With Kingdom of Bones, I am halfway through the super underhyped series: The Echoes Saga.

“That’s exactly why they cheer his name. He doesn’t have a dragon or supernatural advantages. He inspired them because he showed them that they could be brave too. In a moment of clarity, Inara could see the true purpose of her order like never before. Dragorn aren’t supposed to inspire; how could we when we’re considered to be something else entirely? We’re here to protect and advise, nothing more. The people need inspirations they can relate to, even attain themselves.”

I finished reading Kingdom of Bones two weeks ago, at the end of August. And it’s only now that I could finally sit and write this review. Yes, this review took me two weeks to do. Why? Because my brain could not seem to feel confident with its decision on a rating. Here is the thing. I mentioned in my August Wrap-Up video that I think The Fall of Neverdark was better than Kingdom of Bones. However, just two days after posting my wrap-up video, I must say that I'm not so sure anymore regarding that assessment. It was hard for me to decide on a proper rating for this book, and I will elaborate upon this soon, but for now, I will give it a similar rating to the The Fall of Neverdark, a 4 stars rating.

“Man is the only creature who refuses to be what he is. Dragons listen to their nature and live accordingly. Orcs are the same, elves too. Man is stubborn. We can have ambitions beyond our capacity and equally lack the ambition to fulfil our capacity. We are prone to violence as easily as we are prone to love.”

First, I'll begin this review by discussing the two elements that didn't work for me. Kingdom of Bones is the fifth book in The Echoes Saga series by Philip C. Quaintrell. And it is also the middle book in the second out of three trilogies of the nine-books series. We, fantasy readers, know already how the second book of a trilogy often is plagued with the infamous middle book syndrome. And despite how amazing Kingdom of Bones is, it is not completely devoid of this issue. This will be completely subjective, but I found some of the POV chapters in the first half of Kingdom of Bones to feel like they're fillers or too long for their own good before we get to the amazing parts. And secondly, I can't believe I'm saying this, but Doran's chapters before he converged with the other main characters in the second half of Kingdom of Bones were detrimental to the overall quality of the narrative. For the majority of the book, other than his last few chapters here, I totally didn't feel like his chapters brought anything fruitful other than being comic relief.

“Every kingdom is built on the bones of those who came before. This is the way of things.”

These issues are why I had difficulty with settling on my rating because I certainly struggled through those parts. But at the same time, fortunately, I'm happy to say that these issues were worth persevering. Quaintrell has mentioned that he started to feel confident about his writing starting from Kingdom of Bones, and I can definitely see why. Excluding the increase in quality of his prose, what he achieved with Alijah's POV chapters in Kingdom of Bones is something new for the series. Quaintrell dived deep into the breaking and the building of Alijah's character in Alijah's Lessons, and I think the Eight Lessons Alijah learned in Kingdom of Bones were some of the best chapters in the entire series so far.

“Here is today’s lesson; heroes die. The world doesn’t need people to stand up for it and die in the process. They would be called heroic, selfless, yes. Martyrs to the cause of peace… But Verda needs more than a dead hero to recall in hard times. It needs someone who doesn’t die, someone who will stand firm against the darkness and maintain peace at all costs.”

It is frankly surprising. Alijah was a new character that appeared for the first time in The Fall of Neverdark, and I did not actually LOVE the new characters over the returning characters from the first trilogy. But now, not only for Alijah but also for Vighon and Inara as well, I feel like the new characters are starting to stand on par in their presence with the returning characters. I loved it. Handling the balance of spotlights between the new and returning characters in The Echoes Saga is another thing that Quaintrell executed nicely.

“Today you’re going to learn that love gives you the strength to transform pain into power. Where others could only draw this from a chosen few that they love unconditionally, you will harness that strength and power from everyone around you. Your love for your people will give you the means to accomplish anything.”

I have always loved reading Quaintrell's action scenes, and if you're like me, I don't think you'll be disappointed with what you get here. The last 30% of Kingdom of Bones were the best action sequence in The Echoes Saga so far. It gets more incredible and epic with humans, elves, dragons, dragorns, orcs, and undead clashing with their steel and magic for supremacy. I read the final 30% of the novel in one sitting. I couldn't put it down. And if this is a sign of the kind of action scenes we will get in future installments, I am stoked to find out how much more epic and intense the series will become.

“Those who carry swords… often believe you can only get the measure of a person if you fight them. They’re wrong. Only with words can you really dig into someone’s soul. The truth of a person must be teased out.”

Lastly, before I end this review, I am amazed by Quaintrell's world-building. Not in the scale and originality of the world-building itself, but more in how much that goes into it considering that the author (if I'm not mistaken) is a pantser type of writer. The storyline and the revelations unshed in Kingdom of Bones felt as if Quaintrell has planned every part of his world-building since the beginning. The truth of the dragorn's origin in Empire of Dirt was surprising already. And now we have the truth behind the Echoes of Fate.

“A wise man never knows all. Only a fool claims to know everything.”

Now you know why I struggled with my rating and writing my review for this novel. And you know what, upon further retrospection, despite some issues I had, I believe Kingdom of Bones is indeed one of the best of the series so far. I look forward to reading the next book, Age of the King, which will conclude the second trilogy of The Echoes Saga. Once again, I am surprised by how underhyped this series is.

“When I was a child… my father used to say, beware the man who brags about who he is. A lion never has to tell me it’s a lion.”

This was a solid middle book - definitely very dark at times, but also some really interesting lore additions and excellent character progression.

I still have some issues with Quaintrell's writing style, but that's a nitpick. This is a great epic fantasy.

A Must Read

First let me say this Philip Quaintrell has gone above and beyond in Kingdom of Bones. This novel with such great detail has what it takes to pull you in for the begging, meddle an the end. Philip is a genius in the telling. With each battle their with hope. The journey takes through Illian to the Dwarves kingdom with Doran an the Galfreys. Into Namdhor for the fight of their lives. While Alijah is in the hands of The Crow with Asher an Malliath. He has to endure the pain an abuse from all The Crow commands. You feel Alijahs pain deep in your soul.

The spider web of truth an lies puts you on the edge of your set as you journey with each an every character for good or bad they stick together. Who will be there in the end? Will Asher save the day? Will they all work together to end the hell an the future The Crow has thrust on them? Will Alijah come back to those he loves?

This fantasy series is the best I have read so far this year. Philip Quaintrell is a fantasy author in the making, an I for one can't wait to see how far he goes after this series. BRAVO SIR. outstanding work.

Every time I leave a new review for another Philip Quaintrell book I’ve strolled through, I get end up saying the same damn thing. AGAIN, this series has managed to blow my mind and be even better than the one before. It’s not often when you’re able to find a series that legitimately gets better every book. Especially with a 9 book series, there’s always a couple books in the middle that feel like a slog. With this series, that is not the case. His writing and storytelling is beautiful. I don’t think I’ve ever been this captivated by a story in my life. The last time I felt anything similar was with Red Rising or illborn. Awesome story. Immediately on to book 6!

This plot mainly focuses on the constant battle between the Orcs and other races in their relentless slaughter of the kingdoms. Standing in their way are our heroes which takes each of them on many an unexpected and dangerous journeys.
I love the way in which the characters both old and new are blended within the books also that they continue to develop their unique individual personalities as time passes within themselves and with each other. In this story there is a constant vein of truth and lies to figure out which has you on the edge of your seat and unfortunately so much torture and pain for one of the characters. And for another torture of a different kind.
The world building is always fantastic, beautiful and imagination inspiring and makes you feel like your right there. Weather flying around with dragons, exploring caves with Dwarves and Elves or traversing vast landscapes with characters good or bad.
To sum up this book packed full of adventure, danger, beautiful fighting techniques, magic, an epic final edge of your seat battle and different races. This author just keeps on giving. His books are a joy to read whether you start at the beginning or jump in at a later book. Total excellence.

The pacing was a bit off, seeming to drag at times, even during large battles. The stakes are just so high and the amount of devestation so great that it was difficult for me to want to keep reading. I very much enjoyed the glimpses of the dwarves, though...Doran and his Warhog Pig are my VIPs for this book. I do have hope for the conclusion of this trilogy, though...certainly some interesting implications for reveals at the end of this book should come to fruition in the next!

Exceptional

OMG. Quaintrell is a phenomenal writer. I can not overstate it. He wrote a book bringing out a great hero and then killed him off. But Asher was too good to stay dead so he brought him back. In the world of magic and fantasy anything is possible. And in this book our hero is brought back under the control of the villain. A villain who doesn't ser himself as a villain but knows he has to do bad things to achieve his goal. The overall story is what makes this book so much better than other books with this much action. But the side stories are just as compelling. I can believe the author when he says some things he doesn't know until he writes them but it all fits together so well. I loved this book and can't wait to read the next one. Quaintrell is my new favorite author. If you like a good story or a lot of action or fantasy books then please read this and all of Quaintrell's books. I promise that you will not be disappointed.

The Echoes Saga 05 Kingdom of Bones by Philip C. Quaintrell

Plot or character-driven? A mix
Strong character development? Yes
Loveable characters? Yes
Diverse cast of characters? Yes
Flaws of characters are a main focus? Yes

4.25 Stars

I fell in love with the character of Asher, and it has been difficult for me...as a fan of his...for a bit, but I see the light at the end of the tunnel, just hoping it's not a train (if you understand what I mean).

For me, all the other characters are peripheral. I'm enjoying their stories and their advetures and struggles, but the main person I care about...is Asher. I don't know why that is, but it IS.

I feel for Alijah Galfrey....and what he has been going through. Ugh.

The parts of the story that deal with the dwarves, especially Doran Heavybelly (love that surname. I might be a distant relative, just saying).

Have loved the growth of Gideon Thorn, and the impact that he's having.

Even Galanör Reveeri...has granered some interesting sequences.

...and on, and on. There ARE a lot of characters we've been introduced to, but even in this low period of the story...I've wanted more from Asher (in a good way), and I'm hanging on a thread.

The Epilogue was encouraging, but the Notes from the author was even more encouraging.

Writing long form storytelling cannot be easy. You need impactful moments for the characters, especially what has happened to Asher...and the missing him, is part of the power within the story. I get that, but man do I miss him.

Thank you for exploring this world (and buidling it out, and the magic, and the interesting personalities/characters) and sharing it with us in this series.

Thank you. I will be picking up the next book, soon. Talk to you, later.

Once again, this book delivered! The middle of the series and I was just as consumed as I was at the beginning. I don’t think there will be any slow down in this series.

This book brought in a bunch of new characters and man oh man did it all just work so well. It took me a while to read this because of Covid and stomach bugs and all the other sickness out there a person could catch, I caught them all. One thing, I always thought about this book. I couldn’t wait to get back to reading what was going to happen next and boy oh boy did a lot happen in this book.

Again, this needs a tv series. It’s that good.

amazing book

This is going to be one of my favorite series! After getting acquainted with some next generation characters in the previous book, all their stories are knitted together here.
We still have other beloved heroes with more Doran thrown in. I loved each chapter and different person’s POV. The last 150 pages were just breathtaking and unputdownable.
So many unanswered questions you are left with at the end of this story. I will dive into book 6 soon.

One of the best books I have read this year so far, if not 'the' best. I was unsure after reading the first trilogy if the second would be as good without Asher, it was. However, bringing him back was a stroke of genius and look forward to the next book, and indeed the next trilogy.

Two books in, and Quintrell’s writing just keeps getting better. His prose flows effortlessly, his pacing has tightened, and the final battle in this book is absolutely stunning. It’s big, brutal, and beautifully written, the kind of scene that sticks with you long after you finish. The characters are still strong and distinct, and the emotional beats hit hard.

But the core issue from before hasn’t just lingered—it’s gotten worse. The villain isn’t just powerful, he’s truly omnipotent. He can see the future, and right now that means total victory. Every move the heroes make, every small win, feels meaningless because he’s already accounted for it. If they fight and win, it’s because he wanted them to. If they lose, it’s because he planned it that way. Nothing they do seems to matter, and that robs the story of so much tension.

I love dark, grim stories where the heroes suffer real losses. I love villains who feel dangerous and intelligent. But when the bad guy literally knows everything that’s going to happen, it’s hard to feel any suspense or hope. The ending should have felt triumphant or devastating, but instead it just feels empty, like watching a game you already know the outcome of.

It’s frustrating, because everything else about this book is so good. The craft, the action, the emotion—it’s all top-notch. I just need some sign that the heroes have a chance, that the future isn’t already written. Otherwise, it’s hard not to feel like this incredible story is just spinning its wheel

I do not write reviews that often. I read others reviews and loathe the reviews that feel they have to give a complete recap of the story plot. Meh... to each their own. However, after reading the Echoes of Fate, the first two books of the Echoes of the Lost and the Terran Cycle (If you have not read these, read them!) I felt I needed to say something. (But who am I but an avid reader!) :)

Philip's series all take you on a ride that places you, the reader, within the story. He provides you with multiple characters to fall in love with and despise while developing their story lines both present and back. I always feel like I can picture the surroundings a character may be immersed within right along with the emotions they are experiencing.

Thank you Philip for the hours of enjoyment! I look forward to the final book within this series, Age of King(s) I believe along with the ensuing trilogy.

Another stunning tale

I am beginning to really consider that the ‘Echoes....’ will be one of the fantasy books of this decade (maybe a few other decades too). I was completely lost in this, would much rather have read than... most things and then, suddenly the story was over and it felt a bit like struggling to wake up.

If you are reading this and haven’t read the Echoes of Fate - stop and go do that, if you’ve already read it then you have almost certainly read Echoes of the Lost book 1 - it just gets better!

And finally, to Mr Quaintrel - I promise you it certainly didn’t read like a slog :-)

A few thoughts on whether to read the Echoes saga: https://www.solseit.com/blog-2/why-re...
And I have also reviewed this wonderful second installment in this self contained trilogy! https://www.solseit.com/blog-2-2/king...

My favorite book of the series just yet. A very clever foe, truly manipulating a lot of people and trying to get his vision to become reality. Beloved characters fighting against all types of odds. And what I like the most is that there is a fascinating and clever bow to diversity in thought that will resolve in superior results. I just loved the twist and the clever use of diversity of thought!

So this book suffered from major “middle book syndrome” - it’s the middle book of the middle trilogy of a series, it never stood a chance.
I felt very burned out through the first half of this book after having barreled through the first four of the series. I put it down and entered quite the reading slump. After picking it back up determined to end the slump and pick up some loose reading ends I fell back in love with this series and this world.
It definitely has its issues but this series and these characters are just so dang entertaining. The star rating is a bit inflated considering it took me nearly 6 months to get through it, but hey, it’s my system and I can rig it how I please.

Fantastic

I have read the previous saga and now this second book in this saga and as usual I didn't want to stop reading and wanted to go right into the next book. I liked how the story continued and read more of the dwarf Doran, Vighon's father and the hated Orc's. The collective stories of all blended well and made for a fantastic story. Can't wait for the next book. Keep them coming.

I absolutely love these books!

I have just finished reading this book and loved every second of it! When I read the first three books of the first saga, I was left with so much emotion for these fictional characters that I struggle to have in real life for people ( I’m really not an emotional person). I just connected with the characters from the very start. I love how the author describes the dragons I just imagine these lovely beautiful colourful dragons.

I would honestly recommend these books to any one that loves fantasy books. My only downside is once I finished them I tried to read a couple of other fantasy books and I couldn’t get into them the same. If they don’t have Asher, galanor or colourful dragons now I seem to get bored lol.

This book was quite a bit better than book 4. Alijah was not nearly so annoying, mostly cause he was getting tortured the whole time. we got to see more dwarves and most important... my boi Asher is back and isn't trying to murder the heroes! So that is great and I can't wait for book 6.

The only reason that I didn't give it 5 stars is the I don't get the Crow. What is his angle? And while he is much better at being a villain than Vilanis, I think that Karakulak is a better villain than the Crow. But I suspect that Alijah will soon become the main BBEG. But we shall see. On to book 6!!

This trilogy is what you’re missing in your library

The moment I started reading this book I began dreading when it would come to an end. This was the same with the Echos trilogy. I get lost in the storylines of each character and my imagination finds me still thinking about them (both awake and asleep) after I’ve forced myself to put the book down. Pacing myself to stretch the time I had with this book was a mixture of excitement and pain.
To anyone looking for a good story to disappear and get lost in, look no further.

Kingdom of Bones is the excellent fifth entry in the Echoes Saga, and continues to develop the story whilst being my favourite entry into the series (so far).

Kingdom of Bones follows a cast both newer and from the original trilogy as they fight the machinations of The Crow, a new villain very different to the first trilogy. Though not as physically intimidating as the first trilogy’s villains, The Crow is still a very cool villain. As is Karakulak (I hope I’m spelling that right).

Quaintrell has definitely improved as a writer throughout the series. It’s evident in this. He has a very excellent ability to make me care about every POV character, and he can write awesome battle and fight scenes. Great stuff.

Best newcomer to the Genre

Having read the first five of his books in this series, I am overwhelmed by the strength of the story line and richness of the characters. I have been reading books for more years than I want to remember but Philip is up there with Feist, Sanderson and the rest of my list of top authors. Please keep going as you have one avid fan here who can't wait for the next one. Well done.

Awesome story

I was hooked at the Return of the Ranger. After the initial trilogy I was excited to see the next two books out. Can't wait for the next!

The further in depth into Doran Heavybelly and all dwarves clans as well as how their society functioned helped understand them and was fascinating. Thank you for bringing back Asher. After following his adventures for 3 books it was hard to see him die. Now he is back!! Vighon is great character to bring into story. Watching events and walkthrough his eyes was awesome!

Can't wait for the next book!!!

Outstanding Second Book

From the mind bending horrors of torture to the aimless devotion of the enthralled, Kingdom of Bones does not disappoint. This is the perfect summer read for older tweens, teens, and adults. This story is sword play and magic...monsters and dragons...theives, gangs, and greed. For the die hard fantasy reader - dig in. I look forward to Book 3.
