3 bittersweet & to late stars

Okay let me just say that I love J.R. Ward. She is one a few authors that I will continue to read and forgive, even when they do crazy things like kill off beloved characters. The Shadows broke my heart and made me ugly cry, I still loved it and rated it five stars. Now I was hoping that Trez would get his HEA and I am glad he did. However this book was just one big blah for me. It was like I've moved on and now this book's done made me go back and relive the pain of The Shadows. I was wanting a happy sugary sweet Christmas love story. I wanted it to be cute and happy, but it was sad and painful for a lot of it. It brought me down. It was a bittersweet hea that in truth came to late for my liking. Top that off with the weak explanation of how it all happened....This book left me scratching my head and wondering what was the point????? They don't even find out til the end and then they don't get to remember...... They just know.... somehow..... magically even though they also don't know and they are ok with the wholes in their memories? WHAT???
Did I miss something? It wasn't cute it was confusing. It made no sense at all. Hell I don't think the warden knew how to work it so she just was like "it just is.... don't question it!"
I didn't hate the book but I didn't love it either. I thought the way Therese dealt with her adoption was just babyish. Who flips out and just disappears without saying a word. I could understand being mad or upset but if you knew your mom had a heart problem you don't just leave. I don't think she handled it well. Also I was one of the readers that was so upset when Tohr lost Wellsie and their young. I cried then too. I wanted Wellsie back like Rhage got Mary back. But when that didn't happen I accepted it and moved on. So when I got to Tohr's book I felt it was forced. It was like Warden was trying to make readers happy so she pushed Tohr into a mating that ended up feel like second place to him and wellsie. I didn't like it. Now that I'm over Trez's pain it's like Warden is trying to make readers who were mad over Selena's death happy and forced it. Oh well I hope I enjoy the next read better.

Merry Christmas Trez and Selena!
I was so prepared NOT to like this book. So absolutely prepared mentally to hate it. What was the point of this book really?
To change the ending of the saddest book in the Black Dagger universe? Yes, I am talking about The Shadows.
What could possibly happen in this book to make me reconsider that The Shadows should have a different ending?
Well, the answer is simple. The book proved to me a definite fact for myself. I just LOVE happy endings.
I don't care how they are delivered.
I don't even care if they are delivered almost 5 years late.
In romance books the happy endings are the norm!!!
You NEED to read about The Happily Ever After. You need to believe the fairy-tale and have only happy tears in the end.
Otherwise what's the point? Where is the ESCAPISM that the romance stories have the obligation to provide?

*deep spiritual sigh* I just can't anymore. This is literally a fan fiction plot line and considering Ward's stance on fan fiction she should be ashamed of herself. You kill off a character that we didn't care enough about to kill and you wreck a character we actually do care about, and after the backlash we get this drivel? If you were going to do this why couldn't we get Wellsie back!!!!!!! WHAT THE HELL!! Why couldn't we get Darius back!!! If you were just going to hand out immortality and bring people back why not the people we actually wanted to be brought back?!?!?!?

Me after reading Trez and Selena in The Shadows
What is this? Is Trez getting another chance at love?
Glad these two finally got their happy ending. I love JR Ward's writing style and this book didn't disappoint. It was really nice that this book focused solely on the main couple with our any distractions.
I only gave this a 3 star because the story itself was just ok. Trez's original storyline was far better than his second chance.

'The Shadows' is JR Ward's thirteenth book in her BDB series and I think it gutted me more than any of her other books. Ever since I read it, I was hoping that somewhere down the line, Trez would get his happy ever after. This book is the second part of his story.
Trez lost the love of his life and he just knew he would never find anyone again. He was used to the idea that he would live the rest of his life alone. Then, one night he meets Therese, and for the first time since his love left him, he started to feel again.
Therese hasn't been in Caldwell long. She moved there from Michigan after finding out some surprising news about her family. She's taken by Trez when she meets him, just as he's taken by her. But Trez is hiding something from her, and Therese is going through some family drama as well. All of this kind of put a damper on the romance imo.
There were some things in this story that just didn't add up for me. Also, Therese wasn't the most likable character. I listened to the audio book and the narrator, Jim Frangioni does an incredible job as always, but I wish Ward would have named Therese something else. Therese and Trez actually sound a lot alike on the audio when it's x2 speed.
As much as I love the black dagger brotherhood and Trez, this one was just okay for me.

Trez Latimer is a Shadow who not long ago sacrificed everything to mate with Selena, a Chosen. When she later died, a part of him did, too. His brother and those in his life who care for him worry that he’s lost his will to live and are concerned that he’ll take matters in his own hands. But recently, a young woman named Therese comes to work for iAm in his restaurant as a server and stuns all that see her because she’s a dead ringer for Selena.
I so love being back in the world of the Brotherhood. There’s nothing like these stories and characters, no matter the subject, especially on audio, and this one is no different. I will always listen to Jim Frangione narrate them as he’s a critical component of the whole experience.
Since Therese entered the series, I’ve been waiting for this story and am happy it came during the holiday season. That Trez and Therese would eventually come together was inevitable and my hope was that it be imaginative and unconventional. To some degree it was, augmented in part with some involvement by others (we get some serious Lassiter time). Trez moves cautiously and Therese is inexplicably drawn to him but she has no idea of her visual connection to Selena. You know at some point this will culminate into something dramatic but the journey there was passionate and heartwarming. I rooted for them.
When Selena died, I just didn’t feel like that was Trez’s story or fate. Some fans of the series were disturbed by the author’s decisions to follow this path (I wasn’t), even though it was an extremely well written book. I just didn’t think that was the end for some reason. For me, this filled that void left after the conclusion of The Shadows. Did things wrap up a bit easily? Maybe. But, this time, it feels complete. 4.5 stars

My Review:
I was a late convert to the Brotherhood, I’ve only read two so far but I was quickly hooked. This world and characters are all new to me so I’m several football fields behind the eight-ball in understanding how they all fit together with their backstories and special language, but I don’t care, I am completely blown away by the stellar quality of the writing.
J.R. War obviously loves words and she knows how to use them and arrange them in the most arresting and entertaining manner. I find her lore intriguing and her characters uniquely fascinating and complicated with complex histories and rich interior lives. Her narratives are densely packed with profoundly wordy insights and inner musings that dissect each thought and observation into intensely detailed minuscule pieces that captivate and enthrall. The storylines are multifaceted, highly sensual, and surprisingly amusing with unexpected outbursts of humor, such as an angel who boogies and swears. I wonder if I would live to tell the tale if I cleared my calendar for a month and read the entire series sequentially? At the very least, I would definitely need to stock up on wine and underwear before attempting such a daring feat.

Trez and Selena (Therese) are getting their second chance at love at last in a reincarnation story line. But does Trez love Therese for her, or just because she has the same face as his ex? And what’s with the weird looks everyone keeps giving her, lol? This novella brought back some of my favorite characters we hadn’t seen in a while Some hot steamy scenes and I especially enjoyed all the Lassiter moments.

I don't know why I even bothered. Even an appearance by my beloved Rehv couldn't get me to like this story. I think Ward also made me dislike Lassiter now.
This was clearly nothing more than Ward pandering to those who were angry at the end of The Shadows, which I wasn't, because I loved that book. The storyline was ridiculous, with the timeline and the reincarnation being given a very vague explanation at the end, that made little sense. I would say don't even bother reading it. All you need to know is that all this book does is reincarnate Selena in a way that makes little sense, and into a relationship that had no real feelings, in a story that was poorly written and poorly edited. I almost gave up about 30 percent through due to boredom and now I'm annoyed that I didn't. The only thing hot about this book was the fire near the end.
If this is how things now seem to work in the BDB universe, I'm really hoping we get Wellsie and her son's reincarnation story very soon. Won't that be interesting? NVM, it probably won't based on this mess of a book.

We all know that I'm trash fo BDB and The Shadows is the only BDB book I've actually cried while reading. I was so excited we were getting a Christmas romance for Trez and, after some hints about his HEA in the previous books, I wanted to see him finally happy.
I was definitely interested to see how Trez's romance was going to go with Therese, especially since she looked exactly like Selena. I was hoping it wouldn't be cliche and predictable, but unfortunately, it was. The conflicts between them were exactly what I thought they would be and there really wasn't anything going for this book. While it was over 400 pages long, I can't even tell you important plot points that even happened. We really only followed Trez feeling guilty for liking Therese and...that's it. And I'm not a fan of life-or-death situations solving a couple's problems and being the reason couples end up together, which is what happened at the end of this book.
While I was happy to see Trez happy, it wasn't as satisfying as I wanted it to be. I did love seeing some of the other brothers, but this was pretty boring to me because we didn't have the conflict that has been continuing through the main BDB books. This let me visit my favorite characters in my favorite world, but it was pretty lackluster in the end.

Nothing like Christmas love! ❤️

I have to admit I started and stopped this book several times. It’s not the fact that it wasn’t a good story. But it’s because I don’t normally read paranormal tropes unless it’s one by JR Ward. But it still takes me a little bit to get into the storyline.
This one proved to be a little more difficult because it is definitely one that you want to have read the prior book. I believe these two characters were first introduced in book number 13 of the series.
For me it was a little disconcerting trying to figure everything out but the author is fabulous in time in some of the backstory so I was not completely lost. By the first quarter of the book, I was definitely in the groove!
Besides how can I resist a book like this? A book of everlasting love that transcends reality, or what we know of reality. And that’s what the story is all about.
Intense, highly emotional and deep with feeling, it’s hard not to get emotionally attached to the story. Not to mention it’s extremely sensual and sexual to the very depths of your soul.
You feel the connection between these two. Ward writes in such a way that it feels like you’re in the room with them. Feels like you know them. I guess in a way we really do.
I love Where Winter Finds You. As a reader, we are put through so much along with many tense situations, but through it all have faith that everything will work out eventually.

4 Trez Gets His HEA Stars!!
Once again JRW has enthralled me, I love the Shadows and I’m beyond happy that Trez finally gets his HEA although he had to go through some hard times, soul searching, and come to terms with his feelings for Therese. As for Therese, i really like her, but I was a bit put off by her attitude towards her family, I understand anger and hurt but I felt it was overly dramatic and a bit childish. That said, we’re introduced to her family and I’m hoping we’ll see more of her brother in future books.
For those of you who aren’t fans of her multiple storylines you’ll be glad that this book doesn’t have them, naturally i’Am is included and once again worried for his twin and there is a smallish storyline involving i’Am and his Queen that I think everyone will enjoy.
Lastly, we get more of everyone’s favorite angel Lassiter. He’s such a great character who will once again have you smiling from ear to ear.

Makes no sense. I love BDB and the shadows but Selena was dead for a very short time before Trez dated Therese. So the whole reincarnation thing makes no sense because while Trez was with Selena Therese was already an adult. WTF J.R. Reincarnation is not the Wardens strong suit. I tried to enjoy the book but the whole reincarnation while someone is already old is weird and pissed me off. Either have the story 20 years in the future so the reincarnation makes sense or have Therese be a doppelganger and Trez fall in love again like Thor did. I'm triggered!

I liked the first three quarters of the story, and was thrilled that Tres got his happy after what JRW put him (and me!) through but, and it's a big BUT .... that last quarter and the whole reincarnation thing? Yeah, that was ... I have no words. 🙄

Love this happy ending!
I cried so much when Trez lost Selena, his shellan in book 13. I was devastated.
This novella, Where Winter Finds You was just perfect. It was Trez's turn for his HEA. Thankfully, this story delivers in a huge way.
Therese is working as a waitress for Trez's brother's iAm restaurant. She moved to Caldwell from Michigan after finding out she was adopted. This is the first time she has been alone and she is trying hard to keep afloat with her expenses. She lives in a bad part of town and she is saving what she can from her tips to move out.

Because she was Selena. And Therese. At the same time.
I'm a little stuck on the rating for this one. I want to give it 3 stars cause the ending was sweet but overall I wasn't feeling it. This reincarnation story arc didn't work as a novella. Trez is not even a year into mourning Selena and she already comes back as someone else? Too much. Way too soon. I don't understand why Ward didn't just hold off in reuniting them if she changed her mind about Selena dying. At least freaking wait a little. I was curious how she was going to tackle it in such a short amount of time and while it was explained in here and she even explained it herself a while back....I still don't get it. I know the same "loop hole" was used for JM since he's Darius. But there was more wiggle room there since he was a pre-trans orphan with no family and it flowed better since we got to actually see him transition and create ties on the canvas in real time. Here, Therese is already a full adult vampire with decades worth of memories of her own life and own family when we meet her. So Lassiter just snatched up Selena's spirit from the funeral a few months ago and planted her as a newborn baby on a family's doorstep and boom that's it? How does that work? The timeline doesn't make sense to me. Are we manipulating time? Unless I'm mistaken, that's not how reincarnation works. What Ward was trying to sell here just didn't work. Especially considering the fact that Again with John Matthew that rule works and makes sense, here it didn't. And a good chunk of that is because of the short time frame this all happened in. And like someone in the comments pointed out, what's gonna happen whenever someone from the BDB household sees Therese? They gonna get one of those gnarly headaches cause their memories were scrambled? Or is that just a convenient detail used only on humans? Considering JM's seizures I doubt it. Ward is getting seriously sloppy here, she's forgetting her own rules. The lines are all blurring. 😐

This 👆. Pretty much Ward's writing template now in a nutshell. I would be more forgiving over this farfetched arc if you didn't have h/hr falling in love in 2 days. Much less a grieving hero who is crippled by his loss yet you're telling me it only took him 2 days to magically fall in love with *someone else* who just happens to be his shellan reincarnated? Uh huh. And Therese can't explain it but she just "feels" like she's known him in an another life and yeah it's crazy but sheloveshimsoHEA! Yuh...No. Ward bit off more than she can chew here. To put your characters and readers through such a heavy serving that was The Shadows then turn around and pretty much undo it all so quickly and like this? So cheap. Yeah The Shadows sucked cause of the no HEA but at least it was emotionally gut wrenching, gripping and real. She may as well have left it alone if this was all she could come up with as a last minute "redoing". This would have suited a full length novel better but considering how everyone and their guardian angel are falling in love in 2 days times span these days in every BDB book I guess it would not have made any difference. And ain't that depressing. 😕

With that, she learned how to be her own person away from her family. I liked how she didn't jump on the help Trez offered from the beginning. She was looking to carve her own way in life regardless of the circumstances that left her in.
I was losing hope by the last few chapters but I'm SO happy that things worked themselves out with some help from a sassy character *wink, wink*! I'm excited about the future installments in this series and its spin-offs!

Ok, so brace yourself because this is going to be a long review!
I have mixed feelings about this one. I could feel some major loopholes in the story. Those loopholes are going to equally reflect in the BDB world too. I'm a die-hard BDB fan. Every new release fills me with anticipation for something new and exciting. But I was left anti-climaxed at this one. This feels like Anu Malik trying to be A.R.Rehman. Few questions:
1) Couldn't Therese had her own identity?
2) Why does this book look like a forced attempt to give Trez his HEA?
3) Why did Lassiter have to tell everyone the secret of Selena/ Therese at the end?
4) Why couldn't the same be done for John?
5) Why aren't Wellsie and her son being given some re-incarnation story?
6) Is it necessary to re-incarnate every character whom you've killed in the first instance?
7) Couldn't some other plot be given to Trez for his HEA?
8) Why kill the characters in the beginning when you are going to re-incarnate them all the same?
It breaks my heart to write this 'cold-bucket' review. I'm truly disheartened. Not recommended. This is shabby and a disoriented ending for one of my favourite character. I hope the same is not being done to others. What really irks me is that Therese is not just the re-incarnation, but she equally has Selena's face too? How much sticking sweet do you want the story to be? These words are endlessly repeated in the entire book "re-incarnated" "love" "loss".
And don't get me talking on the glaring punctuation, grammatical errors and silly typos reflected in so many areas. Seriously, is this some sort of joke? I have never given such kind of review for any book and something as divine as BDB getting it is a serious crash and burn offence. But I can't help it. That starting just made me roll my eyes because it was not needed.
In the end, my only question is...WHY?

Therese is still a stand in for Selene - even if I am meant to think they are one soul.
Overall I am glad Trez has a HEA - just not how it came about.

Eh, so I wasn't excited about this book. It seems like the story was backpedaled to appease the fans and I hate that. Plus there is that whole implausible explanation and well, I had a hard time deciding to read it or not.
But then The Sinner came out and I just had to read that one. I really enjoyed it and wanted more of that world so here I am.
And I wasn't that disappointed. Trez is a likable enough guy but I really liked Therese even if she seemed a bit too easily manipulated.
The drama at the end was too over the top...from her family to what happened at her apartment. There were too many details of what was going on and it all got a bit muddled.
I enjoyed reading about some of the BDB characters and especially getting to see some of Lassiter's handiwork...even if it was far-fetched. And who doesn't love a HEA? It was definitely a nice wrap up.

3 1/2 "I just don't know." Stars!
Well... Trez and Selena/Therese take 2! I guess I'm still a little bitter about the need for this book, but let me stop talking about that after all these years... I guess that's why this book was written.
So, J.R. Ward is definitely a talented writer. She had me enthralled from the start. Overall, I am so happy Trez is in a better place and that he finally has his Shellan. He again had to go through the emotional wringer. But I reall do love Trez. Therese was a good character. She certainly didn't have the demeanor of a Chosen and quite frankly I didn't like her that much. I just didn't care for her attitude toward her family. I felt like it was selfish and ungrateful. I understand anger and hurt, but... I don't know. I shouldn't judge her. But I did.
So the Big Reveal. I kinda felt like it was overly dramatic, but maybe not. The hows and all that... I can't explain without spoilers so I'll leave it with my last thought as I closed the book. "Ok, so that's how Ward wanted to try to fix her mess... I guess I buy it." - My exact thought at the end.

This is not a typical Ward's book. I've found it not having depth and complex storyline as any others. Where Winter Finds You features Trez and Therese as Ward introduced them in her last books. Trez is getting his second chance with his beloved one (finally), and do you know what happened? Yeah, he almost f*cked it all up.

I had such high hopes for this one because I LOVE Trez and his story broke my heart in The Shadows. I was so looking forward to seeing how he would get his second chance at love, and while I did enjoy being back in the BDB world, the romance just wasn’t enough for me here. The story definitely focused more on Trez’s grief more than anything else. The ending also wrapped up a little too quickly and easily for my taste. Still, I’m beyond happy Trez finally got his HEA!

It was a feel good story that though good, I could have missed. For this series and the spin-off, this is the first time I felt the story was all romance and no other plot to speak of.
For me, I enjoy my romance spicy with other things such as UF, Fantasy, Suspense, Thriller, Mystery, Paranormal, Dystopian, etc.
However, this story was all romance. There were little to no paranormal aspects. In fact, this could be contemporary with very little effort by removing the vampire aspects and slight story changes. And that was the disappointing part. Where was the action and danger we usually get in this series?
Still, JRW can out write most. So it was better than some other stories with all of those elements.
Anyway, disappointing. Narration was excellent as always. I give 3.5 stars.

Where did winter find me? It found me unhappy with this book. It made me wonder ......why did she bother? It made me bored, for one thing, I picked this up and put it down twenty times over the last month. Now I’m angry again over Trez losing Selena and this reincarnation is just BS. It would have been far better to just have written him a new woman. That is all.

Yeah.. I wasn't crazy about this one. Honestly, Ward should have left this one alone. I got why she went the route she did with Trez in "Shadows" though it was heartbreaking and the glue that held the explanations of Selena's illness were flimsy at best, still I got it. It felt way more organic to me than this TOO SOON reunion/second chance for Trez. I would have felt better if Therese was just someone he fell for with no other link to him whatsoever. *shrugs*
Now, I did love that I got a story where the book was totally just about the MC's, something I haven't gotten in sooo long with the original BDB, it still felt like I was being Told how I should feel about these two, and not really being allowed to see it unfold for myself. If that makes sense?
Trez and Theresa spent way too much time in their own heads for me. Even when they were together. Just not enough dialogue or opportunity for things to just flow with them IMO. Was a let down. Not to mention not enough hotness here for me either. UGH!!! Trez is my baby. Why I couldn't enjoy him the way I had hoped, kills me.
The explanation as to why Trez and Therese crossed paths to begin with, was a decent explanation. I liked that. It was more solid than the explanation of why he was so heartbroken in the first place that's for sure.
Conclusion:
This felt like a filler book to me. More like a 445 page Novella that did not need to be this long. Also it felt like a half apology by Ward for those who were just so ticked about the "Shadows" book. I think Ward should have waited longer when she had more inspiration to work with, if she wanted to give Trez a second chance. Cause this just was not it.. Weird too, because when I met Therese in the "The Thief" I think it was, I was actually rooting for a good story between them...
In any case, I'm only giving this 3 stars because of Trez and iAm, a few cameos of my faves, the Epilogue, and that 1st time locked corridor encounter ;)
