increase her cheese knowledge, and ends up taking care of fish; the Mikage's allow Hachiken's pig to pasture there and offer up their no-longer-used barn (since they had to get rid of their beloved horses due to finances) to be torn down and repurposed as a pig sty. My favorite bit was Komaba, who was able to take a chance on a job and is now actually smiling. He deserves it.
Sexual References: Nishikawa is explaining the differences in potato varieties and different ladies are used to illustrate the differences. Irish Cobbler is a girl wearing a skimpy bikini top.
Religious elements: The group writes down wishes at a temple so that they come true
This volume seems overconjested with content. While Hachiken is still working on creating a business, he is also working on other investiments to get start up cash, and some chapters are still diving into farm elements. There seems like there needs to be more comedy added back into the book to keep the story a bit lighter. It's still an incredible series and I will be continuing to the end.
TW: 19 ass, 77 pig sperm, 121 dumbass, 136 BS, pissed, hell; 153 "Don't forget you'd have your balls removed right after you were born."; 166 cleavage shown in a bikini top
Series Review: Great fun, great characters, great art, what's not to love? I really enjoy stories set in rural Japan and I do love the emphasis on agriculture as well as the thoughts on eating animals/meat. Oh, and there is a lot of food appreciation in this, it's utterly lovely though it did make me hungry quite a bit. It's a great slice of life manga that includes some unusual topics and handles them wonderfully approachable and in fun ways. The only thing that I didn't quite enjoy as much was the romance element in it. It is in no way overpowering, but it didn't add anything to the plot for me.
My favourite part of this series is the food appreciation. No, seriously, the majority of this manga is just looking at and talking about great food and its preparation. It really pulls you in and makes you appreciate food. The romance aspect is starting to get tiresome, but the food definitely makes up for that.
